And here is the second half of Before Ever After.

"What happened?!" Cass cried once she snapped out of her shock.

"It just… grew back," Varian said helplessly, still stunned from what happened.

"I have no idea how this happened, but we'll deal with it later!" Rapunzel said, the step-siblings looking past Cassandra fearfully as a familiar sound echoed toward them. "Let's go!" She grabbed their hands and pulled them toward the bridge, the black rocks emerging from the woods. They ran across the bridge to the horses on the other side. Maximus sensed something was wrong when he saw them coming. He stepped forward to see, but a piece of the bridge cracked under his weight. He stepped back as a gap formed. Another piece broke off, causing the bridge to lurch. The sudden motion sent the two women and Varian tumbling. Cassandra brushed some golden hair from her face before they scrambled to their feet.

They ran until Rapunzel was yanked back with a yelp. "Cassandra! Varian!" she cried, pulling on her hair. "My hair!" It was stuck in a crack on the bridge. Worse, the rocks approached, knocking down trees. Varian backed away in horror as the danger drew closer, feeling responsible…

"Come on!" Cass grabbed his right hand, pulling him over to Rapunzel. The two helped her pull as hard as they could to free her hair, but they could do nothing as the rocks smashed into the bridge. The force caused the bridge to break from the earth, sending it flying into the air. The trio stared, frozen in shock, thinking it would fall on them before the slab fell back down, knocking them off their feet again.

The three looked at each other before getting up and staring at the bridge. The overpass was now broken into four parts, slowly crumbling further beneath them. Rapunzel gritted her teeth as she was pulled forward again, her hair still caught on the stones on the other side. Cass ran forward, planning to cut her hair free as she drew her weapon. However, when she saw her broken sword, she threw it away. She jumped over the pass with Varian following her as they ran toward the piece of caught hair. They were forced to stop when the section holding Rapunzel's hair lowered even more. Rapunzel struggled to keep her footing as she slid on the stones. Seeing her in trouble, Cass and Varian ran back to help her.

The princess was nearly yanked off the platform as the prince and lady-in-waiting grabbed her cloak, struggling against the bridge. "Whoa!" she shouted while sliding forward. Suddenly, Maximus came to the rescue with a loud whinny, jumping over the gap to reach the end of Rapunzel's hair, ignoring the crumbling bridge. Just as the rocks appeared, Max stomped on the stone holding Rapunzel's hair, knocking it loose. The trio snapped backward and fell to the ground as the princess was freed, but they were now stuck on the bridge, as both sides had fallen away. They stood back to back in a precarious balance to avoid falling. On the other side, Max was cornered as the rocks burst from the earth. With no other choice, the guard horse leaped from the crumbling section, racing back to the trio. The girls and Varian cringed as the bridge swayed, falling to their knees before the abyss below. Just as they began to tip over, Max jumped across the gap, prompting them to leap to safety. Rapunzel and Varian landed on his saddle, but Cass fell short, gripping Rapunzel's hair desperately, trying to save herself. Max reached safety with the siblings while the handmaiden screamed, hanging on to the ledge, losing her grip.

"Cassandra!" Rapunzel yelped as Varian and Max gasped in fear.

Just as Cass began to fall, her scream was cut off when Fidella caught her by the back of her tunic. As the horse pulled the handmaiden back onto solid ground, the bridge gave out entirely with an enormous thud. Dust and debris billowed around them from the chasm. When the smoke cleared, the group stood in silence for a moment. Varian, Rapunzel, and Max were panting from the chase while Cass and Fidella stared into the empty canyon before them.

"See?" Cass dusted herself off like it was no big deal. "Told you I'd get you in and out without anyone knowing. Piece of cake."

"'Piece of cake?'" Rapunzel questioned, sounding almost offended. "Uh, did you see the seventy feet of 'our father is going to kill me' growing from my head?"

"Or the 'he's going to make sure I never see the light of day again' coming from my hands?" Varian added, holding up his still-glowing fingers.

"… One problem at a time, please," Cass replied as they got moving again.

(A short time later)

As the sun rose, the trio rode back to the castle, Rapunzel's hair flowing behind them. Upon entering the city, they had to halt because numerous guards were roaming about, exceeding the number from the night patrols.

"We've got a problem," Cassandra peeked around the corner of a building as troops marched by. "Because of the coronation, they've doubled security at the gates today."

"Can't we just go back the way we came?" Varian whispered.

"We could try, but it'll be risky. Especially with…." She trailed off before nodding toward the princess.

"Oh, right. A guard would see her hair."

"And there's no other way in?" Rapunzel asked anxiously.

"Sure, if you wanna walk through the door in broad daylight," Cass said sarcastically. Rapunzel clutched her hair as she looked around before her eyes landed on one of the castle towers.

"Hm, maybe we don't need the front door…." she said thoughtfully, getting an idea.

With a plan in place, Maximus went inside. He slinked low to the ground before hiding around the corner from the princess's room. Gathering himself, Max strode toward Stan and Pete like any other day. The guards glanced at each other as the guard horse stared them down. Seeing the cravat Stan was wearing, Max huffed at him with a disapproving grunt. The guard merely smiled sheepishly, rubbing the article.

"I told him it wasn't protocol, sir," Pete commented. Knowing he had more important things to worry about, Maximus nodded toward the hall to dismiss them. They saluted him before leaving, Stan looking chastised as the horse watched them go. Once they were gone, Max opened the door and hurried inside, shutting it behind him.

Pascal woke up at the sound of the door opening, looking confused when he saw Max come in. Before he could squeak a question, Max noticed the end of Rapunzel's hair tossed through the open balcony window. The horse ran to the window and tugged on the hair to help them up while Pascal watched in bewilderment. Cass jumped through the window beside the horse, with Varian following soon after as he climbed over the bay seat. Rapunzel brought up the rear, panting from the climb or rising panic. Pascal made a shocked sound when he saw that his friend had her old hair back.

"Okay, quick, hand me the scissors!" Rapunzel said anxiously, pointing to a pair on the table behind them.

Cass picked them up, smirking a little. "So, what do we wanna do here? Maybe a bob? How 'bout some layers?"

"Just cut it!" Rapunzel cried urgently as she turned around. Cassandra gripped some of her hair and snipped it… Only for the scissors to shatter when they closed on the locks, making Pascal squeak in alarm.

"Uh oh," she said as Varian's eyes widened in shock.

"'Uh-oh?' Why 'uh-oh?' There shouldn't be any 'uh-ohs!'" Rapunzel said frantically, turning around. Cassandra simply showed her the broken scissors. "Uh-oh."

"Was your hair always this strong?" Cass asked, setting the busted shears aside.

"What? No! Try again!" Rapunzel urged. Cass pulled out her dagger to try to cut her hair again, but all she got for her troubles was a dented knife. "We're gonna need a Plan B…"

Cassandra opened a compartment on Max's saddlebag filled with sharp, bladed objects. She picked up a cleaver before turning to the siblings. "Right, Rapunzel, cover your eyes. Varian, step back."

Rapunzel covered her eyes as she knelt beside a low table with her hair draped over it. Varian inched back, watching the scene unfold anxiously. Holding the blade high, Cassandra stepped forward before slamming it down. However, like the scissors, the cleaver shattered into pieces. The next weapon she tried, a mace, broke off its handle. Cass then took a running start with a two-handed axe and ended up with the same results. Even the tiny hand axe did nothing as she tried to chop at the hair, letting out a frustrated groan. Feeling desperate, Cass pulled out the big guns and grabbed a giant axe. Getting it into an upright position, she let the weapon fall, but all it did was break the table, with Rapunzel's hair still intact beneath the blade.

"Forget it!" She gave up, examining her hair. "It's just like those stupid rocks! It's unbreakable!"

"We can't forget it!" Rapunzel argued, climbing over the table. "Today is our coronation!"

"She can't go out looking like that!" Varian gestured to his sister. They heard knocking at the door, causing them all to freeze.

"Hey, Sunshine, you awake?" Eugene asked from outside, leaning toward the door (Quirin left him something for the hangover). "The guards left, and I thought I heard voices…." Ruddiger was with him, too, sitting on his neck. He had gotten worried about Varian when he didn't show up at sunrise and went out looking for him when he heard Max dismiss the guards.

The group inside glanced at the dummy still lying in Rapunzel's bed. Varian darted over and grabbed it, stuffing it behind the partition and putting the snoring machine inside a drawer. Rapunzel moved to open the door when Cass grabbed her arm. "You can't let Eugene see you."

"What? Why?" she asked in confusion.

"What's the problem?" Varian added when he came back over.

"He can't know anything about last night! I told you two!" She explained desperately. "If it gets out that I took you both outside Corona, I'm done for!"

"But we trust Eugene," Rapunzel said, placing a lock behind her ear as she and Varian glanced at each other.

"Well, I don't! My dad will have me taken off royalty detail. We'll never see each other again." Cass said pleadingly.

"Rapunzel?" Eugene called. The siblings frowned a little, looking from the door to Cass. She was practically begging them, and Varian knew Cassandra. She didn't beg—ever. Understanding, the step-siblings nodded in agreement, receiving a grateful smile from Cass. The handmaiden then started gathering the princess's hair. Varian pulled on his gloves, concealing the glow of his hands before helping her.

"Hey, are you okay in there? I can hear you, you know!" Rapunzel moved to help them but forgot her hair was still stuck under the ax. She was pulled to the ground with a yelp, immediately alerting Eugene and Ruddiger. "Rapunzel!" Eugene gasped, along with the raccoon.

They tried to hide Rapunzel's hair wherever they could think of. Cass pushed some hair into the armoire while the Princess stuffed some under the bed. "Rapunzel!"

Varian tossed some locks onto the bookshelf before looking around for more hair to hide. "Rapunzel!" Max dragged a carpet over a pile of hair in the center of the room as Cass ran past him with another bundle.

"Stand back!" Having had enough, Eugene kicked the door open and ran inside. "Are you okay– holy hair!" He skidded to a stop, looking in shock at the state of the room.

The other four froze in alarm, all holding strands of Rapunzel's hair while Max dropped his. Eugene was stunned while Ruddiger seemed happy, their eyes following the length of her hair around the room to various hiding places. The desk, in a horn, even disguising some as a plant hanger. They turned to the princess, who chuckled sheepishly.

"Surprise…"

After ensuring Eugene was alright, Rapunzel guided him to sit in one of the armchairs as Varian came over. "Hoo! Whoo, mama! Ha! Okay, okay… This is new. I mean, no, not new, right? Because we've seen this. Obviously, that whole magic thing is involved again. It was magic, right? Actually, you know what? You don't need to tell me. I'm just gonna say your hair magically grew back, and I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess Varian's moon powers are back, too." Eugene spoke animatedly, getting up, sitting back down, walking around, changing seats, etc., while Rapunzel and Varian watched him silently. "I'm not gonna ask how. Obviously, you don't wanna tell me, or else you wouldn't have tried to hide it from me. So, I won't ask how it grew back or how you got your moon powers back, but please tell me, how did they come back? Don't answer that. The important thing is that you're both okay. You're both okay, right? Because as long as you're both okay, I don't care what happened. I mean, I care! Obviously, I care, but I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation– Where is the war?!" Eugene cut off mid-rant when he saw Cassandra's outfit (who had been calmly collecting hair while this was happening) before turning back to the step-siblings with a forced smile. "That you'll share it when you're ready."

"Thank you for understanding," Rapunzel smiled softly, not getting the hint.

"Oh, come on, really?! I thought we trusted each other, Rapunzel?!" Eugene burst out, causing Rapunzel to cringe.

"We do!" she exclaimed. "I do, it's just…."

"Fine, fine, fine. You know what? I can't make either of you tell me what happened, but obviously, you're keeping something from me. But whatever it is," he placed his hands on Rapunzel's shoulders. "I–I just want you to know you should never feel like you have to hide anything from me."

The princess and Varian smiled softly at him. The animals looked on fondly while Cass rolled her eyes.

"You don't hide things from the people you love… ever." Eugene smiled at her.

"Rapunzel, honey?" they heard Queen Arianna call from outside.

"Hide your hair, woman! You gotta hide your hair!" Eugene told her without a second thought.

"Rapunzel?" The queen started to open the door when Pascal and Ruddiger acted quickly, slamming it shut. "May I come in, sweetheart?" She jiggled the doorknob as she tried to come in while the two pets pressed their backs against it. Max's tail fell on Pascal's head as he came over to help them.

"You can't! I'm… brushing my teeth!" Rapunzel disguised her voice as if that were what she was doing.

"Oh, good, but I can still come in, can't I?"

"Believe me, Mom, you do not want to. Morning breath," Rapunzel chuckled nervously, causing Varian to smack his forehead. "Wouldn't wanna expose you to that." She gave the others a thumbs-up, to which Cass and Eugene shook their heads in response.

"That's, um, very thoughtful of you," Arianna responded, confused, before getting back on track. "Uh, Dad and I want you and Varian to join us on the terrace for breakfast."

"Um… I don't know. There's a lot of stuff I have to do to get ready," Rapunzel winced, holding some of her hair. "And I think Varian has some stuff to do, too."

"Rapunzel, well…" The Queen started before sighing. "Your father has something very important to share with the both of you. He's… he's been waiting all night."

The step-siblings glanced at each other, feeling guilty about hiding this from their parents. "Yeah, sure, um… I will meet you there in a minute? And I'll let Varian know," Rapunzel responded. Arianna felt unsure, sensing something was up, but she respected her daughter's word and left for breakfast. Once she was gone, Rapunzel started panicking again. "The coronation is in two hours! How am I supposed to cut this hair?!"

"If we could just find a way to hide this…," Varian murmured as he ran a hand through his hair. The prince looked at Rapunzel's golden locks before his gaze fell on Pascal and the horse's tail on his head. "I have an idea." He smirked a little, getting the others' attention.

(Down at the terrace)

"Rapunzel… what is this?" Quirin asked as they joined their parents on the terrace.

The plan was to say that Rapunzel's golden locks were part of a wig meant to resemble her old hair. It was in a simple braid, similar to the one she had when she first came to the city. (Varian also took a detour to his room to change into his prince attire.) "It's a wig that I had Varian make for me," Rapunzel said, playing with a strand by her ear. "I… thought people didn't recognize me properly with short, brown hair. Plus, my old hair was such a big part of my story…."

"Oh… it's a wig." Quirin looked relieved. "It's… very realistic."

"Thank you," Varian said with a pleased smile, keeping up the act.

"It's certainly better quality than the Duchess of Quintonia's," Arianna smiled before changing the subject. "So, Rapunzel, Varian, ready for the big day?"

"You bet! Already into the princess spirit!" She smiled cheerfully. "So, Dad, Mom said you wanted to talk?"

"Yes, um," Quirin glanced at his wife as she sipped her tea. "Rapunzel, Varian, last night, your mother and I had a discussion…" He sighed heavily as he got up, walking to the pavilion's edge. "I know I'm not always able to separate the man from the king, and separating the father from the king has proven even more difficult."

He looked at the kids, sighing again when he saw them playing with their food and wearing sad expressions. "Sweethearts, I know this life is hard to get used to…, and I'm sure you sometimes wish I would just get out of your hair–"

Rapunzel choked a little on her food, startling Varian when she coughed. "Sorry. It's a little, um, dry out here. Anyone else dry?"

"Rapunzel…" Quirin took Rapunzel's hands, bending down on one knee before her. "You're going to be queen someday, and Varian, you will be crown prince, maybe even king yourself…." He smiled at his son as Varian beamed back at him. "You're both going to be great rulers with a magnificent kingdom," he said before frowning thoughtfully. "But you know better than anyone else what a dangerous and evil place the world can be…"

During this conversation, events unfolded in town. A shopkeeper was polishing a vase from his cart. Upon inspecting it, he noticed the reflection of a criminal behind him. When he turned around, the other man unexpectedly seized him.

"And the barrier keeping us safe from that is sometimes more fragile than it appears."

Another thug appeared, tipping the cart of glass over. The duo was quickly surrounded by guards and surrendered a little too easily.

"When that evil appears, it's my job to protect Corona from it."

Several people ran out of the bank in terror, turning around as more criminals exited with sacks full of loot.

"And, one day, that will be your responsibility."

Two guards soon appeared and took them away, too.

"And I must teach you two how to carry them."

Once again, the thieves gave up quickly, which was a bit strange…

"But that is many years away."

A rock was thrown through a jewelry shop window before Pocket stole a giant diamond on display.

"Until it's your time to carry that burden, I'm asking that you both trust that I know how to keep danger as far away from you and this kingdom as humanly possible."

Pocket dropped the diamond and raised his hands when Maximus arrived to confront him. He maintained his smirk as he and the other criminals were escorted away.

"Do you understand?" Quirin glanced to the side. "It wasn't until last night that I realized my methods have often come off as strict or unfair or…."

"Does this mean we can have more time to ourselves without having half the Royal Guard over our shoulders?" Rapunzel interrupted, frowning a little.

"Please, Dad," Varian murmured.

"This means I'm willing to negotiate," he clarified. "But I make no promises."

"We can work with that," Rapunzel smiled softly. She leaned in to kiss his cheek while Varian got up to hug him. "Well, I should go," the princess said as she started to walk away. "I have a lot of princess-ing up to do!"

"And I promised I'd help her," Varian said, following his stepsister. "See you two at the big moment."

Quirin stared after them, murmuring, "Why do I feel we're missing something?" Queen Arianna simply watched their children leave, unsure what to tell him.

(Elsewhere)

The door to the fitting room opened as Eugene poked his head in. "How are ya?"

Cass gave him an annoyed look before ignoring him to focus on her sewing. She needed to put the finishing touches on Rapunzel's coronation gown.

While Eugene was trying to act like this morning hadn't bothered him, the feeling that something was up nagged at him. He needed to know how Rapunzel and Varian got their powers back, and he knew Cass was the reason they were hiding whatever had happened from him. Eugene entered the room, whistling as he caught Pascal's attention from where he was napping next to Cass. The ex-thief started messing with a vase of flowers while subtly watching Cass as she ignored him.

"Oh, come on!" he exclaimed when he couldn't take it anymore. "What is going on with Rapunzel and Varian?! I mean, is it something I did?"

"Probably," Cass shrugged.

"And since when did Rapunzel start keeping secrets from me?!"

"Hey, Fitzherbert, I need to get this done before the coronation," she said, not caring. "So, do you mind throwing your pity party someplace else?"

"Look, Cassandra, I know you don't like me for Rapunzel," Eugene started, crossing his arms.

Cass scoffed at his words as she dropped the sleeve. "That's not true." She shook her head before smirking. "I don't like you for anyone."

"I just want what's best for her!" Eugene went on. "And Varian!"

"You don't say," Cassandra replied sarcastically before getting up.

"Of course!" Eugene insisted as she walked to the door. "I want Rapunzel to feel safe. I want her to be taken care of, and I want her to be happy here. And I want Varian to feel the same. He's already like a little brother to me, and I don't want to see him hurt again."

"Funny. You seem to have a pretty good handle on the things you want," Cassandra said coldly before leaving, shutting the door behind her. Eugene slowly sat down in the chair, feeling guilty. He knew what he wanted, but it sounded like Rapunzel… didn't want the same thing. He looked at Pascal on the pillow next to him, who just gave him a look.

"Oh, don't you start," Eugene glared at him a little.

Suddenly, they heard the doorknob rattling. Looking up, they saw Ruddiger manage to open it before barreling toward the ex-thief. "Whoa, whoa, easy, Kitty," Eugene said, trying to calm the raccoon down. "What's wrong? Where's Varian?"

Ruddiger chattered anxiously, darting between Eugene and the door, urging him to follow. Realizing the urgency, Eugene sprang to his feet as Pascal settled on his shoulder. The former thief dashed after the raccoon, sensing something was amiss with Varian if his pet was seeking him out.

Eugene followed the raccoon outside to the gardens, where Ruddiger led him to an out-of-the-way spot he hadn't seen before. As he got closer, the former thief started hearing wheezing breaths, telling Eugene he had found what he needed to find.

Or rather, who.

When he arrived, Varian was dry-heaving and gripping his stomach, seated on a stone bench. His face glistened with sweat, and tears streamed down his cheeks. Despite the surprising calm he had displayed earlier, he appeared utterly disheveled.

"Varian?" he called, trying not to startle the prince. Even so, Varian was so on edge that Eugene spooked him anyway. "Oh, Varian, hey…."

He sat on the bench next to Varian, waiting for the prince to gather himself. He refrained from hugging him, knowing a few things about handling panic attacks from his orphanage days.

"I'm–" Varian stammered. "I'm sorry, I'm fine. I just need a minute."

"Take your time," Eugene soothed.

Ruddiger hopped up on the other side of the prince while Pascal squeaked in concern. The lizard had never seen Varian like this, so it was somewhat alarming.

"I can do this," he murmured as if to convince himself of something. "I can… I can…" His voice broke before he looked up at Eugene with the most defeated expression he'd ever seen. "I can't do this…."

"Can't do what, Hairstripe?" Eugene asked gently.

"This!" Varian responded, gesturing to his prince clothes. "I… I don't wanna do this again." Varian started sobbing, leaning into Eugene as the older man wrapped him in a hug. Pascal looked ready to cry himself while Ruddiger climbed back onto Varian's shoulders, trying to comfort his friend.

"I finally have a life again. I can be around people. I can hug my dad without being afraid of hurting him," the alchemist got out between sobs. "I don't wanna be alone again. I don't wanna miss out on life again and pretend I'm fine with that."

Eugene started feeling guiltier than before as Varian unloaded what was in his heart and head. He had just told Cass that Varian was like a little brother to him. How could he not have known what was going on with him? Was Rapunzel feeling something like this, too?

"I'm just…," Varian sniffled. "I'm just tired of being afraid. I don't want to be scared anymore."

"… And you don't have to be," Eugene responded after a minute.

"Hm?" The teen glanced up at him.

"Varian," Eugene pulled away so they could look each other in the eye. "Anyone who knows you knows you're not this evil prince who would kill anyone with a wave of his hand. They know you're a smart and compassionate person who would do anything for the people he cares about. He gets excited over meeting a guy he thought was the hero in his favorite book and stands up for his family when anyone insults him. And he doesn't need his powers to do that last one. His words alone pack enough heat even when they're meant to be cold."

Varian snorted a laugh through his drying tears, remembering the moments he was talking about. "We know you're a good person, Varian, and you would never hurt us. Do you trust us to believe we're right?"

Varian stared at Eugene, watery blue eyes looking into soulful brown eyes. Eugene could see the words running around in his head, having the same look he would get when thinking over a problem for an answer. After a minute, Varian smiled softly. "I do."

Ruddiger nuzzled his face as Eugene and Pascal smiled at the young prince. Varian rubbed his eyes, taking deep breaths to ground himself again. "Thanks, Eugene."

"You gonna be okay?"

"I… I don't know." Varian sighed, looking at the castle before looking down.

"And that's okay. It's okay not to be okay," Eugene assured him as the prince looked at him. "I know a lot of things are gonna be different after a couple of hours, but I can promise you one thing: you won't be alone. Whatever comes next and whatever you decide to do, we'll be right there with you."

Varian smiled at him before hugging the older man one more time. "Feeling better?" Eugene asked.

"The short-term answer is yes," Varian answered honestly as he pulled back. "As for the long-term… I have no idea."

"Think you'll be able to handle the coronation?"

Varian thought about his answer before nodding. "Yeah… I think I'll make it."

"Good to hear," Eugene nodded. "And Varian… I'm sorry about last night. I didn't mean to embarrass you, Rapunzel, or your parents like that."

"It's okay, Eugene," Varian accepted his apology.

"It's just… the life I came from; you had to put your needs ahead of others. You couldn't worry about other people's feelings if you wanted to… stay alive, much less get ahead." The former thief explained before sighing. "I guess I have a few things to learn about thinking of others and how my decisions affect them."

"Maybe… we could learn together," Varian said after a minute. "Maybe I can learn not to be as afraid and guarded as before."

"And I guess I can learn to think about others' feelings." Eugene conceded, smiling at the prince as the younger male smiled back. "Now, as much as I love hanging out with you, Hairstripe, I know you still have to get ready for the coronation."

"You're right," Varian nodded, standing up. "And I promised Rapunzel I'd help her with her hair."

"See ya at the big moment, kid," Eugene smiled as Varian returned to the castle. "I'll be in the front row."

As the boys parted ways, neither they nor the pets saw the large shadow of a person watching them from a few yards away.

(With Rapunzel)

Rapunzel was sitting on her bed when Varian came in.

"Hey."

"There you are," she smiled as her brother joined her. "I was wondering where you were."

"I just needed a minute," Varian answered.

"So, how are we going to do this?" Rapunzel asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Well, having it in a braid is a good place to start," he turned her around to see what they were working with. "You wanna keep it regular or make it fancy?"

"Fancy?" She asked curiously.

"It'd start up here…" He tapped the back of her head near the top before pausing. "Actually, we might wanna wait for Cass to get here. We're gonna need more hands for this."

"Okay." Rapunzel was quiet for a minute before hesitantly asking, "Hey, Vari? While I was… gone, did you ever use your moon powers like last night?"

"No," he shook his head. "Never… I mean, the scientist in me wanted to experiment with my powers to see exactly what I could do, but I tried to avoid using them because of what they could do to everyone around me…." Varian's eyes turned downcast as he thought about last night.

Maybe he should have practiced with his powers before. He could've stopped the rocks before they reached the bridge. Then Rapunzel and Cass wouldn't have been put in danger.

"Hey, it's okay," Rapunzel whispered when she saw his guilty expression, turning around to pull him into a hug. "You couldn't control it. Neither could I when it came to getting my hair back." They pulled apart, and she tilted Varian's chin up so they could look each other in the eye. "I don't know how or why last night happened, but we will figure it out. Together. And no matter what, you will always be my brother."

Varian smiled a little at her. "Thanks, Sis."

Rapunzel returned the smile before sitting back. "So… despite having known you for six months, I don't know much about you. I know you like inventing and… alchemy, was it?"

"Yeah," Varian nodded. "It's a complex kind of science that involves changing something into something else. A known goal of an alchemist is turning lead into gold."

"Really?" Rapunzel gasped a little.

"Mhm!" Varian nodded before motioning for her to wait here. He ran out of the room and returned a few minutes later with a notebook.

"Now, I can't turn lead into gold–yet," he added quietly, causing Rapunzel to giggle. "But I have made other stuff." Sitting beside her, Varian flipped through his notes, showing his sister a bunch of formulas and blueprints. While she couldn't understand most of it, Rapunzel could tell he put a lot of time and effort into it.

"Wow!" she murmured in awe. "These are amazing!"

"You think so?" Varian rubbed his neck sheepishly.

"Yeah!" Rapunzel smiled at him. "What do you do when you're not doing alchemy?"

"I read… a lot. Sometimes, I draw just for fun. I can play the piano and a few other instruments. When I do go outside, I go horseback riding. I explore the woods and caves, mostly when I need to find ingredients for my alchemy. I even do some archery."

"Awesome!" His step-sister gasped, looking at him with interest.

Varian chuckled awkwardly at her stare, blushing slightly. "I still can't believe I'm telling someone about this. Most people don't even like to get to know me outside the castle."

"Well, you've got someone now," Rapunzel said, taking his hand in hers. "And she'd like to know everything about you and more." Varian smiled appreciatively at her before they heard a knock on the door. They turned just as their mother poked her head in.

"Hi, sweethearts," Queen Arianna smiled.

"Oh! Hi, Mom!" Rapunzel waved.

"Hey, Mom." Varian set his notes aside.

Arianna came in and closed the door behind her, holding two boxes. "Sorry to interrupt your bonding time, but you both left so quickly after breakfast I… I didn't have a chance to give these to you." She walked over and sat next to the step-siblings. "I know it's a little early for coronation gifts, but I thought you might like to see them now."

The queen gave each sibling a box. Though the boxes looked similar, one had gold trim with a sun, while the other had silver trim with a moon. Inside, they found two stacked books: one old and worn, the other new underneath. The siblings smiled at their mother, lifting the top books and opening them to random pages.

"'Eighteenth of July, we embarked on a safari to the most remote plains of the third continent.'" Rapunzel read first while Varian flipped to another page with the Queen's handwriting and pressed flowers between the pages.

"'Twenty-first of May, had to take shelter in a hidden cave to escape the fury of a violent storm.'"

"'Twelfth of April, helped villagers rebuild their war-torn homes.' Mom," Rapunzel smiled at her in surprise. "Is this yours? Did you actually do all of this?"

"You've really had all these adventures?" Varian asked.

"Kids, before I met either of your fathers… I was so much like you two." Queen Arianna smiled a bit at the memories. "I had no idea what I was supposed to do in this world…" She reached into the boxes to pick up the newer-looking books. "So, I went out and found my own way." The siblings set the other books down to take them from her. They eagerly opened the books but found the pages were empty. "Your father is right about one thing." Queen Arianna went on as they looked up at her curiously. "You will be queen and crown prince someday. But only you two get to decide what kind of queen and crown prince you'll be. And no one can tell you the best way to make that decision."

"But how can we if–" Rapunzel started, then stopped short, staring at her mother. "Wait. Are you suggesting that we should–?"

"Sweethearts, find a way to fill those pages," Queen Arianna interrupted Rapunzel, smiling. "I only ask that you both be safe, be smart, and, above all, be true to yourselves. Also, protect each other and let your bond grow stronger."

They smiled softly at her before turning back to the inside covers. They saw the same words in black:

Plus es en vous

Love, Mother

"Plus est en vous?" Rapunzel said awkwardly, mispronouncing the phrase, causing Varian to giggle a little at her.

"Plus est en vous." Their mother corrected her pronunciation with a smile. "It means 'there is more in you.'"

The two royals smiled brightly, engulfing their mother in a gentle group hug.

"Thanks, Mom," Varian whispered gratefully. All his life, no one had ever told him that. He didn't realize how much he needed those words until that moment.

(A short time later)

The coronation of the Prince and Princess of Corona had finally come. Commoners gathered outside, waiting for the ceremony to conclude. All the guests were in the throne room, with the King and Queen standing beside their thrones and the Sun Priest positioned between them. He placed Rapunzel and Varian's crowns on a velvet cushion before him, prepared to present them to the new heirs.

By the side entrance outside the throne room, Cassandra was putting some final touches on Rapunzel's appearance before the big event, with Varian offering input. Rapunzel's hair was still in the same braid as before but with white beaded hairbands complementing her coronation dress. That was all they had time to do, given the timeframe they had to prepare. "That would've gone a lot faster with the other girls helping," Cass said, checking her hair and ensuring the bands held. "But they're such gossips half the Kingdom would know about your hair by now. I couldn't take the risk of them finding out."

"Are you sure they'll believe it's a wig?" Rapunzel asked nervously before Cass adjusted the high collar on her dress.

"Our parents believe it, so everyone else will believe it," Varian assured her. He was dressed in his coronation suit, his hair only pinned back this time since they didn't have time to mess with any gel.

"Are you sure you two can pull this off?" the older woman asked.

Rapunzel and Varian exchanged uncertain glances before approaching the door. As they cracked it open, they glanced into the throne room, spotting their parents and the officiant in place. After a final look at their father, they shut the door and faced their friend.

"We have to, Cassandra," Rapunzel answered.

"Just be careful you don't trip on this," Cassandra said as she knelt to adjust the end of Rapunzel's dress.

"It's not the dress I'm worried about," Rapunzel said, pointing down. Cassandra pulled up the skirt to see Rapunzel struggling in the pink shoes that went with the ensemble. "How do people walk in these things? Whoa!"

Cass stood up, taking a deep breath. "Just relax," She reassuringly patted the princess's shoulders. "This is going to be fine."

"Take your time walking down the aisle," Varian smiled at his sister. "I'll stay with you if you start to have trouble."

Rapunzel smiled a little, feeling reassured by their words.

The prince then looked at his gloved hands, frowning slightly. "I just have to hope my powers don't act up."

"It'll be okay," his sister said, taking his hands in hers. "We'll get through this." Varian said nothing but gave her a slight smile as a 'thank you.'

(In the dungeons)

"I can't wait any longer." The thug with the skull mask shook his head impatiently. The ruffians arrested that morning had all been shoved into a holding cell to be dealt with later, and they'd been sitting there for hours.

"This better work, Pocket," Otter said in an annoyed tone.

"Don't you worry, boys," Pocket assured them with a smirk. "Lady Caine will not disappoint."

(Back at the throne room)

Cassandra and the royal siblings stood before the throne room doors. The lady-in-waiting nodded to them with an encouraging smile. The step-siblings inhaled deeply and let it out. It was the moment of truth.

"Okay," Rapunzel said as they both returned the nod. The guards opened the doors for them, and Cassandra moved to the side so they could walk in. Trumpets played to announce the siblings' entry, and Rapunzel gasped softly as she stared ahead of them. Practically everyone from all the kingdoms was there. Their parents were at the end of the room, waiting patiently.

Eugene looked behind him with everyone else and smiled in awe at the sight of his girlfriend and her brother. "Wow..."

They were the picture of grace and finesse, with the sun shining on Rapunzel's pink-and-white dress and Varian's dark tailsuit. The light behind them made Rapunzel's dress look radiant and caused the dark colors in Varian's suit to stand out. Together, they were the perfect blend of light and shadow.

The sun and the moon.

Together.

Glancing around at everyone, Rapunzel and Varian raised their heads dignifiedly as they began to walk down the aisle. However, Rapunzel started struggling to keep her balance a few steps in. She cringed a little as she paused to avoid stumbling.

Varian also stopped, staying close to his sister as he had promised.

"How embarrassing for her," The Duchess of Quintonia stage whispered next to Eugene. "This is going to take forever…" She then silently left the crowd undetected since everyone's attention was on the step-siblings. Varian held out his arm like he was asking to escort a lady. Rapunzel looped her arm with his, regaining her balance as they walked again, sharing a grateful smile with her brother.

(Meanwhile)

The Duchess was walking down an empty hallway, looking behind her to ensure she wasn't being followed. She waved her fan before pulling it out flat to reveal a map drawn inside it.

At the entrance to the dungeons, two guards stood on either side of the door. "Hello? Can anyone help me?" They looked up to see the Duchess walking toward them, glancing around helplessly. "Silly me, I must've taken a wrong turn somewhere."

The guards shared a glance before one of them stepped forward with a smile. "I'd be glad to help you, madam."

"Oh, you're too kind!" The Duchess suddenly slammed into him, knocking him out before flipping over him to knock the other guard back with a sharp kick. The man slammed into the wall, sending a key rattling on a hook as he hit the ground with a groan. The Duchess snapped her fan shut, knowing she had found what she sought.

Pocket and the other ruffians looked up when they heard the door open, seeing a woman in fancy clothes in front of their cell. "Hey, Madam Poppycock," Otter said as he approached the bars. "The party's upstairs."

He looked back at the others when his shirt collar was suddenly grabbed and roughly yanked, slamming his head into the bars. Pocket stood up with a smile. "Meet Lady Caine."

"Y–You're a lot stronger than you look," the "masked" man stammered awkwardly as she glowered at him before the woman shoved him away.

"I'm a lot of things," she responded as she removed her coiffure, revealing auburn hair with a red streak tied up in a bun, with one long strand next to the right side of her face. Using the key she stole from the guards to unlock the door, she smiled evilly as Pocket stepped out of the cell. "Let the show begin…"

Another guard arrived, aggressively pointing his halberd at them. "I'm gonna need you to step back into that cell, pronto." Lady Caine looked at him unimpressed before smirking as the other thugs came out behind her.

"That there is a nice suit," the "masked" man said, cracking his knuckles. The guard quickly realized he was outnumbered. Glancing down at his uniform, he dropped his weapon in fear.

(Back upstairs)

"The wearer of this crown is a shining example of the promise that is Corona…" The Sun Priest began as Rapunzel and Varian finally reached the front. Unhooking their arms, Quirin and Arianna looked at them with concern, but the siblings gave them reassuring smiles that everything was okay. "An ambassador of goodwill to those visiting from afar, and an inspiration to those fortunate enough to live within her borders."

The sibling duo turned around and gave Eugene a thumbs-up. The older man responded in kind as Cass walked down the aisle after them, Ruddiger riding on her shoulder. Pascal stepped out of her headdress, looking around before the pets noticed Pocket, disguised as a guard, sneaking in through the double doors.

"But above all, the chief responsibility of the Crown is to keep the people of Corona safe from dangers near and far." He then used a halberd to secure the door so it couldn't be opened from the outside.

Pascal alerted Cass with a squeak as he tapped her cheek with his tail. She glanced back before Ruddiger pointed in the opposite direction with his paw.

"And there are many."

Looking at the side entrance, they saw another thug in a guard uniform walking in. "This mandate is not to be taken lightly."

"Go find Max," Cass whispered to the pets. They squeaked in understanding before jumping off her shoulders as she reached the front.

"There will come a day when the walls that surround Corona are threatened by malfeasance." The priest continued as Cassandra got Eugene's attention with a look. She glanced at the fake guard, causing his mouth to open in alarm when he saw him. "A day–"

"Attention, please!" A woman's voice called out, drawing everyone's attention.

"Lady Caine?" Eugene breathed in realization. The thugs from the dungeon stormed the throne room. At the front was a red-haired woman in ruffian clothes, sporting a skull necklace and tattoos on her left arm. She drew her sword, causing the nobles to flee in fear as the pirates pursued them. Eugene and Cass scanned the room before running through the crowd, seeking safe spots to avoid being trampled. The guests rushed to exit, but Pocket blocked the front doors. The suspicious guards herded them back into the room, where pirates took several hostages and forced them to their knees before the thrones.

"Release our guests immediately!" Quirin demanded furiously as one of the "guards" positioned himself by the royal family.

"What's the matter, Quirin?" Lady Caine taunted as she approached them. "Am I ruining your little darlings' perfect day?"

"The Duchess?" Rapunzel raised a confused eyebrow.

"Oh, honey." The woman chuckled, smirking right in her face. "I am no duchess."

"I don't understand," the princess shook her head, still baffled.

"Rapunzel, she made it up," Varian explained, glaring at the pirate. "There is no Duchess of Quintonia."

"Oh, we've got a smart one here, don't we?" Lady Caine taunted before pointing her sword right at the Prince's neck. "And it's the same one who told me off before…."

Quirin lunged at the woman threatening his son, but Otter stepped in front of him. Arianna grabbed Quirin's arm to prevent him from taking any reckless actions that might endanger their children or the guests.

In a situation like this, most people would feel fear. However, Varian knew he was different.

He wasn't afraid.

He was furious.

No one saw his eyes flash blue for just a moment as his glare intensified. Yet, Varian sensed the Moonstone sliver within him awaken, pounding against its confines like a wild creature eager for release. It demanded retaliation against the threat to him and his family.

"But of course, I wouldn't expect you to understand, Rapunzel," Lady Caine continued, losing interest in Varian as she stepped closer to Rapunzel, making Cass and Eugene glare at the woman. "But try to follow along," she leaned close to her ear before her tone darkened. "This… is all your fault!"

"What?!" Rapunzel cried, taken aback.

"What are you talking about?!" Varian demanded.

"You see, after your untimely disappearance," Lady Caine rolled her eyes at the word as she walked over to Quirin. "Your birth father, King Frederic, locked up every criminal in the Kingdom," she flicked his Corona sun necklace before returning to the step-siblings. "Including a simple petty thief… my father." Caine walked away from Rapunzel and Varian as they stared after her, the rogue's voice wavering as she continued her story. "I saw him thrown into a cage and hauled off like some animal, never to be seen again!" She clenched her fist in heartache before sighing. "So, I thought I'd come back and return the favor." She smirked, pointing her weapon at them. They turned to one of the side entrances as a cart with banners for apple pie was wheeled in. The thug at the reins put on the brake, and the signs fell away, revealing that it was a stolen prison cart.

"Load 'em up, boys!" Lady Caine commanded, gesturing aggressively with her blade. Without any way to fight back, the nobles were forced to walk into the prison cart one by one.

"Your turn, Your Majesty," Lady Caine called out teasingly. Rapunzel cringed while Varian gritted his teeth in outrage. Their father moved his hands in front of them protectively as their mother stepped closer. "Oh, come now," Lady Caine rolled her eyes, smirking slyly as two of her men approached them. "You didn't think we'd leave our prized pig in the pen, did you?"

The two thugs grabbed their father by the arms and led him to the cart. "Dad?" Rapunzel reached for him.

"Kids, stay back!" Quirin warned them as he was placed with the captured nobles.

"But Dad–" Varian started to say.

"I'll be fine." Their father cut him off, trying to be reassuring but firm. "My only concern is you two. Stay where you are. That's an order, as your father and your king." The cart door slammed shut and locked as the step-siblings looked on in horror.

Eugene moved forward to intervene but stopped short when one of the thugs brandished a sword in his face. He jumped back slightly, holding up his hands in surprise.

"Don't be a hero, pretty boy," Otter said mockingly as Pocket smirked.

He looked at the royal siblings, surprised when they nodded at him. He then glanced at Cass, who looked back at the other two. They both glanced at each other before taking a deep breath, knowing what to do. They just hoped their father wouldn't be angry with them later…

"Sorry, Dad…" Rapunzel said, reaching for the beads that held her braid together while kicking off her shoes. At the same time, Varian pulled off his gloves before going for his clip. "We can't stay put."

"Kids?" Quirin murmured as Rapunzel's blond hair piled on the floor around her. Varian shook out his bangs as they came loose, then clenched his fists tightly as his hands started to glow. The step-siblings stood bravely between the thrones, stepping forward as everyone stared in awe.

Eugene smirked at Rapunzel proudly. "That's my girl."

"Let. Them. Go!" Rapunzel demanded.

"And that's not a request, Caine," Varian hissed as they walked past their shocked mother… who smiled proudly. Despite the revelation, none of the pirates looked weary, although the ones closer to the prince shifted back a little. For once, the dark rumors about him worked to Varian's advantage.

Lady Caine laughed at them. "Nice wig, Princess." She then climbed onto the cart, riding on the outside. "Come on! Let's move out!" She waved for them to pull out as the cart started moving, but Rapunzel picked up her hair and swung it forward. When it latched around the door's handle, the Princess gave her locks a swift tug and broke the door clear off its hinges, forcing them to stop.

After that, Varian jumped in. He held out his left hand, his eyes turning solid blue as his fingers and hair stripe glowed the same color. Suddenly, two black rocks burst on either side of the door frame, forming an 'X' to keep the pirates from leaving. When he saw the black rocks, Quirin's eyes widened. He looked at Varian as his son lowered his hand, and the teen's narrowed eyes returned to normal as the glow faded.

With their cart stuck, Lady Caine growled as she jumped off. "Now, you're just making me angry."

"Good," Rapunzel said defiantly, preparing her hair for another strike. "'Cause we're just getting started."

"Everyone! Out of the cart!" Varian commanded, waving them forward. The captured nobles obeyed, knowing the moon prince wouldn't hurt them. Quirin led the way, helping some of the noblewomen as well.

"Get those people back here! Now!" Lady Caine demanded, her minions running forward.

"Rapunzel. Varian. I thought that was a wig?" Quirin questioned as the step-siblings ran up to him, calm despite the situation.

"I know," Rapunzel said as she gently pushed Dame Van Hoskins along. "We'll talk about it later."

"Take Mom and get out of here!" Varian ordered. "We'll handle this!"

"Kids, wait!" Quirin tried to stop them as they ran off to fight.

Varian paused, glancing back as he said, "You were always protecting me… Let me be the one to protect you."

"Varian…" Quirin's eyes widened, stunned as his son followed his stepsister.

"That's my cue," Eugene suddenly slammed Pocket and Otter's heads together, jumping over them as he took one of their swords.

"Well, my last day on princess duty; might as well go down fighting," Cass pulled off her headdress and grabbed a tall candlestick before charging into battle.

Varian looked around and saw a quiver of arrows on the floor. Smirking slightly, he kicked it into the air, letting it fall around his back. He then scooped up a discarded bow and raced to join the others in battle.

Four thugs cornered some nobles, the one with the skull mask spinning an axe threateningly. Suddenly, a golden rope snatched the weapon out of his hand, making him turn to see the princess glaring at him.

"Leave them alone!" As the nobles escaped, the pirate charged at her, only for her to sidestep and lasso him with her hair. After dropping him on the floor, she moved on to another opponent. Quirin was about to join the battle when Arianna touched his shoulder, silently telling him to let the kids handle it.

When they were back-to-back, Eugene asked Cass, "So, are you sure you can handle yourself?"

"Oh, I'll manage." She smirked before spinning her makeshift weapon around, knocking a criminal off his feet. She caught another thug's arm and tossed him to the floor. Eugene was also holding his own as he ducked under a sword strike and dodged a club by jumping onto a planter. Lady Caine growled as she saw her gang losing before joining the fight herself.

Meanwhile, there was a pounding on the door. Outside, the real guards had heard about the attack and were trying to get inside. "Get that door open, now!" the Captain ordered as he and Max watched six guards hit the door with a battering ram.

Back inside, Eugene kicked one thug behind him before jumping onto another's back. The former thief then casually walked down the pirate's back like a staircase to get off the planter. "Heads up!" He ducked as two more thugs went flying over his head. Cassandra smirked as she twirled her candlestick like a bo staff.

Rapunzel smiled at them before seeing two other guests in trouble. Noticing a railing above, she was about to lasso it when Varian ran past her. Having a similar idea, the prince pulled some vials from his pocket and fashioned them to two arrows. He then readied the arrows at the ceiling and fired. Hitting their mark, a small explosion broke the roof apart, with pieces landing on the two thugs' heads and knocking them out.

Meanwhile, Lady Caine casually approached Cass, who readied her 'weapon.' "Aw, cute," the pirate mocked before attacking. Cassandra dodged and backed away until the woman kicked her feet out from under her, knocking her down. The warrior handmaiden looked up at the pirate as she tossed her weapon aside before gritting her teeth and taking up her 'weapon' again. Lady Caine smirked before pulling out two war fans, spinning around threateningly as they battled again.

Rapunzel ran over when she saw another guest in trouble. Thinking fast, she used her hair to grab a post to get a lift. Off the ground, she ran along the wall, swinging around to kick the thugs away as the General looked up in shock. The pirates fell into the flowers as Rapunzel landed on the floor. As she started to walk away, she was suddenly pulled back by her hair. The skull-masked thug yanked on it, trying to pull her closer to him.

"Rapunzel!" Quirin murmured in worry.

Suddenly, the pirate was knocked away by a blast of blue light, causing Rapunzel to stumble slightly as her hair was released. Turning around, she found the attack had come from Varian, his left hand outstretched and glowing. The teen prince glared with determination and anger before blinking in confusion. He looked at his hand in growing shock, wondering if that had just happened.

"Whoa," Rapunzel chuckled at Varian, equally stunned. "Since when could you do that?"

"Since just now," Varian answered, an excited smirk forming. "What else can I do?"

Meanwhile, Eugene was sword-fighting with a larger thug until his sword was knocked out of his hand. He glanced at his opponent as the thug approached him, knowing he was in trouble. Prepared to fight with his fists, Rapunzel suddenly swung past him, placing a frying pan she had snatched off the prison cart in his hand.

"Thanks, Blondie!" he chirped before starting to fight back. Eugene blocked every attack with the pan as if he were sword-fighting until he found himself surrounded on three sides. Glancing around, he tossed the frying pan like a boomerang, knocking them all out in one throw before kicking the utensil back into his hand. "Ha ha! Now, this feels good!"

Cass was still battling it out with Lady Caine, blocking her fans with her candlestick. She was able to catch one in the capital before tossing it away. Glaring, Lady Caine rushed forward with a battle cry, using her remaining fan like a sword. While she had agility, Cass could still block her strikes before finally knocking Caine to the ground, losing her last fan. Unarmed but still willing to fight, Lady Caine made a desperate lunge at Cassandra. The handmaiden fell back and threw her off, causing the pirate to tumble across the floor. When Caine tried to reach for her dagger, Cass trapped her arm with the candlestick.

"Stay down!" she barked, panting from the fight.

Rapunzel jumped down from the rafters as Varian ran up beside her. "You have no idea who you're dealing with," Lady Caine spat at them.

"Believe me, I've dealt with much worse," Rapunzel glared at her.

"It's over," Varian narrowed his eyes, a hand still on the bowstring.

Lady Caine glared at them, slipping her arm free. She backflipped away from them as Eugene ran over to the group. "You think this is over? Ha!" Lady Caine scoffed angrily. "I promise you, I'll be back!" As she pulled the halberd out, a loud neigh was her only warning before the guards and Max rammed down the door, crushing her underneath with a pained groan. Max looked around with Pascal and Ruddiger, expecting a fight, not realizing it was over.

"Oh," Eugene tsked. "Lady Caine, it's impolite to leave in the middle of a party."

"You'd think you'd know that," Cass added slyly, making the step-siblings laugh. The four walked over to Max and the pets as the crowd of nobles started cheering for their bravery. They stood together proudly while Lady Caine was taken away by Pete, Max whinnying next to them.

Caine and the rest of the pirates were handcuffed together as the guards led them away. Given the mess they caused, the nobles decided they had enough excitement for one day and took their leave. "Nice to see you! Thanks for coming!" Eugene called out as they left. "Nice suit, buddy! Happy Coronation Day, folks!"

Arianna ran forward as Quirin stayed where he was, looking on with surprise. Her children looked at her sheepishly before the Queen hugged them both. Rapunzel and Varian returned the hug, smiling as they held tightly to their mother. Varian opened his eyes, his smile faltering when he saw their father watching from a distance. The emotions from the past few minutes hit the teen prince as he slipped out of his mother's hold. He ran to his father, surprising the older man as he threw his arms around his dad's chest, clinging to him as if he feared something else would happen if he let go.

Snapping out of his stupor, Quirin returned his son's hug, feeling the teen shake slightly. "It's okay, Son. I'm alright. I'm not going anywhere."

Varian rubbed the forming tears away as he pulled back, smiling at his dad. "I love you, Dad."

"I love you, too, Son." Quirin smiled slightly as father and son hugged again. The king glanced up and held out his arm as his stepdaughter ran toward them, pulling her into a hug. Queen Arianna smiled as she walked up to them, allowing Quirin and the kids to have their moment.

Still, Rapunzel frowned as they held their father. With the secret out, they knew he would want to talk to them about it.

(Later)

After everyone turned in that night, the step-siblings stood before their father in the trashed throne room. Quirin sat on his throne next to the crowns the two never wore.

"Alright, let me see if I understand this," he said after rubbing his temples. "You both snuck out last night, went beyond the walls of Corona, where you touched a mysterious rock that caused your hair and powers to return?"

"Yes," they both said, Rapunzel cringing slightly while Varian fiddled with his hands.

"And you acted alone?"

"Look, we know you're angry," Rapunzel began, stepping closer to her stepfather. "But can't you see? We're okay! We're more than okay, we–"

Quirin held up his hand, stopping her. He stood up, looking around the throne room. "Let's take this conversation to my office."

Rapunzel and Varian glanced at each other before following their father.

They entered the king's study, and after making sure no one was around, Quirin secured the door before walking over to stand in front of his desk, facing his children.

"What's going on?" Rapunzel asked.

"First, I'd like to… apologize," Quirin sighed, looking guilty. "I should've pushed back harder against the council when they wanted you crowned as soon as possible. I knew it was too soon, and the fact that you both felt like you needed to sneak out to have some space proves that."

"It's not your fault, Dad," Varian assured him, smiling sadly. "I know you've always had trouble with them."

"Even so, I should've put my foot down about the coronation. As your father, my job is to prepare you for life, not to force you into it kicking and screaming," Quirin continued, stepping closer to his children. "So, if you don't feel ready to take up the crown, I won't make you."

Rapunzel and Varian looked at each other before looking at the floor with conflicted expressions. "You can be honest with me about this. I'm sure I can find a way to use Lady Caine's attack as an argument to postpone the coronation."

After a few minutes of silence, Rapunzel took a deep breath before speaking. "Dad… I love you so much and Corona, too… but I don't feel ready to be a princess. There's so much I still have to learn about the world… and about myself."

"Me too. I'm not ready to be a prince despite training for years. I still need to figure some things out…" Varian glanced at his hands, his fingertips shimmering in the pale moonlight.

Quirin studied his son's expression carefully. Focusing on his eyes, he saw no fear as he watched his hands glow. There was a silent determination—a desire to take command of his situation. The king stepped forward, taking Varian's bare hands in his own, startling the teen prince into looking at him. Quirin smiled understandingly, knowing what was going through his son's head. "I understand," He nodded, looking from Varian to Rapunzel. "I'll try to spread out your lessons and duties so you can have more time to yourselves."

"Really?" Rapunzel asked, hope flickering in her eyes.

"Yes," Quirin nodded. "Also, if you plan to go into the city, you may go without an escort. However, if you want to go to the mainland, I ask that you at least take Cassandra or Eugene."

"We can work with that." Varian nodded.

The siblings shared another group hug with their father before they pulled apart, Quirin becoming severe again. "Now, there's a reason I moved this into the study instead of staying in the throne room. We need to discuss what happened last night. More specifically, what you both found."

The step-siblings knew what he was talking about—the rocks. "What are those rocks?" Rapunzel asked.

"… They're mine. I remember they would appear when I was younger if I got really upset or angry about something," the prince said softly before looking at his father. "Are they mine?"

"No, Son, you didn't cause this," Quirin assured him before turning to the window. "The Moonstone sent them."

"What?" the siblings gasped.

"Those rocks appeared at the Sundrop Monument not long after the Sundrop was taken. I've been watching them for some time, even before I married your mother," the king explained as he walked toward the window before turning back to his children. "But the fact that they came after you so violently has me very concerned."

"Why would the Moonstone send those rocks?"

"I don't know," Quirin shook his head. "But what I do know is that these rocks are very dangerous. Therefore, as your father, I am asking you to stay away from them from now on. Also, as your father and your king, I'm asking you not to mention these rocks to anyone else. We don't want to cause a panic. Do you understand?"

"Okay." The kids nodded, but it looked like their minds were elsewhere.

Quirin's expression became solemn as he approached his kids again. "Are you both sure you're all right?"

Rapunzel smiled at him, nodding. "There's a lot more to us than you think."

"I believe that. You're both your mother's children. Arianna and Ulla were determined and strong, and I see so much of their adventurous spirit in you," Quirin smiled slightly before frowning a little at the thought of his late wife. "It was that same spirit that took Ulla away from home…"

"And she never came back," Varian whispered, knowing this story.

Quirin sighed, taking Rapunzel's hand and placing his other hand on Varian's shoulder. "I know how much you want to go out and see what the world offers you. I had reservations about that before tonight, but I've also seen that you both can handle yourselves better than I thought." The step-siblings looked at their father silently, wondering where he was going with this conversation. "I just ask that you stay a little longer. The world will be yours soon," Quirin continued, smiling sadly. "Your mother and I just got you both back. We're not ready to let you go again."

Rapunzel and Varian smiled at their dad in understanding. As much as they wanted to be independent and see the world, they understood what Quirin was trying to say. Maybe they could hold off on any grand adventures for a bit longer…

Sighing, Rapunzel nodded. "Okay, Dad. I understand."

Varian hesitated for a minute before nodding as well. "Alright."

"Thank you," Quirin said gratefully as the family shared one more group hug. When they pulled back, Quirin's expression became stern. "Now, while I'm happy you're both safe and willing to give you more freedom, there's still the matter of both of you sneaking out and lying to me." The step-siblings cringed, glancing at each other as their father stared them down.

The man was quiet for a minute before speaking again. "One week," he held up a finger before pointing to each teen, respectively. "No alchemy. No horseback riding."

"Yes, sir," Varian groaned while Rapunzel nodded shamefully.

"As for Cassandra…" he continued, making the siblings tense as they looked at their father in horror. How did he know Cass was involved?! "I think a week doing the messier jobs for the Guard will do. Cleaning the stables, organizing the supply shed, and the like."

"You're… you're not going to send her away?" Varian stammered, stunned.

"No." Quirin shook his head.

"Please don't be mad at her," Rapunzel begged her stepfather. "She was just trying to help us feel better."

"I know, but she still took you beyond the walls of Corona, where a million and one things could've gone wrong even without the rocks being present." He reminded her sternly before softening a little. "However, I'm not going to send her away for trying to be a good friend to you both. I believe the punishment I put forward shall suffice."

The princess breathed a sigh of relief, thankful her dad was willing to be reasonable. "Thanks, Dad."

Quirin nodded with a smile. "Now, it's late, and we've all had a long day—a long weekend, in fact. I believe it's time we all head to bed."

"Right," Rapunzel nodded, giving her dad one last hug and kiss. "Good night, Dad."

"Good night, Rapunzel."

As the princess went to open the door, Varian looked at his father, an unasked question in his eyes. "Dad? If I said I wanted to–?"

Quirin held up his hand, stopping his son as he smiled knowingly. "I know. You want to learn to control your powers."

Varian was startled that his father already knew, but he nodded anyway. "I just… want to take back my life."

"I understand, and you have my blessing on the matter," Quirin agreed, retaking his son's hands. "Just promise me you won't overexert yourself and that you'll stay safe."

Varian smiled at him as he nodded again. "I promise." The alchemist hugged his dad again, Rapunzel smiling at them from the door. When they pulled apart, Quirin watched the teens leave for their rooms together. Once they were gone, Quirin's smile faded to a frown as he looked out the window. He stepped toward the glass, touching the pane as he gazed at the moon outside.

"Please," he begged silently. "Let us have more time."

(With Varian)

Varian had changed into casual clothes since he wasn't ready to sleep yet. He was too wound up from the past few days. Just as he was finishing, someone knocked on his door.

"Come in."

Queen Arianna opened the door. "Hi, honey."

"Oh, hi, Mom," Varian smiled as he sat on his bed. "Something up?"

"I just wanted to see how you were doing," she joined him. "I saw Eugene heading to Rapunzel's room, so I figured I'd take your room."

Varian chuckled a little before frowning, looking at the floor. "I'm sorry for lying to you. I just didn't want to worry you."

"It's okay, sweetie," Arianna assured him, pulling her stepson into a hug. "Everything's going to be fine."

They were quiet for a few minutes as Varian let his mother hold him. He pulled back with another sigh as he looked out the window.

"Varian?" she questioned, knowing something was on his mind.

"Mom, I wish I had my own friends," he murmured. "I love Rapunzel, and I'm glad she, Cass, and Eugene include me in things, but they're all older than me. I feel like the tagalong little brother when I'm with them. Plus, none of them are interested in alchemy like I am. Cass can follow along when she checks on me in my lab, but I know she would rather do other things."

Arianna hummed, thinking over his words. "What about Faith, the maid?"

"Faith is nice, but she always keeps a level of professionalism between us when we talk. You know, since she technically works for me."

"Ah, I see. There's a difference in power between you," she nodded, acknowledging his point. "Didn't you mention you made friends with the youngest Kotoan princess?"

"Yeah, Nuru," Varian nodded, smiling a little as he thought about his friend. "But she has her duties to her kingdom, and letters only go so far. Besides, we have different interests. She likes astronomy, while I like alchemy. It's not a bad thing. We had fun when she showed me her favorite places to stargaze, and I helped her with a project related to her powers. I guess I'm trying to say that I want to meet an alchemist my age who isn't scared of me." He sighed again before looking at his stepmother. "I'm just being picky, aren't I?"

"No, Varian, you're not," Arianna assured him, holding his cheek. "I know you'll find who you're looking for someday."

"Thanks, Mom," Varian smiled before hesitating a little. "And Mom… if I said I wanted to learn to control my powers, would you be okay with that?"

Queen Arianna looked at him for a moment before smiling. "I'd say that they're your powers, Varian, and you're old enough now to make your own decisions about them. Just know that whatever you choose, I'll support you."

Varian smiled as his eyes became misty, hugging Arianna again. "Thanks, Mom."

"You're welcome," the queen smiled before pulling back. "Now, it's late, and I'm sure we're both tired. Don't stay up too late, okay?"

"Okay, Mom," he nodded as she got up. "Good night, Mom."

"Goodnight, dear," she kissed him on the forehead before leaving. He watched her go as Ruddiger hopped on the bed next to him.

Varian petted the raccoon with a small smile before looking at the moon, puzzled. Why did the rocks appear at the Sundrop Monument? How did touching them return their powers? And why did they chase them? There were so many questions, and yet, there were no answers…

(With Rapunzel)

Rapunzel was painting a picture of her father in her new journal. He was gazing at the moon with an unreadable expression, and she was writing about the day around the image. She sighed a little as she sat at her bay window, looking at Pascal on her shoulder. There was a knock on the door, grabbing their attention.

"Come in…" she said, closing her journal.

Eugene opened the door, a towel draped over his arm like a server, and he held up a plate with a cupcake. "I believe somebody ordered… room service." He smiled knowingly.

"Eugene," she smiled softly at him as Pascal hopped down to give them privacy. "How did you know?"

"Eh, I had a feeling," he said before dropping his smile and glancing away awkwardly. "Look, I just wanted to clear some stuff up." He walked over and sat beside her, handing her the plate before she set it aside. "I haven't had a chance to apologize for putting you on the spot with that proposal."

"Well, looking back, storming out of the room probably wasn't the best reaction." She gripped the sides of her neck with a weak smile before taking a small breath. "So, I'm… I'm sorry."

"No, no, don't apologize. I should've realized that six months is too soon for marriage." He reached out and placed his hand on top of hers. "But I promise I'm not upset that you turned me down. I still love you." He gave her a gentle smile, and she returned it as she took both of his hands in hers.

"Thanks, Eugene."

"And, in the meantime, we'll stay right here and take things slowly." He reached out to cup her hair. "I missed this."

She smiled at him before making a pleading expression. "Hey, promise me one thing?"

"Anything."

"That you'll be patient with me."

He cupped her cheek. "Absolutely." They both leaned in and gently kissed before holding her hands in his. "Good night, Rapunzel."

"Good night, Eugene…"

Eugene then got up, smiling at her one last time before heading for the door. She watched him go before turning back to the window as he closed the door.

"Back to life after happily ever after," she sang glumly, opening her window. "Stuck inside once again, and I'm gazing out." She looked out at the sky, frowning a little.

How did a trip to a monument with Varian's rocks lead to this? And how was her brother holding up now that his old nightmare had returned?

"True, I'm in here with those I hold dear," she continued, turning to her mural. "Surrounded by their love. And for some, that's more than enough, no doubt." She closed her eyes as a soft breeze shifted some of her locks around.

Back with Varian, he sat at his bay window, writing about the day in his journal. He wasn't as artsy as Rapunzel, so his pages looked like regular journal entries. However, a small sketch of his father and sister was in the corner. Finished for the moment, Varian glanced at his hands, having taken off his gloves since he was alone. He looked at the blue glow around his fingertips before focusing, willing his power to recede. He smiled a little when they obeyed. Still, he couldn't help but feel that his life had been reset to six months ago before his powers disappeared.

He frowned as he looked out the window, setting his journal aside. "Back to life after happily ever after," he sang softly, opening his balcony doors as he leaned on the railing. "Trapped behind castle walls again, and I'm missing out." Varian lightly touched his bangs before pulling off his goggles to look at them. They used to belong to his birth mother.

"Yes, she's back with our family at last, and we're beyond feeling," he continued, sitting up. "But still, it's not enough for me…"

The wind picked up, causing the blank pages of their journals to flutter, catching their attention. The siblings watched the pages open to their mother's "Plus est en vous" message. They smiled as they remembered what it meant. They didn't know why their hair and powers had returned, but they knew they wouldn't let it trap them again!

"But I've got the wind in my hair and a fire within 'cause there's something beginning!" The siblings stepped out onto their balconies, Rapunzel twirling a little as Varian strode forward with purpose. "I got a mystery to solve and excitement to spare!"

"That beautiful breeze blowin' through. I'm ready to follow it, who knows where." Rapunzel sang as the wind blew through her golden hair.

"And I'll get there, I swear…." Varian added.

"With the wind in my hair~!" They threw their hands out to the sides as they belted out the last words, night birds taking flight as Rapunzel's hair flowed from the tower like a flag.

This wasn't the end. This was a whole new beginning.

(Elsewhere)

Beyond the walls, a figure pushed through the foliage until they found what they were looking for: the Sundrop Monument. At the same time, another figure stepped out of the woods on the mainland, staring silently at the capital of Corona.

Alright! Before Ever After is over, we can move on to the series next time!

I hope I got everyone right. I pictured Quirin as a more reasonable father than Frederic. I also wanted to capture Varian's vulnerability while showing he wanted to regain control of his life. Then there's Eugene, who knows he goofed, and he's trying.

I was going to write more chapters to catch us up to before, but I'm a little burned out on this story. So, I will move on with editing the other Tangled stories. I was going to move on to Charmed after this, at least get the prologue rewritten and reposted.

I'll be back soon.
