Here with the update. I think it is gonna work with weekly updates, as long as I stay with 3 to 4k chapters. Finished it a few days ago, made a few edits and have started on the next chapter already. So, if I'm caught up and ahead, I'll update a day early on Thursday instead of Friday.
Now, let's get to the chapter, shall we?
Hope you enjoy!
Her heart palpitated as puffs of hot breaths misted into the cool night air. Her hazel eyes fearfully flickered as she looked back at the men following her.
This day couldn't have been any worse for her.
She had lost yet another job. They felt she wasn't doing enough. She worked her tail off more than anyone else there!
No, it was all because she was a Faunus. She was the only Faunus that worked at that bank!
Without her job, what would she do? Her family was already going through trying times. The debt her husband accrued from his medical bills was suffocating, and debt collectors were always after them.
And despite all that, they were so close to affording a place to stay. They needed it. Rose and Tulip needed their own bed. Their own room.
Their community was amazing… But to live in such a manner…
Maybe it would be better to leave for Menagerie?
But the collectors wouldn't stop. They had long since usurped legal means to try and collect their money.
Now they were resorting to this?
Chasing her in the street! Harassing her and her husband to get back their Lien? If only the police would do something in this town.
If only a Huntsman here weren't corrupt. She wouldn't have to flee like this desperately to make it to the community for safety!
She tried to cry as she was roughly tossed against the cold and hard wall of the alley. She nearly made it back… Maybe if she were lucky, Mahony or her father would hear her…
But as the man's hand covered her mouth, tears welled in her eyes. She just wanted to bite him and run, but his rough hands pinned her to the wall.
"Now, you better not do anything stupid, dumb bitch." The man grunted, staring deathly into her eyes as he ripped the purse from her shoulder and tossed it to one of his compatriots. "Mr. Nix is displeased he hasn't received any Lien from you or your pathetic husband this last month. It's time to pay up."
"Cornel, there ain't shit in here!" The other thug growled, tossing her purse to the alley street. "They ain't got the Lien. I say we take it from here another way."
"That isn't our job, you sick fuck." Cornel hissed, turning back to his goons and spitting at the other who spoke. "Get your act together, or Mr. Nix will cut you from the payroll. We're only here to collect and send a message."
"And because you don't have anything, let me be perfectly clear about this," Cornel pushed her firmly against the wall. "If you don't want anything happening to your husband or children, you better pay up before the end of the week. Got it?"
She froze, shivering as his hostile gaze burned into her retinas. He meant it. She didn't want anything to happen to her children or her husband. They meant everything…
"Aaahhh!"
She blinked. Faster than she could see, she saw his two compatriots suddenly vanish. Was there a blur of orange? And another of black?
Her eyes shifted to the wall. The one who threatened to do something to her was slumped against the wall. Where was the other? Her gaze moved up, and she gasped beneath his hand, causing him to swivel.
He was hung up by faintly visible wires, screaming bloody murder.
"Get me down from here!"
Cornel immediately released her as he turned to see the same thing. She fell to her knees, clutching her chest, attempting to catch her breath.
Someone was here? Someone was helping her?
"What the hell?" Cornel scanned the alley, desperately trying to find who did this. "Come on out, whoever you are! Face me!"
"As you wish!" A feminine voice cried.
A young Faunus leapt from above, her golden eyes sparkling in the darkness as she held two separate black blades. Cornel snarled as he stepped toward her. "Who do you think you are? Do you know who we are? Who you are messing with?"
"My name is Blake Belladonna." Blake hissed, matching the man's intense glare. "And I don't give a damn who you are. You mess with one of us; you mess with all of us!"
A gasp escaped her mouth. Belladonna? This young Faunus… Was she… Did they have a daughter?
"So that's what this is? Fine! I'll show you who your better is!" Cornel screamed, rushing toward Blake.
Only to be flung into the wall, his left arm locked and pinned behind his back. A young fox Faunus with short, blonde locks pinned Cornel to the wall just as she had been earlier.
"Naruto! I had him!" Blake hissed, one of her blades folding and magnetically attaching to the other before she sheathed it on her back.
"I know, I know! I get you!" Naruto tried to calm his partner with a smile. "But I'd rather him be conscious. We have a mission. This guy might have something, ya know?"
"Fine." Blake huffed as she turned away, a hint of annoyance and… Understanding? Her attention shifted to her as she walked over and knelt beside her, a soft, comforting smile adorning her expression. "Here, let me help you."
"You don't know who you are messing with, punk!"
"Mah, I know exactly who I'm dealing with!"
"Aryl… Aryl Hunt." Aryl breathed heavily, attempting to catch her breath while glancing at Naruto, pushing Cornel further into the wall. "Thank you. Thank you so much. You don't know…"
"You don't have to thank me. Just doing our job." Blake smiled, assisting Aryl to her feet."As a Huntress, stopping matters like this is just as much a part of the job as hunting Grimm."
Aryl flushed as Blake assisted her to her feet while checking her for any injuries. If this young Huntress only knew…
"Are you okay with giving a statement?" Blake asked, giving Aryl a concerned glance. "I know it might be difficult, but anything you say can help keep these guys behind bars for a while."
Aryl winced and shook her head. Yes, she was very naive. They would be back on the street by tomorrow. She knew better than to say anything…
"Okay," Blake frowned, furrowing her brow. "At the very least, let me help see you home while my partner cleans up here."
"We have to look out for each other, you know?"
Frustration couldn't describe what he was feeling. It was far beyond that.
Naruto never expected this to take so long. He was a shinobi by trade. He received training on how to find and search for people. Mostly from Jiraiya in the wilderness, but he still had some training in it! Finding someone in an urban environment was something else.
Outside of locating tracks and gathering information, this was a skill he lacked. In fairness, he still thought he was making some headway, learning about this mysterious new presence in the underbelly, but no one knew anything else!
At this rate, he was gonna have to hit someone at the top! This Nyx person almost felt like Gatou… He might know something.
Naruto exhaled. He needed to clear his mind. Focus. He lacked many of his old abilities since his chakra converted to Aura. While many principles were similar, they functioned differently. Luckily, his raw physicality was left unscathed. At least he knew that he could still win any fight if it came down to it.
Back home, there weren't many that could keep pace with him. He had not come across anyone who could complete here in this new world.
At least not yet.
That was why he was still training. Meditating. Learning how to wield his Aura. Once he was a little more confident on it, attempting to draw upon Natural Energy and see if he could use that technique again.
But that was for later. He had to work on getting back his old techniques. It felt weird being unable to use Shadow Clone. The Rasengan! Naruto was close on the latter, but the Clones still felt they would take a while.
It felt like he was attempting to learn the standard Clone technique.
Not to mention, supposedly, everyone had a wacky and cool Semblance here in Remnant. And if he had Aura, he wanted to know what his would be!
Blake had Shadow Clones! His signature technique! Sure, they were a little different in execution, but they were very similar to his, regardless!
That meant he had to be able to make clones again, right?
Naruto sighed as the morning sun peaked through his window. It was time to start the day.
"Better get to the shower before Blake does," Naruto muttered and shook his head, grimacing as he rubbed his jaw. "Don't want to barge in on her accidentally… She's got a hook Sakura would be proud of…"
A grin spread across Naruto's features, and a lecherous snicker followed.
"And a body that would make Ino jealous."
Warm water cascaded, washing the suds she lathered in to cleanse the dirt from her hair. Blake hissed as she slid her fingers through a knot in her locks, loosening it.
It had been a little while since she had taken a shower. They would spend several days at a time out, searching for clues of the vague descriptions of three individuals. Her long, luxurious hair and the fur of her ears were challenging to maintain.
Perhaps it was time to cut her hair again… But she didn't want to look like her mother…
Exhaling, Blake stepped out of the shower, took the towel from the rack, and ran it through her hair until it was dry. Wrapping it around her waist, she sent a dark glare toward the door as she walked to the mirror. She knew Naruto had beaten her to the shower this morning, but she lacked trust in him on this matter.
He was trained and raised by that lecher, and when he was younger, he was known to sneak a peek at young ladies.
Blake flushed, sending a longing glance toward the door. Did that mean… Was he… No! No! He had his flower back home…
And she didn't want anything to do with men for a while. Not after…
"Who would want me, anyway?" Blake softly exhaled, looking into the mirror and her image within before wincing and turning away. All she saw was someone who was weak and unattractive.
A coward who was only good at running.
"Better get dressed," Blake mumbled, running the towel over her figure.
They had a meeting with the person who gave them those vague descriptions of the person they were looking for. Maybe he had more information. Anything was better than what they had!
Blake and hundreds of dark-haired, fair but pale-skinned young women fit one of the descriptions they were given!
Honestly, she was glad Naruto went in the direction he had. Cleaning up the scum on the street and attempting to find information through the dregs on someone new. They had found more information that way than based on what they were given.
And now, after last night… Seeing how many Faunus were in that settlement…
Blake's heart sank. There had to be something they could do. Something she could do. She didn't want to see her people, or anyone for that matter, living like that.
A spark twinkled in her eyes as she slid her gear on. It was time to make a difference. That was what Huntress was supposed to do.
And she was going to make one.
Of all the places for them to meet their contact. Here? This was an arcade?
Blake scrunched her brow and glanced toward Naruto. "Are you sure he's here? This seems like a strange place to meet someone that Ozpin trusts."
"Maybe he enjoys games?" Naruto shrugged, rechecking his scroll before grinning. "He changed it here, so let's head on in and meet the man. Maybe play a game or two…"
"You like this stuff?" Blake tilted her head oddly. There was nothing written in the book about that.
She wasn't surprised. She doubted every detail would be written. Some things were extraneous.
Not to mention, technology was all over the place throughout the book. She shouldn't be surprised if he knew what an arcade was.
"Well, yeah." Naruto laughed and nodded. "Ever since I was a kid. Jiji… Oh, um, I guess you would know him as the Old Village Leader from the book… Jiji got me a game station when I first moved into my apartment when I was young. I played it for years… I still dust it off now and then."
"Huh, I didn't know." Blake pursed her lips. A faint smile spread on her lips. "Maybe we should take a break after this meeting. I could show you a thing or two. After all, I can imagine the games here are nothing like those in the Village of Leaves."
"Oh, is that a challenge? Bring it on!" Naruto scrunched his face in mock anger before grinning. "I take on anyone who thinks they can best Naruto Uzumaki!"
"Let's go!"
Naruto was instantly hooked.
This place was electric! All these cool holographic games! Old school arcade cabinets that were familiar to those back home! Consoles that looked much more advanced than anything he had seen were up for sale. And best yet, the place was relatively sparse with people! A few kids here and there! But most games were freed up to play!
This place was fantastic! They would definitely have to take a short break after this meeting.
Now, where was…
"Ah! Can't I catch a break!" A young feminine shrill broke through the variety of music coursing through the arcade. "Come on, Uncle Qrow! Can't I just win once?"
"Found 'em," Naruto grinned, locating the voice to see a teenage girl dressed in a black corset and skirt with red trimming complaining to a chuckling man, roughly in his later years, with greying black hair that matched the description Ozpin had given him.
Next to them was a fiery, buxom blonde wearing a somewhat revealing jacket, crop top, and shorts combo laughing. "And how does that build character? Gotta learn how to lose! Now, give it up, Rubes. It's my turn to take down Uncle Qrow. He's not gonna best me this time!"
"Like you can, Yang! He'll kick your butt too!" The teenage girl called Rubes huffed and let her sister through.
"I can beat you both after lunch. I have some business to attend to with some co-workers before you two found me and dragged me here." A smirking Qrow laughed, unphased by the daggers his nieces gave him before he motioned toward Naruto and Blake.
"Ah, really?" Ruby frowned before wincing, glancing in their direction. Her head lifted, and she curiously pursed her lips, sharing a look with her sister for a brief moment. She then flashed a smile and nodded at Qrow. "Oh, okay? But you better return Uncle Qrow! We haven't seen you in months!"
"You can't just be flaking out on your responsibilities! Dad would be annoyed to hear ya left us alone again!" Yang placed her hand on her hip and glared at Qrow.
"Heh, you both get yourself into trouble without my help." Qrow threw a shaded glare at his nieces before faintly smiling, waving them off, and walking to Naruto. "Now, get out of here, would ya? You're cramping my style."
"What style?!" Yang countered with a wide grin, and Ruby snickered. Smirking at her Uncle's glower, Yang turned to Ruby and motioned her to follow. "Ah, let's give the old man his space, Rubes. I found this cool noodle stand nearby…"
Naruto's ears twitched. Did that girl say noodles? …Could it be?
He was going to have to find that place later.
"Sorry about that. They kind of found me this morning, and I had to entertain them," Qrow restlessly rubbed the back of his head, watching and ensuring his two nieces left before his gaze sharpened onto them. "So… You're the kids that Oz hired? …Don't look like much… But neither did that little brat when she cut me and escaped my clutches."
"I get that a lot." Naruto grinned widely and chuckled. "Guess Ice Cream girl bested you too, huh?"
"There isn't a Huntsman or Huntress in Vale that hasn't. She's a slippery one with that Semblance of hers." Qrow exhaled before shaking his head. "Guess we share what we know so far. I heard you have been making waves by going after the underground and searching for them. Gotta say it's bold, and it is gonna put a target on your head. You better be careful. There are some groups who have their fingers in the underground that won't like someone coming in and tearing it apart just to find one person."
"I don't care. People like that are scum and need to be dealt with. And Oz did not give me much to go. It was the only thing that made sense to do. See if I could root them out or get someone to point me in the correct direction." Naruto explained his reasoning before shaking his head.
Qrow's eyes sharpened, inspecting Naruto before a thin smirk graced his features. "Can't say I disagree… You might be on the right track. I have a suspicion that the group that attacked Amber split up to throw me off their trail. And I expect they might be making a power play here."
"It feels like something big is about to happen."
How much he adored noodles. Naruto had to admit he missed Ichiraku's ramen and wished there was a ramen stand somewhere in Vale, but this Udon stand would suffice.
For now.
Udon was tasty. It simply wasn't his precious ramen.
The bigger question was, how did Blake order a bowl of fish at a noodle stand?! Why did everyone seem to sell that?!
"What?" Blake screwed her nose and gave Naruto an annoyed glare.
"It's weird looking through a mirror," Naruto's lips curled as he responded, causing Blake to glower, look at her fish, and curse.
"Dammit. I'm not addicted…" Blake murmured before she slumped over, defeated.
Naruto only patted Blake on the back. A dark aura hovered over her head. "I feel like you patronizing me…"
"Not at all!" Naruto chirped and shook his head. "I was just remarking on how everyone else must have felt like when I ate ramen everywhere we went, including restaurants that didn't serve it!"
Blake scowled before sighing in exasperation, picking at the fish in her bowl while grumbling under her breath.
Naruto furrowed his brow, perplexed at Blake's reaction. He didn't mean any offense by it. He was just making a note…
His eyes shifted to the side, turning his head at a slight angle to look behind him, sensing a swath of negative energy approaching. Kurama may not have come with him to Remnant, but at the very least, he left a mark of his presence within him.
He was thankful for that.
"Heads up," Naruto lowered his head, acting like he was eating another bite of Udon, and whispered to Blake. "We got company coming."
Blake repressed a hiss, following his lead and staying calm. It wasn't difficult for her. She was far more tempered than he was.
With a flick of his eyes, Naruto had her follow where he was looking, and she frowned. "That's the guy from last night? He's out already. Huh, so he was right about the corruption in some of the departments here."
"Looks like it," Naruto somberly responded before offering an apology to the Udon stand's owner, sliding several cards of Lien toward them. "Sorry about this. We'll try to prevent collateral… But you better get back. Just in case, ya know?"
Naruto released a sigh, lamenting what was to come as the group of thugs approached. Watching the stand owner give a look of distress as he awkwardly nodded and moved away left Naruto bothered. But it always bothered him when others put people in danger unnecessarily.
And it pissed him off.
"They let you out, huh?" Naruto acknowledged the goons while taking a bite of his udon. The group of thugs stopped in their tracks as Naruto turned in his seat toward them with an irked expression.
"Listen here, you punk! I told ya you didn't know who you were messing with!" Cornel snarled in a multi-colored suit, with a stun baton extending into his left hand. "Mr. Nix wants a word with ya. He would rather you come quietly… But I don't."
"Huh, funny enough, I need to talk to him." Naruto confidently smirked. "But, yeah, I'm not gonna give ya that satisfaction. I'll talk to him when I'm ready."
"You think you are funny! Get 'em!" Cornel screamed, pointing his baton, and the rest of the gang leapt forward.
Only for a heeled boot to smash into his jaw. Blake quickly crouched and rolled her eyes as several other thugs that rushed in were tossed back into the street, almost simultaneously. "Guess we're doing this! Fine by me! He's mine this time!"
"Have at 'em." Naruto stepped beside Blake, cracking his knuckles. "No need to hold back. We only need his scroll this time around."
"I want to see how he got out."
"Woah, this is awesome! She kicked him right in the face! Repeatedly!" An excited voice resonated, gazing through the chain fencing.
Silver eyes shone with dazzling sparkles. She had been apprehensive of her sister's ideal at first. They were following people they didn't know! Sure, she was interested in them. Who wouldn't be in a Huntsman and Huntress the same age as her sister?
But they were supposed to meet back up with Uncle Qrow after lunch. He would be suspicious when they didn't return. If he called Dad, they would be in so much trouble when they found out what they were doing!
Well, she would be… Yang had her in-training license since she was heading to Beacon in a month.
So she had to spend as much time with her as she could! There wasn't much time left to hang out…
"Keep it down, Rubes! Don't get us caught! We don't know how good they are!" Yang hushed, holding her finger to her lips.
Despite her words, Ruby could tell Yang radiated a nervous energy. She did everything in her power to keep from jumping into the fray of combat. Ember Celica clicked several times as if she was thinking about it but held back, wanting to learn more about their Uncle's co-workers.
Maybe a little more about what his actual job was? Sure, he was a Huntsman, but he was always so secretive, besides telling them about a few remarkable stories of his encounters!
Her eyes shifted as one of the goons that attacked them bounced and skidded to a stop on the street just before them, unconscious.
"They seem pretty good to me," Ruby said with a grin before returning her gaze to the fight. "He's fast. I can only see his blur when he moves."
"Say what now?" Yang's eyes sharpened, paying closer to the blonde's movements.
She observed as the suited thugs were dispatched effortlessly with single, well-placed blows, never brandishing a weapon. They moved so quickly that her sister struggled to keep up.
Her sister, who, while using her Semblance, was faster than anyone else she knew or had seen!
Ruby could see Yang sweat. She could blame her for feeling anxious. It was something to know that someone around their age was so skilled that she could compare them to her Dad and Uncle.
"How are you two doing?" Ruby and Yang jolted their attention ahead to see the blond lifting the knocked-out henchmen that had landed before them on his shoulder, flashing a grin toward them. "If you're trying to be sneaky, you really shouldn't use something that loud. Blake and I can easily hear that thing."
"I told you we should have followed on foot." Ruby scowled, throwing a shaded glare at her sister.
"Okay, my mistake. We'll go with your plan next time." Yang grunted in annoyance before leaping off Bumblebee and walking toward Naruto. "So you know we've been following you? What? Are you gonna tell our Uncle?"
"Nah. I would have done the same." Naruto laughed and scratched his head, surprising Ruby and Yang, before flicking out a scroll in his free hand. "I was actually wondering…"
"Do either of you know how to hack or someone that does? This might have some info on it that may help us?"
And cut!
Those familiar with the original Fox of Remnant will likely immediately a key OC and villain from the original. So rest assured, this is a full rewrite that is meant to feature a Naruto that is written in character and that stays to the original themes of the story, including a Naruto X Blake ship, without straying from it.
So I do hope you enjoyed. If you got a minute, I'd love to hear from ya. It always makes my day to see comments/reviews. And I'll eventually get back to ya, if I can!
Until next time my friends, Peace.
