Ch. 5

~ Rodenius continent ~

Louria had organized a two pronged attack.

One by sea and the other by land as they would be striking at the same time.

The land forces will attack Gim while their sea forces will attack Mihark forcing Qua-Toyne to defend on two fronts. Based on their own intelligence, they only had enough numbers to commit to defend one of these attacks. If they tried to defend both they would get overrun. Thus regardless of which they decide to defend against, Qua-Toyne was losing one of it's city's.

Based on the most logical approach, they would most likely focus their defense on Mihark as their strategist expected that they should easily take Gim without much resistance.

However they did have a new concern in relation to this Dominion that had recently shown up. Their information on them was rather sparse. But they seemed to posses formidable power with their iron dragon, metal golem, and lightning magic wands. However such magic should not be so easy to use as noted by their own mages as such power should be rather rare. As reported by their diplomats in meeting them, there was nothing to be concerned about with how lacking their presence was.

So taking into account of their potential military power, they did not expect much change in their initial conclusions. Granted they expected to suffer quite a bit of loss. But in comparison to their gains, it was inconsequential.

As long as Parpaldia was supporting them, they didn't have anything to worry about.

~ Rodenius continent ~

Sharkun was the vice admiral of the Eastern subjugation fleet.

He was in command of four thousand four hundred vessels as they sailed to victory.

Based off reevaluations, they had nothing to fear. In fact, his fleet was supplemented with more wyvern riders to compensate for the outcome they were expecting.

Thus Sharkun beamed with pride as he did this in honor of his kingdom and countrymen. Standing on deck, he breathed in the sea air. He was expecting if not a little giddy as he wanted Qua-Toyne to challenge his mighty fleet as he ran through every possible scenario imagining nothing short of an absolute win.

Yet as they continued to sail, they had not encountered any resistance. Normally such an occurrence would be eerie as it would spawn speculations. Yet it only incited chatter feeding their bravado as Qua-Toyne's forces fled upon seeing the obvious outcome.

However such thoughts would soon leave their minds.

The Dominion has been aware of Louria's movement up till now as reported by their ghost agents but also by cloaked ravens that has been directly observing their movements and quietly tailing their forces.

There were many ways the general staff and strategic department thought of in dealing with them. But the most important part was understanding the mentality of their opponent. It wasn't enough to just beat them back as that would only galvanize them to try again later. They had to go beyond that. They had to make them understand that there was no glory or honor in war. Just death and horror for those who choose it.

Thus there was not going to be any warning shots or pulling their punches. Anyone who presented themselves as the enemy will be shot at. But they were not ruthless animals. Hence if it was possible, they will show mercy and restraint if the option presented itself.

However till then, Louria's naval fleet had entered the point of no return.

"What is that?!" one of the watchmen shouted.

Alerted, Sharkun among many others on deck looked out as they couldn't comprehend what they were seeing. Words were just getting jumbled as they couldn't piece it together. But if there was one thing they could describe it as, it was a flying fortress.

More specifically the Dominion had sent a starport. It served two purposes being theatricality and a rearming station. A lot of military Terran structures were designed to be versatile. Most of them were capable of being mobile in order to relocate bases or create new outposts on the fly. But a starport could even serve as an operable space station as it was outfitted to service and construct vessels along with quarters for a crew to live onboard.

After the last forty years of improvements, it could now function as a carrier if needed. Though this starport didn't have it's own armaments and only a temporary F.T.L. engine, it served it's purpose well. With the green light given banshees, vikings, and assault drones were launched from the hanger.

With weapons hot, banshees started the attack firing their payload of rockets. Though downgraded versions of their usual load out, they were still highly effective against primitive slow moving wooden ships as one shot per a ship was more then enough to sink them.

As for the assault drones, operators controlled them from the starport as each manned drone was accompanied by a squad of adjutant controlled drones that would support them as their wing man. For assault drones, they were highly flexible with what kind of weapons they could be equipped with. For this sortie, they were armed with 30 mm guass autocannons as bullets were cheaper and easier to replenish. Within one pass, several rounds were able to pierce right through the deck exiting through the hull of the ship not caring what they had to pass through to do it much to the terror of those onboard.

However a starport can only support so many personnel as ships would need to fly back to rearm. There were over four thousand enemy ships. Thus the Dominion pilots were not the only ones out there.

Unseen by Louria was what was going on underwater.

Living on the coast of Idunn were the mer-people. Though they could walk on land, their physiology would not naturally allow them to live far from water. Being incorporated into a space faring civilization, their options were limited in what they could do. But they found plenty of work in aquaculture or deep sea mining on quite a few worlds within Dominion territory. Although rare, some mer-people did join the military as they had to wear specialized moisture suits.

Swimming undetected to Louria's forces, the mariners planted explosives along the hulls of their ships.

Once the air forces started their attack, that's when the mariners triggered their bombs taking out quite a few ships as crewmen had to quickly jump out of their sinking vessel or risk it becoming their underwater coffin.

With location trackers active, Dominion forces avoided any type of friendly fire while they also pinged their targets to avoid wasting time or ordinance on marked enemy's.

As this was happening, Sharkun was still dumbstruck as he still couldn't process the fantastical things in front of him. A flying fortress, iron dragons, unknown magic, and something unseen underwater was attacking them. There was so much his mind couldn't process at once as not just his eyes but reports were hitting him from all over the fleet relaying their own situation.

"Help! Help! Help!"

"Where is our air support?!"

"What's attacking us?!"

With the attack on the fleet and not waiting for orders from those in command, aerial support was called in as a wyvern airbase immediately ran into action. Squires helped equip the riders as their mounts were prepared on the airfield to be flown out.

As they were prepared for sortie, command couldn't understand the confusing information they were getting as it sounded like the people on the other end had gone insane with what they were saying. But it didn't change what needed to happen as several squadrons of wyvern riders took flight to engage the enemy in support of their naval fleet.

Flying to their location, the riders had found themselves just as perplexed as magical tools they've never seen before was not only fighting their fleet but sinking their ships at a frightening rate. However they didn't have much time to ponder as their presence didn't go unnoticed.

The Dominion had studied their enemy well. Banshee pilots and drones had cleared the line of fire as vikings took their position. Armed with anti-air missiles, they were different to their usual composition. Explosives would have been a waste with trying to take out an enemy like this. Thus they were using sentinel class missiles to maximize damage. Based on their organic nature and toughness of their armor and scales, the shrapnel will easily tear through anything within fifty meters of detonation. If it didn't kill them then they were going to be badly hurt.

Once the first volley was fired, the wyvern squadron tried to take evasive maneuvers. However they couldn't escape the heat seeking weapons. Upon detonation, more than half the squadron was eliminated sending Louria's air force into a frenzy.

Watching this battle which felt like it was lasting an eternity, Sharkun couldn't come up with any solid ideas on how to fight this. These iron dragons not only used lightning magic but something he could only describe as light arrows as they relentlessly chased and slaughtered their wyvern riders.

How were they supposed to defend let alone fight back against these monsters?!

~ Rodenius continent ~

Louria's land forces were mobilized as they crossed the border.

The first siege of Gim may have ended in failure, but expectations were high as they should easily roll right through it.

Though their numbers were substantially less then the naval forces, they still had a sizable infantry accompanied by cavalry as well as wyvern riders to support them in the sky totaling their numbers in the thousands.

But for those in command, they couldn't shake off their bad premonition.

However it wasn't just some random feeling but an actual effect of their magic which allowed them to gain a quasi sixth sense that something bad was about to happen. Acting on that feeling, they ordered their reconnaissance to search the area for the enemy to only come up empty. But if they couldn't find anything, why did every bit of their instinct tell them to run away?

Yet it was far too late for that.

Tanks were parked some distance away. Once enemy forces were within range, they entered siege mode as it's 90 mm twin barrel transformed into an 180 mm shock wave cannon artillery. It's anchor legs locking into place to withstand the backlash of it's firepower. Coordinated by ravens updating targeting systems, all tanks opened fire.

"What in the world is that?"

"What is that whistling sound?"

"Hey, do you see that?"

These were the few things Louria's forces were able to utter before explosive shells tore through their ranks as soon screams of terror and thundering blasts filled the air. Commanders screamed as loud as they could to issue orders. However there was too much turmoil for anything to be heard or anyone to follow them.

Some were frozen in terror.

Others were desperately trying to escape the carnage.

A few were pointlessly praying.

Meanwhile the ravens continued to communicate and coordinate with tanks to maximize their damage.

"Do you see where the attack is coming from?!"

"What kind of magic weapons are these?!"

"How can they attack from such an impossible range?!"

The wyvern riders were also in disarray as they were trying to make sense of the situation. But with their ground army getting slaughtered and their commanders too busy trying to regain control they were on their own to figure things out. But it didn't take much to guess where the attack was coming from.

"All riders on me!" commanded the lead over their magi-comm. "We'll take out those filthy demi-humans ourselves!" as all riders flew towards where the attack was coming from as they followed the subtle puffs of smoke.

However this situation had been well planned out. The strategic department only wanted to use what was absolutely necessary when it concerned rationing their resources. They didn't want to pointlessly set up missile turrets. Nor did they want to send any ships which would not be cost effective in this battle without proper logistics. Instead, what was sent to support their siege tanks were a lot of widow mines as they were easy to produce, deploy, and maintain field control.

Burrowed between both forces were those robotic spiders. Automated robotic weapons have gone under many improvements, derivatives, and redesigns as they in turn created new standards over the years. Aside from better A.I., greater durability, improved sensors, and longer operation time, the biggest improvement were that widow mines didn't need to resurface to reposition. Taking inspiration from Zerg units, specifically roaches, widow mines could move underground as it was able to generate a low range vibration allowing it to move through the ground similar to a Zerg.

Although they have a relative idea where the wyvern riders would be coming from, some were outside their expected flight path. Thus the widow mines would quickly reposition as they would be catching them in their ambush without revealing themselves. Like the artillery fire from the siege tanks, the same idea applied as they wanted to maximize their damage.

Taking full count of how many riders there were, the widow mines waited for enough of them to enter their kill box range. Once enough of them were in, all of them fired their executioner class missiles simultaneously.

Caught in this ambush, it was a complete wipe out as the riders never saw it coming as their corpses rained across the empty plains.

~ Rodenius continent (ocean) ~

Sharkun spirit had been completely broken.

On one hand he was overwhelmed with anger. This was a mistake beyond incompetence as it wasn't a small matter of underestimating their enemy's strength. What they were fighting was beyond comprehension. How could their intelligence on this matter be so lacking? They were assured that the Dominion was no threat to them. Though he had heard stories about the kinds of weapons that were available in the second and first civilization zones. But this? These magic weapons were an impossibility as far as he was concerned. It had even crossed his mind if this Dominion was in truth the Ravernal empire that had returned to reclaim Elysia based on the legends that had been passed down.

But on the other hand was his heart breaking despair for two reasons. Leading the largest fleet in the third zone, he will forever be remembered as the foolish admiral that got his entire fleet destroyed. The other being how helpless they were as they were being one-sidedly slaughtered.

How were they even supposed to fight this?!

The iron dragons were too fast and powerful as they completely dominated their wyverns as if they were minor insects as their light arrows and lightning magic wiped out the entire squadron within minutes of their arrival.

If by some miracle that their pitiful arrows and magic could even harm their iron dragons which was outside their striking range, that would've been an easier task by comparison in trying to take down a flying iron fortress.

Even now his mind had stopped working as all he could do was stare at this impossible thing while screams and requests for orders were being yelled in the background.

But it was all far too late for any of that to matter as the Dominion sank every ship within view. However they only stopped once whatever number of ships were left turned around and fled.

It would have been a simple matter to pursue them and sink the rest. But as part of the general staff and strategic department, they were thinking long term. If they killed fleeing soldiers, it would speak poorly of the Dominion on the international stage of this planet. They didn't need to make more enemies or have hostile relationships. Depending on how things played out on the Rodenius continent, if they showed nothing but cruelty it would just spark more conflict.

Recalling all ships and drones, they performed a sensor sweep.

There were many Lourian survivors floating in the ocean. Without rescue, all of them were going to die as they were too far from land, there were no Lourian ships to pick them up, and also a strong possibility of ocean predators nearby looking for an easy meal.

Thus as a post battle clean up, medivacs were deployed as part of a humanitarian aid. Aside from goodwill, it would put them in a better position for negotiations after the war with Louria was over.

Mer-people helped with gathering and tagging making medivac rescue easier.

As planned ahead of time, a holding cell was prepared in Qua-Toyne where the P.O.W.'s will be kept.

With this matter being handled, the starport didn't need to be there as the mer-people and medivacs will return to Idunn once they finished drop off.

After considering their options, they were now going onto the counter offensive. For Louria can not claim any type of foul play now with their second invasion attempt.

Though the rules of war were different depending on the civilization, the Dominion will maintain it's basic code of conduct as they would stay away from the civilian population. But now they were going to decimate Louria's ability to wage war.

With everything prepped and ready to go, adjutants began it's high speed calculation right down to the decimal point. Once the math was checked and the navigational computer had locked it in, the starport made a tactical jump.

F.T.L. travel had made significant progress as they were smoother, less taxing on the passengers, and quite energy efficient. But more importantly they were highly precise.

A warp space window soon opened as the starport accelerated in. The trip itself was instantaneous as the Terran structure had soon found itself right on top of Louria's naval base where their ships were docked and constructed. But soon enough it was going to be reduced to rubble as starships would do to them what they had just recently did to their navy. Buildings were knocked down, wyvern run ways were cratered, and anything of military significance was destroyed.

Once their task was complete they would tactical jump to the next location to repeat the process.

As that mission was being carried out, siege tanks and widow mines were loaded onto transports as they had their own mission to complete.

~ Rodenius continent ~ (late afternoon)

Louria's communication was being overwhelmed with reports coming from all over the kingdom.

"Where is our reinforcements?! We need them now!"

"We've been attacked?! What the hell was that thing?!"

"We need more man power! We still don't know the full extent of the damage!"

The reported devastation and casualties were astronomical as never in the history of their kingdom had they sustained such horrific damage.

At first they thought it had to have been a mistake or a trick as what they were hearing was lunacy.

But once names, ranks, and identification came in to verify, it left a deep gut wrenching feeling in everyone who heard it.

Was this the doing of the Dominion?! How could a barbaric nation that had just shown up be this powerful?! More importantly how did they attack them?!

Did they have multiple of those iron fortresses or does it teleport?

They had too many questions, no real answers, and mostly a bunch of conjectures.

"New report coming in!"

"What now?!"

"Enemy sighted! They are right in the outskirts of the capital!"

"What?!"

This was the plan the Dominion had implemented as they would finish this war in one day. Siege tanks were parked along the outskirts as widow mines spaced out and burrowed. Louria's air support had been completely removed as well as most of their land forces. They didn't have much to send besides their royal knights and others who were not really worth mentioning.

The widow mines would prevent Louria's forces from advancing while their tanks would start pelting their capital.

Following their intent, they would not raze the capital turning it into a sea of fire and corpses. Instead they were just the distraction in a way. The armored units were broken up in to two groups with different ammunition types.

One group was armed with explosive tungsten shells while the other with normal solid shells. The first group would take out prime targets or any hostile groups while the other laid on the pressure drawing the attention of the defending forces to them.

Although on the surface this attack against Louria may have seemed like a hammer approach, in truth it was a scalpel. Regardless of how much damage the Dominion inflicted, it was very precise in terms of it's planning based on targets of interest and how much stockpile they would need to accomplish it.

With the prior week to work, they managed to meet their quota with some extra breathing room.

Frankly based on their intelligence, it was good that Louria could not use its full national power as it would mean more potential targets they would need to hit. Since their government was still based on the feudal system, many noble lords had their own armies separate from royalty. Regardless of their national policy of pro-human, a good chunk had decided for the most part to sit out the conflict. Whether it was for personal interest or ideological belief was up to debate. However it didn't matter at this point. Even if they tried to mobilize to defend their capital, everything would be over by then.

Lourians were terrified as they have never seen magic weapons like these before.

But sitting around and doing nothing was not an option either.

The royal knights had tried to assemble their forces to counter attack. Yet the enemies fearsome magic made their armors and shields useless. Quickly trying to come up with a new plan, they tried to use their cavalry to either draw their fire or miraculously make it to where the enemy was attacking them. But they too were slain as they never made it that far from the capital's walls as something in the ground attacked them.

Injured men were pulled back for medical aid.

Stationed soldiers tried to keep up morale as they pointlessly held their shields in defense.

For the truly terrified were curled into a ball sitting in the fetal position as the sounds of the enemies weapons caused them to lose all hope as their hands covered their ears with their eyes shut tightly.

Any available hands were on the magi-comms calling or demanding help. As they were trying to contact the other lords, one operator was making the most important call. A call that was to their contact from Parpaldia.

They were their last glimmer of hope as with their assistance they might be able to turn the table on the Dominion.

After finally getting into contact, "envoy of Parpaldia! Louria has sustained critical damage as the capital in under peril from the enemy's formidable magic weapons! We are requesting immediate aid!"

But in response, " . . . . The well being of Louria is no longer our concern. We had initially invested in your country to see favorable results that would benefit Parpaldia if you had managed to unite the Rodenius continent. But it would appear we will need to cut our losses as investing any further would be a sunken cost fallacy. You are now on your own" as they then hung up much to the shock and horror of the Lourian operator as they tried time and time again to get them back on the line.

With no other options, Louria steeled itself to make their last stand.

With the sun setting as night had taken over, the Dominion was now going to enact the last phase of their plan.

To be continued . . . .

Author's notes: Sorry for the late post as a lot was happening with life and stuff breaking down in which scorching weather was not helping. But anyways onto some commentary.

Next chapter will close out the war with Louria as the next chapter or so will close out the arc as the Dominion will now have to deal with Parpaldia.

It seemed the most logical approach with what Louria would have done if they failed to take Gim with a two pronged attack to divide Qua-Toyne's forces or force them to lose one of their territory's to save the other. But at the same time they fell for Diabo's trick as they severely underestimated the Dominion's capabilities as their hubris was ultimately what got them.

Now there were many options opened to the Dominion on how they could have attacked their fleet. But I had to balance game mechanics with the realism and lore of what they could do. So they would need a depot for reloading for the full scale attack that they were going to commit too. Hence the starport for ships and drones to resupply for going back on another attack run. Now scale wise, I'm not sure how big a starport is as I couldn't find any official numbers. But if I had to take a gander, I'd estimate around a quarter to half the size of a battlecruiser. Lore wise, a starport really can function as an operable space station. So it would make sense that it can do the things that I wrote above.

This was one of the additions I wrote as an upgrade to the widow mines. If any one has any upgrades or new unit ideas for Terran forces then drop a PM and we'll talk about it. Also will properly credit you for the idea. Just make sure the upgrade or new unit doesn't get too OP.

I have been asked why the Dominion hasn't gone out and explored the solar system. Simple answer is that they first need a base with a stable supply line. The last thing you want is something going wrong and someone being stranded out there.

With this arc closing out, I've been approached with a lot of interesting ideas. So hopefully what I'm cooking comes out good to which I'm most thankful for everyone's input so far.

If there any questions or concerns feel free to ask as I'll do my best to answer them.

So thank you for reading as I further extend my gratitude if you can review as well.
