AN: Small delay, I gotta rewatch the series to remember the order of the words. But no matter, progress shall be made. One last filler to really set the stage for me, then we will progress.
One more thing. I know that canonically, Akko is like 4 inches shorter than Chariot. Not here. For the sake of the story they will be the same height, with Akko eventually getting taller. I will reveal why, but yeah…just in case anyone has an active imagination like I do.
Luna Nova, Akko's room
"What to do, what to do" The sounds of flapping could be heard down the hallway, drawing Ursula to its source. Ursula stepped up to the doorway of Akko's room but paused when she heard her voice.
"Kano, do you think we can do this? It's a lot of pressure. There's this thing with okaasa, training with otosan, figuring out what the hell is up with the emperor…and then Chariot…" The soft sigh was quite deafening.
"Usagi-chan, we will do what we have always done. Take it one day at a time." A thump is heard and Ursula peeks around the doorway to see Kano and Akko in a pile on the floor. "No one will take you away from me. And I will bite anyone who tries to hurt you Usagi-chan. You are my clutchmate and my best friend. My family begins and ends with you." Kano cuddles down into Akko and lets out a little puff of fire.
Akko strokes his scales gently. "I'm not going to let anyone break us apart Kano. I love you too much." She pulls him tighter to her and sighs. "Are you okay with expanding our pack of two to a pack of three? I know its different and OW! What the hell was that for?" Akko rubs her arm and glares at the little dragon.
"Chari-chan is important to you. Even I know how rare soulmates are. You are lucky usagi-chan." Kano gives her a glare then cuddles into her stomach. "I feel you in her magic. It's soothing. I like her Usagi-chan"
"I do too little dragon, do you think she can like a kid like me?" Akko picks him up, lays flat on the ground, and places him back on her stomach stroking his scales while magically rearranging the room.
Ursula decided it was her time to step in. "What's not to like? I don't see a child, but a very intelligent woman who has the weight of the world on her shoulders. I am grateful that you are willing to look beyond my past and accept me for who I am." The magic stops while Ursula steps closer then kneels on the ground to pet Kano. She gets a satisfied purr in response before standing once more. "This bond isn't making me feel anything. We will start slow and see where we land."
Akko looks up at her with big eyes. "How long have you been there?"
Ursula cocks her head in thought. "When you started listing off all the things that have happened"
"Oh so since the beginning…right." Akko moves Kano to the ground, stands up, and brushes the imaginary dirt off of her. "To what do I owe this fortuitous visit?" Akko bows then looks up with a huge grin on her face.
Ursula blushes. "Charming." She shakes her head to focus. "I actually came to give you this." She pulls a broom from behind her back. "Your school issued broom."
Akko frowns before grabbing it. "Is there a rule that says I have to use the school issue one?"
Ursula leans up against the bunkbeds. "I don't think there has ever been someone who doesn't want the broom. Is there a reason you don't want it?"
Akko scratches her head before sheepishly smiling. "I built my own broom and am very attached to it. I don't want to ride any other broom unless I absolutely have to." She frowns at the broom in her hand. "I guess I could ask Auntie if she would be willing to make an exception." She frowns once more at the broom then shrinks it and puts it in her pocket. "Are you free tonight? I mean after the family dinner, are you free to maybe do something with me?" Akko asks looking straight into Ursula's eyes.
Another blush graces Ursula's face. "What did you have in mind? I should also point out that as your guidance counselor I cannot condone you breaking school rules" She says with a playful smirk.
"How did you end up with that bad job?" Kano asked from his spot on the floor.
"Headmistress Miranda thought it might help us grow closer without bringing too many questions our way." Another blush graces her face as Akkos excitement takes over the room. Ursula could see her magic sparking in delight.
"Auntie is on a roll here. You are my guidance counselor and healing teacher. I think you're going to get sick of me."
Ursula tilted her head to the side and looked at the woman in front of her. "I don't foresee that ever being a problem Akko." Ursula tilts her head back and looks up at the ceiling. "I think the opposite is true. You will get tired of me. Everyone does." Her voice breaks.
Akko and Kano share a look before Kano flies past and closes the door. Akko steps closer to Ursula, grabs her hand, and kneels in front of her. She looks up at the startled eyes. "I will make you a separate vow. I vow to love you in such a way that you will never question my intentions. I vow to love you in such a way that your past will feel like nothing but a fever dream. I vow to love you in such a way that you will never ever be alone. I've loved you since I was a little girl and that love has only grown as I have. Call it idol worship, but that day so many years ago, you didn't just steal a piece of my magic…you stole my heart. The thing is, I don't want it back. My heart is yours to do with it as you please. If you tell me to stand up and walk away from you forever, I would do so. That is how much your wishes and desires mean to me." Akko kisses the hand held delicately in hers. "I've had 10 years to love you. And finding out that you are my soulmate was nothing more than the answer to all my prayers. I will never leave you. Not if I can help it." She sees a tear fall onto their clasped hands and stands up to wipe the tears away from Ursula's face. "Like my dad said, there is no place that is too far for us. I will always make my way home…to you. That is a promise, okay?" She cups the cheek in front of her to keep Ursula's eyes on hers.
Ursula nods with more tears streaming down her face. "How can you be so good to me?"
Akko pulls her into a hug. "You were a victim just as much as I was. I think you have spent enough time in the dark, it's time to bring you back to the light. To stand next to me in your rightful place in this world." Kano flies over and lands on her shoulder. "You belong here with us. It's not going to be easy at first. We both have things to work through, but anywhere you are is where I want to be."
Ursula shakes her head in Akko's shoulder. "This is crazy, you know we have only really known each other for a couple of days. There is no way you can feel like this already. It's crazy Akko."
Akko pulls back. "Crazier than finding your soulmate the same day you come to school?" She grabs one of Ursula's hands and places it on her chest. "Do you trust me?" Ursula nods. "Okay close your eyes." Akko watches as she closes her eyes. "Alright, now I want you to very slowly reach out your magic towards me. Kinda like when you met the mistress."
Ursula opens her eyes and frowns. "Isn't this dangerous between two people."
Akko chuckles. "I have a hypothesis. Now is just the perfect time to test it. Now eyes closed and focus."
"Yes Professor Kagari."
Akko groans. "That is soooo not fair and really kind of hot. Focus Akko." She slaps herself then shakes her head. "Now keep reaching that tendril out to me."
"How will I know that I'm doing what you want?"
"You'll know, just trust me" Akko whispered in her ear. She closed her eyes and lowered her magical barrier. She could feel Ursula's magic vine on the outskirts of her magic. "Keep pushing through, you are almost there." The vine poked her magic and Akko flooded her magic with her love and thoughts about Ursula. Memories of Akko fighting with her father about saving Chariot. Memories of Akko relearning her magic and telling herself that its all to meet Chariot. Akko's feelings for Chariot. That was the biggest and brightest thing that Ursula could see.
Ursula let out a gasp and shot her eyes open. She watched fixated as Akko slowly let the magic recede and open her eyes. "Akko…i?"
Akko shook her head and smiled. "I'll never hide any part of me from you. You are a part of me as much as I am a part of you. So please, just let me love you." The two witches stood still wrapped around each other, basking in the beautiful moment before a growl came from Akko's stomach. Ursula chuckled in response.
"Smooth Usagi-chan, you had me think you could be real smooth then your stomach messed it up." Kano said flying over to his perch.
"Oi! It wasn't intentional. I just haven't eaten breakfast." Akko steps out of Ursula's grip and moves to the door. "Chariot?" Akko turns and looks at her mate. "I want you to know that I don't expect anything more than you can give. Do not feel like you have to return my feelings. I want you to make your own choices." Akko offers her a smile then opens the door and heads into the hallway.
Ursula blushes and puts a hand on her chest feeling her rapid heart beat. "Oh Akko, how can you so smart and so foolish at the same time?" She feels a weight on her shoulders and glances that the dragon perched there.
"That's our Usagi-chan. Sooooo smart but soooo dumb. Really I think my scales are going to go white from all the stress." Kano cuddles into Ursula's shoulder and sighs. "Chari-chan, I know you love her. It was written all over your face. She just has to be…erm what does nii-san call her…oh! Dramatic. She will come to her senses soon."
Ursula strokes his scales. "You are wise for such a young dragon." She walks out of the room, with the intention to follow Akko.
"With a master like Usagi-chan, I had no choice." Kano huffs.
Ursula giggles before asking, "does she get into a lot of trouble?"
Kano immediately lifts his head to look at Ursula. "A lot is an understatement Chari-chan. I've had to grow up because usagi-chan refuses to."
She rubs his head in sympathy. "Have you ever thought, maybe it's her way of coping with growing up?"
"That doesn't seem right Chari-chan."
Ursula stops at the windows and sees Akko running to tackle Kai in the courtyard. "I think she has been through too much in a short amount of time, that this is her way of reminding herself that she is still young." Ursula keeps looking outside at the chaos in the courtyard. "Kano, do dragons have tales of soulmates?"
"You do know I am a young dragon right?" Kano flicked his tail playfully. "Papa used to tell me that every species great or small is at the will of fate. Soulmates are just apart of that. The universe deems two people a perfect match in everyway and binds them. It is a bond that can do unspeakable things." Kano looks out at his master then back at the woman he is with. "Usagi-chan can already do unspeakable things. But it costs her so much. I think having someone with her will just make her better. I think you are perfect for the job. So," his tail pushes her chin up. "Chin up buttercup! We have a Usagi-chan to support."
"You are a good familiar Kano."
"You have it wrong Chari-chan, I have the best master. It makes sense that I am a reflection of her greatness." Kano's head shoots up and he looks at Ursula. "Time to go Chari-chan, breakfast is in nii-san's room today."
Luna Nova, Astronomy tower, Ursula's quarters 1630
Ursula plopped herself onto her bed. What a day. Such a heavy start then it ended up being a normal school day. Alcor flew over to his master and landed on her stomach. Ursula stroked his feathers as she thought about the events of the day. "Akko showed me how she felt Alcor. I'll admit I am both terrified and awestricken by this woman who is my mate."
Do you find yourself drawn to her or put off by her approach.
The hand petting his feathers stopped and Alcor took a glance at his master. A distraught look had overcome her face. "I would never be 'put off' by her Alcor. I don't know if I am worthy of her."
And yet fate chose you.
"Could fate be wrong?" The hand resumed stroking his feathers. "Do I really deserve something like this?"
I have spent 10 years watching over you Chariot. You are the one who deserves the most happiness. You have endured your trials. Now enjoy the rewards. Alcor tilts his head. Could the young mage perhaps not be to your liking? He watched as his master became red in the face. Clearly that is not the case. What is stopping you Chariot? What is the real reason you hesitate? You know the sanctity of soul mates. If you feel drawn to her, why hesitate?
"She's young Alcor."
As are you. What is 9 years to a witch? Do you feel something for her? Ursula sits up and sticks her face in Alcor's breast feathers. He feels a rumbling against his chest and lets out a twill. Not so old to not stick to your old tricks. I could not hear you Chariot. Do you feel something for her?
"Yes" came the sheepish response.
Well then it is simple. Now you get the girl.
"Is it that simple?"
Love is only as complicated as you make it young one.
"Yes Alcor." She fixes the crow with a look. "I forget sometimes who is the master in this relationship"
Alcor ruffles his feathers. You will always be my master Chariot, but that doesn't mean you know what is best.
"Right. Okay. I need to change for dinner. Akko and I are going somewhere after dinner. She said to dress comfortable." Ursula moves to her closet and Alcor flies to his perch at her movement. "What is comfortable but says I want to pursue this with you?" She pulls a dress out of her closet and puts it in front of her swinging around to Alcor. "Thoughts?"
Perhaps a new wardrobe is necessary Chariot? You can no longer hide behind those boxy clothes. Your mate is powerful, you need to show the world you can match that power and prestige…and that begins with a good wardrobe.
"You are too right. Wait how do you know this?" I wasn't always a crow Chariot. "Nevermind that, I need to go to town. Dinner is in 2 hours. That should be plenty of time?" Ursula grabs her broom and dashes out the door. "Bye Alcor I will see you when I get back! Thanks for the help."
Alcor ruffles his feathers before placing his head on his chest. One day, she will listen to me and figure a way to set me free.
Brightonbury, England
Where can I find a decent wardrobe in a short period of time? Ursula contemplated as she walked through town looking at the window displays for something that catches her eye. On her way over to the last dress shop. She sees Amanda O'Neill walking out of a café mumbling about a broom. Well that sounds ominous, but a problem for another time. I need help and I only have an hour and a half. Merlin help me. Ursula bumped into someone and goes to apologize. "Ms. Cavendish! I apologize are you hurt?"
Diana brushed down her uniform and set her eyes on her professor an admonishment on the tip of her tongue for the normally ditzy witch. But she could see the worry in her eyes. "Professor Callistis, are you alright? You look as though you are having difficulty." Diana kept an eye on her as if looking at a skittish feline.
Ursula blushed and went to brush aside the concern before really thinking about it. "Ms. Cavendish, I would like your help on a personal matter. If you would be willing to help…me?"
Diana tilted her head taking in the woman in front of her. "You don't seem the type to ask for help Professor. In fact, I do remember hearing that you prefer to keep to yourself and not cause any trouble. So if help is what you need, then who am I to decline such a plea?"
Merlin save me from overly charismatic students. "Thank you Ms. Cavendish." Ursula looked around at the shops surrounding them. "The matter…well I need a new wardrobe." She watched as Diana's eyebrows rose in surprise. "Shocking yes I admit. But I recently found that I have family in the area and would like to meet them in something other than my work uniform." Perfect excuse Chariot, you can't let your mate's ex know that you want to impress her. "I haven't seen him in over 10 years and I don't want him to think that I've grown into an old maid. I want him to be impressed by my accomplishment of obtaining this position at Luna Nova."
Diana eyed the woman in front of her. "Professor, is what you are wearing what your wardrobe consists of?" At the blush and hanging of her head, Diana took that to mean yes. "Right well, the premiere wardrobe shop is a little further in town." Diana pointed to a lavish building two streets away. "You can go there and they would be able to help you." Diana watched as panic set into the features of the witch. "Or I can go with you and try my best to assist."
Ursula smiled and grabbed Diana by the arm dragging her to the shop. "Oh thank you Ms. Cavendish and pardon my familiarity but I am on a time crunch. Dinner is in just over an hour."
"The pleasure is all mine Professor. Let's make you dinner ready. Every good battle requires armor."
Ursula dropped her arm as they walked through the door of the shop. "Is dinner considered a battle?"
"Any social event is a battle Ms…"
"Callistis. Professor Callistis" Um who am I? James Bond? A hand reaches for hers and is brought to lips and given a kiss. Ursula's eyes get wide in panic. "Um, and who are you sir?"
The man gently lets go of her hand and gives her a graceful bow. "My name is Julian Professor and I am the proprietor of this shop. Ms. Cavendish is a reliable client of mine; therefore any friend of hers is treated just as good, if not better than she is." He sends a wink in Diana's direction earning him a giggle. "What kind of battle are we heading into my dear?" He looks over her figure and moves his finger in a circular motion to which Diana spins Ursula around. "You have quite the figure hiding under that shapeless dress don't you?"
Diana crosses her arms over her chest. "The professor has family that she is meeting for dinner in a little over an hour. We will be looking at designs that you have already created, as well as getting her measurements for a whole new wardrobe."
"Wait Ms. Cavendish…"
"Professor, did you know that Luna Nova provides its professors with a clothing allowance? Based on the state of your uniform, I would say that you were not aware." She motions her hand over the items in the shop. "You can choose anything you want in this shop and I will guarantee to have it covered by the school."
Diana looks up to find the professor and Julian whispering to one another.
"She's quite terrifying." "The school has no idea what kind of monster she is." "Will they really pay for it" "I guarantee they will."
Diana glares at them and Julian claps loudly. "Well ladies, we do have some work ahead of us." He grabs Ursula's hand and brings her to a clothing rack. "Professor, what kind of things would you like to wear?"
Ursula chances a glance at Diana and whispers to Julian. "It's a little private, but something that makes me look powerful and graceful."
Julian catches onto her need for secrecy. "A little more than just family then?" he whispers back. "No worries. We will find you an armor worthy of you. Let's see you strike me as a winter or autumn." He pulls her hat off and pulls off the glasses too. "I am definitely getting more winter now. Although those eyes…well we will work with a winter palette for now. The question, dress or pants?"
Ursula looks over the rack of clothing and thinks about Akko. "For tonight, I will say pants. But for this wardrobe, I think a healthy mix would be acceptable. I think my future is going to be a lot more interesting and will make me have a need for more fashionable clothes."
Julian grabs several pairs of pants then grabs something out of the air. "Okay let's see your measurements." He pushes Ursula into the fitting room. "Diana and I will stay out here, please remove everything and let the tape do it's job." Julian walks away when he hears a yelp coming from the fitting room. "Hehe it happens to everyone. I do remember when you had a similar reaction Diana." He said in a singsong voice.
Diana just nodded. "It is alarming to have your space being invaded so intimately, but your work speaks for itself." She looks back over to the fitting room. "I hope you will be able to help her."
Just then the measuring tape shoots out of the fitting room and lands in Julian's outstretched hand. "Oh my. Diana, you have brought me quite a gem! Tall, lean, but strong. She is a perfect model. Absolutely exquisite." He keeps walking around the shop placing more items of clothing into his arms before coming to a stop in front of the fitting room. "Professor? I am going to levitate the clothes into the room for you. I have arranged them in outfits. Please start with the first one and come out so we can assess."
The duo stood waiting outside the fitting room before they heard the curtain slide open. They look up to see Ursula in dark wash jeans and a light gray sweater.
Diana gives Julian a glance. "Nonmagical clothes?"
Julian nods and walks over to Ursula. "She never stated that the person she was going to be meeting was apart of the magical community." He starts adjusting the hemline of the sweater and pinning the pants for alterations. "We have to give her a diverse enough wardrobe so she has armor for any situation." He stands and gives Ursula a smile. "Okay next outfit please."
This cycle continued for six more outfits before Ursula walked out with the last outfit given to her. It was a deep red sleeveless sweater with dragon leather pants and dark, deep crimson riding boots. Julian let out a yelp of wonder. "Professor! You look stunning. Wouldn't you agree Diana?"
Diana jolted to at the question directed her way. "If I saw you on the street in that outfit, I would never think you are the same meek professor who walked in this shop with me. You look beautiful professor." You are not allowed to catch feelings for a professor just because Akko doesn't want you. Focus Diana. Work to stand on your own.
Julian shook his head. "I think you mean to say hot Diana! Professor, you exude a quiet power. The change over your person is breathtaking." Julian hummed to himself, happy with his choices in clothes. "I saw we throw out the old uniform and dress you in these delicious leather pants and boots as your new uniform. Diana, that is within the rules right?"
Looking up at the ceiling pensively, Diana looks back down at Julian and smiles. "I do believe so. It is tasteful and doesn't expose any unnecessary skin. The professor looks professional and powerful, almost as if she is heading to battle or to coffee with a loved one. It is a good look."
Julian jumps for joy. "Perfect. I will be adding 8 more pairs of these pants and the boots in all the deepest shades I can get them in. Your sweaters will all be deep colors, a special wardrobe for my special winter. I will select a dress style that I think suits you. Say goodbye to the boxy clothes Professor Winter!" He exclaims as he lights her old dress on fire. "Let me change the color of this hat to black." He grabs the hat that she came in with and in an instant it was the deepest shade of black to match her pants. "I will do something about that hair of yours. The loose ponytail is very demure. We are trying to break you from that. Let's see. Something fierce, just like the new you. Hmm how about this?" With a wave of his hand Ursula felt a prickly feeling of magic on her head.
"Um Julian? Are you going to let me see how I look?"
"Of course Professor Winter! Just one more thing. Why do you wear these glasses?" He puts them on and takes them off frowning. "There is no prescription on them? Were you intentionally trying to hide your beautiful eyes?"
Ursula has the sense to blush. "I wanted to blend in with my surroundings Julian."
He threw the glasses on the ground and stomped on them. "Consider it a thing of the past! You my dear are absolutely lovely. Do not ever make yourself less than that." He conjured a full-length mirror and turns it towards Ursula. "Please take a look at this powerful young witch. You are gorgeous Professor Winter."
Ursula finally looked at herself in the mirror. Clad in the outift Julian had hand selected for her, she felt as powerful as he said she was. She loved the messy braid he put her hair into. It was classy yet wild. A perfect contrast in her humble opinion. "Julian, is that really me?"
Julian came up behind her and placed both hands on her shoulders. "My dearest Professor Winter. This is who you are meant to be. I just gave you the armor to enhance your natural beauty." He offered her a smile and turned her to face him. "You will do great things. Now if my math is correct, you have 20 minutes before you need to leave for dinner? We are doing a deep winter palette for you, but I want to know if there are any things you don't want?"
Ursula shakes her head. "No, I think it is safe to trust your judgment on these things. Ms. Cavendish," she started looking at Diana. "Is there anyway I can speak to Julian alone? I appreciate all your assistance in bringing me here, but I do believe it is time to take charge for myself."
Diana opened her mouth to object but Julian just shook his head. "Very well. I will see you back at school professor." She nods her head at Julian. "I bid you farewell for now Julian." Both Julian and Ursula watch as Diana walk out the door, with the bell above the door chiming to signal her exit.
Ursula turns to Julian and gives him a sheepish smile. "I cannot in good conscience allow the school to pay for this. But I cannot have Ms. Cavendish knowing who I am. Not yet." Ursula passes over a bank sheet.
Julian looks down at the sheet then turns white. "Du Nord?" He looks up and searches Ursula's face. "You are Chariot?" Ursula stiffens then nods. "No wonder you were hiding. Don't worry Professor Winter. Your secret is safe with me." He passes her back the blank bank sheet. "Consider this a gift Professor Winter." He holds up a hand when Ursula begins to protest. "Please consider this as a welcome back gift. I was in France when Croix made her announcement. What happened to you is unforgiveable, but I am glad to see that you are taking your life back." He comes around the counter and gives Ursula a gentle hug. "Forgive my forwardness, but I want to welcome you back to the world of magic." He releases her and offers her a deep bow. "The village of Luna Nova is proud to welcome the most talented witch of her generation back home. Should you need any help, I will be at your beck and call."
Ursula covers her mouth in shock at his words. "Julian, this is too much. Please just treat me like a normal person."
Julian stands and smiles. "How about a friend? I gather you don't have many of those."
"A friend huh? No the last one I had made me a magical pariah."
Julian scowled. "Yes well no worries there. The only thing I want is to continue to make your wardrobe fabulous!" He holds out his hand.
"I think I will trust you to do that, thank you Julian." Ursula grabs his hand and shakes. She lets go, intent on walking out before pausing. "Do you think this is suitable for a date?" She looks down at her outfit then up at Julian nervously.
Julian places his chin in his hand and gives her a bright grin. "I think you look delectable for any occasion Professor Winter. Knock em dead."
Ursula just gives him a smile and waves before walking out.
Julian looks up at the ceiling of his shop. "Should I? Yes I should…" He walks to the back of his shop to the roped of stairs and starts going up. "Adél…you won't believe who was just in my shop!"
Hallways of Luna Nova.
"Who is that? She's so pretty!"
"I don't remember us having a professor who looks like that. Is she new?"
"Finally, a professor who doesn't dress like a hag. She's so fashion forward. I can't wait to have her class!"
"Wow she's hot. Ow! Constanze I was just stating the obvious. You know I only have feelings for you!"
Ursula kept walking through the hallway on her way to Kai's quarters, blushing at all the comments she was hearing.
"Professor Callistis!" Ursula turned and saw Diana. "Welcome back to Luna Nova". She gave her a smile before walking off with Hannah and Barbara. Ursula smiled and walked off with her head held high. Not hearing the chatter that started up after the shock of just who Diana revealed that to be wore off of the students standing in the hallway.
Amanda pointed at the back of Ursula. "THAT was Professor Callistis?!" The students around her agreed with her shock. "Well I'll be damned, she is hot! Guess I'll be paying more attention in class. OW CONZ! I told you I only have feelings for you." Amanda rubbed her arm while walking after the short German witch thinking of how to apologize to her.
Kai's quarters, Luna Nova
I wonder why it's so loud in there. I can hear them down the hallway. Ursula took a dep breath and knocked on the door. She noticed that it got instantly quiet behind the door then heard a commotion before the door opened.
"Ursula, -" Akko stopped when she took in her mate. "Wow uh…fuck you look good."
"ATSUKO! Language!"
Akko looked behind her. "You will understand in a second otosan. It was totally….OI!"
Akko was interrupted by the door opening wider with a very handsome red-haired man standing next to her. His skin was tanned from all his time spent outside and his intelligent red eyes looked deep into the twin pair in front of him. "Hello Chariot."
Ursula dropped to the ground in shock. Akko glared at him before going to her mate and gathering her in her arms. "Great going Adél. I told you to at least let her in the door before bombarding her." She picked Ursula up bridal style and walked back into Kai's rooms with Adélard following behind her. Akko seeing the distress on her mates face and makes an executive decision. With purpose in her step, she walks to the balcony before facing her family. "Be right back! Dinner is ready. Kano, take care of them. I have importance business to attend to." Akko jumps over the bannister with Ursula in her arms. Adélard runs to the balcony and sees them flying off into the distance on a broom.
Shiro walks to Adélard and lays a hand on his shoulder. "Give her some time, Atsuko will make sure she is well and bring her back when she is ready. Come, Kano will be serving dinner." Adélard lets out a sigh and makes his way over to the dining table, his mind on the women who fled from his presence.
Leyline, Unknown location
Akko was having an internal debate on where to land while constantly keeping an eye on the woman in her arms. Where can we go? I think I took the Eastern Leyline. Hmmm we could go home. The Japan drop off is fairly close if I remember correctly. Why am I acting like I didn't just take this same path 5 days ago? Akko groaned and brought one hand to her face. Has it really only been 5 days? "Fuck this is too much." She looks down at her mate in her arms and tightens her hold on her. She feels a squeeze on her arm and she slows down the broom.
"Ursula? Are you okay?"
"Can you call me Chariot please? I want to be the real me right now."
Akko nods. "Sure Chariot, are you okay?" She brings the broom to a complete stop, hovering in place. "Wait, don't make sudden movements. We are on a broom right now." The hands around her arm hold on tighter. "It was the fastest way to remove you from the situation. I'm sorry. I know how much you don't like brooms."
Chariot lifts her head bringing her eye level with Akko. "I don't dislike brooms. I don't like not being in control." She brings one hand to rest on Akko's cheek and gives her a sad smile. "But I trust you." She removes her hand and settles herself in front of Akko, leaning back against her chest. "Where are we going?"
Akko wraps her arms around Chariot's stomach and slowly starts moving through the Leyline again. "I thought I would take you home."
"Japan?" Chariot quickly swiveled around.
"Whoa hey! Small stick here is keeping us alive." Chariot blushed and returned to her former position. "Yes, Japan. Is that okay?" She feels the nod against her chest more than she hears the answer. "Okay, well this is where I was planning on bringing you after dinner, but we will just move plans up a little. The Leyline drops us in Tokyo. Then it is a 5-ish minute ride to where I want to take you." She felt a vibration in her pocket and removed the device. "Looks like they were able to accommodate my last-minute request. So here we go, dropping out of the Leyline." Akko braces them for the abrupt shift in momentum. She pauses to look over Shibuya and gives a sigh of relief. "I'll bring you here one day. But we aren't staying here." She guided the broom to the northeast and cast an invisibility spell over them.
Chariot took in the sites along their route into the city. She noticed that as they got closer to the tree line, that the area began looking familiar. "Akko? This seems familiar." She felt the deep sigh along her back.
"It should Chariot. I have a good reason for it. I promise." Akko lowered them down into a clearing of trees and held out a hand for Chariot to use to dismount. "Just trust me, okay?" She offers Chariot a smile and tightens her hold on the hand in hers. "Come on. It's this way." Akko began walking further into the park.
Chariot could feel a large amount of magic ahead of them, but looking forward couldn't see anything other than trees. "Akko, are you sure this is the place?" She shivered as the magic washed over her and looked on in horror as a stage was made visible. She stopped walking, causing Akko to be yanked back. "We can't be here." She started shaking her head and tearing up. "Akko, why are we here?"
Akko took in the devastation on her mate's face. "I promise. I would never bring you here to hurt you Chariot." She brought the woman into a comforting embrace. "Please just trust me." She pulls back to kiss Chariot's forehead then brings one hand under her chin to look her in the eyes. "You are safe here. It is just you and I. But this place is important to us. It is where our story started, and it is where we will take a new step towards our future." Akko stared into the bright red eyes in front of her and waited for her acceptance before gently pulling away, grabbing Chariot's hand, and walking towards the stage.
"When I was 5 years old, nii-san told me about a young witch who was making waves in the magical community." Row by row passed them by and all Akko could think of was the magical show she watched as a young girl so long ago. "He had managed to catch your show in England and was blown away by your brilliance and sheer command of magic. I had heard of you before from a few of the other mage's children that I went to school with, but what really drew me to you was the memory of your show that nii-san let me see." They paused at the base of the stage and gazed at it together. Akko pulled Chariot towards the staircase to the side. "From that moment on, I was hooked. I had my dad buy each piece of merch he could find of yours. All the trading cards. The little costume. And even a plushie of Alcor. I knew that I wanted to meet you at all costs." At the top of the stairs, Chariot noticed a blanket and basket in the center of the stage. Akko tightened her hold on the hand. "Come on, this way. Oh, so for my 6th birthday, my dad procured tickets to your show. I was over the moon! I wouldn't stop talking about you." Akko chuckled and motioned for Chariot to sit, sinking down on a cushion across from her. "I drove otosan and niisan crazy…okasaan too. That was when everything was okay. So, at the end of June, we made our way here from Hokkaido. I sat right over there." Akko pointed to the end of the third row. "The moment you came on stage, you stole my heart. Even at the age of 6, I knew that I wanted to grow up and try my hardest to be a witch worthy of you. Your show was breathtaking. The way that magic danced and just shone when you were doing your show…I couldn't look away. At the end of the show after the lights from the animals faded and it looked like lights were coming from the audience towards you. I was still entranced. I never once thought you were doing anything other than allowing us to become part of your final act. I stayed in that spot for hours after the show was over. My kid brain trying so hard to make plans to meet you in the future. Niisan was the one who came and took me home." Akko started chuckling here. "I remember when we walked out of the transport circle he all but threw me into my dad's arms, complaining that I wouldn't shut up. Otosan stayed with me all night listening as I told him my plans. I fell asleep with a smile on my face."
Chariot had tears streaming down her face. "Why are you telling me this? You already told me what happened"
Akko reached across the blanket and wiped the tears from her face. "Because I want you to stop blaming yourself for what happened to me love. You deserve to move on. I am telling you this to offer you closure." Akko grabbed the edge of Chariots cushion and pulled her close enough to wrap an arm around her shoulders and offer her shoulder to Chariot to lean her head on. "Where was I? Oh right. Dun dun dun…the next day." A watery chuckle came from the woman next to her and Akko smiled. "I woke up the next day eager to try to recreate some of the tricks I had seen you cast. But when I tried to conjure water for my bath. Nothing happened." Akko paused and tightened her hold on her mate. "Admittedly, I freaked out. I didn't understand why my magic, who I'd always treated as my best friend, didn't want to play with me anymore. I manually got water and brushed my teeth, then grabbed my broom and tried flying, only to fall onto the ground. I dropped the broom and ran to my dad's study. Him, niisan and okasaan where in the office talking. Well more otosan and niisan were sitting and okasaan was yelling. But I burst in saying my magic wasn't working and everything stopped. Otosan came and picked me up taking me away from okasaan. He asked me what I meant and to redo what I tried earlier. I tried to conjure water into a cup on the desk and nothing happened. Okasaan exclaimed that she couldn't sense magic from me anymore. Then lots of yelling happened." Akko paused and removed a carafe of tea from the basket before pouring herself a cup and taking a sip. "What I had interrupted was my parents arguing over my magical education. My mother wanted me to go with her and my father wanted me to continue in the school his family oversaw. That was when okasaan told otosan that I was never his to train. As her daughter I belonged to her and my life was hers to do with it how she saw fit. I remember flames then silence. Niisan was infront of me when the light died down, otosan was breathing heavily, and okasaan was nowhere to be found."
"Akko I did this, I ruined your family." Sobs erupted from Chariot.
"Hey, hey Chariot. I promise you didn't ruin anything. Okasaan was…is…definitely is crazy. You saved me from a potential situation I would still be in today. The prophecy that I told you that first night was already into effect. I needed to overcome these trials in order to be the witch that I am now." Akko's other hand rose to eye level and she snapped her fingers and fire erupted from her hand; another snap and water. She willed her magic into the air and fairy lights formed all around the two women. "I was able to reactivate those magical circuits and overcome my trial. I am strong Chariot. Much stronger than most. I brought you here so you can let go of your guilt. I am recovered, I am strong, I have my magic and I am ready to move forward in my life with you right next to me. You are welcome to be Ursula Callistis for as long as you want, but I want to love you…if you will let me."
"Do you really forgive me?"
"I forgave you the minute I found out what happened Chariot. All I knew as a kid was that you needed my magic and I was okay with giving it to you." Akko moved her free hand to hover over Chariots heart. "I feel it there within you. And it is the most comforting feeling. I feel complete when I am with you."
Chariot froze. "Are you going to take back your magic?"
Akko thought for a moment then shook her head. "No I have no need for it. I am strong without it. I don't want to know what would happen if I removed it from you. What's mine is yours right?" Akko took the time to look over the woman leaning against her. Her eyes kept getting drawn to the leather pants that adorned her legs. Akko cleared her throat. "Uh Chariot, I think we should talk about what caused us to leave home."
Chariot untangled herself from Akko and sat up. "Did you tell Adél that I was at school?"
Akko shook her head and opened her mouth to talk then closed it frowning. "I noticed that you went shopping in the village."
"What does that have to do with Adél and I?"
"Did you happen to go to a shop owned by a man named Julian?"
"I did." Chariot hesitated "…Ms. Cavendish recommended it as the best shop in the village."
"DIANA?!" Akko shouted. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell. How the hell? You know what, that's not important. Inside the shop, did you mention to Julian who you really are?"
Chariot blushed. "I did. Ms. Cavendish wanted to have the school pay for my new wardrobe, but I couldn't allow that to happen. So, I passed over a bank transfer to pay which happens to be in my real name."
"Uh darling…I mean this in the nicest most nonjudgmental way possible, but how are you receiving your pay from Luna Nova if you still have your family name on your bank account?"
Chariot's blush deepened. "I would take my pay to the bank and give it directly to my account manager. Here in Europe, our account managers have a sworn vow to protect our identity and since they manage multiple family accounts, it wasn't too suspicious."
Akko had a look of wonder on her face. "That is sooooo cool. Something right out of a spy movie. Oh!" Akko fiddled with the pockets on her pants and pulled out a black card handing it to Chariot. "This is yours. It works as a debit card in nonmagical areas, and a small reveal spell will give you the account information for a bank transfer in magical areas." Chariot tried to hand it back. "I insist. I'm sure you were buying a wardrobe thinking about what the future has in store for us. I have money. A lot of money, independent from what I will get from my father's estate and now what I am to receive from the emperor. You, Kano, and I could go on a permanent vacation for millenia and still not put a dent in the account."
"How are you so wealthy?" Chariot takes the card and holds it unsure of what to do with it.
"Well, the emperor would send me on death defying missions every few months. I would claim the bounty. The biggest payout, I got two rewards. 400 billion for the neutralization of Kano…and well Kano himself." Akko rubbed the back of her head. "I don't need all that money and now that I have found you, we can share it. Buy whatever you want. It won't hurt me in any way." She smiled at her mate. "But uh, Julian…he's Adél's partner."
"What?"
"Ha yeahhhh I guess the two of you are more similar than you thought huh?" A punch to her shoulder was the only response she got. "Ow, you wound me. Yeah I'm not sure how he made it to us before you did. Why are you blushing again?"
"I got held up in the hallway by all the whispering about my outfit."
Akko whistled. "I can't say I blame them you look incredible. What prompted the change?"
Akko watched as Chariot shrunk into herself then shook her head and lifted her head high and met Akko's eyes. "I want to be worthy of you."
"Just being you is enough Chariot. I don't need anything more than that. But I am sure this will make you feel much more comfortable. I'm for it. As long as it is what you want, then I am for it. Just know that if you don't want to overhaul your look, I'm okay either way."
"Akko, I used to dress way more risque than I currently am. This is a classy look I think."
"A hot look you mean."
Chariot noticed little hearts in Akko's eyes as she stared at her. She leaned forward into the young witch bringing her face right next to her ear. "Akko focus." She whispered and leaned back as she felt the witch stiffen. Akko looked stunned.
"I'm going to stand up now and walk for a little bit. Be right back."
Chariot laughed as Akko ran off. Since she was left to her own devices, she opened the basket and took stock of the contents before pulling items out and setting it up for a picnic on the stage. Akko arrived back red faced and out of breath just as she was lighting the candle that was included.
"Oh they gave us dinner? Nice" Akko plopped down on her previously abandoned cushion and grabbed a plate. "Thank you for setting up. But please warn me next time you pull a stunt like that. My brain can only handle so much."
"Your brain?" Chariot asks while dividing up the food.
Akko hums in acknowledgement. "I want to preface this with nothing changes between us. And your feelings are your own, okay?" Akko waits for Chariot to nod. "When I took in Kano's magic, something changed. It was like another switch flipped in my body." Akko started playing with the hem of her shirt before feeling a hand cover hers.
"It's okay, I promise."
"Thank you. Um…so how much do you know about Japanese magic?"
"Nothing. I thought that magic had all died in the east."
"I can say with certainty that this is not the case. Publicly, Asia is divided into small countries all independent of one another. Nonmagical people enjoy their idea of independence and identity tied to the locality that they live in. Realistically, Asia is governed by one entity. The magical royal family, which resides in Japan. This designation was granted to us as the land of dragons exists here. There are theories that state all of magic originated with dragons and they bestowed it upon the humans here and as time continued those humans and dragons mated then moved and further populated the surrounding areas. We are all taught to revere dragons, which was why it was such a daunting task to take Kano's magic. After I took his magic and made it home, I was unable to wake for 4 days. No one knew why. But when I woke up, there was this additional presence in me. Like I had a dragon inside of me as well. It was separate from Kano's magic and felt as though it had just woken from a deep slumber. Otosan said it was a delayed inheritance from my mother and now I really know what he meant. Since she is from the royal family, that dragon blood resides in me. That means I have different instincts when it comes to a mate. You were chosen by the Shiny Rod to be my mate and my inner dragon also accepted you. Much like a dragon, I have a long lithe body that is strong, and my desire to protect those which I deem as mine is strong. But I also have a very strong need to make you mine." Chariot gasps and Akko gives a depreciating laugh. "Crazy right? Yeah. So, please if you are not ready or if you do not want this bond, then please please please, do not tease me. I never want to put you in a position where you are uncomfortable around me."
Chariot let out a deep breath and looked at Akko. "So, you have a dragon inheritance." Akko nods. "And that dragon already chose me?" Another nod. "Okay is there anything else I should know?"
"I think you are the most beautiful woman I have ever met inside and out. And I love the new look, but don't be surprised if lots of pranks happen during your classes if something untoward or crass is said about you."
"Noted. Akko you are incredible. Are you sure that I am enough?" Chariot moved closer and lowered her voice.
"Yes. With everything that I am, I believe this to be true." Akko said with sincerity taking in how close her mate was to her.
"Then we will be just fine." Chariot stopped until they were really close together. Akko kept her eyes on the bright red eyes in front of her, before dropping down to her lips then returning to her eyes.
"I never wanted to make you feel like you weren't enough." Akko said bringing a hand to rest on Chariot's cheek.
Chariot's heart thudded, her chest tight. "You never did. But I think we just needed to say it out loud. That we both want this."
Akko gasped and leaned in closer to Chariot, their breath intermingling. The air around them felt charged, as if the universe was waiting for this exact moment. Their lips met softly at first, tentative, as if testing the water, but the warmth of it spread quickly, a slow, sweet unfolding. Akko's hand cupped Chariot's face, fingers trembling just slightly against her skin, as if they had waited forever for this. Chariot's hand rested gently at Akko's waist, grounding them both in the moment. The kiss was slow, unhurried, and full of the kind of tenderness that only comes after sharing something vulnerable and true.
When they finally pulled away, neither of them spoke for a while, content to simply be in the shared quiet, the only sound the soft rustling of the trees in the evening breeze. Akko smiled, her forehead resting against Chariot's.
"I think this makes it all worth it," Akko whispered.
Chariot smiled back, her fingers caressing Akko's side. "Yeah, me too"
And for the first time in quite some time, both women felt content with what the future will bring them. For they both knew no matter what, they would face it together.
Akko pulls back and offers her a smile. "Are you ready to go back? I'm sure your brother would want to get to know you."
Chariot let out a shakey breath. "I'm not sure he wants anything to do with me."
"Chariot, do you know what he goes by publicly?" At the shake of her head Akko gave her another smile. "Adélard Chariot."
"Chariot…? He used my name as his last name? Why?"
"He told us that he wanted to make it easy for you to find him. His big sister who spent her whole childhood protecting him." Akko grabbed her hand and brought it to her lips to kiss it. "He's missed you. I am sorry that he bombarded you. But I think you should give him a chance, who knows what good will come of it."
Chariot nodded. "Okay, let's eat then head back." The women settled into a content silence, with the sounds of silverware scraping along the plates being the only noises heard. Shy glances were exchanged over the course of dinner, but quiet happiness was the overwhelming feeling both women had.
Akko finished her plate first and started packing up. "Take your time, I'm just going to pack up and let my staff know that we will be done shortly."
Chariot wiped her mouth before speaking. "Staff? What do you mean staff?"
Akko looked down embarrassed. "Well, when you were declared a 'criminal' this place was shut down because they weren't sure if the venue was a factor in what happened. About 4 years ago, it was released to be used again and I put a bid in with Ueno Park, to purchase the location." Akko looked around at the venue with a smile. "I wanted you to decide what was to become of this spot. We can reopen the venue for magical use. We can reopen the stage for nonmagical folk to use. Or we can tear it down and turn it into something else. I'm leaning more towards the last option, but ultimately the decision is yours."
"Akko, you were eleven when that happened."
"Yes, I am aware."
"Just who are you?"
"I had to grow up quickly Chariot. Magical training was hard. There were a couple of times I thought I was going to die on the missions the emperor sent me on. Both of us have had to face unspeakable things at a young age, but I would do it all again. Because each and every decision brought me here to this moment…with you."
Chariot pushed her empty plate away from her and leaned back to look at Akko. "What would you turn this place into if we tear it down?"
Akko paused, "I have always wanted my own café and greenhouse. So maybe build a greenhouse and have an attached café? It would be open to both magical and nonmagical folks, but the greenhouse would have a warded area for magical plants. I've always loved plants and Adél says they are fundamental for learning the healing arts. But I do think that is what I would do"
Chariot hummed in agreement. "That sounds like a wonderful plan. How soon does a decision need to be made?"
Akko finished packing up the basket and sent a quick text on her phone. She extended a hand out to Chariot to help her up which she accepted. Akko pulled Chariot up against her and flashed a smile before giving her a soft peck on her lips. "There is no rush, I have to make it through this year without any incidents, then maybe next year we can settle on an idea and put it into place?" Chariot murmured her agreement still in a daze from the short kiss she received. Akko released her but kept a hold on her hand, leading them back to the clearing so they could head back to Luna Nova. Akko grabbed her broom from up against the tree she put it and turned back to Chariot. "Are you ready?"
Chariot looked at the broom then back at Akko shaking her head. "I don't want this to end," Chariot murmured, her voice a low rasp.
In that moment, the world seemed to collapse into the small space between them. The wind stilled. The birds ceased their songs. There was only the heartbeat of the forest, and their hearts—to loud, too fast. Her lips parted slightly, the air between them charged, fragile.
And then as if some invisible force brough them together, Akko's lips found hers. It was soft at first, tentative—a question, a hesitation. But then Chariot responded, her hands finding their way behind her neck, pulling her in closer as their bodies seemed to melt together. The kiss deepened, urgent, raw, as if they both knew this was the last moment of quiet they would get.
The kiss carried all the things they hadn't said, all the feelings they are too shy to say. It was more than desire—it was the realization that something irreversible had taken place. And in that moment, nothing else mattered but the warmth of their lips against each other, the synced beating of their hearts, and the one place in the world where their story started looming in the forest behind them.
Chariot pulled back first, flushed and played with the hair along the back of Akko's neck. "Do we have to go back?"
Akko kissed her forehead and sighed. "I am afraid we have to. There are so many things we need to get done. But we will do it together, I swear it." She felt Chariot nod and placed another kiss on her forehead before stepping out of the warm embrace and mounting her broom. "Let's go face the music shall we?"
Kai's quarters, Luna Nova
"How can she be so reckless? Not even a message to say 'oh niisan we are okay and safe'…NO! Nothing! Instead, I have to pace around this damn living room waiting just like everyone else to find out if she's okay." Kai says speaking loudly to himself while alternating between glancing at the balcony and glaring at Adélard. "And you!" He finally turned to Adélard getting right up to his face and not moving, anger written on his face. "Just what the fuck were you thinking just showing up?"
"Okay first of all Kai, your language is appalling. I do believe you have been spending way too much time with Ms. Kagari." At the intensified glare, Adélard threw his hands up in surrender. "Honestly, I was thinking that my sister who I have been searching for for 10 years is close to me and I want to see her. I want to hug her because I have missed her." Kai felt Akko's magic and knew they were close, so he released some of his anger but never relaxed his stance.
"You've missed her huh? Then why couldn't you find her?" Kai asked playing the bad guy.
"She's a trained assassin Kai. She could be standing in this room right now and if she didn't want us to know she is here then we wouldn't"
"Oh actually, Akko is the one who had our presence erased, not me. I can only cover for myself." Chariot spoke up from just inside the balcony. At the mass shift in attention, Chariot acknowledged the one person she has been dying to see for a decade. "Hello Adélard" No other words were spoken as the man launched himself across the room into the arms of his sister. Tears fell from Chariots face as she held her weeping brother, happy to just be in his presence once more. She let Akko redirect them to an empty sofa in the living room and adjusted the young man to be more comfortable as he wept.
Kai came over to Akko, looking her up and down to make sure she is okay. "Usagi-chan…where. The. Fuck. Were. You?"
Akko completely unbothered by the angry man in front of her, kept her eyes on her mate. "Home."
"HOME?!"
"You went home Atsuko? But the servants never activated the orb." Shiro stood up to join his daughter and apprentice.
"No otosan, well, we went home, but not home home. I took her to Ueno Park. We talked. She got closure. We ate dinner. We chatted about what to do with the place. And now we are here." Akko smiled as she watched Chariot wipe away Adélard's tears and softly speak to him. Seeing that they were okay, she shifted her focus to the two men. "We are okay, otosan, niisan. I am sorry for worrying you." Akko offered them a deep bow. "It won't happen again. I take full responsibility for my actions."
"Akko—" Shiro places a hand on his apprentice's shoulder and shakes his head.
"We hold responsibility in this as well Atsuko. I am relieved that both of you are well. Next time you feel the need to escape, please just send a message so we know you are safe."
"Yes otosan."
"Good, now Atsuko, Miranda has a proposal for you. I want you to hear her out completely before you make a decision. Can you do that for me?"
"Must be serious. Okay otosan. I can do that." Kano flew over to his master and draped himself along he shoulders. Akko gave his scales a little pet. "Sorry for leaving you little dragon. It was a last minute emergency."
"I could feel that you were safe. Niisan just wouldn't listen to me." Kano said flicking his tail in Kai's direction.
Kai groaned in frustration. "Forgive me for being concerned about her you overgrown lizard."
Kano's head shot up. "You take that back!"
"Make me." Kai raised an eyebrow in the dragon's direction before turning and running away. Kano quickly flew behind him.
Akko and Shiro exchanged grins as they watched the scene of Kai trying to outrun Kano play out. They were still smiling when Miranda made her way to them.
"My, my what did Kai do to earn Kano's ire this time?"
"He called him an overgrown lizard."
Miranda shook her head at her son's foolishness. "Some day the lad will learn. Akko, I take it your father mentioned my wanting to speak with you?"
"Yes Auntie"
"Most excellent. Now let us take a seat at the dining table so that we are a little more comfortable then just standing." The trio made their way to the table and settled in seats across from each other. "Now Akko, I understand that you are young and have a full life ahead of you, but how would you like to be an instructor here?" She noticed Akko's eyes getting wide. "This would offer you the flexibility to search for the words and uncover the trials of the Claiomh Solais. But I think most importantly, you would get private quarters. You would also have unlimited and unrestricted access to the library and any resources we have here." Miranda holds up a hand when she sees her niece begin to respond. "I want you to take a couple of days to truly think it over. We are moving up the broom race before starting classes." She moves closer to Akko and takes one of her hands in her own. "I worry for your future Akko. Not because I do not think you aren't equipped to handle it, but because you have more trials ahead of you than anyone can imagine. If living your youth is your priority, then we can forget this offer exists. But if you feel like you want to prepare yourself without the constraints of school, then this is how we will manage." She gives Akko a smile and sits back.
Akko slumped back in her chair and crossed her arms. She looked over at the people in the room and gave herself some time to think it over. Looking at Chariot, her decision was made clear. "No need to think about it Auntie, I'd be glad to teach here." She offers a wide smile to her aunt and dad. "One stipulation, I get to pick my own quarters."
Shiro and Miranda exchanged a look. "Did you have a place in mind Atsuko?"
Akko gave her dad a sly look. "Yeah, I want the abandoned groundskeeper house by the greenhouses."
"And how do you know about that house?" Miranda asked leaning her head on one of her hands.
"I went down to the kitchens my first night here and got to talking with the staff there. I made them tea, we had a lovely time. Did you know that your kitchen staff and grounds staff are the same family? Anyway, they told me about the place in case I wanted somewhere to cook uninterrupted. We've been meeting at night for tea there." Akko turned her attention towards Chariot as she saw her walking to the table. "Hey, everything okay?"
Chariot sat in the chair next to Akko and sighed. "For now, yes. It's a start. I'm glad he is well." She looked between Akko, Miranda, and Shiro. "What is going on over here? It looked like the conversation was intense."
"Oh, you know nothing major" She turned to Chariot and laughed. "I'm just going to be a teacher here." She paused to think "And you are moving."
"You are? I am?"
"Yeah, Auntie just asked if I would teach here." Akko's voice took on a dark edge. "And yes, you are going to be with me. I want to be able to protect you at all costs."
Chariot placed a hand on Akko's arm. "You don't have to protect me. I am capable of taking care of myself."
Akko shook her head giving Chariot pleading eyes. "It's not that I don't believe you, it's that I don't trust anyone to remain calm and sane when we tell them who you are. I can guarantee your safety. I've already placed my own wards on the house. We will have separate rooms Chariot. We aren't ready for that step, but I want you with me." Akko dropped her voice so only Chariot could hear her. "My inner beast won't like us being that far apart. I'm close to you in my dorm, but I wouldn't be all the way out there." Kano, I need you to go get Alcor from Chariot's room. Akko began addressing the rest of the people at the table again. She heard Kano flying out the window. "We aren't going to be alone out there otosan, Kano and Alcor will be with us."
"Atsuko, I think I should stay with you, as a precaution." Shiro frowned at his daughter. "Two magical familiars won't be much protection."
"Otosan…are you saying you don't trust me to keep her safe?" Akko's demeaner got dark. The air around her got heavy and charged with her anger. "OW! WHAT THE FUCK KAI!?" Akko yelled holding her head and turning to look at Kai standing behind her with his arm raised.
"No, you magical meathead. Your father is concerned that should something happen, he would be too far to help you. No one here would dare say you can't protect her. I'm quite sure you could battle every person in this room at the same time and still win." Kai inclines his head towards his master. "No disrespect master, mother. But Usagi-chan is quite a force to reckon with. The problem with people coming after you is that we do not know what tricks they are capable of. That is why they are worried. No. Other. Reason." He punctuated every final word with a swat to her head while Akko tried swatting his hands away from her.
Shiro and Miranda were laughing at their antics. "You two truly are siblings. Kai is right Atsuko. I am happy with the plan, but we need measures in place in case anyone is foolish enough to try and attack."
Akko hung her head sheepishly. "Yes otosan." She shoots her head up at the sound of wings. "But before we get into that battle plan, there is something we need to take care of." Akko watched as Alcor perched on the corner of Chariots chair. "Alcor…how long have you been trapped as a bird?" His surprised chirp was the only response. The room had become totally silent. "Yes, I noticed that first night I was here." Akko could feel the stares. "Okay now why is everyone looking at me?"
Chariot reaches us to pet her familiar. "Alcor, you are a human?"
Yes, my dear. I've been waiting for you to notice.
Akko puts a finger on Chariot's mouth. "Let me project his thoughts so we can all have a productive conversation." She looks at Alcor seeking permission from the bird. He nods his head and Akko places a hand over his head pushing magic into him, willing it to project his thoughts to the room. "That should have worked. Alcor can you explain what happened?
Most certainly young one. The gentle timbre could be heard around the room causing everyone to look in wonder at Akko.
"Yeah yeah I know, I'm great. But can we focus on what's important right now?" She pets Alcor on the head. "Please continue."
It was an ordinary day. I had been tinkering with a new spell. An enhanced transformation spell. One that would allow me to transform aspects of my body to match the desired animal. As a mage who specializes in wind magic, an aviary form seemed to be the best match. Trialing the spell on my arms let me experience what it was like to have wings. I never tested flight, but it was an incredible feeling nonetheless. I am afraid this is an instance of magic gone wrong. As a rule of thumb, you are to give your magic time between transformations. I was excited about my success and wanted to continue while I had the drive. One transformation turned into two, then three, then kept going and going until I was about to finish my fortieth transformation. When I attempted to transform back into completely human…everything went black. Young miss, is there anyway to project my memory? Alcor fixed Akko with a sad stare.
"I'll do my best."
Flashback 15 years ago
The small figure on the ground slowly came to. To him, the world had never seemed so vast, nor so foreign. What have I become? My mind raced, sharp as ever, but my thoughts felt scattered like leaves in the wind.
The first moment I felt the change, I was no longer a person, no longer a master of my own fate. My body had contracted, reshaped. My limbs—fingers that once wove spells with the precision of a seasoned weaver—pulled into delicate, feathery wings. My skin turned to feathers, soft and warm, but alien. The world seemed to expand and shrink at once, as if the very air I breathed had become both too think and too thin.
I looked down in horror, my mind screaming at the body that was no longer mine. The weight of the world was suddenly different—heavier, lighter, and utterly beyond my control. My sharp eyes—once adept at reading the smallest symbols, the smallest signs—now scanned the world through a bird's narrow perspective.
I tried to speak, to cry out, but the sound that came from my throat was not my own. A high, thin whistle, like a bird's call. I flapped my wings in frantic panic, but the motion was not my command. The world, once under my control, had turned chaotic and vast. The spell has worked, but the cost…the cost was my humanity.
How long did I fight it? I lost track of time. I circled the sky for what felt like days, weeks, months. I had no way to measure time, only to feel its passage in the aching pulling of my wings. The ground below me was nothing but a distant memory—unreachable, distant as the life I had once known.
At first, I raged against it, desperately searching for a way to reverse the spell, but the magic…it was too strong. Each effort I made to shift back into my human form only spent me spiraling out of control. I crashed into trees, into rivers, and the pain of my fractured wings became as familiar as the sound of the wind in my ears.
But there came a point when I no longer sought to escape. Perhaps it was hunger, or perhaps it was the surrender of something deeper—acceptance. I stopped fighting the wings, stopped fighting the air beneath me, and began to understand the rhythm of the world through new eyes. The winds became my language, the currents of air my guide. The farthest horizons—once so distant, so unreachable—now seemed within my grasp.
In this new, strange body, I found a kind of peace. I no longer yearned for the touch of the earth beneath my feet. I had become one with the sky, with the ever-moving clouds. In the stillness of flight, there was a strange freedom that had never been mine in my old life, bound as I was by the limits of flesh and magic
Yet sometimes, when the moon rises full and the night is silent, I can still remember the feeling of my own hands, grasping the air. And I wonder if I am still the mage I once was, or if I have become something else entirely.
But there was something that pulled me back to civilization. A calling of magic so reminiscent of days past. It brought me to a back alley in Germany. Small enough that even a pedestrian would miss it. In the alley, the magic got stronger, until I found myself in front of a half open window. Jumping into the shack, there was a young woman radiating the most warming magic. I hopped closer to her, feeling the magic seeping into my body. I felt the bond settle in place and words flooded my mind.
I'm not worthy. I should just die. No one would miss me. I'm a criminal and a fraud. It would be better to end it all.
These devastating words shocked me. For how could this witch who has been blessed with so much magic be a criminal.
Please don't die, master. I don't want to be left alone. I thought down the newly formed bond. I watched as that red hair shot up in surprise.
"Who said that?" The young witch looked around her small space terror in her eyes.
I gazed at her with sadness and hopped into her direct line of sight. It was I master. Your magic called me here. If you leave me, then I will be all alone in this world too.
"My…magic? My magic called to you?" She reached out to touch me. Almost as if to make sure I was real. I let out a little happy song in response. Her smile was radiant as she pet my head. "What are you? You don't look like any bird I've never seen before." Her hand moved to my chest tracing something there. "Is this specific to your species? I should go to the library and see!" She quickly got up and rushed to the door. "What am I to call you?" She asked looking over at me from the doorway.
Whatever you wish Master.
Her face scrunched up in thought. I have to admit, she is much younger than I would have expected. What could have caused her to be all alone with those kinds of thoughts.
"Alcor." She smiled shyly. "I'll call you Alcor."
Alcor? I spread my wings and flapped, feeling how the name energized me. A fitting name master. Who do I have the pleasure of meeting?
"My name is Chariot. Chariot Du Nord. But I am going by Ursula Callistis. I promise to fill you in once I get back from the library! Oh Alcor! Thank you for finding me."
One more blinding smile was sent my way before she disappeared.
Present time
I have been in this form ever since and have been protecting my young master since I found her. Alcor nudged his head against Chariot's cheek.
Akko glanced around the table at all its occupants. Tears were streaming down a couple of faces, and she could see the anger in her father's eyes. She reached across the table and grabbed his hand. "It is okay otosan. I will fix this." She squeezed his hand then removed it to give her full attention to Alcor. "Alcor, you have been a dear friend to Chariot all these long years. But I do think it's time to make you human again." She looked at Chariot. "Making him human again has been one of the things I have been researching. The only thing is…well your bond will be gone."
Alcor gave an unhappy twill. Young one, I will not be leaving my master's side. Human or not, aware or not, she has saved me. I will live the rest of my days in her debt. Wherever she is, I will be too.
Chariot reached up her hands and pulled Alcor into her lap, giving him one last hug, before standing up and placing him in an empty space in the dining room. "Akko, do it. Please, help him."
Akko nodded her head and stood to face Alcor. She held out a hand and closed her eyes, before abruptly opening them. "Uh…niisan? You wouldn't happen to have some spare clothes, would you? I imagine 10-ish years as a bird, and he might be very…not dressed." Laughter was all the response she got.
"Just do your thing Usagi-chan, I will keep Alcor decent." Kai responded still chuckling.
"Right" Akko closed her eyes and let her magic build up. She heard gasps behind her as her magic kept building and building, muttering spells under her breath the whole time. Please let this work. She raised one hand and opened her eyes, as she shot her magic towards Alcor.
The force of magic slammed into the tiny body causing him to fall backwards. The crow managed to get back up and shake off the disorientation before a cloud of smoke covered his body.
"ALCOR!" Chariot yelled running over to him, only to be stopped by Akko.
"He is not in pain. Give him a little bit." Akko fought Chariot's hands trying to release herself. "Chariot. Calm down." She said firmly and turned the woman to face her. "I would never hurt Alcor. I know how much he means to you. But the magic needs a little time to work. The cloud, I added so there wouldn't be a very naked man in the middle of the room." The cloud started to dissipate from the top down. Everyone watched in bated breath as luxurious, long gray hair came into view. A lithe but muscled body was next. "Oh, he's quite tall. Nice." Akko muttered to no one in particular. She let go of Chariot so that she could go to her familiar.
"…Alcor?" Chariot questioned reaching out to him. He turned with tears streaming down his face.
"I'm human again." He laughed to himself as Chariot stared at him in disbelief.
"You've really been a man trapped as a bird this whole time? Why didn't you tell me?" She watched as he snapped his fingers and a blanket covered him.
"I was resigned to my fate as a crow forever." He reached up and cupped Chariots cheek. "Thank you for taking such good care of me and for being my family." He offered her a small smile. "I do hope you will let me stay not as your familiar, but as your family now." He still had tears streaming down his face when Chariot engulfed him in a hug.
The remainder of the occupants watched the heartfelt scene. Kano flew over and gave Akko a high five, while Shiro looked at his daughter in wonder.
Kai and Adélard stood a little off to the side and looked at each other. "Are we not going to talk about the relatively attractive naked older man who has Usagi-chan's mate in a hug?"
Akko snapped her fingers, and Kai was drenched in water. "Way to ruin the moment, Kai." Akko said never taking her eyes off of her mate. She watched as Chariot and Alcor stopped hugging before her father swooped in and conjured clothes for Alcor to put on. He showed him to the bathroom, and Chariot made her way back to Akko's side.
"I'm sorry for doubting you." Chariot said sadly.
Akko just smiled. "You didn't doubt me. I could feel your emotions. You were scared, which I understand. But I would never hurt Alcor. He is a legend!" She watched as her father made him was over to them. "Otosan, I would be honored to have you stay with us. I think with the magical capabilities between you, Chariot, and I that we would be fairly safe. With Alcor and Kano, there is extra protection." Akko moved to the cold cupboard in Kai's kitchen and pulled out two dishes. "But for now, I am very tired and would like to eat dessert. Banana pudding!" She showed the rest of the room.
"Atsuko, we need to talk about the magic you just did." Shiro said seriously.
Akko sighed. "And we will otosan, I promise. You can grill me about it later, but right now. Let's just celebrate the new NEW members of our family. Our conversation can wait til tomorrow…after the broom race!" Akko happily exclaimed.
"Akko, you know staff can't participate in the race, right?" came the mirth filled response from Miranda.
"Awwwww Auntie…please?" Akko said wide eyed at her aunt, who just shook her head in response. The rest of the night was filled with laughter and delight as stories were exchanged and the large family settled into comfortable chatter. But like most things, all good things must come to an end.
A/N: Soooooooooooooo that's all the setup I needed, and we will continue on with the progression of the words and everything else. There is going to be time skipping, but I do have a vision forward.
