"I can't believe them!" I yelled, throwing my hands up in the air, "we did nothing wrong! The boat thing was an accident,"
"It's fine, if they want us gone, then that's okay," Aang replied calmly, but I could tell he was sad.
"Aang?" I started after a few minutes of silence.
"Yes Kiri?" My brother responded, turning his head to look at me.
"How did we get to the South Pole?" I asked.
"We got trapped in an iceberg," Aang told me. My eyes widened.
"An iceberg?" I thought.
"How long were we in there?" I asked Aang.
"A few days,"he replied hesitantly.
"Then, why did Katara's grandma say it had been 100 years since anyone had seen an airbender?" I asked. I had a feeling Aang was lying.
"She was probably over exaggerating," Aang sighed, "don't think about it too much, it hasn't been long," I sighed, deciding to trust my older brother.
"Where are we going to go?" I asked.
"I don't know, we'll find a place," Aang admitted.
Appa roared, causing my head to perk up. We were staying in a small block of ice, not knowing where to go.
"Yeah, I liked her too," Aang responded to Appa's roars. Suddenly, he noticed something, causing him to gasp.
"What is it?" I asked worriedly.
"The Fire Navy!" Aang exclaimed, "and they're heading straight for the village!" He quickly slid down the ice block before turning to me.
"Come on, we gotta go!l Aang commanded, "stay here, buddy," he said to Appa. The bison groaned in response.
"Without Appa, how are we going to get to the village? I asked.
"We're going to travel by penguin!" Aang exclaimed while pointing to a huddle of penguins.
"Sounds good to me!" I replied with a nod. Once we were over to the penguins, Aang pulled out a fish from his belt.
"Come here penguins! We need you for a rescue mission!" He exclaimed. The penguins quickly huddled around us, making my brother and I giggle. We each hopped onto a penguin and sledded over to the village.
Once we had made it to the small village, Aang knocked over a young man with a ponytail, and I knocked him over again. I hopped off of my penguin and smiled at the villagers, then laughed when Aang fell off of his penguin.
"Hey Katara, Hey Sokka!" My brother exclaimed.
"Hi, Aang," Sokka said monotonously, "Thanks for coming," suddenly, the ponytail boy got up and glared at Aang and I. He went into a fighting position, signaling his men to do so as well.
"These guys don't look very friendly!" I said as I slowly began to back away.
"Just stay back Kiri, I've got this," Aang told me reassuringly. I nodded and stepped back. My brother was surrounded by these guys, but he quickly made them back off by using airbending to throw snow at them.
"Looking for me?" He asked.
"You're the airbender?" The ponytail boy asked,"you're the avatar?" I gasped as I realized my lying brother had been exposed.
"Aang?" Katara wondered.
"No way," Sokka said breathlessly. I smacked my forehead.
"Why did Aang have to lie?" I thought.
"I've spent years preparing for this encounter," the guy with a scar started,"training, meditating, you're just a child!" Aang broke from his fighting stance and took the time to look confused at scar boy, tilting his head.
"Well you're just a teenager," Aang said, confusion in his voice. This caused Mr. Burnface to send a giant fireball at him, but my brother used his staff to deflect it.
"If I go with you, will you promise to leave everyone alone?" Aang asked, holding his staff in front of him.
"Aang, what are you doing!" I yelled,"you're just gonna give yourself up to them like that?!" Aang didn't respond, keeping his gaze on the guy in front of him. Ponytail nodded, meaning that Aang was going to be captured by the Fire Nation. The soldiers grabbed him by the shoulders and took him to the ship.
"No! Let him go!" I yelled. I tried to run up to the soldiers, but I was stopped by Sokka's arm going in front of me.
"Stop it Akira," he sighed, looking up at the soldiers who were taking Aang, "he's going to be fine,"
"You don't have to do this Aang!" Katara exclaimed. Aang turned his head to look at us.
"Don't worry guys, it'll be okay," he said with a soft smile, "take care of Appa and Kiri for me until I get back!" Tears began to well up in my eyes.
"Head a course for the Fire Nation!" Scar boy said, "I'm going home," the door of the ship closed and I began to cry, my sobs echoing across the village.
"Why did they have to take him?" I thought, making me cry even harder. Katara knelt down to my level and lifted my chin with her fingers.
"Hey, it's gonna be okay," she said, her voice soothing,"Aang is strong, and you of all people should definitely know that," I nodded. Katara stood and held out her hand to help me up. I grabbed her hand, even though I could've just used airbending to stand.
"Now come on, let's head back to the village,"
Later…
It had been a while since the Fire Nation ship took Aang. I had collected myself and was now helping out around the village to rebuild tents that had been knocked over. When I saw gran-gran, I walked over to her.
"Hello child," she said with a warm smile.
"Hi gran-gran," I said softly, not used to calling anyone by that name, "do you know where Sokka and Katara are?"
"I think that they went that way," gran-gran said, pointing to an area in the distance.
"Thank you," I said with a bow. I grabbed my staff from the igloo it was perched on and turned it into a glider. Then I glided away, searching far and wide for the water tribe siblings.
When I arrived, Sokka and Katara were bickering over something, I didn't know what.
"Uh, hey guys," I said, waving with a small smile.
"Hi Akira!" Katara said, seemingly lighting up at my presence. I was glad to be making her happy, but that didn't matter, not when my brother's life was on the line.
"Hey Kiri," Sokka said. The usual flutter in my chest at his words was there, but it quickly faded when I realized that he had called me "Kiri," When I was born, Aang had made up nickname for me, and he was the only person I had ever let use it.
"Just call me Akira please," I said with a soft smile, trying to sound like Aang. Sokka nodded before speaking again.
"So, what are you out here for?" He asked, arms crossed.
"I was going to take Appa and search for the ship that took Aang," I admitted,"I was wondering if you two would come with me,"
"Actually, I was just going to suggest that," Sokka said with a smirk, "But I don't wanna go on that fluffy monster, no offense, so I've got this boat!"
"Sokka, there's no way that we're going to catch that ship on a canoe," Katara sighed,"it would be best if we just took Appa," I smiled.
"What do you kids think you're doing?" I voice from behind us said. Startled, I yelped and turned around, quickly positioning myself into a fighting stance. Then I realized it was gran gran, and broke out of the fighting stance.
"You'll need these," the old woman said with a warm smile, handing Katara and Sokka a roll of sleeping bags,"you have a long journey ahead of you,"
The water tribe siblings and I exchanged surprised glances before turning back to Gran Gran.
"It's been so long since I've last had hope," gran gran continued,"But you brought it back to life my little waterbender,"
"you, my brave warrior," she said, turning to Sokka, "be nice to your sister," the elderly woman embraced Sokka into a hug.
"Yeah, ok gran," Sokka said, patting her on the back.
"And you, Akira," gran gran said, turning to me, "you have a lot ahead of you, being the avatar's sister and one of the last air benders,"
"One of the last airbenders?" I thought, "what does she mean by that?"
"Aang is the avatar,he's the world's only chance, you found him for a reason,"
"What about me?!" I thought, feeling slightly jealous.
"Well come on, we have to get on Appa," I said.
Later…
"Go," Sokka said, annoyed, "Fly,"
I wondered how long it was going to take him to realize the words were "yip yip,"
"Please Appa, we need your help!" Katara exclaimed, "Aang needs your help!"
"Appa, yip yip," I said monotonously. Suddenly, the bison began to ascend, causing the pair of siblings to gasp.
"He's flying! He's flying" Sokka excitedly exclaimed while holding onto the saddle.
Katara and I shot him a smug look, causing him to stop screaming
"I mean- big deal, he's flying," he sighed.
"Akira, how did you know what to say to Appa to get him flying?" Katara asked.
"I hear Aang say it all the time," I replied, shrugging my shoulders,"It kinda gets stuck in your brain once you hear it so many times,"
Later…
We had been flying for a while, and the whole group was starting to get restless.
"Are we sure we're even going the right way?" Sokka asked as he stared into the bright blue sky.
"How many times are you gonna ask that?!" Katara replied irritatingly. I groaned. I was so sick of hearing the siblings argue. Suddenly, I spotted something in the distance.
"Guys! Over there!" I exclaimed, pointing to the thing in the distance. Katara began to steer Appa closer to the object, and I then realized what it was.
"The Fire Nation ship!" I exclaimed. Looking closer at the ship, I saw a small yellow blob next to a slightly bigger red blob.
"It's Aang!" I yelled.
Suddenly, the ponytail guy sent a blast of fire at Aang, and he quickly dodged it.
"Please don't get hurt!" I thought. I watched as the guy sent more and more fire balls at my brother, knocking his staff out of the way. At this point, Aang was on the edge of the ship, and I was afraid that he would fall off. With two final fire blasts, Aang was sent overboard and plunged into the water below.
"AANG!" I called out, a pained look on my face.
"NO!" Katara called out.
Suddenly, Aang came back in a tornado-like spiral of water, his eyes and arrow tattoos glowing. My eyes were wide and my mouth was even wider. Aang was water bending! With one strong whip of water, Aang knocked scarboy and his crew off of the ship.
"Did you see what he just did?" Katara asked
"Now that was some water bending!" Sokka responded.
"Since when could he water bend?" I wondered out loud.
When we flew down to the ship, Aang was collapsed on the deck
"Aang! Are you ok?" Katara asked. We all quickly rushed over to him and Katara held him by the arms.
"Hey Katara, hey Sokka, hey Kiri," Aang said weakly, "thanks for coming,"
"Well, I couldn't let you have all the glory," Sokka said jokingly.
"I dropped my staff," Aang said, turning his head to the area where said staff was dropped.
"I'm on it!" Sokka exclaimed, rushing over to get the staff.
"I think that we should get on Appa as soon as possible," Katara said. She picked up Aang, draping him across her arms. I swore I could see my brother blushing. Katara lifted Aang up onto Appa's head, and I jumped up onto the saddle.
Suddenly, scar boy's soldiers got up, causing Katara and I to gasp. I pushed one of them off the ship with a large gust of wind, but Katara put up her hand to signal that she didn't need my help. I watched as the water tribe girl attempted to push them away with a water whip, but then did it backwards, freezing Sokka's feet in the process.
"Katara!" He exclaimed. Katara turned around and tried the water whip again, this time actually hitting the men and freezing them.
"Yes!" I exclaimed, pumping my fist into the air. Katara quickly began to climb up Appa's fur.
"Hurry up, Sokka!" She said. Sokka was using his boomerang to get the ice off of his feet.
"I'm just a guy with a boomerang," he sighed,"I didn't ask for all this flying and magic!" He grabbed Aang's staff and then climbed up Appa's tail.
"Yip yip! Yip yip!" Sokka exclaimed. We quickly soared back into the sky. I watched the ship below, and noticed that scar guy and another figure were beginning to wind up a humongous fireball.
"Fire ball heading our way!" I called out. Aang quickly got up from his seat and used his staff to redirect the fire ball towards a glacier. The glacier exploded and pieces of snow and ice landed on the ship's deck. We watched as this all happened, Aang waved to the scar boy as we flew farther and farther away.
The sun was setting, and we were all sitting on some place in the saddle. Sokka was sitting in the back, Katara in the middle, me in the front, and Aang on top of the railing.
"How did you do that with the water?" Katara asked Aang excitedly, "it was the most, amazing thing I've ever seen!"
"Yeah! you haven't even started you're water bending training," I added.
"I don't know, I just sort of did it," Aang replied, staring blankly off into the distance.
"Why didn't you tell us you were the avatar?" Katara asked, her expression turning into one of worry.
"Because…" Aang started, looking away from the water tribe siblings and I,"I never wanted to be," my expression became worried as well. It was silent for a while, everybody taking in the information that had just been given to them.
"But Aang, the world's been waiting for the avatar to return and finally put an end to this war," Katara said.
"And how am I going to do that?" Aang asked.
"According to legend, you need to master water, then earth, then fire," Katara explained.
"That's what the monks told me," Aang replied.
"Well, if we go to the North Pole, you can master water bending," Katara said.
"We can learn it together!" Aang replied, becoming visibly happier.
"And I'm sure Sokka will be able to knock a few Fire Nation heads on the way," I said with a smirk, turning to Sokka.
"I'd like that," he sighed, "I'd really like that," This response made my heart flutter, and I could feel my cheeks getting hot.
"Then we're in this together," Katara stated.
"Alright, but before I learn water bending," Aang said, pulling out a map from his pocket,"we have some serious business to attend to,"
"Oh no," I thought, smacking my forehead. Usually, when Aang has some "serious business," it means that he's gonna mess around and get hurt or in trouble. It's still fun, nonetheless. He sat down next to me on the saddle and unraveled the map.
"Here, here, and here!" Aang said as he pointed to three different locations on the map.
"What's there?" Katara asked, pointing to one the locations.
"Here, we'll ride the hopping llamas," Aang explained,"Then way over there, we'll surf on the back of giant koi fish!"
"Then back over here we'll ride the hog monkeys ," he continued,"they don't like people riding them, but that's what makes it fun!"
"Aang, the last time you rode a hog monkey, you broke both of your arms," I sighed, "I am not feeding you again!" Katara and Sokka broke out in a fit of laughter, causing Aang and I to laugh as well.
