Chapter 82: A Friend in Deed

A couple of days went by after Hearts and Hooves day and Spyro was out in town, heading to Pinkie Pie as he had the day off today and he wanted to hang out with the pink party pony for the day, though it was difficult to find her early in the morning as she was usually out on her morning walk greeting everypony in town. After a little bit, he found Pinkie Pie talking to Ms. Matilda near the apple stand Applejack had set up for the day to sell apples.

"Hey there Pinkie." Spyro said.

"Oh hey Spyro!" Pinkie said. "Happy Birthday 104 days from now."

"Aw, thanks little cupcake." Spyro said, kissing her cheek. "How is it you now everything about everypony?"

"Because everypony is my friend and I love to see my friends smile!" Pinkie replied. "So what are you doing today?"

"Nothing actually." Spyro replied. "I was given the day off today, so I thought I'd spend it with you today."

"Aw Spyro, you're so sweet." Pinkie said, leaning against him and smiling.

"Aw, you two are perfect for each other." Matilda said. "How did you get so lucky Pinkie?"

"Well, we sorta just hit it off after a little while." Pinkie replied. "He became my friend when we first met, and our feelings just soared from there! I remember everything about my friends, but I remember more about the pony I really care about, because...!"

Music then started to play as Pinkie then trotted along, the music going on, but he couldn't help but follow her, listening to the song as he felt like singing as well.

[Pinkie Pie]

My name is Pinkie Pie (Hello!)

[Spyro]

Come on and smile!

[Pinkie Pie and Spyro]

Come on and smile!

When the music ended and both he and Pinkie stopped singing, Pinkie saw a very unhappy looking donkey with black hair pulling a cart full of stuff, which he believed to belong to him as if he was moving into Ponyville.

"I've never seen you before!" Pinkie said.

"Kid, you're smarter than you look." The donkey said, walking past the two of them.

"Thanks!" Pinkie replied. "I'm Pinkie Pie, and this is my colt friend, Spyro. What's your name?"

The donkey didn't answer, but instead kept on walking away from them, so both he and Pinkie followed him to see who their new friend was and to figure out what he was going here when they noticed something written on the cart, so Spyro looked down to read what was on it.

"Property of CDD." Spyro said.

"I'm guessing that's short for Donkey." Pinkie said.

"Quick as a whip kid." The donkey said.

"Now what does that C stand for?" Pinkie asked.

She then started to guess his name by listing a bunch of random things that started with C, which seemed to be getting on his nerves until he finally snapped.

"Cranky!" He replied. "It stands for Cranky, alright!?"

"Hey, she was just curious is all, no need to snap." Spyro said, wrapping his wings around her barrel. "And I do apologize for her in advanced, she's the sorta pony that loves to throw parties. But, if you don't mind me asking, what does the middle D stand for?"

He mumbled to himself, not wanting to answer the question, but Pinkie wanted to know and pushed for the answer, but she didn't push too hard.

"Doodle." Cranky replied.

"Cranky Doodle Donkey?" Spyro asked.

"Oh, so you're a Cranky Doodle Donkey!?" She asked, music playing again.

[Pinkie Pie]

You're a Cranky Doodle Donkey,

A Cranky Doodle Donkey!

I never met you, but you're my new friend,

and I'm your best friend Pinkie Pie!

"Is she like this all the time?" Cranky asked, Spyro nodding his head.

"Come on Doodle, give a smile!" Pinkie said, forcing a smile, but it melted, Cranky glaring at her.

"No body calls me Doodle!" Cranky said.

Pinkie fell on her flank from what he said, allowing him to keep walking to who knew where, leaving Pinkie completely clueless.

"What just happened?" Pinkie asked, pulling Spyro into her mind again, but this time it was a paper world, freaking Spyro out. "Meet some pony new, check. Introduce myself, check. Sing random song oughta nowhere, check. Become instant best friend..." A big red X appeared over both Pinkie's and Cranky's head, indicating that it didn't happen. "Uncheck."

She then tilt her head, smacking the side of it until Spyro came out of her ear, falling face first onto the ground, covered in cotton candy and different kinds of candies, groaning as he felt his brain loose some brain cells.

"Pinkie, you really gotta stop pulling me into your head like that." Spyro said, getting up and shaking everything off of him.

"Sorry Spyro, but I just don't get it." Pinkie said. "Why would somepony not become instant best friends with me? Was it something I said? Something I did? Something I sang?"

"Sometimes some ponies don't want to be left alone Pinkie." Spyro replied. "It just takes time for somebody to get used to having new friends in a new place and it can't be instant or forced. Remember how Twilight was when she first arrived?"

"Well duh, of course I remember." Pinkie replied. "But right now, I need to work extra hard to become instant best friends with the new pony in town!"

She then rushed off after Cranky in the hopes of making him smile and become her friend, but Spyro just shook his head, knowing that the pink party pony was going to go to crazy lengths to make Cranky her friend, so he followed her to make sure she doesn't do anything too crazy. He followed the pink earth pony across town, the party animal acting like she was a spy when she hopped around Cranky.

"Hello Cranky Doodle!" Pinkie said, which he just walked away from her as fast as he could, but Pinkie caught up and walked next to him. "So, you moving to Ponyville?"

"What gave you the hint there kid?" Cranky asked. "The cart full of stuff maybe?"

"Hey, there's no need to be cranky all the time Cranky." Spyro said. "She's just trying to make you feel welcomed here in Ponyville. She's basically the friendliest pony you could ever meet."

Plus, I'd like to show you around all of Ponyville as your new best friend!" Pinkie offered.

"Listen kids, I have traveled all across Equestria." Cranky said. "I have made many friends. I don't need anymore."

"Gosh, I never get tired of making new friends." Pinkie replied, waving to some of her friends.

"Well why don't go and make more then, and leave me be!" Cranky suggested.

"But I don't need t go anyway, when I can stay and make friends... with you." Pinkie replied, tying his ears into a bow, which undid themselves as Crank sighed.

"Look kid-" Cranky said.

"Aw, you can call me Pinkie." She replied. "All my friends do. And this is Spyro, and he's a prince!"

"A prince?" Cranky asked, looking to Spyro, but just sighed again. "Look... kid. I came to Ponyville for some peace and quiet. All I want is some privacy, to be alone in my memories." As he said it, Spyro could sense something in his mind, peering into it to see what it was, but he only got a split second to see it, but not a very good look before he was booted out of Cranky's head. "All I want is to get to my new home and unpack my stuff."

"Cranky, you seem... unhappy about something." Spyro said, getting the Donkey's attention. "My Force abilities allow me to sense one's emotions and sometimes see their memories, but I can sense you're... missing something. Or somepony."

"Heh, smarter than you look your highness." Cranky said, actually cracking a smile. "Yes, I... HEY!" Spyro looked back and saw that Pinkie was messing around with Cranky's stuff. "Hey, don't touch those, please."

"Oh, look at these." Pinkie said, messing with some wind chimes.

"Pinkamena Diana Pie, get down here now!" Spyro said, making her slink out of his wagon. "Pinkie, it's not very polite to mess with someone else's stuff without their permission."

"But I-" Pinkie tried to say, but Spyro booped her nose.

"No, bad Pinkie, no touchy." Spyro said, playfully booping her again and making her smile. "I do apologize for Pinkie here. She's got the personality of a filly."

"And the mentality of one as well." Cranky replied, upsetting her. "Just stay off my wagon kid, ok?"

He then walked away from them and Spyro was going to try and cheer Pinkie up, but she was gone when he looked down at her, looking around to see where she went when he saw her pulling a wagon of her own, which was something he hasn't seen before, but knew something about it was party related.

"I promise not to touch your wagon, so I brought one of mine!" Pinkie said, getting in front of Cranky. "I use it to welcome folks."

"Oh boy." Spyro said.

She then unpacked the wagon and immediately music started to play, which he was familiar with as she played the same music many times when she greeted new ponies into Ponyville.

[Pinkie Pie]

Welcome, welcome, welcome,

a fine welcome to you!

Welcome, welcome, welcome,

I say how do you do?

Welcome, welcome, welcome,

I say hip hip hurray!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Ponyville today!"

She danced the whole time we was singing that song and slide as soon as it was over, but a moment later, what Spyro took to be an oven opened up and a whole mess of confetti came flying out, making the poor donkey's hair fly off, revealing it was a toupee while the confetti cannons fired cake batter, covering the three of them in the floury mix.

"Pinkie, did you put cake mix in the Confetti cannons again?" Spyro asked, shaking the batter off.

"Heh, whoops." She replied. "Must of mixed them up when I was putting it together." She then expertly got out of the mix, leaving a Pinkie shaped statue of herself before eating it. "But it's still good. Try some."

Cranky didn't pay attention and was reaching out as if trying to find something, his eyes covered in batter, making it difficult to see.

"Oh, where is it?" He asked. "Where is it?"

"Where's what?" Pinkie asked, turning to reveal she had Cranky's toupee on her flank.

"I think I found it." Spyro said, using his magic to lift the toupee off her flank, spooking her.

"AH, SPIDER!" She shouted, knocking the Toupee out of his magic and started to stomp on it.

"PINKIE!" Spyro exclaimed, pulling the ruined toupee out from underneath her and walking over to Cranky as he got the batter off his face. "Sorry about that Cranky."

"Oh, I can fix it!" Pinkie said.

"Pinkie no!" Spyro shouted, leaping towards her and tackling her before she could climb up the flag pole.

He wrestled with the pink mare, trying to keep her from embarrassing Cranky, but some of the ponies noticed him already and started to laugh, making him cover his head in embarrassment as the two wrestling ponies stopped wrestling all together, looking to the embarrassed donkey.

"Why are they laughing at him!?" Pinkie asked. "Cranky needs a new wig to cover his hairless head!"

"Pinkie, zip it!" Spyro exclaimed, reaching over and zipping her lips together with a literal zipper.

"I have had enough!" Cranky said, digging up some grass and using it as a wig, walking away from them.

"Oh, I'm loosing him!" Pinkie said, unzipping her lips.

"You ask me, you lost him the moment started messing with his stuff." Spyro said. "Pinkie, he's unhappy about something. I just-"

"Wait, I know!" Pinkie said.

Before she could stop her, she rushed forward, making Spyro fall to the ground as he tried to tackle her again. She then started to rush him off to who knew where, the cranky donkey trying his best to stop Pinkie from pushing him somewhere he didn't want to be at, but failed to do so as she was strong, making Spyro shake his head at her for trying to make it up for ruining his wig. Just to be courteous to the poor donkey, Spyro hooked himself up to the wagon that Cranky came to town with and followed the small trench made by Cranky, following it to the Lotus twins spa and was just approaching when Cranky came out, looking refreshed, but still unhappy.

"Hey Cranky." Spyro said, getting his attention. "I brought your cart for you, knowing you'd want it."

"Thank you your highness." Cranky said. "You didn't need to do that."

"Oh don't worry about it." Spyro replied. "And just call me Spyro. I don't go by my royal titles until I'm wearing my royal outfit. Look, I'd like to again apologize for Pinkie's actions. She just likes making new friends and she is very easy to get along with, if you don't mind the crazy antics."

"Thank you Spyro, but I'm fine." Cranky said. "I admit, she's nice, but I just want to be left alone. And, I'd hate to ask, but could you help me move into my new home? It's not too far."

"Sure thing Cranky." Spyro replied. "It's not a problem."

"Hi Cranky!" Pinkie said. "I got a gift for you!"

"The spa treatment was gift enough." Cranky replied.

"Don't worry Cranky, it won't explode, promise." Pinkie replied. Cranky looked to Spyro, who nodded his head, so he opened it and inside was a new toupee, blonde in color and styled elegantly. Pinkie took it the box and put it over Cranky's head, pulling it off to show he was wearing it now. "It's a new Toupee. I had my friend Rarity make for you. She calls it the Dreamboat special."

She pulled out a mirror for Cranky to look into having a look at the new head of hair he has and actually seemed happy with it before becoming unhappy about something.

"It's wonderful." Cranky said. "Thank's kid."

Cranky then walked away from Pinkie with Spyro close behind, pulling his cart for him followed to where he was going to, heading to the outskirts of town were there was a modest looking, surrounded by some trees and a peaceful surrounding. Spyro pulled up close to the door and unhooked himself from the cart, helping Cranky to unpack all his things and move them into his house, moving a few boxes into the place while also putting a few items where Cranky asked them to go to.

"Hey there Cranky!" Pinkie said, scaring him. "Whatcha doing there old buddy old pal!?"

"What's it look like?" Cranky asked.

"Looks like a yard sale." Pinkie said, picking up a snow globe.. "I'll give ya two bits for this!"

"Pinkie, it's not a yard sale." Spyro said, coming out of the house. "He's unpacking everything here. He asked me to help."

"Well why didn't he ask me!?" Pinkie asked. "I'd be more than happy to help unpack!"

"Because I didn't want anything broken." Cranky replied. "And can you please put that down, gently."

"Where'd you get it at?" Pinkie asked, walking in and putting it on the fire place.

"Manehattan." Cranky replied. "I got it an Manehattan."

"What were you doing there?" Pinkie asked.

"Looking for a friend." Cranky replied.

"Oh, I'm always finding friends!" Pinkie said, bouncing up and flipping over. "She how good I am at it? I found you."

"This was a special friend." Cranky added.

"Like me?" Pinkie asked.

"No Pinkie, you're extra special." Cranky replied, making Pinkie happy.

He then walked out of the house and Spyro followed him, helping him to move some more things into the house when pinkie came out and saw some ornaments.

"Oh, where'd you get this Cranky!?" Pinkie asked.

"Philidelphia." Cranky replied.

"It's very pretty." Pinkie said.

"Yeah she was." Cranky said, both of them hearing what he said and realizing they heard him. "I mean it was, I mean it is! Oh, yes, it's very pretty now put it down Pinkie!"

Pinkie knew she was treading on thin ice and went over to the nearby table, putting the ornament down while he and Spyro went out to get some more stuff to bring in. As Pinkie set down the ornament, she noticed a book and opened it, looking in to see it was a photo album and saw somepony that looked very familiar to her.

"Hey Cranky, can I ask about-" Pinkie said, but abruptly stopped talking, worrying Spyro as he knew something happened.

"What was that Pinkie?" Cranky asked, he and Spyro walking in and saw the book was on fire. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?"

Spyro quickly rushed over and sucked the fire into his mouth, holding it for a minute before spitting it into the fire place, letting the flame burn out as there was no fuel for it to stay lit.

"Pinkie!" Spyro exclaimed.

"I-I'm sorry." Pinkie said, curling herself into a ball. "It was an accident."

"Oh, you're sorry!" Cranky said. "That makes it all better then doesn't it."

"It does?" Pinkie asked.

"No, it doesn't!" Cranky replied. "Listen to me kid, I will never be your friend!!

"What do you mean?" Pinkie asked. "Never or never ever?"

"Never ever, ever, ever, ever!" Cranky shouted, slamming the door in her face.

"Hey, I know she's a bit wild, but it was an accident!" Spyro exclaimed. "You don't need to be nasty about it!"

"Well she destroyed my photo album!" He shouted back. "It's the only thing I have left to remember her by!"

"Who's her?" Spyro asked.

"My special friend." Cranky replied, sitting down at the table with the charred book. "She was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life. We met at the gala and it was the most magical night of my life, probably the best night of my life. We danced, we laughed, we enjoyed each other's company. I knew that day that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. But when I went to her room the next day, she was gone."

"Did she leave a note or anything?" Spyro asked.

"No, no she didn't." He replied. "So, I went searching for her, going from town, to town, to town for years. But eventually, I gave up and came here to Ponyville, retiring from my search for her. She's probably married by now and has a family."

"I'm sorry to hear that you never found her." Spyro said. "If you don't mind me asking, what was your friend's name?"

"Her name was Matilda." Cranky replied, Spyro's ears perking up instantly and his eyes wide with surprise after hearing that. "She was the most beautiful pony donkey that I ever knew."

"By Celestia's mane." Spyro whispered to himself.

"I'm sorry, what was that?" Cranky asked.

"Oh, nothing." Spyro replied. "Just, talking to myself. "I'll go and get some more of your stuff and bring it in, you just rest for a little while."

He got up form the table and went outside of the house, leaving a very depressed Cranky alone in the room staring at his destroyed scrapbook while Spyro went out and found Pinkie coming back, looking very unhappy.

"Pinkie, I need you to do something for me." Spyro said.

"Can it wait?" Pinkie asked. "I want to apologize to Cranky for destroying his Scrapbook."

"Pinkie, words aren't going to fix this, but somepony else can." Spyro replied, confusing the pink party mare.

He then walked up and leaned in, whispering to her what he had discovered and her eyes lit up, her jaw dropping to the ground as she heard what it was Spyro was telling her.

"No... way!" Pinkie said. "I knew I saw all those things before! Why didn't I put it all together before!?"

"Think you can bring her here?" Spyro asked. "Might be way better than just saying you're sorry."

"You kidding me?" Pinkie asked. "I'll have her here in no time flat!"

She then jumped into Spyro's coat pocket, the young prince looking in to see what she was doing, but she wasn't there anymore, leaving him speechless about how she did that, but just shook his head, not wanting to give himself a headache. He kept on picking up and moving the remainder of Cranky's stuff into his new house, smiling to himself as he imagined how happy he was going to be when Pinkie brought Matilda to his home. After helping to put a few things away, somepony knocked on door, letting them know someone was there, but they both knew who it was, Cranky not so happy about it while Spyro was very pleased.

"Go away Pinkie!" Cranky said. "You already caused enough damage here, I don't want you to destroy anything else that I have left! And even if you brought me something, I ain't accepting as it would probably turn out to be a disaster!"

"Goodness, you really are cranky." Matilda said, surprising Cranky.

"Is-is that...?" Cranky asked.

"Sounds like Matilda." Spyro said, surprising Cranky.

Without even asking, he immediately rushed to the door of his house and opened the door, looking out to see Pinkie standing outside and Matilda standing next to her, completely lost for words.

"M-Matilda?" Cranky asked. "But... how?"

"Pinkie of course." Matilda replied. "She brought me here."

"But, I don't understand." Cranky said. "I never told you about Matilda, only Spyro."

"Well, I looked in your Scrapbook before I accidentally burned it." Pinkie said. "I saw that you had the same things that Matilda had in her scrapbook, plus Spyro told me what you said about Matilda being the special friend you were looking for."

"You told her?" Cranky asked.

"Why wouldn't I?" Spyro asked. "Matilda has been a resident of Ponyville for a long time from what Pinkie told me, so I knew that she could bring her here to you, brightening your day up instantly."

"Matilda..." He said, walking up to her. "I've been looking for you everywhere."

"Didn't you get my note?" She asked.

"You left a note?" Cranky asked. "I didn't see one anywhere in the room."

"Must have been on the door inside of the room." Spyro said. "Pinkie did the same thing when the cake twins were born, wouldn't have seen it if I didn't enter the room and turn around." Cranky cracked a smile, hugging Matilda as she hugged him, seeing a tear roll down his face. "It seems your journey has brought you here in the very end. Your heart told you to look for the woman you loved and to continue your search, even if it was fruitless. However, in the end, your journey brought you here to Ponyville, the place the love of your life was living in the entire time. Whether it was the will of the Force, or your heart guiding you to this place, you found the woman you loved."

"However you put it, it doesn't matter." Matilda said. "In the end, you finally found me, Doodle."

"Um, Matilda, no pony calls him Doodle." Pinkie said.

"No pony, but Matilda." He replied, hugging her again.

The two hugged each other and refused to stop, Spyro smiling at them as he wrapped his wings around the pink party mare, the two of them leaning their heads onto one another as they were happy for the couple, finally reunited after who knew how long.

"Thank you Pinkie." Cranky said. "Thank you both."

"Does this mean you accept my apology!?" Pinkie asked excitedly.

"Yes Pinkie, I do." Cranky said. "And I am very honored to be called your friend."

As he said that, Pinkie became very excited, shaking with pure excitement until she shot up into the air and exploded like a firework.

"WOOHOO!" She shouted. "This is fantastic! Now we can hang out, chat, sing songs and-"

Spyro then raised his hoof up and pressed it against her lips, silencing her and looking to see the two love birds.

"Pinkie, how about we leave them alone for a while." Spyro suggested. "It has been a long time since they last saw one another, I think they'd like to take time, catch up, and be alone. We can't always want to party all the time. Sometimes you need to take time for yourself, be alone, and enjoy your own company from time to time, without the hassle of being disturbed." He then turned his head and looked at the pink party pony, leaning his head down to hers as he spoke. "But that doesn't mean I won't spend some time with you."

The two of them then kissed each other, a long and passionate kiss as the two other love birds went into the house, Spyro and Pinkie walking away to let them have their alone time together.

[Pinkie Pie]

We had a Yankee Doodle Sweetheart,

[Spyro]

She's his cranky doodle joy.

[Pinkie Pie]

I helped the cranky doodle boy, yeah!

I helped a cranky doodle boy!

She was then hit with a small dart, causing her to go tipsy as she staggered around a little bit before collapsing to the ground, looking over to see Spyro had a blow dart and had used it on Pinkie.

"Why didn't I do that in the first place?" Spyro asked.

The three of them started to laugh as pinkie came back to, the dart only being a mild sedative as he did want to spend the rest of the day with pinkie Pie before having to head back to the farm, the pink mare joining the laughter as they all enjoyed the small bit of fun they had together. At Malefors palace, May was coming up to the statue of her master, dark purple smoke coming out of it as she approached, bowing to him as she awaited to hear from him.

"May, I have sensed a disturbance in the flow of power." Malefor said. "The prince has grown even stronger than last you faced him. Something has changed."

"I sensed it to master." She replied. "His power is growing with each day that passes. How am I supposed to compete against his ever growing powers?"

"He has discovered a new universe." Malefor replied. "One in which holds a great power, power in which I can use to free myself without the key."

"Shall I invade this universe my master and claim this power?" May asked.

"Yes my loyal servant, you may." Malefor replied. "This power is separated into six different stones, each containing their own power. Go to the World of Marvels and claim the two stones that are on that world, bring them to me. Destroy all those who get in your way." May bowed her head, acknowledging the mission before a dark cloud appeared in front of her, from it was a red pouch with a symbol of a skull on it. "Take this with you, use its contents on the prince. This should bring him down low."

May bowed her head again and took the pouch full of who knows what, attacking it to her belt before walking out of the room, the light inside of the dragon statue dying out as dark laughter echoed through the room and outside of the palace, dark storm clouds circling the palace as he continued to laugh.
