Chapter 10: Start of Kindergarten
Hi again!
This is Nyssa here, newly 3 years old and currently being brought to the hell called kindergarten.
Yeah, for me it's been a year since I brought you an update. Sorry for the time skip, but nothing really happened in the past other than a few play-dates with Rachel (safely in her house, with no mythological monsters, Greek or otherwise, interrupting.)
Oh yeah! Aunt Ruby's pregnant again! And it's probably Sadie! Or rather, please let it be Sadie, the world will be in shambles without her.
"What are you thinking so hard about, Nyssa?" Dad asked as he drove closer towards the place I wanted to avoid at all costs. No, seriously. Toddlers are little devils that can raise hell and then give an innocent smile afterwards like they did nothing wrong. I fully respect any kindergarten teachers that deal with tens of those at once. Even one is a nightmare.
(And no, that one time babysitting my little cousin in my past life did not go well. It ended with a messy kitchen, a sprained ankle, a puddle of tears in the living room and candy wrappers strewn everywhere. You. Do. Not. Want. To see. That.)
"The baby!" I didn't let the silence stretch out too long and giggled while answering. "Is it a boy or a girl?"
"We'll know when it's born," Dad said, amused. "But remember, whether it's a boy or a girl, love it unconditionally."
"What is un-can-dee-shun-ally?" I asked, pretending to be a kid. Hey, I have to act like it sometimes, right? If I didn't, other people might get suspicious. It's hard to walk the tightrope of a particularly mature child and an adult. Sometimes I almost slip. But this time I didn't. I even pronounced the word slower, as if I was tasting it.
"Ah, it means 'no matter what'." Dad paused before chuckling. "I guess I forgot you're still a kid."
The car moved onto a paved driveway before I had a chance to respond. Whatever I was going to say, what came out of my mouth was an excited, "We're here!"
Dad helped me get out of the car (Hey, I'm still too short to get off by myself, go figure,), and we were greeted by a nice lady with a clipboard. "Hello, welcome to Eden Kindergarten. Are you new?"
Oh, right right right! I forgot to say, but this kindergarten is privately owned, so it has it's own tiny uniform! I'll leave it up to your imagination, but the dominant color is green. It was brand new, so I guess that's how the lady could tell I was newly admitted.
"Yes, I'm Nyssa!" I waved excitedly. The lady chuckled.
"Hi Nyssa, I'm Jennifer! Feel free to call me Miss Jenny! I'm usually at the desk in there," she pointed to a front and center table in the lobby where a receptionist was sitting, "But I was so excited to meet you that I came all the way out here!"
"Really?" Of course not. She probably didn't even know I existed before today. She seems good with kids though.
"Really!" she smiled again before looking to Dad. "May I have her name and class?"
"Nyssa Amos Kane, Lower KG Section A!" I answered again.
See, this school/kindergarten/whatever has a special organization system. The kids are sorted into different sections depending on their scores on the entrance exam, which shows them how much work needs to be put into each student.
So, there are 4 sections: A, B, C and D. The D section the place where kids who barely passed the entrance exam or with special disorders they can't handle (like dyslexia, or ADHD), so specialized teachers need to be stationed here. The C section is of average students. Nothing really special. The B section, students are pretty above average.
And then there's Section A, the 'advanced' section. Kids in this section pretty much know the curriculum for this year, so it mostly focuses on the next year's classes, (in my case Upper KG), and extracurricular activities like drawing, singing, dancing or some such.
So I'm basically in the top section of the toddlers. For some reason I'm feeling bitter.
"Oh, it seems like you're smart too!" Miss Jenny crouched down to meet my eyes. "Getting to Section A is definitely an achievement. High-five!" we high-fived. For some reason her eyes widened.
Miss Jenny composed herself and got back up again and started walking. "Follow me, your homeroom teacher is... oh, Miss Solace? You're in for a treat then, she's an absolutely amazing musician and artist. She used to be in a band, or so everyone says, but after her son was born she turned to teaching. The son is in your class, actually. I hope you become friends!"
...Wait, where have I heard the name Solace before?
We stopped in front of a pretty nice-looking classroom. Kids were milling about inside (while crying) with a beautiful blonde woman going around the room and talking to (and soothing) them. I spotted Rachel's red hair in the corner.
That was the only reason I was going here, actually. It was because Rachel was going there (and we could afford it, thank you Magician of the House of Life stipend!), which we (Dad) found out from Mister Jean. Turns out Rachel and I are the same age, so we'll be entering kindergarten, school, and general life together (hopefully).
"Oh, Rachel's already here? I can see you're raring to go," Dad commented happily, watching me vibrate in place, waiting for him to let go of my hand.
"Go on then, I'll pick you up in a few hours," he released my hand and I immediately went to the door, barely catching his lonely mutter. "So this is why parents dread letting their kids go, huh?"
That made me pause. I turned around and gave him a little wave, before almost entering the classroom.
I noticed Miss Jenny going down the corridor.
...Hold up, was she floating?
I squinted in her direction before shaking my head and deciding I didn't see anything. I quickly entered the classroom before anything else could make me doubt my eyes.
So... wow. This was a really late update. And by that I mean really late. Sorry about that. I was occupied with another story that JBlaser suggested (if you watch Miraculous Ladybug you should definitely check it out, it isn't complete yet but I'm planning to finish it soon, unlike this story). It was planned to be a one-shot, but ended up too long so I had to split it up into separate chapters. Then I got a PM asking when I would update this story (I'm so glad people like it enough to ask!), and then I decided, I'm updating Nyssa Kane, then I'll finish the three-shot. So I did.
Please review and let me know what you think!
