The sun has just begun to set, casting a soft golden glow over the academy grounds. Fie had just finished up some personal errands and was on her way back to the dorm when she spotted Laura standing by the courtyard, adjusting her outfit. Fie slowed her pace, her curiosity piqued.
Laura, dressed in full knight armor, looked the part of a fierce warrior. Her shining armor gleamed in the fading light, and the way she moved with poise and grace made it hard to believe she wasn't actually on the battlefield. A replica sword not unlike her usual one was slung at her side, and she seemed deeply focused as she adjusted the pieces of her costume.
Fie raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms as she approached, a smirk forming on her face.
"What's up, Laura?" Fie asked, her voice light and teasing as she leaned against a nearby pillar.
Laura, who hadn't noticed Fie approaching, jumped slightly at the sound of her voice. She quickly turned around, her face brightening with a smile. "Oh, Fie! You startled me."
Fie chuckled softly, her gaze falling on Laura's armor again. "What's all this about? You look like you're preparing for battle."
Laura's smile softened, and she straightened up, adjusting a part of her armor. "Well, in a sense, I am." She paused for a moment, as if gathering her thoughts. "I'm helping some of the children from the church with a play they're putting on. I'm playing the role of the 'evil knight.'"
Fie raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "An evil knight, huh? I have to admit, I didn't think you'd play the villain."
Laura laughed softly, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "Yes, it's quite a stretch for me, but I wanted to help them. They've been practicing for weeks now, and they're so excited about the play." She shifted slightly in her armor, looking both amused and slightly uncomfortable. "It's a bit of a different role than I'm used to, but I'm happy to be a part of it."
Fie took a moment to really look at her. Laura was still beautiful, even in the costume, and there was something striking about the contrast between her usual dignified demeanor and the concept of her playing a villain.
"Ah, I see now," Fie said, crossing her arms as she gave a nod of approval. "You look dashing as a knight, Laura."
Laura blinked, surprised at the compliment, and her cheeks flushed a little. "Th-thank you, Fie," she stammered.
Fie nodded approvingly. "I'm sure you'll make a great evil knight," she teased, though there was an underlying warmth in her voice.
For a brief moment, the two of them stood in comfortable silence. The evening air was cool, and the last rays of sunlight were slowly fading behind the academy's grand towers. It was a rare quiet moment, just the two of them sharing this simple exchange.
After a beat, Fie hesitated for a moment, then looked at Laura with a slightly more serious expression. "Hey, would it be okay if I came to watch the play?"
Laura's eyes widened in surprise.
"I'd be happy if you came, Fie," she said, her voice soft and sincere. "It would mean a lot to the kids to have more people watch and having you there would be great."
Fie's smirk returned as she gave a little shrug. "Well, if you're gonna look so dashing, I might as well see it for myself. Plus, I'm curious about Laura the Evil Knight."
Laura's smile widened, her eyes sparkling with appreciation. "I'll make sure to give you a memorable performance."
Fie made her way to the small auditorium in the academy, finding a spot near the front to sit and get a good view of the stage. It was a simple setup, with homemade decorations and a small stage for the children to perform on. As the room filled with other students and staff, Fie noticed a few familiar faces in the audience. She scanned the crowd until her eyes found Laura, who was standing backstage, ready to take the stage.
Fie settled into her seat, folding her arms across her chest and leaning back comfortably. She hadn't expected much, but as the children began their play, she quickly found herself engrossed in the performance. The kids were energetic, and their enthusiasm was contagious. When Laura finally made her entrance, dressed as the 'evil knight,' Fie couldn't help but chuckle. The contrast between Laura's usual elegance and the villainous role was striking.
Laura's portrayal of the evil knight was over-the-top, with exaggerated villainous gestures and dramatic monologues, and Fie found herself quite entertained. Despite the play's lighthearted nature, Laura threw herself into the role with full commitment, and it was clear she was having fun with it.
As the play reached its conclusion, Fie clapped enthusiastically along with the rest of the audience. When the curtain came down, Laura appeared in front of the crowd, bowing humbly. She caught Fie's gaze from across the room and gave her a small, knowing smile.
Fie smiled back, giving her a thumbs-up, and as the audience began to disperse, she made her way backstage to meet Laura.
"Well, that was quite the performance," Fie said as she walked up to Laura, who was taking off her costume.
Laura grinned. "I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun to put together, and the kids were so excited." She paused, looking at Fie with a fond expression. "Thank you for coming, Fie. It really meant a lot."
Fie shrugged casually, trying to hide the warmth in her chest. "No problem. It was fun. You were great. You all were."
The two of them stood there for a moment, their conversation fading as they shared a quiet moment. When she closed her eyes, Fie knew…she knew that later, alone in her room, she'd be shouting villainous monologue in an over-the-top voice.
