Chapter 139: Shard of Hope
"Damamu, you doing okay, chupa?"
"Ooogh…Too many Kuribohs…" Damamu moaned.
"I'm sorry I made ya two eat all those extra meatballs. I really couldn't finish 'em by myself."
"Chupa's reasonably confident it was the meatballs plus the eggs and soy sauce plus the orange juice plus the parfait, chupa. Damamu usually has an enormous appetite, but when you mix all that sweet and salty together…Few survivors, cabra."
"We should probably get back."
"Putting this baby to bed, chupa? Chupa's all for it!"
"What d'ya say, Damamu? Should we head home?"
Damamu had already fallen asleep. Food coma.
"THAT QUICK, CABRA?"
"We're so bad at this!" Yuhi laughed.
"We're doing much better than the Creator did with Kuaidul, chupa."
"Hrmm…The Earthdama always wantin' to Rush Duel, or the Karutumata wantin' to turn the entire universe into cards because his dad favoured Rush Duels over him? Yep. When that's the scale you're judgin' by, we're killin' it at this parenting thing!"
"Chupa?" Chupataro stopped.
"What is it, Chupataro?"
"There's a sign, chupa."
"Temporarily closed for repairs? Seriously?"
"Chupa will go ask somebody, chupa! You stay here, chupa!" Chupataro ran off with Damamu before Yuhi got a word of reply in.
From the at moments rapid-fire conversation between Chupataro and the multi-eyed, multi-tentacled station attendant (which Yuhi couldn't make out this far away), things didn't look hopeful. But Yuhi pushed for an update upon Chupataro's return nonetheless.
"How do things look?"
"Bad, chupa. The subway maintenance guy over the radio said the train won't be in service for at least another couple hours, chupa. So unless we take the long way around, it looks like we're stuck down here in the Alien Residential Area for the night, cabra."
"I'm not walkin' through the sewers again! The last time we did that –"
"You, Yuamu, Yudias, Rovian, and Yuna were escaping from Dudi Nishaw's troops, chupa?
"Oh. Right. I meant the last, last time!"
"The Quetzalcoatl alien and the ice cream monster, chupa."
"Yes! Them!" A shiver visibly shot through Yuhi. "Not one of your finer moments…"
"Hey, it's a dog-eat-dog, or should Chupa say an alien-eat-alien world out there, cabra!" Chupataro shrugged.
Yuhi re-ingested his dinner (Ick!), still disgusted Chupataro would eat a sentient pile of carnivorous ice cream, especially one they encountered in the sewer. Especially after he vomited so close to it!
"I'm gonna hurl!" Yuhi bent over again.
"If you're going to do that, do it away from this goop, Yuhi! So Chupataro-kun doesn't accidentally –"
"BLEGGGGGHH!" Yuhi threw up anywhere anyway.
Not one of Yuhi's finer moments either.
"Let's just have Damamu energy bubble us back up!"
"You think Chupa didn't consider that, chupa?" Chupataro showed Yuhi just how helpful Damamu would be by going all in on his levers.
Damamu, floating while asleep and otherwise held over Chupataro's shoulder by his robot's strength, wasn't coming off, however far forward or backward Chupataro bent.
Out like a light, Damamu didn't even snore against Chupataro's back. It was rare to see Damamu so low on energy.
"Maybe we should find a hotel before all the vacancies are filled up, chupa. Wasn't there one by the fortune-telling place where Nomuratodamas does his readings, chupa?"
"A night next door to that phony prophet? Not a chance! He might try to con me again!"
"What's he going to do? Give you a spoiler to an edition of Mr. Universe you haven't read, chupa?"
Yuhi's retort was an immovable scowl.
"You have a better idea, cabra?"
"Sure I do! UTS!"
"UTS, chupa?"
"The Alien Residential Area's UTS building is still up since Phaser forced everyone below the surface!"
"And Anesan didn't trap someone in a chokehold after it came to her she'd be paying twice the amount in rent, chupa?"
"Well, it's Yuamu, so I can't state for a fact strangulation marks weren't involved, but…I guess she thought we were pullin' in enough business from the second location to cover the added costs."
"Or she reported the landlord to MIK for false crimes and had him kicked off Earth to dodge the monthly payments, chupa!"
"You're an awful kinda sorta brother-in-law, y'know that?"
"And you're an unbelievable brother, chupa! Letting your sister assign, what was it, one or two of the UTS8 to work in the underground long-term? Elder abuse, chupa!"
Had Yuhi objected the President's decision-making, he'd have risked his employment being terminated, blood relation be damned.
"You're one to talk! You attacked Yagi-san over yakitori!"
"Chupa attacked him for his insulting impression of Meeeg-chan, cabra!"
"Like. We. Said. That was just you misunderstanding! Yagi-san was only commentin' on his own cooking! He said the yakitori was 'Not baaaaad~!' He didn't mean it like how Meeeg-chan usually says it!"
"Uwaaa. I'm exhausted…" Damamu finally showed signs of life. "Yuhi…Chupataro…Are we there yet?"
…
"Your shoulders're stiff as wood."
"Uh?" Yuna turned partway from the monitor displaying the new Duel ID Control System, which had, to her delight, locked Asaka out from duelling.
From now on, Goha dictated who did and did not duel. Nobody duelled without her authorization! ("Posh~!")
Otes yawned, jolted back to consciousness on his throne shaped like the Relic. Yuna's self-aggrandizing and victory lap put him to sleep, except it wasn't obvious with his helmet over his eyes or his hella slack sitting position.
"You'd be more fun if you got mad or went on a rampage."
Zuwijo was standing by his side. On guard, per Yuamu's wishes (even though Yuamu was on the other side of the throne eavesdropping). The revived Velgearian was also standing stiff as wood.
The tiniest shard of Yuhi was wedged behind Otes' overused smile, but Otes made no note of it. Perhaps it was the hesitation in Yuamu's heart manifesting in the Dark Power, reducing its effectiveness in ironing out Resurrection of the Dead's flaws. Or perhaps Yuhi's personality and love for his sister, Chupataro, and Damamu really were that strong to survive the memory wipe.
Whatever the truth of this Otes now in their midst, Yuhi wasn't done yet.
