Bringing Michael Home
It had taken weeks of physical healing for both Carly and Michael after the baby boy's traumatic birth, but now, the doctors had said that Michael was healthy enough to come home from the hospital. Despite what the doctors said, Carly was cautious. "Are you're sure it's safe for us to take him home, Jase?" Carly asked in the limo as they travelled toward the hospital.
"I'm sure. Michael's a strong kid. He's doing great and he'll do even better at home with us," Jason said. He had been nothing but loving and supporting of Carly as they prepared to take baby Michael home from the hospital. Every time she would get worried, Jason was quick to reassure her. With Jason by her side, holding her hand, Carly took a deep breath and did her best to calm her fears.
Yet when they reached the hospital nursery, Carly's eyes were fixated on Michael's hospital crib as tears streamed down her face. Postpartum shadows loomed and they whispered that she was lacking and inadequate as a mother. Given up for adoption herself, Carly feared repeating the cycle of pain for her son. Her biggest fear was that she would fail her child. Loving Michael so much, with all of her heart, Carly felt she would never be enough for him and that her little boy deserved so much more than what she could offer.
Jason wrapped gentle arms around her waist. "You're strong, Carly. I'm here for you and Michael needs you." His voice soothed her ache, yet some of her doubts still lingered.
Carly's gaze met Jason's, haunted by so many 'what ifs.' "What if I'm like my birth mother? What if I hurt him?" she asked in a sad voice. "I don't want to hurt him, Jase. I love him."
Jason's expression turned fierce with love. "Never, Carly. You'd never hurt him. You're his safe haven. Hold him in your arms. Feel his heartbeat; it's a perfect match to yours."
As nurses prepared Michael's paperwork for discharge, Carly trembled as she approached his crib. Jason lifted the tiny boy, placing Michael carefully in her embrace. Initially rigid, Carly eventually relaxed into baby bliss. Michael's tiny fingers curled around hers as his warm breath touched upon her skin. Tears sprang to her eyes anew as hope rekindled in a flood of maternal love.
"Ohhh Jason. I'm doing it. I am holding our baby boy," she said softly, amazed at herself for that accomplishment.
As Carly held Michael close, the nurses continued to assist with the final preparations, gathering all of Michael's baby items and assisting wherever needed. One nurse lingered, her gaze tender upon the baby boy with bright red hair. It was Nurse Bobbie Spencer, the woman who had cared for Michael with extreme kindness and skill. Although she wasn't aware, Bobbie was Carly's biological mother.
Carly's heart swirled with mixed emotions –- gratitude towards Bobbie's care for Michael, yet lingering resentment towards the mother who had given her up for adoption at birth. Their eyes met briefly as Bobbie sensed Carly's turmoil beneath a surface that seemed relatively calm.
Bobbie's own heart ached as she recognized echoes of her own 16-year-old self –- fearful and alone, forced into relinquishing her newborn directly after birth. She saw beyond Carly's mask, into sorrowful eyes which mirrored Bobbie's decades-old pain. Compassion stirred for the young woman as Bobbie tenderly touched Carly's arm.
"You're going to be an amazing mother. Whatever fears you have, just know your baby feels safe. He loves you... so much," Bobbie said. "Just look at how much he loves you."
Carly's gaze dropped as tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. This time she refused to shed them, but Bobbie's kind words unintentionally pierced her deepest defenses, stirring her longing for a maternal connection and understanding. Jason, oblivious to the underlying tensions between the two women, smiled warmly at Bobbie. "Thank you for caring for Michael... and Carly." Bobbie smiled back, eyes never leaving Carly's face.
"It's been my pleasure," Bobbie stated. "After you get him home and settled, I will be by soon to check in on him, since you requested me as his baby nurse. I'm gonna miss the little guy."
Jason nodded as he helped Carly situate Michael into the baby seat. "We're going home, Mr. Man," Carly said to her infant son.
