Chapter 19- The Meaning of Forgiveness

After her discharge from the hospital, Shanan found solace in a cocoon of care tenderly crafted by Naruto and Sasuke, the two people she cherished most. They devoted themselves to her recovery with unwavering dedication, attending to her every need.

Their days blended into a peaceful routine, filled with Naruto's infectious laughter and Sasuke's quiet strength.

However, subtle undertones of tension began to seep in as Sasuke's temper seemed to shorten with each passing day, courtesy of the curse mark's insidious influence. He grew irritable, snapping at trivial things, his frustration simmering just below the surface.

Shanan sensed the shift, concern etching itself on her face as even Naruto's optimism faltered, replaced by unease. The once-harmonious balance teetered, leaving her worried.

Her usual mediating role was compromised by her debilitating headaches, often leaving her powerless to soothe Sasuke's storms. Yet, Naruto stepped forward, displaying an unexpected depth of empathy, recognizing the curse mark's grip on Sasuke.

With intuitive tact, Naruto sidestepped potentially explosive situations, prioritizing harmony. His thoughtful gestures preserved the delicate balance of their bond, ensuring Shanan's comfort and safeguarding the unshakeable brotherhood he shared with Sasuke. She admired Naruto's discernment, his ability to pick battles wisely was a trait that deeply impressed her.

However, her patience wore thin with Sasuke's persistent impatience. Despite her deep love for Sasuke, his harsh words sometimes struck a sensitive chord, echoing painful memories of Naruto's vulnerable younger years.

Naruto, now more assertive, stood his ground when Sasuke crossed boundaries, contrasting his usual tact. Though he empathized with Sasuke's struggle, he wouldn't tolerate overstepped limits. Their bickering, once light-hearted and playful, transformed into intense and personal clashes, uncharacteristic of Sasuke.

This afternoon's argument had reached a boiling point. With a deep breath, Naruto delivered a parting blow: "I get that you're not yourself, and you'll always be my brother, but eat shit, Sasuke."

Sasuke's eyes blazed with fury as the door slammed shut behind Naruto, his instincts screaming to pursue. But Shanan's gentle touch restrained him, her soothing voice calming his rage.

"Sasuke, now is not the time," she cautioned, her eyes locked on his.

His anger still simmered, directed squarely at Naruto, but his affection for Shanan kept his emotions in check. With a controlled breath, he sat down at the table, his gaze fixed on the wooden surface.

Her expression softened, relief washing over her face as she lingered, ensuring his calm was genuine. "I should check on Lee," she said finally. "I promised him a visit."

He nodded silently.

"I'll be back soon," she assured.

With one last glance, she departed, leaving him to his thoughts, his emotions still simmering.

Though she had been wanting to visit Lee, her true intention was to escape the toxic atmosphere of the apartment and clear her mind. Her headaches only intensified her emotional turmoil, making it hard to find the right words to soothe Sasuke's fractured state.

Taking a cue from Naruto's wisdom, she recognized the need for space from Sasuke's curse-mark-fueled outbursts. Perhaps Lee's calm presence would help her gather her thoughts and devise a plan to bring Sasuke back from the darkness that seemed to be pulling him under.

Her footsteps echoed through the streets as she walked to the hospital, her vision blurring. Tears streamed down her face, a relentless deluge of frustration, sadness, and fear overwhelming her. Each step felt heavy, weighed down by concern for the two people she loved most. Self-doubt wrapped around her like a shroud and she wondered if attending the exams could have prevented Sasuke's curse.

"Useless," she whispered, the word piercing her heart.

Feeling like a failure, her steps slowed. Her usual strength and resilience seemed to have abandoned her. The guilt of not being able to heal Sasuke's emotional wounds or shield Naruto from harm suffocated her.

Just as despair threatened to consume her, the hospital came into view. She took a deep breath, wiping away tears. For Lee's sake, she needed to compose herself.

With renewed purpose, she pushed open the hospital doors, eager to visit Lee and offer support during his recovery. Concern for her injured friend propelled her forward.

She halted outside his hospital room, taking a moment to collect herself before gently pushing open the door. Finding him lying in bed, his usual vibrant spirit dampened, her heart ached. His despondency was palpable, a testament to his ongoing struggle.

However, as their eyes met, his face illuminated with a warm smile, dispelling the somber atmosphere. Shanan's own sorrowful expression mirrored his transformation, her tension easing.

She settled beside him, enveloping him in a tight hug.

For moments, they clung to each other, seeking solace in comforting silence.

Finally, they parted, Lee's voice filled with concern and warmth. "I heard that you woke up," he said. "Neji, Guy Sensei, and I were worried sick."

"Yeah, I know... I should've listened to Kakashi," she whispered. "But don't worry about me, Lee. I heard what happened!" Her voice cracked as she took in his broken form.

His warm smile returned, soothing her tears. "Shanan, do not cry for me," he reassured, his tone light. "I gave that guy a pretty good run for his money. He did not know what hit him!"

Through tear-stained laughter, she replied, "I'm sure that's true. Heard you dropped your weights and everyone went crazy."

"It is true! I wish you had been there to see it. Even Neji said that you would have appreciated the dramatic display." His pride sparkled, warmth illuminating his face.

She chuckled, her sadness lingering. "I wish I had too, Lee."

His expression gradually turned somber. His gaze drifted inward, reflections of his ordeal shadowing his eyes.

Admitting weakness never came easily to Lee, but Gaara's brutality haunted him.

"That Gaara guy," he whispered. "He is... inhuman. I do not think that anyone can beat him." His gaze locked onto hers, confusion and sorrow swirling within. "He wanted me to die. And he wanted to be the one to kill me. But even more... he wanted to make sure that I felt unbearable pain before he did."

Her heart ached, tears flowing anew. "Oh, Lee..." she whispered.

His eyes begged for understanding. "How can someone be like that, Shanan?"

She enveloped him in a warm, comforting hug, holding him tightly as tears streamed down his face. "I'm so sorry you had to face someone like that," she whispered.

His body shook against hers.

"He must have a lot of darkness," she continued. "Some people prefer to pull others down into their darkness instead of overcoming it. And it's never the ones who deserve it. You didn't deserve that, Lee. You shine so bright, and Gaara's darkness could never truly dim your light."

As they held each other, the weight of their shared struggles slowly lifted.

Lee's tears subsided, and he held her close. "I appreciate you coming to visit me, Shanan. I missed you. I am glad that you are okay," he added. He sniffled, pulling back to study her face. Concern etched on his features. "But is it true that you are suffering from headaches now?"

She wiped away her tears, nodding solemnly.

"Neji said that he does not understand what is happening with your chakra, but it is probably related to the headaches." His gaze filled with empathy. "How bad are they?" he asked. "Should you have stayed home instead of coming to see me?"

"I needed to see you, Lee. I'm fine. Really."

Though her words were brave, his discerning gaze lingered.

Just then, Neji entered the hospital room, his daily visit coinciding with Shanan's tears drying. He halted, taking in the scene before him: Lee and Shanan, their faces etched with pain and exhaustion.

His gaze narrowed, displeasure creeping onto his face. A deep breath preceded his stern tone. "Shanan, why are you here?"

"I'm happy to see you too, Neji," she replied, sarcastic.

Lee intervened. "She wanted to check on me."

Neji's impatience flashed as he activated his Byakugan, scanning Shanan's chakra. "Well, I can see you're still not back to normal," he stated bluntly. "Really, have you learned nothing from being in a coma for over two weeks?"

Her guilt-ridden expression acknowledged Neji's reprimand, her eyes dipping.

"Neji, go easy. She has missed seeing all of us," Lee said.

"You're just as bad for encouraging her," he chided. His focus returned to Shanan. "You missed your fifteenth birthday. Do you even wish to see the rest of them?"

His words hung in the air, a poignant question.

Her eyes welled up, tears spilling over.

"Neji, do you really think that that is helpful?" Lee asked.

Neji's expression softened, yet his resolve remained unwavering. "Well, yes, I do," he replied.

He sat beside Shanan, crossing his arms. "While I didn't mean to make you cry, you know I'm right. Your recklessness doesn't only hurt you, Shanan. Your fall was very upsetting."

"I know—"

"Hush! I wasn't done speaking." His gaze locked onto hers. "I don't like being sad. And you made me worry about you," he said. "Now that you're awake, I'm mad at you." His brow furrowed, driving his point. "And even though I hate to admit it, I often find myself impressed with your intelligence. Though, you're also a complete idiot," he added, shaking his head. "I know that's intentional – you find it humorous, and others enjoy that about you."

His gaze bore into hers. "But what you did that day was... just plain foolish. And since it doesn't look like anyone else has the guts to tell you this, the burden falls on me." His chest rose and fell as he collected his thoughts.

"Shanan, I've never been so disappointed with anyone in my life." Tears welled in his eyes, but he held them back, fighting emotion. "You could've died," he whispered.

Shanan and Lee sobbed uncontrollably, overcome by Neji's heartfelt reprimand.

She nodded fervently. "I'm so sorry..."

"Stop being so mean, Neji! She did not mean it."

Neji's gaze remained fixed on Shanan, his expression unyielding.

Lee continued. "She will not do it again!"

Neji's sternness softened slightly. "Don't upset me again, Shanan. I don't like it. At least this idiot," he gestured to Lee, "didn't have a choice. He fought bravely to the very end."

Shanan and Lee continued crying, nodding in agreement.

"He did his best," she whispered.

Lee's gratitude poured out. "Thank you for saying that, Neji!"

Neji looked away, his gruff demeanor returning like a shield, guarding his emotions. "Why must I be partnered with such morons?" His gaze returned, softening visibly. "Alright, if you wish to hug me now, I give you permission," he said.

Shanan's arms flew around Neji, her affection unwavering despite his crossed arms. Lee joined, embracing them from behind.

Neji rolled his eyes. "This really is stupid," he muttered. Yet, his resolve crumbled beneath the weight of their connection. Breaking free, he returned their embrace, surrendering. "I worry about you, idiots."

Shanan and Lee smiled through tears, their faces radiant with affection.

"We worry about you too, Neji," they chimed in unison.

"I'm sorry I also missed your birthday," Shanan said.

"Happy late birthday to us, I suppose," he replied.

"Happy late birthday," she echoed.

He gently disentangled from their hug. "Alright, let's stop hugging now," he said. A blush tinged his cheeks.

"We love you, Neji!" she exclaimed.

He raised an eyebrow. "Surely you don't expect me—"

Lee chimed in. "Just say it back to us!"

Shanan's eyes sparkled. "Yeah, do you really wanna ruin our beautiful moment?"

Neji chuckled, his reserve crumbling beneath their affectionate onslaught. "And so the idiots reemerge..." He paused. "Fine. I suppose I do love you both." A warm smile crept onto his face. "God knows why, though!"

Shanan and Lee exchanged a mischievous glance. With nodding synchrony, they conspired against Neji's stoic demeanor.

She reached for his cheek, her fingers poised for the pinch. But he swiftly slapped her hand away.

Lee seized the opportunity, sneaking past Neji's defenses. His fingers darted to poke his nose, catching him off guard.

Neji stood, exasperated. "And with that, I'll see you tomorrow, Lee. Shanan, head home soon and rest," he said. "I mean it!"

With a final, stern glance, Neji departed, leaving Shanan and Lee beaming.

"He loves us!" Her words bubbled with joy.

Lee grinned. "Our grumpy big brother!"

Their laughter filled the hospital room.

Shanan strolled through the hospital halls, her footsteps echoing off the sterile walls as she savored the warmth and lightness that filled her chest. Her visit with Lee and Neji had lifted a weight from her shoulders, and Neji's lecture, though stern, had surprisingly freed her from the burdens of guilt and shame.

As she walked, realization dawned, and with it, a newfound understanding:

She had coddled Sasuke too much, indulging his actions with compassion when perhaps a firmer hand was needed.

She thought that maybe telling him he was being a jerk would help. Especially coming from her. Her mind swirled with possibilities, weighing the potential outcomes. Or worsen things... but it was a chance she had to take. Sasuke's behavior wouldn't change on its own; it was time for a confrontation.

As she approached the exit, she drew a deep breath, feeling a surge of determination. Stepping outside, she was greeted by the warm sunlight, and her resolve strengthened.

Her eyes adjusted to the brightness, and she saw Sasuke standing mere yards from the hospital doors, hands tucked into his pockets. His soft, sad smile pierced her heart. The sunlight danced across his features, contrasting the depths of his sorrow, his eyes reflecting a quiet longing.

Their eyes met, and the air thickened with unspoken emotions.

"Hey," he said quietly.

She approached him with measured steps. "We need to talk, Sasuke."

He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes cast downward. "Yeah, I know," he whispered. "I... went too far today." He swallowed hard, fighting the tremble in his voice, the struggle to maintain composure evident on his face.

Her expression softened and she reached out, her hand brushing his arm.

His apologetic gaze met hers, his eyes filled with remorse. The sunlight seemed to fade, casting a somber shadow over his face. "I thought I was trying to fight it off." Tears escaped, streaming down his face, yet his hands remained tucked away. "I keep saying things without meaning to," he confessed. "I don't even realize what's happened until it's over, and I play it all back." His gaze dropped. "I'm sorry. I've been such an asshole. I know I should apologize to Naruto the most," he whispered. "But I can't find him."

Longing flickered in his eyes, a desire to mend fractured bonds.

Shanan enveloped Sasuke in a warm, comforting hug. The gentle pressure of her arms wrapped around him, holding him close as tears streamed down his face. He stood rigid, feeling unworthy of solace, his hands still tucked away in his pockets.

However, sensing his turmoil, she squeezed tighter. Her embrace spoke of acceptance, a silent assurance that his pain was valid. His resolve crumbled, and he withdrew his hands from his pockets, surrendering to the comfort she offered.

With a quiet desperation, he wrapped his arms around her, sobbing into her shoulder. The dam had broken, releasing the weight he'd been carrying. Shanan's calming chakra cycled through their embrace, soothing his anguish.

Time suspended as they stood entwined, lost in the serenity of the moment. The world's din faded, replaced by the gentle rhythm of their breathing. Sasuke's tension eased, his shoulders relaxing as the warmth of her compassion seeped into his bones. In her arms, he found refuge, a place to confront his demons without fear of judgment.

She leaned back, her smile gentle. "You're right; you have been a bit of an asshole lately," she said.

Sasuke's sad smile acknowledged his mistakes. His eyes, still red-rimmed from tears, held a deep regret.

"Naruto and I understand. Just like I know you understand his struggles today," she said. "It's all complicated now, isn't it?"

"Yeah... it is," he whispered.

Shanan's reassurance came gently. "I'm sure Naruto will forgive you. I'll help you find him."

His eyes locked onto hers. Gratitude and hope flickered within their depths.

As they began walking, Shanan's hand reached for his, their fingers intertwining in a comforting grasp. His eyes closing briefly at her touch. The soft rustle of leaves and chirping birds filled the air, accompanied by the gentle sway of trees, creating a serene symphony.

His curiosity eventually broke the calm. "So, how was your visit with Lee?" he asked.

"It was good," she replied. "Neji yelled at me and made me cry."

His eyes widened in alarm, concern etched across his features as his protective instincts kicked in.

"Oh, don't worry," she reassured. "It actually kinda made me happy."

"Of course it did," he teased, rolling his eyes playfully.

Her expression turned serious. "Though I really hate to leave Lee alone... He's not doing well."

Sasuke nodded empathetically. "Yeah, I saw the fight... I really like Lee. So I'm sorry he got hurt."

Her thoughts seemed to wrestle with the impending challenge, her pace halting. "But Sasuke... you have to fight Gaara in the finals."

His gaze met hers, then drifted away. "Trust me, I know."

"And you won't forfeit?" she asked.

A hint of mischief touched his lips. "Would you?"

She looked away, her silence acknowledging his resolve.

"I'll be alright, Shanan," he assured her. "I've been training with Kakashi every day. And... During Lee and Gaara's fight, I copied Lee's Taijutsu. I've been working hard to perfect his moves and his speed and Kakashi has been really helpful. Besides, with any luck, I'll avenge Lee for you."

Her eyes snapped back, surprise and gratitude flashing. "Sasuke..."

"If it makes you happy... I won't let him hurt two people you love." A hint of nervousness crossed his face. "And, you know, Kakashi is a pretty good sensei... when I don't despise him."

Her eyes shimmered, tears of joy threatening to spill. "I'm glad you guys made up."

Sasuke paused, gaze dropping. "Well, I think that's partly why Kakashi's training me so hard – to counter Orochimaru's influence – he's worried I'll go train with him."

"What? Why would you—" she began.

He took a deep breath. "Orochimaru wants me to seek him out for power."

The words hung heavy, weighted with implications.

Her distress was palpable, her eyes widening.

Sasuke's hands enveloped hers, his fingers intertwining in a gentle yet firm grasp. "I have no desire for that power, Shanan," he vowed. "No intention of leaving you or Naruto." His gaze locked onto hers. "That would be like choosing darkness over light."

Her worry lingered, but his gentle touch soothed her.

He caressed her hand, his lips softly brushing against her skin as he kissed it. "I'm not going anywhere."

Her tension dissipated with a soft sigh. "Okay," she said as her shoulders relaxed. "Because, I really don't think I could handle that."

Sasuke enveloped her in a warm hug, his arms wrapping securely around her. "I love you too much to ever leave you," he whispered, his cheek against hers.

The curse mark, once a looming shadow, now seemed insignificant beside their love for one another.

"I promise."

He leaned back, his fingers gently brushing her hair aside. The tender touch sent shivers down her spine. A soft smile adorned his face. His eyes, filled with devotion, locked onto hers.

Shanan's heart swelled, overflowing with emotion. Sasuke's love was her anchor, grounding her amidst life's turmoil.

Naruto's enthusiastic voice burst forth, shattering the serene atmosphere. "There you guys are! I've been looking everywhere!"

Shanan and Sasuke exchanged surprised glances as Naruto approached.

"We were looking for you!" Shanan exclaimed.

"Well, I came home after fifteen minutes." Naruto chuckled. "Should've just waited..."

Sasuke's expression turned sincere. "Naruto... I'm—" he began.

"I know, man. It's that stupid curse mark."

"Yeah, but... I'm still sorry," Sasuke admitted.

Naruto's grin returned. "Yeah? Good, you should be." He laughed, a carefree sound that echoed through the air. "Sorry I let it get to me so much," he added, his smile tempering Sasuke's guilt.

"Well... don't worry, it won't happen again."

"Don't lie to my face!" Naruto teased. "Coz we both know that's not true."

Their laughter filled the air, echoing through the tranquil surroundings.

"Let's go home," Shanan suggested, breaking the playful banter.

Naruto's enthusiasm bubbled over as they walked. "Tomorrow's the big day," he said, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.

Their chatter continued, anticipation growing for the final round. The setting sun cast a warm glow, bathing them in golden light. Their spirits remained high, fueled by hope and determination…

The next morning, the sun rose over Konoha, casting excitement across the village.

Shanan arrived at the hospital, determination in her eyes.

"Alright, Lee! I'm busting you outta here!" she said as she burst into his room unannounced.

Lee sat up abruptly, gripping his blanket under his chin as he turned to look at her.

"Oh, good! You're already dressed. I was worried you wouldn't be," she admitted. "But I wanted to make a grand entrance, so I took a chance!" She rushed to his bedside, excitement coursing through her veins.

"You came to take me to watch the final round?" he asked as a smile crept over his face. "I did not expect to be able to go!"

Shanan beamed at him as she held her hands out for him. "Well come on, Bushy Brow, let's get a move on!"

Lee tossed his blanket aside with vigor and grasped both her hands while she helped him out of bed. "Has it already started?" he asked her.

"Nope! We're running way early," she said with a laugh. "But, due to my cleverness, I'm accounting for the fact that we're both sad and broken and will probably be moving at a snail's pace."

He laughed at her as she put her arm around his waist to support him. "Naturally."

She grabbed his crutch and handed it to him so that he could use it for extra support. "Injured conjoined twin formation!" she said with extra enthusiasm.

"Yes!" he added. "Chunin exams, here we come! Shlee Shlee is on the way!"

Shanan stopped and looked at him with a scrunched face. "Is that our couple's name?" she asked him.

"Oh, you do not like it?" he asked her.

"Lee… it's terrible! But I LOVE it anyway!" she said as they started walking again. "Actually, it's way better than Shanrock… plus saying it twice emphasizes the twin idea."

"That is exactly what I was thinking," he said with a smile. "Wait, so was it clever?"

"Yes it was."

And just as she had predicted, their journey to the arena had taken much longer than it would've if they'd both been in top form. Especially since her headache had worsened by the time they arrived. Fortunately, they still managed to be early and, despite their exhaustion, they still made their way to the bottom of the stairs to sit in the front row.

Lee noticed her wincing in pain as they sat down.

"Shanan, if you are tired then you should rest your head on me. I know that I am heavier than I look and you supported me a lot on the way here."

"Okay," she said as she leaned her head on his shoulder, gratitude shining in her eyes, despite the intense lingering pain.

Lee wrapped his arm around her protectively as they watched the seats fill. "So who do we root for?"

Her brow furrowed. "Well… that's a tough one. Neji is like my brother. But, it's hard for me to not root for my little baby."

He always found her maternal treatment of Naruto interesting, but he also admired the fact that she was so intensely protective of him.

"I think it's only fair if we play both sides, don'tcha think?" she asked him.

"Of course! That is definitely the best option." He nodded and they sat quietly until every seat was full.

Their friends filled in the seats around them, anticipation building steadily as Neji and Naruto's fight drew nearer.

Hinata sat on the other side of Shanan and grabbed her hand.

"I hope Naruto wins today," she said with a soft smile.

Shanan lifted her head slowly, relief washing over her face. "Hey, I heard about your fight. I'm so glad you're okay, Hinata! I was worried sick." She squeezed Hinata's hand. "I know Neji's power better than anyone. Are you really alright?"

Hinata nodded, still smiling. "I'm glad it happened, I think. I found my courage. Also, seeing Neji's pain made me realize that being in the main branch has its own struggles, just like being in the side branch does. So, maybe taking some of his anger out on me was helpful somehow."

"Hinata…" Shanan smiled at her and leaned her head back on Lee. "That's really compassionate and understanding of you." She looked out at the arena just as Neji entered. "I know he got more than carried away with you. And while I'm disappointed he tried to hurt you so badly, I'm a little proud of him for feeling his emotions instead of suppressing them."

"Me too," Lee added.

Shanan sighed, eyes still fixed on Neji as he waited for Naruto. "Maybe this will help him soften up a bit. It'd be nice for everyone else to see him the way we do. Huh Lee?"

Lee gave a breathy chuckle, almost tearing up at the thought. He tended to be about as emotional as Shanan was. "He already might be, Shanan. He let us hug him yesterday and he even hugged us back. That is not something he has ever let us do."

Her eyes misted as she smiled, intuitively sensing Neji's hidden depth. Yesterday's hug, nestled between sternness and annoyance, revealed profound progress. Beyond his skilled teamwork, Neji consistently showed his protective side to Lee and her, his stoic facade occasionally cracking to reveal it. He was their grumpy big brother, and they admired him deeply.

Naruto entered the arena, facing Neji, and the crowd erupted in cheers, anticipating the first of four thrilling matchups.

Shanan's grip on Hinata's hand tightened, mirroring Lee's on her shoulder.

Tension enveloped them as friends held their breath, anxious for the pivotal match.
