Addie had offered to supervise and pay for a sort of 'party' for Amy's birthday. So Amy and her best friends, Maria, Rose and Sarah had watched the latest Disney movie in the movie theatre with Addie supervising a few rows behind, despite Amy's protestation "it's the movie theatre. I've been without an adult a bunch of times. I'm 12 now." Then they had decided to go to TGIs. Amy had suggested pizza again but they'd compromised when Derek had said "you so realise Pizza isn't an actual food group right Amy?"
"I have News" Maria said once they'd ordered their food. Amazingly a burger rather than pizza for Amy. "Good news or bad news?" Sarah asked. "I'm not sure, but I'm moving."
"Cool, where to?" Rose asked. "Elefsina"
"Is that in Queens?" Sarah asked and Amy rolled her eyes because she had figured out where this conversation was going. "No. It's in Greece. Kinda near Athens. My Grandparents are getting older and Grandma is sick right now. Plus my dad got a job offer in Athens so we're moving. Next month."
"This probably isn't the best time to say this, but I'm gonna be moving pretty soon too. You guys all know my dads in the military. Like I think the 3 years here has been the longest I've any lived anywhere. Mom says we'll probably move before Christmas. We're not sure where yet. I'm just hoping to stay in the states and to go someplace warm." Rose shrugged.
"Guys you're literally abandoning us!" Amy joked but they could all sense the shock and sorrow she was hiding. "We're 11. It's not like we can stay alone. And you know what Maria's parents are like." Rose said and they all nodded. Protective was taken to another level when it came to the Greek family. "And it's not like I can argue with the United States Army. I hate that my dads in the military. It's like as soon as I get comfortable someplace. Like build a life there, we have to move again. Your lucky Ames. Even though your mom technically works for the military she gets to stay in the city."
Even though the girls enjoyed their meal Addison could tell that there was a sombre undertone. Being eleven or twelve years old and having to move, or having your best friends move, really was one of the worst things. At least Amy and Sarah still had each other.
"Poor Ames." Derek sighed when Addison recounted the dinner back at her penthouse that evening. "But she's a kid. She'll make new friends right?"
"I hope so. But middle school is harder for girls. It's not like boys when you just go out at recess and play soccer and if you fall out you just punch each other and get over it. Girls are cliquey and bitchy. At least she still has Sarah."
"Wait. Sarah McNeil?"
"I have no idea what her surname is."
"Tall, dark hair, but not as dark as Ames. Could probably pass for 16?"
"Yeah that's the one."
"We need to keep an eye on her. Both Sarah's older siblings are trouble. Drink. Drugs. That kinda thing."
"Just because her siblings are trouble doesn't mean Sarah is, she seemed like a sweetheart. You wouldn't want people to judge you, just because they knew Nancy and Kathleen."
"I know. Just I want to be cautious. Just watch them. You know."
"I get it, but for a 12 year old, Amy seems pretty independent and sensible."
"Hey Amy," Derek spoke to his sister on the phone. "Did you decide what you're gonna dress up as for trick or treating?"
"Derek. I'm 12!" She replied indignantly. "I think I still went trick or treating at 12."
"Yes. Because you had an incredibly cute baby sister to take with you." Amy joked. "I'll just answer the door to any kids who come here"
"Okay, just make sure you..."
"...look through the peep hole first." Amy interrupted her brother. "I know Derek. I'm not a baby, or an idiot."
"How's school going Amy?" Addison asked one weekend in early November. "It's okay..." Amy said sat on the recliner in Addisons penthouse. "Maria went back to Greece last week and Rose's dad has been stationed at Fort Benning starting next week, so they're moving to Georgia. I guess Rose got what she wanted. A warm place in the states. I'll miss them both. Like Sarah is great, but she's not in all my classes." Amy's eyes filled with tears but she wouldn't let them fall. "God I'm such a drama Queen!"
"You're 12 Amy. It is hard when friends move away. It's okay to be upset. You're not a drama Queen for feeling emotions."
"Mom always says I am. And Nancy and Katie, they always say I need to grow up and stop being so melodramatic"
"Well with me you're safe to feel all your emotions, you shouldn't hold them in." Addie explained and Amy let her tears fall, Addie pulling her in to hold her as she cried. "I've got you Amy. I've got you."
