Shadows of Dusk

Shanks stood alone on the desolate beach, the sky above bleeding darkness that seemed to mirror his anguish. The ominous glow cast shadows over the once-vibrant island, a place that had been a source of joy and warmth because of a certain boy. Now, it was shrouded in sorrow, as if it, too, had lost its light. And Shanks would not argue with that .

He looked down at his hand, he was clutching a familiar straw hat. with burned sides and bloodstains. It was a grim reminder of what happened .His anchor, his little sunshine, his son in all but name and blood, was gone.

What happened?
How did it come to this?

Everything had begun on that fateful day.

The Red Force crested the waves with a steady hum, the sea as calm as it had ever been. The wind whispered through the rigging, but the usual jovial atmosphere aboard the ship felt strangely absent. Shanks, sitting at the bow, had his eyes fixed on the horizon, lost in thought, when he felt the presence of someone approaching

"Captain!. Garp's ship is in sight!"

Shanks turned, his expression sharpening.

"Permission to board?"

"Granted," he replied, watching the Marine hero's comes in. Garp's visits weren't uncommon ever since Luffy began talking about his pirate ambitions. The old man often came to blame Shanks for "corrupting" his grandson with wild ideas of adventure.

When Garp stepped aboard, Shanks greeted him with his usual ease.

"Garp," Shanks said, forcing a smile. "It's been a while."

But Garp didn't respond. Silence hung in the air, heavier than the sea mist. Shanks' smile faltered as he noticed the look on Garp's face—remorse and pain etched into his features.

Finally, Garp spoke, his voice cold and broken, utterly unlike the boisterous Marine Shanks knew.

"Shanks... I don't like you," he began, his words deliberate. "Never have. You're reckless, dangerous. And I hated how close you got to Luffy. But…" His voice faltered, and for a moment, Shanks thought he saw the faintest glint of tears in the man's eyes.

"But he adored you," Garp continued. "He saw you as a hero. And... I thought you deserved to know what happened ."

The world seemed to stop.

Shanks froze, dread creeping into his chest. He didn't need more words to understand that something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

Gripped by a felling of fear and desperation, Shanks demanded,

"Just spit it out, Garp! What the hell happened to Luffy?!"

Garp didn't respond immediately. His jaw clenched, and he stood there, as if debating whether to speak. When he finally did, his voice was low and fractured.

"He…He's gone…"

Shanks eyes got wide as he hear those words. He stood there not believing a single one of them they hadn't quite reached his mind, as though his heart had not yet allowed him to process them.

"W-what ? Luffy…" Shanks whispered, the name slipping from his lips like a prayer.

He refused to believe him, convinced it was nothing more than a trick to separate him and Luffy. Garp was crazy he wouldn't insist faking his grandson's death for his 'safety raisons'.

Shanks searched Garp's face for any sign of hope .Yet all he saw was the devastation in the older man's eyes.

The world blurred, the waves crashing against the Red Force's hull growing distant, almost unreal. Only one word mattered.

Gone.

It was a word Shanks had never imagined hearing, not about Luffy—the boy with wild dreams, the boy he had sworn to protect, the boy who had become his family.

The beach now felt unbearably vast and empty, the silence deafening. He could almost see a small figure darting across the sand, waving excitedly, that familiar big, bright smile lighting up the shore as they returned.

But there was no one waiting.

Shanks' thoughts spiraled as regret clawed at his chest. If I'd taken him with me… If I'd listened to his wishes…

He had believed that growing up on the sea was too dangerous, that staying behind was safer. But now, he wondered if the ocean, with all its dangers, might have been the only place where Luffy could have truly been safe.

A place where he could see him grow right before his eyes

This island had taken much from Shanks—his arm, his hat, even his devil fruit. But it had given him something far more precious: his rubber-hearted boy. His son.

And now, he was gone. Gone forever
