Sparks Fly for Magnemite
We now join our heroes as they find themselves in a factory town called Gringey City.
"This is a really weird city" Ash said "Lots of factories, but no people"
"You got that right" Jake added "The smell around here is awful"
"Ivysaur" Ivysaur said as it held it's paw over it's nose
"Cubone" Cubone added
Misty looks in her book
"This place is called Gringey City" she said
"Gringey? Never heard of it" Ash said
"Me neither" Green added
"It use to be a lively busy place with all these factories here" Misty informed
"Yeah. They kinda went overboard with factories. Pollution ruined the air and the water here." Brock added
"You're right about that, Brock" Jake said "Who would want to live in a place like this?"
"I guess we won't find any Pokémon here." Ash said
Meanwhile, Pikachu was not feeling well.
"Pika" he said weakly
Ivysaur and Cubone took notice of this
"Ivysaur" Ivysaur said concerned
"Cubone" Cubone added
The gang then looks down at Pikachu
"Is Pikachu alright?" Green asked
"Pikachu what's wrong?" Ash asked
"He looks doesn't look so good" Jake said
Pikachu then starts to fall over
"Pikachu!" Ash yelled as he caught him
But Ash ended up getting shocked much to everyone's shock.
"Ash, are you alright?" Jake asked
"I think so" Ash replied
"This is really bad" Jake said "We need to get to a Pokémon Center fast!"
"Right!" the gang said
"Do you still have those rubber gloves, Ash?" Jake asked
"I sure do" Ash said before getting shocked by Pikachu again
The gang were rushing through Gringey City looking for a Pokémon Center. Ash was wearing rubber gloves while holding Pikachu
"Please be alright, Pikachu" Green said with worry
"Hold on, Pikachu! We'll get you to the Pokémon Center as soon as we can!" Ash said to his Pokémon
Ivysaur and Cubone looked at Pikachu with worry. Jake then spots a Pokémon Center
"There's the Pokémon Center" Jake said
They all rushed through the door. Once they were inside, the gang reached the counter. Ash then begins to ring a bell
"Hey nurse!" he yelled as he rings the bell some more "Hey nurse!"
Nurse Joy came out while yawning
"Do you kids have any idea just what time it is?" she asked "Don't you know that you should be sleeping now."
"I'm sorry, but there's something really wrong with my Pikachu." Ash said
Nurse Joy yawned again
"A cold" she simply said
"Huh?" Jake and Green said confused
Ivysaur and Cubone both fell down from this
"This is no cold! Your sisters and cousins were a lot more helpful!" Ash said angrily
"There's no need to get excited. Look. Sparks are coming from its cheeks, right? That's an early symptom of a cold in electric rodent Pokémon." Nurse Joy explained with a yawn "If you leave him here overnight, I'm sure it'll be fine in the morning."
"Ms?" Ash asked
"Hmmmm" Nurse Joy hummed
"Excuse me, but are you, by any chance, the oddball in your family?" Ash asked
' Oh, no. It's all my other relatives that are odd." Nurse Joy replied
This confuses the gang
"Cubone?" Cubone said with a sweat drop
Meanwhile in the polluted waters of Gringey City, some purple sludge like creatures emerged. They then begin to swarm the water entrance which actually leads to a water intake valve for a hydroelectric power plant. The blockage to the intake valve resulted in the loss of power to Gringey City. The worker that worked in the plant took notice of this.
"What's that?" one of the worker asked
"Our generator's completely shut down! The water intake valve is totally jammed!" the second worker informed
"It can't be" the first worker said in disbelief
Back at the Pokémon Center, the gang and Nurse Joy head to a room where there are some Pokémon resting on beds with glasses covering each of them
"What happen to these Pokémon?" Ash asked
"They're in intensive care. If we don't get the power back soon, well, I just don't want to think about what would happen!" Nurse Joy said
"Don't just stand there! We have to save them!" Ash yelled
"Joy, please do something!" Misty added
"There's gotta be something you can do!" Green added
"I don't know what to do" Nurse Joy said sadly
"Hey, stop giving Joy a hard time! There's nothing that she can do!" Brock yelled
"Brock is right. What we need to do is try to restore the power" Jake said
"Then let's go" Ash said
The gang begins to leave. Pikachu, who is held by Nurse Joy, reaches out to them as he wants to go with Ash. They all turn to him
"Pikachu, we'll be back when the power's back on." Ash assured
"For now, just rest" Jake added "We'll see ya soon"
"Ivysaur" Ivysaur assured
"Cubone" Cubone added
They then left the Pokémon Center
"Good luck everybody" Nurse Joy said
The gang made their way to the Gringey City police department where they asked Officer Jenny about the power
"I'm trying to find out, too, but there's no answer at the power plant!" Officer Jenny said as she tries to answer the phone
" We don't have much time!" Ash yelled
"Guess we'll have to go to the power plant ourselves" Green said
"What does the power plant look like?" Misty asked
"You can't miss it! It's the big building with the smoke stacks, there." Officer Jenny said as she points to the left
"Thank you, Officer Jenny" Jake said
"You're welcome" Officer Jenny replied
"Alright, let's go! Huh?" Ash said
The gang look to see a bush rustling
"Who's there?" Green asked
"Cubone?" Cubone asked
Pikachu then came out of the bush
"Pikachu" Ash said
The gang rushed over to Pikachu
"What's Pikachu doing out here?" Green asked
"He must've escaped the Pokémon Center and followed us" Jake guessed
"Pikachu, you should be back at the Pokémon Center." Ash said
"Ivysaur saur" Ivysaur said as it told Pikachu to go back
But Pikachu shook his head
"You don't want to go back?" Jake asked
Pikachu nods his head
"I don't get it" Ash puzzled
"Just think about it, Ash. Pikachu's afraid we'll leave and we won't come back." Misty said
Pikachu nods his head in confirmation
"See?" Misty said
"I guess we'll have to bring Pikachu with us" Green said
"She's right, Ash. And it's like you said: we don't have much time." Jake added
"Hmmm" Ash thought "Okay. You can come along. But, remember, you gotta take it easy."
Pikachu happily jumps into Ash's arms which zaps him. Jake, Green, Ivysaur, and Cubone took a few steps back as that happened. Unbeknownst to them, someone was watching them
The gang started down the path to the direction of the power plant. They were then in front of it
"So this is the power plant?" Green asked
"Yep. This is it" Ash replied
"Let's check inside" Misty said
"Stay close to us, you two" Jake said to his Pokémon
Ivysaur and Cubone both nod their heads. The gang open the entrance to the power plant
"Hello? Is anybody in here?" Ash called
"It looks abandoned" Jake said as he looks around
"If no one's here, we might as well look around, huh?" Ash called
The gang head inside while searching the place
"Something's really weird. Why isn't anybody working here?" Brock asked
Misty takes a look at a map on the wall
"It looks like the central control room's down that way." she said
"Good thing this place has a map" Green said
The gang went down the halls of the power plant. Suddenly, Misty begins to shudder as she felt a presence behind her
"Are you okay, Misty?" Green asked as she looked at her
"Something's following us." Misty replied
The gang looks at her
"The place is deserted. Nobody's here." Ash said
"I know I heard something back there." Misty said completely terrified
Jakes looks around the hallways
"Are you sure? Cause I don't see anything" he said
"Listen, Misty, it's okay if you're a total chicken. Brock, Jake, Green, and I are brave enough to handle things here" Ash teased
"I'm not a chicken, you little twerp! There was something back there whether you believe me or not!" Misty snapped
"Okay, okay. Let's just..." Brock begin
Before he can finish his sentence he and the rest of the gang were spooked by something behind Ash. Even Ivysaur and Cubone were startled
" Chill out?" Ash asked
The gang shooked their heads
"There's something..." Jake began
"Right behind you" Green finished while shivering
Ash then turns around, but what was behind him had vanished
" Alright! If anybody's there, you can come on out! And if you're a ghost or a monster, you can stay where you are and we won't bother you." he said
" AND YOU CALL ME CHICKEN?! YOU'RE A TOTAL COWARD!" Misty screamed
"Maybe not a total coward" Ash said timidly
"You're just a..." Misty began
"Knock it off! Both of you!" Jake scolded
Just then something appeared behind Pikachu, Ivysaur, and Cubone which spooks them. They then called to their trainers
"Be quiet Pikachu" Ash said with fright
"Ivysaur, Cubone, quiet down" Jake said also with fright
The Pokémon continue to call to them
"Keep it down you guys. You're scaring us" Jake said
"Be quiet" Ash said
But the Pokémon kept going
"Guys, we said..." Jake scolded as the he and his friends turned around
When they turned around, they see the thing that was behind Pikachu, Ivysaur, and Cubone.
Ash, Brock, and Misty huddled together while Jake and Green held each other as they backed against a wall. Ivysaur and Cubone did the same as they trembled
"What is that thing?" Ash asked
The gang continue to tremble at the thing that was behind Pikachu
"What is that thing? What is it?" Ash asked
The thing behind it is actually a ball like Pokémon with magnets on the side
"Magnemite"
Jake sighs in relief as he recgonizes it
"It's okay guys. It's just a Magnemite" he said
"Magnemite? Is that a Pokémon?" Ash asked as he takes out his Pokédex
Ash's Pokédex: Magnemite, a Magnet Pokémon. Its means of floating through the air are not understood. This very mysterious Pokémon is of the Electric type.
"I guess that answers your question, Ash" Green said
Jake and Green then realized that they were still hugging each other. They let go and turns away with a shy look on their faces. Ivysaur snickers at this while Cubone just looked puzzled
"What's a Pokémon like that doing here?" Ash asked
"It caused the blackout! Magnemite shut down the power plant!" Misty said
"That's impossible!" Green protested
"Green's right. This one? By itself? No way!" Brock said
"And if a Magnemite were to cause a blackout, it would take a whole swarm of them to do that" Jake pointed out
"Well, Dexter said it was mysterious." Misty said
"Great! I'll capture it, then we can check it out!" Ash said as he takes out an empty Poké Ball
"Wait a minute! That Magnemite doesn't look like it wants to battle." Misty said
Magnemite was seen circling around Pikachu
"What's with this thing? Why is it circling Pikachu?" Ash asked
"It seems to like Pikachu" Brock said
Magnemite blushes when Pikachu's cheeks begin to spark
"This Magnemite's blushing, like it's in love or something." Misty said
"Love?" Ash asked
"But Magnemite are genderless Pokémon. How can they love?" Jake asked
" If it were an animal Pokémon, I could understand. But how can an inorganic Pokémon like Magnemite fall in love with an electric rodent?" Brock asked
Magnemite then begins to follow Pikachu around
"Magnemite's following Pikachu all over the place, almost like it's a streaker, or something." Ash said
"Ash, you mean a stalker." Brock corrected
" Well, like I said, this Magnemite really likes Pikachu." Misty said as Magnemite continues to follow Pikachu
"It does seem attracted to him" Green giggled "Like an actual magnet"
"You can say that again" Jake said
"But Pikachu doesn't like it. Hey, you, Magnemite! Cut it out!" Ash snapped
Magnemite then stops following Pikachu and floats in the opposite direction. Pikachu then hid behind his trainer and became satisfied as the Magnemite left
"Guess Magnemite gave up" Ash said
"I wonder why it left" Green said
Brock then begins to sniff the air
"Do you smell that?" he asked
The rest of the gang sniffs the air
"I do" Ash replied
"So do I" Misty added
"Me too" Jake added
"Me three" Green said
"Saur" Ivysaur said as it sniffs the air
"Bone" Cubone added
Suddenly, the vent grate from a ceiling hits the ground. Everyone turns to see some sludge like creatures fall in
"Grimer!"
"Grimer!"
The gang begins to hold their nose due to the smell
"It's those things!" Brock said
"I guess we all know where the smell is coming from" Jake added
"They stink!" Misty yelled as she held her hand over her nose
"I can't breathe!" Green yelled as she also covered her nose
"What are they?" Ash asked
"I think they're called Grimer" Jake replied
Ivysaur held it's nose while Cubone hid behind Ivysaur in fright. Ash takes out his Pokédex and scans Grimer
Ash's Pokédex: Grimer, a Sludge Pokémon. Born from sludge, these Pokémon specialize in Sludge attacks.
Then more Grimer appeared
"Magnemite must've disappeared because of these things!" Brock said
"Is this what sludge smells like? It really stinks!" Ash yelled
"Don't forget putrid!" Jake added
This seem to offend the Grimers
"Ash! Jake! Don't say anything that might insult their Pokémon pride or make them mad." Brock warned
"I'm sorry. You have such a unique scent, I should've known it was the aroma of sludge." Ash said
"Yeah. It's a different fragrance, but I'm sure you smell good in your own way" Jake added
"You can call it whatever you want, but it still stinks!" Misty yelled
Alarmed, Ash, Jake, Brock, and Green covered Misty's mouth
"Shut up, Misty!" they yelled
Suddenly, a large sludge like creature appeared behind the Grimers. Cubone yelled before ducking behind Ivysaur. The gang were shocked at the sight of it
"It's huge!" Ash yelled
"What is that?" Green asked
"Grimer's grandpa?" Misty guessed
Ash takes out his Pokédex and scans it
Ash's Pokédex: Muk, Grimer's evolved form. Use extreme caution, as its slimy form contains poison.
"Looks like Muk is the leader of these Grimers" Jake said
"That's not good news" Brock said
"The smell is getting worse" Misty added
"Pika" Pikachu said as he held his nose
"Saur" Ivysaur said as it backed away
"Bone" Cubone said as he backed away too
Muk points ahead as it commands the Grimers to attack
"Run!" Green yelled
The gang raced away with the Grimers in pursuit
"Why'd you have to open your mouth and make the Grimer mad, Misty?!" Ash asked
"I had to open my mouth! I couldn't use my nose!" Misty replied
"Well next time think it!" Jake said
Cubone tripped on the ground. Seeing the Grimer coming near him made Cubone scream. Luckily, Ivysaur grabs him with it's vines and placed Cubone on it's back as they continue running. As the gang round the corner, Ash ran into one of the plant workers.
"What are you doing here?!" one of the plant workers demanded
"I'm Brock. This is Misty, Jake, and Green. We're here to help..." Brock said
"Skip the introductions, we gotta get out of here!" Misty yelled
"Yeah. There's a swarm of Grimers after us!" added Green
Suddenly, the Grimer round the corner much to the fright of Pikachu, Ivysaur, and Cubone. Even the plant workers were frighteneded by the Grimer swarm
"The Grimer are here too!" one of the plant workers yelled
"Back to the control room!" the other plant workers added
The plant workers ran for it with the gang running after them
"Hey! Wait for us!" Ash yelled
They then reached the control and shut the door.
"Okay. We should be safe. For now that is" Jake panted
"Ivysaur" Ivysaur said
"Cubone" Cubone added
"Tell us what's going on! This blackout is a disaster to the city! Lots of Pokémon are gonna die at the Pokémon Center if the power doesn't come back soon!" Ash said
Back at the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy was looking at the Pokémon in intensive care with a worried look
"Hang in there. Those trainers are gonna get the power back on real soon, I'm sure. At least, I hope so." she said
"They need that power!" Ash said
"Can't you guys do anything to bring it back?" Jake asked
"We can't" one of the plant workers replied "There are so many Grimer, that they're blocking the sea water intake."
"We've got to bring the water to a boil, so that it can turn the turbines, or the generator won't work at all." the second plant worker explained
"So do something!" Ash yelled
"I'm afraid that's easy to say. We've been trying to..." the plant worker began
The gang heard a thud. They look to see Brock trying to hold the door
"Ash! Jake! The Grimer are, ramming the door! I can't hold it!" he yelled
"Hang on, Brock!" Jake yelled
They all ran over to the door to help the former Pewter City Gym leader
"I hate to say it, but if we don't act fast, we'll be on the Muk's menu!" Misty said
"But what can we do?" Ash asked
The gang tries to hold the door, but the Grimer were able to break through and swarm in
"We're surrounded!" Green yelled
Ivysaur with Cubone on his back steps back as the Grimers advanced towards them
"You five are all Pokémon trainers, right? You've gotta use your Pokémon to help us out!" the plant worker said
"That's right! If you can get rid of the Grimer, the generator will work." the second plant worker said
"What do you expect us to do? Pikachu is sick! He won't be able to take on all of those Grimer at once!" Ash said
"We've got no choice" Jake said as he takes out his Poké Ball "Pikachu, I choose you!"
He throws his Poké Ball and his Pikachu comes out
"Pikachu!" she said as she got ready to battle
Ash's Pikachu then weakly steps up. Jake's Pikachu looks at him with worry
"Pikachu, you and Jake's Pikachu are the only ones that can help us" Ash said "Pikachu, use your Thundershock!"
"Use your Thundershock too, Pikachu!" Jake ordered
Both Pikachus used their Thundershock on two Grimers which knocks them out. But a few more Grimers came up
"It's no good. There's too many of them" Ash said
The Grimers and Muk were getting closer. Green held onto Jake with fright. Just as all hope seems lost, Magnemite and a few other magnet like Pokémon came out of the ventillation shaft
"What are they?" Ash asked
"Magnemite and their evolved form, Magneton! They're friends of our stalker!" Brock explained
"Magneton" Jake said as he takes out his Pokédex and scans Magneton
Jake's Pokédex: Magneton, the Magnet Pokémon. Formed by several Magnemites linked together. They frequently appear when sunspots flare up.
All the Magnetons used their Electric attacks to zap the Grimers. Unable to handle it anymore, the Grimers retreated as the Magnetons chased after them. Another Electric attack from the Magneton also caused the Grimers that were blocking the water intake, to flee as well. With the water intake cleared, the generator is able to start back up and the power was restored. The gang cheered as that happened
"The lights are on!" Ash said
"And all the power is back on" Jake added
Ivysaur, Jake's Pikachu, and Cubone all cheered
The two plant workers all checked on the monitors
"The turbine's moving again!" the second worker said
"The Grimer have all cleared away from the sea water intake valve!" the first worker added
"Yes!" Ash cheered
"I wouldn't celebrate just yet" Green said
"Green's right. There's still two left" Misty said
The gang look to see Muk and one of the Grimers still present
"An adult Muk" Ash said
"And one of the Grimers" Jake added
Muk and Grimer went up to them preparing to battle
"Ash, I'll handle Grimer. You take care of Muk" Jake said
"Right" Ash said
"Pikachu, use your Thundershock on Grimer" Jake ordered
Jake's Pikachu did just that as she zaps Grimer. Grimer recovers from the attack and spews out Sludge at her
"That must be Sludge attack. Dodge it Pikachu!" Jake ordered
Jake Pikachu dodges the Sludge attack. Meanwhile, Ash's Pikachu was facing off against Muk
"Pikachu, Thundershock!" Ash commanded
Ash's Pikachu used Thundershock on Muk. But Muk was a little resistant to the attack]
"Oh man. That's some pretty strong sludge" Ash commented
Just then, Magnemite floats in and used Thundershock on Muk. Ash's Pikachu combined it's Thundershock with Magnemites to cause even more damage to Muk. Jake's Pikachu continues to dodge Grimer's Sludge attack.
"Enough's enough! Pikachu, Thunder Wave attack" Jake yelled
Pikachu unleashes Thunder Wave which zaps Grimer and paralyzes it
"Now, one more Thunder Shock attack. Full power!" Jake ordered
Jake's Pikachu unleashes Thundershock on Grimer which causes it damage
Both Muk and Grimer both slumped down. Ash and Jake both took out their Poké Balls
"Poké Ball go!" they both yelled
The Poké Balls hit both Muk and Grimer and sucked them in. The Poké Balls begins to shake. The gang watched it shake until they both ping making the captures a success.
Jake goes over and picks up the Poké Ball that contains Grimer
"Oh yeah! I got a Grimer!" he yelled as he held it up
Grimer's Poké Ball then disappeared as it was sent to Professor Oak's lab. Ash then went to pick up his Poké Ball that contains Muk
"I did it! I captured a Muk! Ash Ketchum saves the day once again!" Ash said
Everyone saved for Jake are a few feet away from Ash while holding their noses
"What's wrong?" he asked
"We can still smell it" Green replied
Outside the power plant, everyone as outside while Ash was fanning out the smell
"The smell comes through the Poké Ball!" he said while holding his nose
This caused everyone to laugh
"That's the bad news. But the good news is Pikachu's one-hundred percent better." Misty informed
"That's right! Pikachu was sick until just a little while ago." Brock added
"But how?" Green asked
"If an electric mouse builds up too much electricity, its body become magnetized, and it seems like it has a cold." the second plant worker explained
Pikachu was shown to be all better just like Misty said
"Wow. We all sure owe a big thank you to Magnemite, here. Don't we?" Ash asked
Magnemite floats down to Pikachu. Pikachu attempts to thank it, but Magnemite completely ignores him
"Hey! Until just a minute ago, that Magnemite was obsessed with Pikachu." Misty said
"What's going on? Now it's completely ignoring Pikachu." Ash said
"Yeah. Why is that?" Green asked
"Maybe Magnemite fall in and out of love just like humans do." Brock guessed
"Could Magnemite have fallen in love at first sight because Pikachu's body was magnetized?" the second plant worker asked
"That must be the reason. Animals are attracted to other animals by scent, so Magnemite are attracted to other Pokémon by their magnetic force. Because Pikachu had built up so much magnetic force, it must've been very attracted to that Magnemite." the first plant worker explained
"No wonder Magnemite was attracted to Pikachu" Jake said
"Yeah" Green said
"Oh" Misty said
"I get it. After Pikachu ran out of electricity, it was no longer magnetized. That's why Magnemite isn't interested in Pikachu anymore." Brock said
Ivysaur and Cubone both nod their heads as they too understood this
"It's a good thing, huh, Pikachu? It won't follow you around anymore." Ash said
"Chu" Pikachu agreed
The gang and the plant workers all begin to laugh
"As they say, all's well that ends well" Jake said
Nobody noticed that some Magnemite and Magneton were attacted to a large magnet attached to a Gyardos submarine which then sunk underwater.
The gang then head back to the Pokémon Center where all of the Pokémon in intensive care were all better. They were seen talking to Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny
"All those Grimer here just prove that the ocean's totally polluted. You guys gotta clean up the sea around here. I know you can do it." Misty said
"Yes. If you don't clean up the pollution, then who will? Everyone of us can make a difference in making our world habitable for both humans and Pokémon" Jake added
Ivysaur and Cubone both nod their heads
"You're right, Misty, Jake. We'll do everything we can to make sure that the ocean is really clean again." Officer Jenny said
"If you clean up the air, and the water, you may just bring this place back to life." Brock said
"And if you do that, then everyone will want to come visit Gringey City" Green said "Not to mention that some Pokémon will come hang around as well"
"Thanks, Ash. Jake. You and your friends worked so hard to make sure all these Pokémon survive, you've inspired me to become a better nurse." Nurse Joy said gratefully
"We salute all of your fine work." Officer Jenny said with a salute
"Oh, please, ladies, that's very nice of you." Ash said
"We just do what other Pokémon trainers would do." Jake added
"Anyway, try to make your city clean." Ash said
"We will. And please come back and visit us." Nurse Joy said "Bye!"
The gang waved goodbye to Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny as they all leave Gringey City and onto to their next destination
Meanwhile in Professor Oak's laboratory, Professor Oak was watching as Ash's Pokémon was being transported to where he is
"It's been quite a while since Ash sent me a new Pokémon. I wonder what he's captured this time." he said with a laugh
Once the transporation was complete, the Poké Ball opens which makes Professor Oak cover his nose due to the odor.
"What is that smell?!" he asked
Muk then appeared in front of him
"Ugh! Jake's new Grimer was bad enough, but what's the idea of sending me a Muk?! Yuck!" Professor Oak yelled in disgust
Jake's new Grimer then tackled Professor Oak from behind which knocks him to the ground. The Pokémon Professor can only sigh as Grimer then hugs him
'This is gonna be a long day' he thought
