A couple more days passed and before Jason knew it, it had been a week since his transformation into a dinosaur and his integration into the Raptor squad. By now, he was pretty well adjusted to his predicament, and also bonded with the others although the one he appeared closest to was Blue. He couldn't explain it, but being around her made him feel happy. He enjoyed spending as much time with her and she seemed to share the sentiment. they'd share their meals with each other, and Blue would ask about human things that only he could explain.
It was possible that he could be falling in love with her, right? Maybe it was just his instincts as a dinosaur pushing towards that because he's male and she's female.
But right now was not the time to worry about that.
A pig squealed loudly as it ran through the trees and bushes of a jungle. The reason it was running was because behind it was the Raptor pack was right behind him with the Beta leading.
"I got it!" Delta called and snapped at the pig but missed by an inch, nearly sending the Velociraptor colliding with Echo.
"Watch it!" Echo snarled at her sister.
"Knock it off, you two." Jason barked at them sharply. "Focus!"
"Pig's getting away!" Blue shouted and the raptors increased speed, running into the clearing where the catwalk was located.
"Hold!" Owen called from above, bringing the raptors to a halt as the pig ran back into it's den and the door closed which earned a frustrated snarl from Echo. Owen's voice brought their attention back to him as he clicked a clicker. "Hey! Okay, eyes on me!"
Jason had become involved in the training routine after Blue practically ordered him to do so. He had been reluctant at first, feeling his presence in the training would mess up their routine but Blue said it would be fine and to her credit, she was right. So now Jason took part in these little training exercises.
"Blue!" Owen called, seeing the Beta was still looking for the pig. "Blue!"
At his sharp tone, Blue looked up with a snarl.
Owen pointed at her and sternly said. "Watch it."
"Don't fucking yell at her!" Charlie growled, stepping forward.
"Charlie-hey!" Owen barked sharply. "Don't give me that shit!" He saw Delta moving. "Delta! Lock it up! Good... and we're moving." He said, walking along the catwalk. The pack turned, keeping their heads to their alpha and keeping the form they were in. A few snaps and growls from one when they bumped into one of her sisters.
"Move it!" Delta snapped at Echo.
"Watch those teeth!" Echo snapped right back.
"Hold!" Owen said, stopping at a bucket hanging on the rail of the catwalk as they all stopped and watched him. "Okay, that's good. That is damn good." He said clicking his clicker, letting them know they did good before reaching into his bucket and pulling out some chunks of meat.
"See Charlie? That's what you get!" he said throwing a chunk of meat to her who quickly ate it. "Echo! There you go. Delta!"
Eyeing the Beta and 'Shadow', Owen picked up two more chunks of meat and held it out to get their attention.
"Blue? Shadow?" Said raptors looked up intently. "These ones are for you."
He tossed them down and the raptors gobbled them in seconds. Jason licked his chops and nudged Blue. "I ate mine's faster." He boasted.
"Oh shut up." Blue chuckled fondly while nudging him right back.
"Get a room, lovebirds." Delta said with an amused snort, causing the two to blush. Oh yeah, Delta was sure something was going on between Jason and Blue and she took the opportunity to tease them about it all the time.
"Hold!" Owen got their attention once again. "Eyes up!" He he;d his hand out, keeping their attention and then brought it down. "Go!"
With that, the raptors took off under and past the catwalk, free to do their own things.
Cheers erupted from the staff as that was the first time that they all responded to their combined and solo commands and no serious fight broke out between them.
Barry came up smiling and laughing like they had just won the lottery.
"You finally did it, man." Barry said as another voice rang out causing all celebrations to grind to a halt.
"Owen!" Hoskins yelled walking up patting some staff who all gave him dirty looks. "I was starting to think I hired the wrong guys but damn, you got them eating outta your palm."
"You came on a good day, it's not usually a happy ending" Owen said with a neutral face.
"Is that why you're not sending in your reports?" He asked shaking his hand.
"We've been busy" Barry said defending his friend. They had not given up on searching for Jason, who was still missing. Owen hadn't even wanted to inform Jason's mother about it. He knew Jason was alive and not dinosaur food, so he wasn't giving up. Something had happened to him, and Owen wasn't going to rest until he found out.
"Not too busy to cash your paychecks." he said fake punching Barry who didn't flinch and wasn't amused.
"What do you need, buddy?" Owen said trying to keep his calm.
"Another field test." Hoskins said as Owen rolled his eyes and turned around trying to walk away but Hoskins followed. "Hey we've seen it can be done. We used it to catch Shadow. It's been a week now. Another test is needed."
"That was a one-off, Hoskins. These are wild animals, you don't want them in the field." Owen said seriously.
"I just saw a bond, a real bond between man and beast." Hoskins said getting in front of Owen.
"You're in my way." Owen said simply.
"Come on, we're the same. We're dogs of war. We know that the military needs to reduce casualties. Some people think robots are the future." He said as Owen just walked around him. However Hoskins wasn't giving up and kept following him. "Look nature gave us the most efficient killing machine 75 million years ago and now we know they can take orders."
Barry walked up to them. "We finally make progress and that's the first thing he says? Make a weapon?"
"Come on gents, it's grown up time. Drones can't searched tunnels and caves. And they're hackable. The minute a real war breaks out, all that fancy tech is gonna go dark" Hoskins said.
"But that tech ain't gonna eat them if they forget to feed it" Owen said as they came to a spot that over looked a clearing where most of the girls were hanging out.
"Look at these creatures. They've got millions of years of instinct in their cells, instincts we can program. They've got loyalty that cannot be bought" Hoskins said admiring the animals.
"These guys are gonna run straight into the enemies teeth and eat them, belt buckle and all" Hoskins said.
"And what if they decided they wanna be in control?" Barry asked.
"Then we remind them who is. We terminate the rogues, promote only loyal bloodlines." Hoskins said.
Barry's response to that was just to laugh and walk away.
"What? What's so funny?" Hoskins said.
Owen shook his head at him. "You don't come here and learn anything about these animals except for what you want to learn. You made them and now you think you own them."
"We do own them. Extinct animals have no rights." Hoskins reminded him.
"They're not extinct anymore, Hoskins." Owen said walking away.
"Exactly, we're sitting on a gold mine and Masrani is using it to stock a petting zoo." He said, following Owen who accepted a bucket from another worker.
"He just wants to teach some people some humility. He doesn't want to make weapons." Owen countered as the two walked down a set of stairs. At that Hoskins laughed.
"You think that the 8th richest man in the world is only into oil, telecom and family fun parks? He's so diversified he doesn't know what he owns." Hoskins said, inciting an eyeroll from the Raptor handler.
"How long has InGen been practising this pitch?" Owen asked.
"Since we hired you outta the Navy." Hoskins said as the stepped off the stairs and onto ground level. "These animals can replace thousands of boots on the ground. How many lives would that save?"
Owen then opened a gate that led into an open part with another gate that led into the raptor pen. He immediately closed the door and hit a button, locking it so Hoskins couldn't get inside.
"War is a part of nature. Look around Owen, every living thing in this jungle is trying to murder the other. You think Bravo just woke up with those scars one morning. Mother nature's way of testing her creations, refining the pecking order. War is struggle, struggle breeds greatness." He said as Owen began to approach him. "Without that... we'd end up with places like this, charging seven bucks a soda."
"Do you hear yourself when you talk?" Owen asked. Hoskins only smiled.
"This is gonna happen with or without you boys. Progress always wins, man" he said. Owen just got closer to the bars, his smirk never leaving his face.
"Maybe progress should lose this time. Also, I would love to see you try and control them without us." He said. Suddenly they heard a loud crash followed by a pig squealing.
"Pig loose! Pig loose!" A worker yelled as both men turned and looked inside the pen. A worker ran onto the catwalk holding a noose-pole.
He stopped where there was no brush and put the pole into the pen as the pig ran towards him. The pig ran right into the noose and the worker was about to pull it up and out of the enclosure.
Until Echo snatched the pig and pulled the worker off the catwalk and into the enclosure.
He hit the ground with a loud thud as Blue and her sisters, minus Echo, immediately took notice of the intruder in their territory.
Owen ran forwards to the second gate and watched as Blue, Charlie and Delta stalked forwards, screeching at the man who tried to pull himself back using his hands. Owen didn't need to think twice and hit a button beside the second gate as it began to rise.
"Owen no!" Barry yelled coming up next to Hoskins. Owen didn't hesitate and once the gate rose enough, he crawled underneath it.
"No, no hold your fire!" Owen shouted rushing forwards into the pen and seeing a pair of guards aim their guns at the Raptors from up on the catwalk. They quickly looked at him like he was crazy.
"Hold your fire, do not fire!" He said getting in between the worker and the animals. They screeched at him as he held his hands up.
"Put twelve amps in these animals, they'll never trust me again." He said. As he was talking to the animals, Barry had come into the middle of the two gates and was standing by the close button for the second gate.
"Blue, stand down. Stand down." Owen said, staring down the female beta. She snapped at him.
"Hey, hey! What did I just say?" He said before hearing a screech to his left.
"Delta, I see you. Back up." He ordered seeing the raptor trying to sneak around him.
"Good, good. Charlie, stay right there." he said now looking to his right.
Unknown to him, Hoskins was smiling through the bars. He saw that they weren't advancing any more.
"Okay. Good." Owen said slowly, looking at each of them. He noticed the four girls were here, which means Shadow wasn't. Where was he? That put Owen on guard, knowing raptors were experts at ambush tactics.
Seeing the worker was close, Barry grabbed him and pulled him under the gate and out of the paddock.
"Owen!" Barry called, seeing the raptors were slowly beginning to box Owen in.
There was a snarl that didn't come from any of the girls and, to everyone's shock, Shadow was suddenly between Owen and the girls, growling at them warningly. He was protecting Owen.
"What are you doing?" Jason demanded, looking at each of them. His heart had jumped into his throat when seeing Owen was in the paddock, surrounded by the girls. While he didn't know if they would harm him, given Owen imprinted on them from birth, he didn't want to doubt the instincts of a wild animal.
"An intruder was in our territory." Charlie said, snarling towards said intruder who was cowering beside Barry.
"And you decided to surround my uncle like you want to rip him apart?" Jason retorted, looking at each of them before looking at Blue. "If you want to kill him... you go through me."
Blue stared at him with a neutral expression for a few moments, then her eyes softened. "We weren't going to kill him, Jason." She walked up to the male and gave him a small nuzzle. "We... we actually thought he was down here to play. It has been a while since he played a game with us. He stopped coming in as we grew bigger. We probably just got a little excited at having him back in the paddock again."
"I hope so." Jason said softly, blushing at Blue's nuzzle but he couldn't help but return it with briefly licking Blue's snout which made her snort and shake her head with a chuckle.
Jason looked at his uncle and jerked his head towards the small opening in the gate, silently telling him to get going now. Owen slowly moved and when he was close enough, he ducked down and rolled underneath, allowing Barry to hit the button that closed the gate.
Barry then helped Owen up saying something in French.
"Yeah" Owen said agreeing before he shifted his focus to the worker.
"You're the new guy right? Leon?" He questioned.
"Yeah" the worker said outta breath, still on the ground.
"You ever wonder why there was a job opening?" he asked next as the man paled and let out a shuttering breath. "Hey, don't ever turn your back to the cage."
Owen looked into the paddock, seeing Shadow was watching. He stared at the raptor who stared right back. There was something about the way he stared at Owen that confused the handler. He protected him from the girls, and now looked at him like he knew him.
Owen shook his head before turning to see Hoskins still at the front gate, watching with a smirk on his face before he walked away.
And that's it for this chapter. Yes, we are in the Jurassic World movie plot.
