A/N: Here's another chapter for you all - Callie and Arizona are finally trying to communicate, yay!
Once again, thank you everyone for your response. Today is a bit of a double-whammy as I've released a one-shot as well - feel free to go an read that for a bit of angst and smut!
Mistakes are all my own, and feedback is loved and appreciated!
Babyblue was always your colour
It's a little strange how we're seeing each other
But god, you look just as I remember
It's been a few years but I've known you forever

Callie sat in contemplative silence as she digested Arizona's words - and the cake in her mouth.
"Um… so you remember everything?" Callie asked, shifting slightly on the couch.
"Oh, I remember it very clearly" The blonde tilted her head to the side, squinting her eyes.
Is she flirting with me?
No, no.
"You just seemed, you know, so… casual about everything. You've been acting like nothing happened, so I just assumed…"
"That I forgot? Interesting way to think about it, Callie." Arizona chuckled, she seemed relaxed in her demeaner, but the brunette could sense that there was more going on.
She cleared her throat, readying herself. "I, I want to apologise, Arizona. I know I probably made you uncomfortable and I was so, so drunk. I mean, I practically forced myself on you-"
"Stop. Stop right there, Calliope Torres." Her tone was scolding, especially with her the finger-pointing gesture she currently held.
This must be how Sofia feels when I have to play 'bad cop'.
"Look, I don't expect an explanation, I know that you yourself probably haven't wrapped your head around it," Arizona sat herself next to Callie, with a noticeable gap between them. "I'm not mad, I mean – I might have drank a lot too, but I could've have stopped it sooner than I did," Callie felt the itching need to interrupt, but she decided that it was about time she let her ex-wife speak, and she wanted to hear what she had to say before she responded.
"I can practically hear the cogs turning in that head of yours, we were married once, remember? I haven't forgotten the way you overthink," Arizona said, resting her hand on Callie's knee, "You need to take some time to figure out what's going on with you, and in the meantime, I think we need to work on our relationship."
Callie spluttered, "W-What?" Her eyes widened at her ex-wife.
Arizona's giggle cut through her shock, "Yes, Callie - for Sofia," Her laughter died down into a soft smile, "We barely even speak, and I can see it's affecting her. Regardless of our history, your relationship with Penny and everything else, we need to be co-parents. I need us to be able to talk and spend time together as a family without things being awkward."
She felt herself turn rigid as the woman spoke, Arizona wanted to be friends. She didn't know how she to feel about it, and that was just more confusing to her. The mantra of 'We're divorced, I'm with Penny' returned at full force. Callie should feel relieved that her ex-wife wanted to develop a good co-parenting relationship, to want to be friends - but it only stung further when the blonde continued speaking.
"I know that what happened the other night was a mistake, and nothing really happened anyway so I think it's best if we just move on from that," The words that had come out of her ex-wife's mouth didn't sit right with her, despite the fact that she'd been trying to convince herself for days that it was just a mistake and that there was no feeling behind it. It was just… a drunken act that resulted in nothing.
As if it wasn't the most connected she'd felt to anyone since… well, Arizona.
As if all the romance and sex she'd experienced with Penny could ever compare to how she'd felt with Arizona's body pressed against her that night.
The denial resurfaced faster than she was prepared for.
I don't have feelings for Arizona, I was drunk when it happened, she's right. It was just a mistake.
I like Penny – Penny is great, and easy, and doesn't make my world turn upside down and that's good.
It's good.
"So… I think we should spend time together, and more time as a family with Sofia. We need to communicate, properly for once; become comfortable being around one another because we are going to be forever connected by our little girl. And I think we can both agree that it would be easier if we were friends. So, what do you think? Can we try to be friends?" Arizona asked, almost timid in her question.
Callie could see that Arizona was being patient with her, giving her chance to process without pushing her to respond.
She didn't want to just walk away this time. Everything had been so strained and uncomfortable since the divorce. It had felt like every time she'd seen or spoken to Arizona, it had been weighted down by their past and every way that they'd hurt each other.
Arizona was now giving them a chance to have actual closure, to make peace with one another. They could put this to bed and Callie would finally be able to move on, she wouldn't be thinking about Arizona like this anymore.
Maybe then, she wouldn't feel like her skin was on fire every time the woman touched her or even looked in her direction. Maybe all she needed was closure. Callie could heal, they could both heal. Then, she could learn to love Penny without the fear of being hurt, or at least that's what she told herself.
"You know what? Okay! Let's try it." She found herself beaming at the blonde, letting herself feel excited at the prospect of building a friendship with her ex-wife.
It wasn't long after their conversation in the attendings lounge before she texted Callie again.
She was trying to convince herself that she wasn't lying to her ex-wife, just not entirely being truthful about her intentions.
There was no malice behind her actions, but there was no denying she wanted to be with Callie again, and it would only help them to put their prior indiscretions to rest before pursuing a relationship.
Arizona genuinely did want to be friends with Callie, knowing that it would be good for their family but also knowing that it was also the best foundation for a relationship. It was something they never really got the opportunity to be, as Arizona had been ever so forward in their first interaction by kissing Callie in Joe's.
While she was hopeful for more, she couldn't forget that Callie was a flight-risk. Often hot-headed and stuck in her ways. She hoped that with a little patience and a rejuvenated determination to make it work, Callie would find some level of self-growth as well.
I mean, the fact that Callie had even let me speak was a positive start.
Arizona had noticed Callie's facial expression when she had suggested that the other night was a mistake. It had been as if her words had frozen her ex-wife in place. Callie could try to convince herself it was a drunken mistake, but hearing it from Arizona must have had an impact.
Whether Callie was ready to admit it or not, the blonde knew that she felt something for her – and she planned to bring whatever that was to the surface.
Me: Hey! What do you think about a family day on Saturday?
The response wasn't as quick this time. In fact, Arizona didn't get a response until she was home, pacing around the kitchen. She'd wondered if Callie had decided it was a bad idea to try to be friends, or if it was too much too soon.
Arizona had thought this weekend was a good idea, with her having Sofia. It wouldn't be taking out of Callie's time with their daughter, so that couldn't be used as an excuse. Maybe, her excitement was getting the best of her. Too eager in her approach. Maybe, she'd already scared Callie away.
The thought made her stomach sink. Was she pushing too hard?
What am I doing?
Her plan felt stupid. She questioned whether or not it was a good idea at all. She'd hurt Callie so many times before, and now here she was – trying to weasel her way back in with the hope that Callie could possibly find a way to love her again. She didn't deserve the chance.
Arizona wished that Sofia was there to distract her. To take her mind off her ex-wife, not that it worked often, considering their little girl was the spitting image of Callie.
Her turmoil was interrupted by a consistent buzzing from her pocket. She pulled her phone out, seeing Callie's name on the screen.
Oh my god, she's calling me!
Arizona was quick to answer, trying to sound casual.
"Hello, this is Dr. Robbins' speaking."
What? Seriously Arizona?
She heard the most stunning laughter vibrate through the speaker, "Do you not have caller ID, Dr. Robbins?
Cringing, she fumbled, "Um… yes, I just wasn't paying attention."
"Sure… Well, Dr. Robbins, you requested a consult with myself - Dr. Torres, and Miss Sofia. We are calling to accept your request." Her ex-wife jested, clearly amused.
She heard her daughter huffing in the background, "Mama! I wanna be doctor too! Mommy tell her!"
Arizona found herself giggling at their antics, "Fantastic. Does Dr. Sofia, have anything specific that she would like to do on Saturday?"
"Yes, she has requested the arcades, soft play, the park with the 'big girl slides', the ice-cream shop, pizza, the movies, the beach, and… Disneyland." As her ex-wife reeled off Sofia's extravagant list of ideas, she felt overwhelmed. It was obvious that their daughter was thrilled by the idea of spending a day together, as a family, and clearly wanted to do everything they possibly could together.
"Hmm… how about we pick two realistic ideas from that list."
"So, Dr Sofia, what do you think?" She heard her wife ask. Sofia took no time to respond.
"Slides an' pizza! An' Disland!"
Arizona knew if she dismissed her daughter's requested too firmly, there would be a tantrum, "Well, big girl, Disneyland would take all day to get to! So there would be no time for slides or pizza."
"Hmm… okay. We go Disland next time." Sofia asserted. That would be a conversation for another day.
Her ex-wife's voice returned, "Why don't you go play in the lounge while I speak to Mommy?"
"Okay! Bye Mommy! Love you!"
"I love you too, baby girl." Her heart felt full, her face ached from smiling.
"Hi, I'm back. You're off loudspeaker now."
"Hi, Callie. I wasn't sure if you were going to say yes." Arizona admitted, rubbing a hand across her brow.
"I think it's a great idea. You should have seen Sofia's face when I told her. She… she needs this."
"I know. I'll see you on Saturday? Do want me us to meet you there?"
"Or I could pick you both up? It'll save on gas if we travel together."
Arizona furrowed her brow, "If that's okay with you? You don't have to. Do you want to just keep Sofia until Saturday rather than dropping her off on Friday night, so it's less travel for you?"
"No, no. It's only a short drive, and I don't want to take away from your time with her. She's already so excited to go back to your house." Callie sounded subdued, a change in her tone.
"As long as you're sure, thank you Callie."
"Of course, my car is way better than yours anyway. Plus, Sofia's already made song requests for the journey. It's only fair that you have to suffer through her delightful singing too."
Arizona chuckled down the line, "Somehow, she got my singing voice, huh?"
She heard the smile in her ex-wife's voice, "Somehow, yes… She's got your smile too, you know? The way her face just lights up a room. She's got your super-magic smile," Arizona heard Callie clear her throat, "Anyway, I'll pick you up at 10?"
"Perfect. See you then, bye Callie."
"Can't wait. Goodbye, Arizona."
When she heard the call end, she was left stood in her kitchen. Filled with excitement for the weekend ahead. Everything felt different between them. It was thrilling.
Warmth filled her chest, Callie had been more accommodating than she'd ever expected. Maybe, she wasn't wrong. This might just work.
'Operation: Get your woman back' has commenced.
