Chapter 14: Dark Changes
Life is full of changes. Some nice, some not so much. Well, in Gil Parker's life he has more surprises and changes than usual. And not all of them are usually good. Our protagonist will find himself in a somewhat tense situation with the appearance of a new person in his life.
It all starts on a normal day at the Bubble Bugle offices which were under repair after the confrontation between Spider-Guppy and Scorpion. Everyone went about their daily work routines. Gil returned to the office of his boss delivering the photos of the hero of New Bubble York
"This has to be a joke. "Spider-Guppy robs the bank!" You're not talking seriously! He only stopped the real thieves, sir" Gil asked confusedly.
"That is what the masked man wants to make us all believe. He simply stole from the thieves what they stole. He just took advantage and no one says anything. Only we know the truth of things" Grumpfish explained his point of view.
"Mr. Jameson is right. We must not let ourselves be put off by first impressions" Someone entered the office. He was a young guppy boy with light brown hair, fair skin, with his fin brown with diagonal black stripes. He was wearing a white t-shirt with a black jacket and black pants. He looked older than Gil for a few years.
"And who are you, boy?" Jameson asked him.
"Oh! My manners. My name is Eddie Brock and I'm the new reporter. Today is my first day and I needed to meet with you, boss" He introduced himself.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Gil Parker, I'm a photographer" Gil greeted him kindly.
"Oh! So you're the one taking pictures of Spider-Guppy. Your name appears in the newspaper. I admire your work very much. Not bad for someone as young as you" Eddie commented.
"Thanks….I guess…" Gil answered nervously.
"One way or the other. Brock, you will be in charge of making the reports related to Spider-Guppy. I have seen that you have a good record and I trust that you will be able to expose that masked vandal as the true criminal that he is" Jameson said loudly.
"It will be so, sir. You can trust me" Eddie said quietly.
"You two can go. You have work to do" He ordered. Both boys decided to leave Jameson's office and took the elevator together to leave. It was at that moment that they both decided to talk a little more.
"I will impress Jameson with my performance. I'll be able to show him that Spider-Guppy is a criminal...or at least...It's the only thing we need to show for the boss to be satisfied" Eddie said.
"I don't agree with Grumpfish's view. I try to photograph the truth. The truth that Spider-Guppy only seeks to do good for everyone" Gil shared his opinion.
"Interesting point of view. I respect it. But this is what they pay us for. Just do what Jameson says and everything will be fine" The new employee said confidently.
"But you don't mind having to lie? I mean, we know everything Spider-Guppy has done for the city" Gil tried to defend the masked hero (I mean, himself)
"We only have to comply with what Jameson says... The rest is irrelevant... But hey, it is not expected that a simple photographer like you would understand" He smirked a bit.
"What do you mean?" Gil raised his eyebrow.
"I'm just saying let's get the job done. Simple as that. And if your photos are not useful for my reports... Well, I can take the photos myself. Jameson doesn't need a student working part-time when he can count on a full-time track record reporter like me" Eddie smirked at him.
"Please... I've been here longer than you... And I do my job well... I doubt Grumpfish will replace me" Gil defended himself.
"Hehe….No matter how old you are here, you will always be replaceable. Besides, I can do your job much better...Okay, see ya...Parker" He said that before getting out of the elevator and leaving. Gil looked at him with some annoyance.
"Mmm something tells me he's going to be trouble" Gil said it to himself.
The arrival of this new boy was not pleasant for Gil. He quickly gained the trust of Grumpfish Jameson with his reports showing Spider-Guppy as a threat. Aside from causing trouble for Gil Parker, he was also causing trouble for the masked hero. Eddie Brock didn't really care about seeking the truth from the city's masked protector, he only cared about his position within the Bubble Bugle. While Gil wanted to show with his photos that the wall-crawler was a hero. This caused a conflict of interest between Gil Parker and Eddie Brock. As if that weren't enough of a hassle in his work life, it would affect other areas of his life. For that we will see a normal day at New York Bubble High School.
"Wow, that reporter Eddie Brock has you on the ropes. Are you sure your job is not at risk?" Goby asked worriedly.
"I don't even want to talk about him. I know I should be nice to the new guy but...He's so arrogant and conceited...I don't like any of that" Gil rolled his eyes.
"I don't know about you, but that boy is very attractive" Deema said with a lovely tone of voice.
"Ugh…I definitely hate this guy" Goby crossed his arms.
"Well, I must confess that he is handsome...but he is not my type" Oona admitted. She looks a little better since we last saw her. They were outside the school when they ran into their friend.
"Hi guys! Nice to see you... Hey, I want to introduce you to someone special. Guys, this is Eddie Brock. Eddie, this is Goby, Gil, Deema and Oona..." Molly introduced him.
"It's such a pleasure to meet you...Although...Wow, Gil! I see you study here. What a coincidence. I didn't know you were friends with Molly Jane Watson" Eddie said surprisedly.
"Yeah….friends…" Gil and Molly said that without looking into each other's eyes. It was obviously an awkward situation.
"Moving on to something very important...How did you two meet?" Goby asked Molly and Eddie.
"Well, I met her when I started following her blog about Spider-Guppy. In my opinion as a professional reporter, she did a great job. Since then we have been seeing each other often to help her with her page and give her advice for her research" The new guy answered kindly.
"Yes, he has been helping me a lot...Like a good friend would..." Molly said that hint and unfortunately Gil understood that she was referring to him.
"So you two are friends, huh? Or something else?" Goby asked again. They both got nervous and blushed.
"We're just friends... though you know? I wouldn't refuse to have something more with a girl as cool as Molly" Eddie smiled a bit.
"Hehehe stop…." Molly giggled a bit. It is obvious that Gil was not very comfortable with the situation
"Anyway... I'm going to help Molly improve the interface of her website. Can I give you a ride?" Eddie showed her an extra motorcycle helmet.
"Wow! You have a motorcycle!" She was excited.
"Of course, Molly. Let's go" Eddie said before getting on his bike in a black biker jacket and Molly sat behind him and clung to him. Before leaving, he simply gave Gil a cocky, smug look before walking off.
"I'm starting to hate that guy" Gil crossed his arms.
"Woah….Looks like that guy has Molly under his spell. I'm sorry, man... but he's everything a girl looks for" Goby patted his back "But...what was all that? What happened between you and Molly?"His best friend asked curiously.
"Well...we discussed and well...we are giving ourselves time or something like that" Gil touched his own arm.
"Well you missed your chance! Now Molly is in the arms of such a handsome, smart and cool boy!" Deema said excitedly.
"I don't know, guys. I don't like that boy, it's obvious that he is older than her... He is already of legal age... That may be inappropriate" Oona commented nervously.
"Ugh! I hate that conceited man too!" Dash Thompson appeared in the scene.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Gil asked confusedly.
"That guy is conceited and arrogant" Dash said bothered.
"Look who's talking about" Goby rolled his eyes ironically.
"I admit that I am not the best person, but he is much worse! At least I do not hide that I am conceited. Instead he pretends to be someone good. I don't know! I don't like it at all" Dash Thompson explained.
"Weird... it's the first time we agree on something" Gil was surprised.
"Yeah…weird….Don't make this weirder" The football captain crossed his arms.
This was no longer pleasant for Gil Parker. Eddie Brock wasn't just taking his job, now he wanted to take the dream girl from him. The following days were difficult for him. It seemed that Molly and Eddie were getting closer while Gil felt that his relationship with her was growing apart again. However, Gil couldn't just focus on his personal problems. He had a second life that he couldn't neglect. Unfortunately, thanks to Eddie's reporting, Spider-Guppy's reputation had not improved. However, that would not stop the hero. He had his job to keep the city safe. Although now he had a more personal mission. Gil wanted to start investigating Oscorp. It seems that if he investigated the company, he could find answers to many of the questions and mysteries that he was hiding. For example, the origin of villains like Vulture, Rhino, Electro, Lizard and Doctor Octopus. Is it possible that Oscorp has something to do with it? Also, researching Oscorp could help our hero search for information that would help him create a cure for Connors and possibly Nonny as well.
On a quiet night, Spider-Guppy decided to carefully infiltrate Oscorp Tower, the company's headquarters. Obviously, he had to evade many security systems. Eventually he made it to one of Oscorp's main labs, though his real target was the headquarters. As he was walking through the lab he found something mysterious. There was a mysterious viscous black substance that moved by itself. That thing was moving all over the container. Spider-Guppy decided to read the description that he had written on a plate
"Name: Specimen SW-84
Origin: Unknown.
Description: Alien life form found in the last space excursion in the Oscorp space project recently. Its properties are still unknown and it is recommended not to release this specimen without authorization"
"I didn't know that Oscorp had a space exploration project. I bet even Goby doesn't know about this. Hmmmm I guess I shouldn't care about this. I have another mission" Spider-Guppy said to himself. While this was happening, he decided to look for the main office. But something was wrong. He saw how Norman Osborn's office was open. Spider-Guppy decided to sneak into the office and saw something strange. It was the silhouette of a young guppy in a black outfit with white details like white gloves and trim that looked like white fur. This person turned to see and revealed something curious. She was a girl! She was a young woman with brown skin. She wore a black mask that covered her eyes and wore a black hood that had cat ears that was part of her costume.
"Oh wow...what a surprise...Spider-Guppy is here...nice to finally meet you" The girl smiled at him. For some reason she smiled flirtatiously and that made him feel confused.
"Do I know you?" He asked curiously.
"Is this how you treat girls? Too bad...But it doesn't matter...You can call me: Black Cat..." She walked in circles around him.
"Oh not again. Don't tell me you're another mutant supervillain or one with stolen technology. And judging that you're at Oscorp, another crazy woman who has a grudge against Norman Osborn" Spider-Guppy said.
"Wow, that's a lot of questions. And I thought that cats were the only curious ones Hehehe" She giggled a bit "Look, I'm not a mutant catwoman...I don't have high tech either, just conventional stuff...And as for Norman, I have nothing against him...I only like shiny things" The woman in the black suit played with a jewel on her fingers.
"Wait...Do you want to rob Norman Osborn?!" Spider-Guppy asked seriously.
"Something like that. I don't think Norman Osborn is affected much. After all, he is rich. He has so much more than this. Can't I take a single insignificant jewel?" She played with him.
"You are a simple thief. I'll have to stop you like everyone else" Spider-Guppy prepared himself.
"Too bad...I thought we had something special...But hey...The night is young and a little fun wouldn't hurt" The girl she was preparing to attack. Or at least that was what Spider-Guppy believed. She just did a lot of somersaults and athletic maneuvers to kick him out of her way and started running away. She used her athletic ability to escape and used retractable tech claws to climb walls.
"Hey! Climbing walls is my thing!" Spider-Guppy started to chase her.
"Climbing walls ain't the only thing I do, darling" She said mockingly as the chase raged inside the Oscorp facility. Both were extremely agile and fast. They managed to bypass all the security systems while Spider-Guppy tried to stop the thief.
"Stop now, Black Cat!" He managed to get in front of her and tried to hit her, but she managed to grab his fist.
"Hit a girl? That's not very chivalrous, little spider" She said teasingly before she could push him onto a lab table. The impact broke some containers which caused Spider-Guppy to be in a bit of pain.
"Grrrr…Ughhh…." Spider-Guppy slowly got up until he noticed the security alarms start to go off loudly.
"It was fun, Spider-Guppy. I hope we see each other again. Until then...Meow!" Black Cat winked at him before leaving the building doing many stunts to get out of the crime scene.
"I do not think so" Our hero got up and tried to follow her around the city using his webs. What he didn't know is that a strange black stain stuck to the suit on impact. It seems that the mysterious substance that lived in the container in the lab had broken, and whatever that black squinty substance was stuck to the tail of the suit and began to grow and cover more of Gil's body.
Spider-Guppy traveled throughout the area until he lost sight of this new self-called thief: Black Cat. He simply decided to rest on top of a building and noticed something strange, his suit began to turn black. And the substance began to cover his entire body.
"Huh?! Wh-What?!" The boy began to try to remove that mysterious black living ink that was spreading throughout his body. When Spider-Guppy managed to recover, he decided to see himself in a reflection using the glass of a building.
"What is this?" Finally Spider-Guppy began to see the new version of himself. The new suit was all black with a large spider logo on its chest in white. Besides that the eyes of the suit were white. The change was not only aesthetic, there was something about it that was new as well "I feel...different...It feels...great" He was admiring the new outfit and decided to start moving around the city using his drastically improved agility.
Now he was faster. He swung safely through the city. At that moment he noticed that a crime was taking place. Some strong and dangerous-looking thieves were trying to loot a jewelry store, breaking in. Spider-Guppy didn't give it much thought and decided to stop the thieves. What he noticed is that the suit was very adjusted to what he wanted to do. His stealth ability has improved, as he managed to take down some of them before they noticed. When the thieves noticed his presence, the hero simply appeared in front of them.
"I think you have chosen the wrong night to steal" He said funnily.
"Oh sh*t! It's Spider Guppy!" One of the thieves said scaredly.
"Hey! That's not Spider-Guppy...He has a black and white suit. Spider-Guppy's is red and blue. He's nothing more than a cheap imitation. Finish him off!" The leader ordered. Some of them took out sticks and daggers to finish him off. Spider-Guppy began to fight strongly against them. In battle, he discovered something impressive: He was stronger and faster than he was before! He managed to move better on the battlefield. Something impressive is that one of them wanted to stab him and he shot a black spider web at him and his hand with the gun stuck to the wall and he got trapped.
"Wow! I'm not using my web shooter. This thing...creates its own substance! With this I won't run out of cobwebs anymore. I will stop depending on the chargers" Spider-Guppy said excitedly. One of them pulled out a gun and wanted to shoot him in the head from behind, but Spider-Guppy moved on his own to dodge the shot and kicked him hard in the face "Hey...I didn't do that...The suit can defend me on its own...It's like an enhanced spider-sense...Whatever this is...it's amazing"
In this way, the thieves had no chance against Spider-Guppy's black suit. The robbers were left injured and trapped in the black web, ready for the police to arrive and arrest them. The boy returned to his house feeling victorious. It was true, he couldn't capture the new thief Black Cat, but he had gotten something much better: The mysterious black suit. He thought of taking off the black suit like a normal person would, but the mysterious life form simply made the suit disappear and reveal his civilian appearance, as if the suit could appear and disappear on its own.
"This is incredible. That could save a lot of time. But... what the heck is this thing?" Gil decided to remove a small part of the suit and put it under his microscope to see this mysterious living substance in detail. He noticed that he could move on his own and not only that. He now found out the truth "Hey! This thing is Oscorp's alien substance...How did that get to me? Possibly in my duel with Black Cat. As cool as this thing is to have, I feel like I should return it to Oscorp" He told himself. He tried to brush the goo off his body. But it was impossible. Whatever that was, he didn't want to let go of Gil's body. Looks like that thing wanted to stay with the spider boy "I guess you don't want to go, huh? Well, I think you can stay in my body for a while. Then I'll see how you get back to Oscorp" Gil said to the substance that had attached itself to him. From that night, a strange bond began to be born there.
From that day on, Spider-Guppy news was trending again. They were all talking about the same topic: Spider-Guppy's new black suit. Many have different opinions. For some, it was just a cosmetic change. Some like the new suit, others miss the classic red and blue suit. But did the change of costume influence any change? For some people no, for others yes. However, we will focus on the Oscorp Tower where we can see Norman upset.
"GRRRRR I was robbed! I have identified that my jewelry has been stolen and in turn...Oscorp's alien life find has been stolen. And not only that...Spider-Guppy HAS that alien symbiote specimen! Does he dare to rob the great Norman Osborn?!" He yelled furiously.
"Please, Norman...Don't lose your head. It's exactly what we wanted" A mysterious voice began to sound. Norman panicked and turned to look at his desk. It was the Green Goblin mask. It seems that the mask spoke on its own.
"What the hell are you talking about? That thing is dangerous... especially in the hands of that wall-crawler" Norman asked confusedly.
"Precisely! How many times did you not want to experience the properties of the symbiote on a person. Finally, Spider-Guppy has become a test subject without his knowledge. What I am sure of is that we must be more discreet now. It is not wise to fight Spider-Guppy. It is possible that he will become stronger and more aggressive than before" Green Goblin's voice explained.
"Our enemy is getting stronger. We can't stay here doing nothing" Norman commented.
"We'll let the symbiote do its job. We'll see what happens with the spider. In the meantime, let's keep working in the shadows. After all, isn't that how the great Norman Osborn works?" The voice said it. Before the owner of Oscorp Industries could continue speaking, he heard footsteps and decided to hide the mask in a cabinet where only he had access. The person who wanted to see him was his own son, Goby Osborn.
"Dad, are you okay? I heard someone broke in last night...everything alright?" Goby asked worriedly.
"Oh...it was nothing important. It was just a foolish jewel thief. And whoever the thief was, he didn't take much. Anyway, what are you doing here?" Norman said seriously.
"I just wanted to know if you were alright...And also...I would like us to spend some time father and son...There are things I want to talk to you about...for example...tips to win over someone a girl..." He said nervously.
"Son, in case you haven't noticed, I'm busy. I don't have time for your teenage dramas. I have much bigger problems than yours...your problems can wait...we'll talk at dinner" Norman said loudly.
"(sigh) It's always about you, isn't it? The whole world revolves around the great Norman Osborn. Whatever... It doesn't matter... You have time for all your projects and you never have time for me. Thanks, dad...I'll manage on my own" Goby said that in annoyance before slamming the door shut. Normally, that rebellious gesture would annoy Norman. But he was focused on many other things. He was simply touching his forehead in frustration.
"If you only knew that I do all this for you, Goby….."
We are back to a normal day at New Bubble York High School. Gil was with some of his friends: Goby, Deema and Oona. They were talking about trivial topics until they touched on an important topic.
"Do any of you know anything about Molly?" Oona asked curiously.
"I hardly see her since she started seeing Eddie Brock. I think there is something more between them hehehe" Deema smiled a bit.
"And has anyone seen Zooli?" Goby asked.
"She texted me that she wasn't going to make it to school for a few days because she wasn't feeling well and was going to the hospital. I hope she's okay" Deema answered.
"I hope so. She is a good friend...not like other people" Gil crossed his arms. When they were about to ask about that comment, a couple appeared before them.
"Hi guys! Sorry I'm late, but Eddie took me somewhere for breakfast. It was very delicious. You guys should go with us some day" Molly said excitedly.
"Yes, they have the best breakfasts in the city" Eddie added sincerely.
"Yeah right, you two were "having breakfast". Hmmm sure you guys were savoring other things" Gil said with a hostile tone. Everyone was shocked upon hearing those words. And more coming from a quiet boy like him "(Wait! Did I say that out loud?!)"
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Molly was offended.
"Oh...I...Well...Ugh..." Gil started to get nervous. Those words came out of his head and he doesn't know why they came out of his mouth. As if something made him say them.
"Don't worry Molly. Ignore that, he must be exhausted. I can talk to him alone...I mean, we work together...surely we can work things out" Eddie proposed. Molly simply nodded her head upward. Eddie Brock simply walked over to Gil and took him somewhere more private.
"And now what do you want, Brock?" Gil crossed his arms.
"You just have to know that that sounded very offensive of you and you should apologize to her" The guy told him.
"I see that you are "too correct". Who are you kidding, Eddie?" Gil asked him.
"I think the only one in trouble here is you, Parker. I know what's going on: You're jealous. I bet you've spent your whole life trying to win over a girl as amazing as Molly Jane Watson. And all for a guy to take it off your hands. That boy is me. Well, I really appreciate you trying everything, but you should know the truth: She doesn't love you. At least not romantically. You'll always be that nerdy best friend of hers...Or at least, that's what it seems like...because I see something happened between you" Eddie Brock told him. All of that left Gil silent. He knew that everything he said was true. He simply clenched his fists of helplessness "I'll give you some advice, Parker. If you really appreciate Molly...the best thing is to let her be happy with me. If you keep meddling between us you will only make her unhappy...If you are a real man, you will understand and listen" Those words were cruel and might have some truth. Gil just looked away in silence. Eddie just smiled "I knew it...You're trash, Parker..." He just left him alone. Parker just fell silent. A large amount of negative feelings began to agitate him little by little.
"Did you just talk to him? What did he say?" Molly asked worriedly.
"He just apologized. He's fine. He just needs to take a breath. Hey Molly...Do you want us to prepare your next blog post about the new black Spider-Guppy suit?" Eddie said it to distract her. She just makes a forced smile.
"Sounds great" Molly followed him. Goby was the person who knew Gil more than anyone, so he knew something was wrong. He ran out to find his best friend. And the strange thing is that he went to the place where they both talked... And Gil was no longer there. Where did he go?
Gil had run away from school using his abilities. He decided to go home and lock himself in his room. Luckily, he was alone, although that was not good. He began to think that his life was really a misery. His uncle was dead. His aunt was hospitalized. His economic situation was very difficult. His job was in jeopardy because of Eddie. His friends were constantly disappointed by him. The love of his life was now in the hands of another "better" boy than him, Eddie. His mentor teacher and friend, gone and deranged as a lizard monster. His best friend, turned into a threat named Doctor Octopus. And his superhero life wasn't good either. The press was against him because of Jameson and Eddie. Criminals keep hurting people even though he's always trying to save the day. The Sinister Six are still on the loose, and they may be up to something. All these responsibilities were too much for a young boy like him. He, without saying anything else, broke down in solitude and began to cry. It was an emotional charge that he had accumulated for a long time. He hadn't felt well for a long time. His comedic personality in his hero mode was a release or an escape from a sad normal life.
"snif….snif….I miss you, Uncle Ben! I wish you were here...You would know what to do...You would know some advice...But you only said: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility...Well, I did not ask for this power... Why do I carry this responsibility?!" He shouted loudly. When he screamed, the black substance appeared again and began to slowly cover him again. There was not a pleasant silence for a long time "Don't worry, Gil...Things may get better...They will get better...I just have to trust myself...And I have to trust us" Gil said that with a strange tone. There have definitely been strange changes to him since that symbiotic substance attached to him. What things will happen from now on? Spider-Guppy and Gil Parker are going to change?
This is not good. Some already know this Spider-Man arc. It's honestly one of my favorite arcs. What will that symbiotic life form really be? Will it help Gil or will it hurt him? How will Gil's life change through this?

"HEY! COME BACK, THIEF!"
It was the cry of a man furious that someone had stolen money from him. The detail is that he was not a normal thief. She was the beautiful young thief, Black Cat. She used her conventional skills and artifacts to leave no trace and sneak through the city. It seems that it was her lucky day, because neither the police nor Spider-Guppy showed up. She just decided to go into an apartment that looked cheap and modest. She noticed that someone was waiting for her.
"Hehehe…I´m back, Jinx" Black Cat stroked the head and ears of a beautiful black kitten. The kitten just purred. The girl entered a room where someone was lying on her bed waiting for her.
"You're back, sister!" A little guppy boy greeted her. The little boy was of preschool age with dark skin with almond shaped eyes. His hair was short purple with curls and his fin was purple.
"Please, Mike...Don't make noise" Black Cat took off her hood and mask to reveal something surprising to us. Zooli Hardy was Black Cat! She sat next to her little brother's bed.
"And how was your day? Did you run into Spider-Guppy? Did you fight someone?" The little kid asked a lot.
"Whoa Whoa…One question at a time lol. I finally got money for two more months. And you know the best? I finally got money to buy you your birthday present. It will be in a couple of weeks, remember?" Zooli smiled at him.
"Yes Sister! What are you going to buy me?" He asked excitedly.
"(giggle) If I tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore, huh? Well, you'd better go to sleep... If mom finds out, we're in trouble" Zooli said quietly.
"Okay sis but…..Won't everything be easier if you tell her the truth?" Mike asked her. Zooli was quiet for some seconds.
"Rest well, Mike" Zooli said before she left his room. She decided to go back to her room quickly to get out of her thief outfit before her mom saw her. Just as she changed into her pajamas, the apartment door opened to see an adult female guppy resembling Zooli enter the house exhausted. Zooli saw her and decided to get out of her to receive her with a cup of coffee and cookies "Mom, you were late"
"I´m sorry, dear…..I had to work overtime...but I'm here now, right?" Zooli´s mom said tiredly.
"It doesn't seem fair! You always work more than normal hours for miserable wages! Your boss is a complete jerk!" Zooli said indignantly as she served her mom food.
"(sigh) That's what happens when you don't finish school, dear. That's why I want you to never leave school, okay" Her mom advised her. The girl nodded.
"Don't worry, mom... You know I'm not going to leave school... Even though it's tiring for me, considering that I work too...
