Although she was welcome any time, Addison had specifically invited Amy round for new year. Derek had taken the subway back from his moms place and brought Amy with him much earlier in the day to avoid the crowds ready for the ball drop. Amy had her backpack, which was mostly filled with the rather voluminous blanket she had made Addison. Amy wasn't feeling the best. She felt more tired than normal and her stomach was bothering her a little. Too much excitement, food and chocolate, she thought.

As soon as Amy arrived at Addison's penthouse she was engulfed in a hug from her brother's girlfriend. "Did you have a good Christmas Amy? Did Derek give you my card."

"Yes it was nice thanks, and I'm excited to go shopping with you." Amy replied and Addison smiled. She'd written in her card that her gift was going to be to take the younger girl shopping for some clothes after hearing her complain a few times that as the youngest sister out of 4 she only ever got hand me downs from her sisters, never any new clothes of her own. "How was your Christmas Addie?" Amy asked. "It was nice to see my family and some of the staff." Addie said which caused Amy to giggle. "Are you like related to the Queen of England or something? You have staff, and you literally use 'how do you do' as a greeting. Which except for you I've only ever heard on like British TV shows."

"No I'm not related to the Queen. Lots of people say how do you do."

"Only posh people. Like what's wrong with hi?"

Amy laughed and so did Addison. She liked Amy's gentle teasing. She'd missed the banter and giggles of the younger girl when she'd been back with her parents unable to relax and act they way she did around Derek and Amy. "Oh I got you a Christmas present." Amy pulled the wrapped gift out of her backpack. "I'm really sorry if you hate it. I just didn't know what to get you because you have so much stuff and money and..."

"Amy, you're rambling. Stop I'm sure I'll love whatever you bought me."

"I didn't buy it, we'll I kind of did but, just open it and you'll see." Addie smiled and opened the gaudily wrapped gift. "Oh the fabric is so soft Amy. I love it."

"You don't think its tacky?"

"No I love the monochrome pattern. what do you mean you didn't buy it?"

"I made it kind of. I didn't know what to get you and so Elizabeth drove me to the fabric store and showed me how to like cut the fabric to tie it together to make a double layer blanket thing."

"You made it with Lizzie?" Derek asked.

"Yeah, it was really nice actually. She said that I'm her favourite sister. Not that that's saying much because the other options are Nancy and Kathleen."

"Amy this is amazing. Shall we go sit on the couch and try it out?" Addie asked sitting on the coach and patting the space next to her to invite Amy to sit down with her. "It looks like you bought this in a shop Amy. If you hadn't said that you'd made it I wouldn't have even known, and that makes it even more special." Addison smiled and pulled the blanket over both their laps. "So I was thinking take out for dinner. I'm guessing you want pizza Amy?" Addison asked being pretty sure the answer would be yes, as it always was when pizza was an option, and Amy was around, but then Amy surprised her. "I'm not too fussed Addie, just get what you and Derek want."

"You don't want pizza Amy?" Addie asked.

"My belly kinda hurts. Well not hurts just feels a bit off. Too much Christmas food probably."

"Do you want a Tylenol or somthing? Do you feel like you're going to actually be sick."

"No not at all, like I said it's not bad I just feel not quite right."

"Okay, well let me know if that changes."

"What up Red." They heard as someone open the door. "Oh Mia. Didn't know you were here little one."

"Markus" Amy rolled her eyes at Mark Sloane her brothers best friend. "Mia?" Addie asked. "Mark thinks it's hilarious to call me any short version of Amelia, other than Amy. He even went with Mimi last week. I'm definitely not a Mimi." Amy said rolling her eyes with a wry smile. Mark's teasing was always light hearted and fun. Never meant to hurt or offend the young girl who was like a sister to him. Unlike the mean and malicious comments Nancy and Kathleen made about the youngest Shepard sister.

"Hey bro." Derek said fist pumping his friend. "Impeccable timing as always Mark, we were just about to order dinner what do you want?" Addison asked. "What do I want? You mean Mel here isn't insisting on pizza?" He said looking at Amelia. "Mel?" Amy asked "is that even short for Amelia?"

"Well it's literally in it A-MEL-ia. Are you suddenly not pizza obsessed anymore?"

"I'm just not feeling hungry. Too much Christmas food. I'll just eat a little of whatever you pick."

They chose Chinese and Amy just ate a little chicken and rice. She still felt a little nauseous but not too bad. The four of them watched TV waiting for the ball to drop.

Amy still wasn't feeling good. She knew in the past when her belly was bothering her it was because she needed to poop so she excused herself and went to the bathroom. She was shocked when she realised that there was blood in her underwear so she shouted for Addison. "Addie, what's happening? My stomach hurts and now my butt is bleeding. Am I dying?" Amy panicked and Addison, realising what had happened had to hide a smile. "Amy, you're not dying, do you know what a period is?"

"Like a dot at the end of a sentence. I learned that in the first grade. What's that got to do with anything?"

"Okay yes, but have you heard your sisters, or the other girls at school talk about getting their periods?"

"Yeah, but my sisters are always talking about stuff I don't understand and when I ask them they tell me I'm too young and to leave them alone!" Amy sulked. Addison felt sad for the preteen. Having 3 older sisters and not a single one talking to her about periods. "Well, all that's happening is that you got your period. It's totally normal. It happens to every woman."

"Why?"

"Well," Addison thought how best to explain it to Amelia. "When a woman has a baby in her tummy, that happens because a sperm from a man has to attach with an egg from a woman. Your period is what happens when a sperm doesn't attach to the egg. You bleed out the egg and the lining of your uterus that was ready to grow a baby if a sperm had connected to the egg. It's a little confusing I know. But it's totally normal, and happens every month for about 3-5 days. And would explain why your belly was hurting. For some people their period makes them really sick and for others they feel fine."

"What about you?" Amy asked Addison.

"I'm usually fine, sometimes on the first day or so I take an Advil or cuddle up with a hot water bottle to help the belly aches. I'll fill one. For you in a moment." She went on to show Amy how to use pads, she didn't want to do overwhelm the girl by explaining tampons yet, especially knowing that for her at least, they made the cramps worse. "I feel like I'm wearing a diaper." Amy complained once Addison had shown her how to use a pad, in a clean pair of underwear. "You'll get used to it, honestly." Addison soothed the girl. "I'll get you your pjs and a towel and fill that hot water bottle for you. Why don't you take a shower."

"Ok, don't tell Derek and Mark what happened."

"I won't don't worry." Addison smiled as the girl turned on the spray, although she had a suspicion that the men may have figured out what was going on from Amy calling her so panicked. They were all training to be doctors to be fair.

Amy was sat in the big armchair under the blanket she had made for Addison, hiding the hot water from Derek and Mark. They watched a couple of movies, all Amy appropriate much to Mark's complaints, he'd hoped to watch a horror or action movie but they were vetoed by Addison despite Amy claiming that she wasn't a baby. They watched the ball drop at 12 and were able to see an amazing firework show from the large windows in Addison's living room. Addison and Derek shared a midnight kiss while Amy and Mark rolled their eyes. "Happy New Year Amy." Addison smiled. "I hope this year will be fantastic for you."
