"I'm sorry again that you had to walk me home," Kagome said, glancing behind a shoulder to the orange-haired teen. "I didn't think I would get so lost in this neighborhood. And then it started raining…"

She had moved from the shrine almost a year ago, after the Bone Eater's Well closed for the final time. Mama had known she had needed space. She had lost everything and everyone, including Inuyasha. Staying at the shrine would have been like a self-imposed prison, the memories haunting and depressing.

The orange-haired teen – Tsukasa Kazuki, if she remembered correctly – attended the same high school she'd enrolled in. While she hadn't paid much attention to gossip or felt the need to get close to anyone, she'd seen him around campus a few times. He'd seemed cold and reserved.

But after helping her with her current dilemma, Kagome's view was beginning to change.

Kazuki shook his head. "It's not a problem. I don't live far from here, myself," he said. He nodded towards the umbrella he was holding. "Besides, you didn't bring an umbrella with you. You could end up getting sick, Higurashi."

Surprised, she turned to him completely. "You know my name?"

"Class roster," he easily explained. His eyes connected with hers. "Tsukasa Kazuki."

"It's nice to meet you, Kazuki. I appreciate all the help you've given me."

"You don't have to keep thanking me," he dismissively said. "I didn't want to mention this before, but there's been sightings of a suspicious individual in the area." It wasn't a big deal. He would've done the same thing for any classmate in her situation.

At least, that's what he told himself. It was hard to gauge when an act of kindness could turn his whole world upside down. Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened to land him in his current position.

But she seems different, he thought. From the corner of his eye, he observed Kagome Higurashi. He'd seen her around school. Makoto had mentioned her name once or twice. She was a member of the archery team. Smart. Quiet.

And she didn't look at him the way other girls did.

"A suspicious individual?" Kagome muttered under her breath. She didn't appear frightened, he noticed. A small smile graced her features. "I guess I owe you one, then."

Before he could refuse, they reached the apartment building she was staying in. For a moment, she fiddled with the hem of her skirt, looking lost and a little uncomfortable.

"Hey, Kazuki," she said, "why don't you come in? Since you had to share your umbrella with me, you got wet. The least I can do is let you dry off and wait until the rain stops."

"Are you sure your family won't mind?"

Kagome bit her bottom lip. "Don't tell anyone, but I actually live alone."

Blinking in surprise, all Kazuki could say was, "Oh, I see." He was in the same situation. And even if he wasn't, he wouldn't have judged. There were all kinds of reasons why teens lived on their own. But he couldn't help wondering what her reasons were.

Her apartment was roughly the same size as his. It was neat and organized, filled with trinkets here and there that revealed her personality. There were pictures on the wall, most likely her family and friends. Kazuki stared, thinking about the blank walls of his own apartment. He hadn't wanted any reminders of his life back then, especially when his so-called friends had believed those vicious lies and his own father had blamed him for their misfortune.

Kagome's voice caught his attention, breaking him away from his darkening thoughts.

"Make yourself comfortable. I'll be right back with a towel for you."

"I appreciate it," Kazuki called back.

Wandering into the small living room, he switched on the television. Although he was grateful to be out of the rain, it would also be beneficial to check the weather report.

Kagome came back, towel draped over her wet raven-colored tresses, with another towel for her guest. He accepted it with a nod, the two turning their attention onto the weatherman. The more they listened, the deeper their frowns became.

"From the sounds of it, it might be better if you stayed the night," Kagome commented. She flinched, watching as a large branch flew across the screen. "I hope that doesn't end up crashing through someone's window."

"Or into a person," Kazuki added, wincing. "Thanks for letting me stay."

She lightly chuckled. "I have a spare pillow and some blankets. I'll grab them while you dry off."

He sighed. "Thank you, Higurashi."

"You don't have to keep thanking me," she said, repeating his earlier words. "And call me Kagome. Considering the situation, I don't think we need to be so formal."

"Agreed. Call me Tsukasa."

"Okay… Tsukasa." With a faint blush dusting her cheeks, she left to grab the promised bedding. She completely missed the answering blush that colored Kazuki's cheeks. He covered up the embarrassing reaction with the towel, drying his face from the rainwater.

A few minutes later, Kagome returned and set down the bedding. She glanced outside then checked the time. She smiled at the orange-haired teen. "How about I start dinner? I can't promise anything fancy, though."

Kazuki smiled back gratefully. "Yeah, sounds good. I'll help you."

The kitchen was small but fit two people perfectly. Kagome opened the fridge. The two peered inside, and the raven-haired teen winced. "I haven't been to the market recently. With just me here…" she explained, apologetic.

He shook his head. "Don't worry about it. There's more than enough here for the both of us," he reassured.

"Well, the good thing is that I have eggs and rice. There's also vegetables and leftover meat. We could make Omurice," she suggested.

"Sounds good to me. I'll get the fried rice started, if you'll handle the omelette?"

"Sure."

The two started getting their ingredients together. They worked quietly, moving around the other like they had been doing so for a long time. Kazuki glanced at Kagome from the corner of his eye.

She was pretty, he mentally admitted. Even before he moved and started living alone, he hadn't noticed girls. He'd been more interested in school and doing his own thing with his friends. But Kagome… she was definitely different. Not once did she try to gain his attention, didn't flirt with him. She treated him like any other person. Something about her mere presence soothed him.

She made him feel as though he could be himself again.

As he continued to observe her, Kazuki couldn't help the cringe that marked his face. "You add sugar to your omelette?"

Kagome gave him a teasing look. "Of course, I do. Trust me. My omelette always comes out light and fluffy, too."

Kazuki released a long-suffering sigh. "You're so weird."
