CHAPTER 13 - FIRST DATE

Saturday, December 16, 2023

Elizabeth woke up with a bright smile lighting up her face as the soft morning sunlight streamed through her bedroom window. She stretched languidly, the fresh linen sheets feeling cool against her skin, and glanced at her phone on the nightstand. Upon seeing it was only 7:00 a.m., Elizabeth wondered how much time she had before Julie burst in, eager for all the details about last night.

Just as these thoughts swirled in her mind, a cheerful ping echoed in the quiet room—a text notification. Curiosity piqued, she picked up her phone and grinned upon seeing the sender's name.

Captain Fire Hazard: Good morning, Beautiful.

She quickly typed a cheeky response, trying to contain her excitement.

Elizabeth: How do you know I am beautiful right now?

Captain Fire Hazard: How could you be anything but beautiful?

Elizabeth felt her cheeks flush at his sweet words.

Elizabeth: Oh, you are so good at flattery, Captain. Maybe I should keep you around.

Nathan's response was instant and full of charm:

Captain Fire Hazard: I don't think I would complain about that. (Heart and smile emoji)

Feeling playful, Elizabeth shot back:

Elizabeth: You don't think you'd complain, huh?

Captain Fire Hazard: You did say maybe. How will I know for sure unless it happens? (Winky face emoji)

With a soft laugh, she considered his words before typing a response.

Elizabeth: Fair enough. (Smile emoji) I'm really looking forward to breakfast and coffee this morning. Are we still on?

Captain Fire Hazard: Absolutely. In fact, I wanted to see if you had a specific time to be home.

Elizabeth pondered for a moment, her mind flashing to plans with her sister.

Elizabeth: I think Julie and I are going shopping around 2 pm. Why?

Captain Fire Hazard: That's good. I have something in mind for after breakfast, so bring your Cozzie."

Elizabeth: My what?

Captain Fire Hazard: Tog/Cozzie = (swimsuit) Boardies = (Board Shorts.)

Realizing what he meant, she recalled another item he had given her the slang for.

Elizabeth: Okay, and my thongs, right? ( Winky face emoji.)

Captain Fire Hazard: Right. See you soon love.

Her heart fluttered in her chest at his use of the endearment. She couldn't prevent the flood of joy that went through her upon seeing it. What she was experiencing with Nathan was unchartered territory, making her a little leery, but for now, she was willing to explore and sent one final response.

Elizabeth: Can't wait, Captain." (Heart emoji)

Then, feeling more than ready to embrace whatever the day held in store for her, she tossed her phone aside. With a bright smile lighting up her face, Elizabeth leaped out of her cozy bed and entered the bathroom, the soft morning light illuminating the space. She quickly went through her routine after brushing her teeth and splashing her face with cool water.

Opting for convenience today, she pulled her hair into a simple ponytail, letting the remaining strands cascade. Elizabeth chose not to wash her hair, saving that task for later in the day when she would need to look her best for Mark's party that evening.

Exiting the bathroom, a wave of warmth washed over her as she saw Julie perched on the edge of her bed, two steaming cups of coffee resting invitingly on the nightstand, their rich aroma filling the room. Elizabeth glanced at the clock hanging on the wall and realized Nathan would be arriving in just twenty minutes, a sense of excitement bubbling in her chest.

"Is there any way that I could postpone this conversation until I get back?" Elizabeth asked with a lighthearted chuckle, rummaging through her open suitcase, carefully selecting her garments for the day.

Julie tapped her chin, pretending to consider the request. "On one condition? Actually, make it two," she replied, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes.

Elizabeth shot her sister a wary glance, quickly understanding that negotiating with Julie would be futile. Once her baby sister had her mind set on something, it was as immovable as a mountain.

"First, you have to promise to tell me all the details about everything when you get back, and I mean, don't leave anything out about last night and today. Condition number two is that you try to enjoy each moment and not overthink anything," Julie insisted, her tone half-serious, half-teasing.

"I promise," Elizabeth responded, though she couldn't help but add, "But you know that at some point, it will all become an issue, right?" She already suspected that Scott had filled Julie in about their conversation to spare Elizabeth from enduring her sister's relentless interrogation.

"Of course, Lizzie, however, you'd be surprised how much can change in just the 18 days you have left," Julie said knowingly. "Now, the most important question remains: What are you wearing?"

Elizabeth surrendered to her sister's enthusiasm for the next fifteen minutes, allowing Julie to help her get ready. After some back and forth, they settled on a striking red bikini layered beneath her favorite frayed denim cutoff shorts and a breezy, white lace tank top that fluttered delicately at the edges. On her feet, she slipped into her well-loved Keds, worn from summers spent in the sun. Elizabeth packed her flip-flops, sunscreen, and a fluffy towel into a vibrant beach bag, along with her wallet. By the time they made their way downstairs, Nathan had just arrived and was chatting with Scott in the foyer.

With one last reminder to be home by 2 PM so they could go shopping for her dress, Julie nearly shoved Elizabeth and Nathan out the door, her excitement palpable.

As they walked to Nathan's car, they chuckled at Julie's antics. Elizabeth automatically headed to the driver's side, only to be greeted by Nathan's amused laughter when she opened the door.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I forget that you Aussies drive on the wrong side of the road," Elizabeth quipped playfully.

"Wrong side, huh? Maybe it's you Yanks who are driving on the wrong side," Nathan shot back with a cheeky grin, enjoying their banter.

"Oh no, it's definitely you," Elizabeth teased as she circled the vehicle and hopped into the passenger seat. Nathan followed, opening the door for her in a gentlemanly manner.

"I might go so far as to say it's more like the adventurous side!" she declared with a laugh as Nathan settled into the driver's seat.

His eyes sparkled with mischief as he turned the key in the ignition, a playful smirk spreading across his face. "Adventurous side, I like it."

"I bet!" Elizabeth giggled, thoroughly enjoying their back-and-forth. "I suppose that might explain why Aussies seem so laid back; you're just daring death every time you pull out of the driveway."

Nathan snickered, expertly backing out of the driveway and onto the open road. "Don't worry, Mate. I'll keep you firmly on the left side of the road, commonly known as the correct side," he teased, eliciting another fit of giggles from Elizabeth.

"So, where are you taking me for breakfast? Is it close to the beach?" she inquired, her curiosity piqued.

"It's beachfront," Nathan replied, his excitement evident. "Since Mr. Fluffy prefers the tranquility of wooded areas, I thought this would be the perfect spot for us. I even took the liberty of conducting a little wildlife search of the premises to ensure we wouldn't be interrupted by any potential native creatures!"

"Do you know the owners personally?" Elizabeth asked, her curiosity piqued as Nathan expertly maneuvered the truck through the streets.

"You could say I'm very close to them," he replied with a grin. "I thought I would prepare breakfast for you at my home. I live in a beachfront cottage, and it's a perfect spot for a morning meal."

"Breakfast at your cottage sounds amazing! What do you cook?" Elizabeth's excitement bubbled over as she imagined a cozy meal overlooking the ocean.

Nathan chuckled, glancing at her with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Well, I make a mean avocado toast with poached eggs, and I've been known to whip up some pancakes that even my mum would approve of."

"Pancakes, huh? Now you're speaking my language! Are they American-style or the fluffy Australian version?"

"A bit of both. I can bridge the gap between our cultures!" Nathan said confidently. "I'll even add some fresh fruit and maple syrup to make it authentic."

"Now I'm really looking forward to it!" Elizabeth said cheerfully, settling back into the seat as the scenery transformed from urban streets to more open, coastal views with crashing waves in the distance.

As they drove, she glanced out the window, taking in the lush greenery and the hint of salty air that began to permeate the truck. There was something serene about the early morning drive, the sun just beginning to rise higher in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything.

"Living on the beach must have its perks. I bet there are plenty of awesome spots around here," she said, her mind buzzing with possibilities. "Do you surf?"

"Every chance I get! It's one of my favorite things about living here," Nathan replied enthusiastically. "But I wouldn't say I'm at a pro level yet. I thought we might go surfing for a bit after breakfast. Do you surf?"

"I don't, but Scott tried to teach me. I mostly rode the waves using a boogie board, which kept me close to shore. On the other hand, Julie loves it, as I'm sure you know. She was always out on her board riding the waves all summer. She took lessons for a few years and kept her board at our summer house in Martha's Vineyard."

"I'd love to try it again!" Elizabeth said, her excitement shining through. The thought of learning to surf on Australian waves made her heart race. "That is if you're willing to teach me."

"Absolutely! Surfing is a big part of beach life here in Mistletoe Cay; even Santa does it. On Monday, we have our annual Surfing Santa Contest," Nathan said, an approving nod emphasizing his enthusiasm. "So, plan for Monday to be a beach day."

Elizabeth giggled. "So that's why I saw so many surfing Santas everywhere! I have so much to learn."

"Scott and Mark mentioned the other night, after you fell asleep at Agatha's, that we also need to get you up to speed on cricket before the annual family game."

"I'm sorry for falling asleep on you. I think you were trying to talk to me when I did," Elizabeth admitted sheepishly.

Nathan laughed, reassuring her it was okay as they pulled onto a private road. A few minutes later, they pulled into the driveway of his home. As she stepped out of the truck, she could hear the waves crashing against the shore and the sounds of the native birds. The salty scent of the ocean mingled with other scents instantly relaxed her as she looked at the house situated on the beach. The sun glistened on the water like diamonds scattered across a vast blue canvas.

"Welcome to my humble abode!" Nathan exclaimed proudly with his arms wide.

"This is so beautiful!" she exclaimed, glancing around in awe.

The house was a striking example of modern architecture, characterized by its clean, sharp lines and a harmonious blend of materials. The exterior featured a combination of light grey horizontal siding that elegantly contrasted with the brilliant white trim framing the windows and doors. Accents of rich brickwork added depth and texture to the façade, creating a visually appealing aesthetic. The gabled black roof stood out and complemented the house's color palette, giving it a bold yet sophisticated appearance.

A beautifully crafted wreath hung from the white front door, enhancing the festive cheer. Colorful Christmas lights adorned the roofline and windows. She could only imagine what they would look like lit up against the evening sky. The overall atmosphere was inviting, balancing a festive spirit with understated elegance. Given its prime beachfront location, Elizabeth envisioned the house must offer breathtaking ocean views, particularly at sunset when the sky would be painted in stunning hues of orange, pink, and purple.

Stepping inside, Elizabeth was immediately enveloped by a festive ambiance that felt both cozy and welcoming. The interior unfolded into a spacious open-plan living area marked by soaring high ceilings that showcased exquisite wooden beams, infusing the space with a rustic charm. The walls were adorned in soft, neutral tones of light gray, complemented by distressed shiplap paneling that added an inviting texture and depth to the overall design.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows along the back wall permitted panoramic ocean vistas, flooding the room with natural light that danced playfully across the surfaces. The living room was anchored by a large, plush sectional sofa upholstered in a light crème fabric, inviting relaxation. It was adorned with a festive assortment of throws and decorative pillows in vibrant shades of red and green, perfectly encapsulating the holiday spirit. This inviting seating arrangement was strategically placed before a wall of windows, framing the mesmerizing ocean view from multiple angles so one could enjoy the sights and sounds of the waves crashing just outside.

The stone fireplace was a focal point as a gathering spot for warmth and conversation, dressed with holiday greenery, cherished photographs, and glimmering fairy lights that enhanced the room's cozy atmosphere. Above, a stunning chandelier hung gracefully from the ceiling, accompanied by a stylish ceiling fan, each adding to the room's elegance. Flanking the sectional were two rustic end tables topped with lamps featuring driftwood bases, further enhancing the coastal theme. Completing the festive décor was a tall, slender Christmas tree adorned with twinkling lights and delicate ornaments, standing proudly and filling the space with the spirit of the season.

"Come on, let me give you the grand tour before I prepare breakfast," Nathan said, offering his hand with a warm smile that radiated hospitality. They entered the kitchen, and Elizabeth's eyes brightened as she eyed the room's inviting atmosphere. "As you can see, this is where all the magic happens, otherwise known as the kitchen."

"Well, we'll see if I agree after I've eaten," Elizabeth teased playfully, a twinkle of mischief in her eye.

The kitchen embodied an open-concept design that flowed smoothly into the adjacent living spaces. Elizabeth admired the white cottage-style cabinets, their crisp, clean lines beautifully accented by elegant black trim and hardware. Crafted from light quartz, the countertops gleamed under the soft morning light, lending the room a fresh yet classic ambiance. An inviting island stood in the center, topped with inviting stools positioned beneath a stylish pendant light that hung gracefully above, casting a warm glow.

"I do love the open design. My house, at least on the ground floor, embraces a similar concept. However, my kitchen is separate from everything else," Elizabeth noted, her tone reflective as she considered her own home.

"Maybe I could come for a visit sometime and see for myself," Nathan mused, a hopeful note in his voice.

"I'd love that," Elizabeth replied shyly, a blush creeping onto her cheeks as she moved into the adjacent dining room.

The dining area was a delightful extension of the kitchen, featuring a distressed wooden table that lent a rustic charm, surrounded by sleek black chairs that echoed the kitchen's color scheme. Large patio doors framed a breathtaking ocean view, flooding the room with light and the sea air's invigorating scent.

"Wow, this view is simply perfect for serving meals! The scenic backdrop, especially at sunrise or sunset, must be spectacular," Elizabeth exclaimed, tilting her head slightly as she gazed out toward the horizon, where the water met the sky in a harmonious blend of blues.

"You're absolutely right. It's one of my favorite spots in the house," Nathan replied, his eyes shining with appreciation for the view.

Just as they were immersed in the beauty of the moment, Elizabeth's stomach growled unexpectedly, breaking the spell. They both burst into laughter, and she felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. With a playful nudge, they returned to the kitchen, where Elizabeth perched on the kitchen island, her legs swinging slightly as Nathan began preparing breakfast.

As he moved with deftness and familiarity, the kitchen came alive with the sounds of sizzling pans and the delightful aroma of fresh ingredients. Once he was finished, Nathan led her through the patio door to the deck, where a charming small table was already set up. It was adorned with colorful plates and utensils, every detail carefully chosen to create a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere.

"Wow, you really went all out for breakfast!" Elizabeth remarked, her eyes sparkling as she absorbed the lovely setup.

"Just wait until you taste the pancakes!" Nathan replied with a playful wink, his confidence evident as he placed the dishes on the table.

"Okay, I'm definitely ready for that," she beamed, her heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and gratitude for this unexpected morning adventure.

Settling into their outdoor dining experience, Elizabeth felt the gentle warmth of the sun on her skin while the soothing sound of the waves lapping against the shore provided a calming soundtrack. Nathan moved around the table, pouring freshly brewed coffee into mugs with care and meticulously plating the food with an artist's touch.

"Just like I promised, pancakes and avocado toast, plus a vibrant selection of fresh fruit on the side," Nathan announced proudly, placing the bountiful spread in front of her.

"This looks incredible! You really know how to impress a girl," Elizabeth said, a playful glint dancing in her eye as she eagerly dug in.

The next hour unfolded seamlessly, filled with laughter and shared stories as they enjoyed breakfast together. The warmth of the sun overhead matched the warmth of their conversation, fostering a sense of camaraderie and connection that felt both effortless and profound.

After savoring a hearty breakfast filled with laughter and shared stories, Nathan and Elizabeth moved into the kitchen to clean up. The sun poured in through the large windows, casting a warm golden glow across the room as they scrubbed plates and wiped down counters, their playful banter punctuating the intimate atmosphere. Once done, Nathan grabbed his surfboard, an old but sturdy piece that had weathered many waves, and they set off down the path leading to the beach.

As they approached the shore, the waves crashing against the sand filled the air, mingling with the distant laughter of families and the calls of seagulls. They found a picturesque spot and carefully laid out their brightly colored towels on the pristine sand.

Elizabeth, still adjusting to the intense rays of the Australian sun, squinted at the sapphire ocean, her heart overflowing with anticipation. She watched surfers gracefully conquering the waves, their silhouettes cutting through the water like blades. Nathan noticed the wonder in her eyes and felt a surge of excitement. "So this is where legends are made. Are you ready to become one of them?" he asked, his voice playful yet inviting.

"As ready as I'll ever get, I suppose," Elizabeth replied, her tone edged with apprehension and eagerness. She felt her pulse quicken as the thought of surfing—of challenging the ocean—filled her with dread and exhilaration.

"Let's get started then," Nathan said, his enthusiasm infectious. With a smooth motion, he peeled off his t-shirt, revealing a muscular physique that seemed sculpted by the waves themselves. A well-defined eight-pack glistened under the sun, each muscle taut and impressive. Elizabeth's breath hitched as her eyes widened in surprise, her thoughts racing wildly.

"Oh my!" she exclaimed, unable to help herself. 'Is this what they mean by ripped? I knew he was fit from the picture but in person… WOW!' Her internal thoughts swirled with excitement. 'Note to self: More dates that include beaches.'

Noticing her unabashed gaze, Nathan smirked, his confidence radiating. "Oi, Lizabeth, eyes on the prize, mate! Unless, of course, you fancy a sunburn later tonight?" His teasing tone broke through her momentary distraction.

A rush of warmth crept over Elizabeth's cheeks, and she quickly averted her eyes down to her sunscreen, her mind racing as she tried to regain her composure. Taking a deep breath, she removed her shorts and top, her movements slightly clumsy with nerves, and applied the sunscreen with focused precision, deliberately avoiding Nathan's gaze even as her heart raced.

Once Nathan picked up the surfboard, he turned back and froze, momentarily captivated by the sight before him. Elizabeth stood in a striking red bikini that hugged her curves perfectly, the bright color contrasting beautifully with her sun-kissed skin. The gentle ocean breeze played with her hair, sending strands dancing across her shoulders.

'Wow!' Nathan thought, his heart skipping a beat. 'She looks like she stepped right out of a James Bond movie. Keep it cool, man; don't stare at her like a schoolboy,' he reminded himself, forcing his eyes away from her.

Catching him in the act, Elizabeth raised an eyebrow playfully and teased, "Oi, keep your eyes on the prize, mate. Never seen an American in a bikini before?"

Nathan's grin widened, a playful sparkle in his eyes. "I've seen plenty, but none quite as captivating as you." sending a rush of warmth through her. He silently added, 'Oh, don't worry. I have my eyes on the prize,'

"Now, let's get you on that board before I forget we're here for surfing," Nathan said with a sense of purpose, handing her the surfboard. Their fingers brushed together, igniting a spark that had nothing to do with the sweltering sun. As Elizabeth turned to walk towards the water, Nathan couldn't resist a final glance at her, her red bikini accentuating her figure and making it difficult for him to breathe.

"All right, let's get this show on the road," Elizabeth said, trying her best to project confidence despite her nerves bubbling beneath the surface.

Seeing her anxiousness, he touched her shoulder and said, "She'll be all right, Lizbeth. Then Nathan's demeanor shifted to that of an attentive instructor, his tone serious yet encouraging. "The first rule is to respect the ocean; she can be beautiful but also quite demanding. Lie down with your hands by your chest as if you're about to do a push-up," he instructed once they paddled far enough from the shore, the water lapping gently against them.

As Elizabeth sank onto the board, she felt her heart race more from Nathan's proximity than from the anticipation of riding the waves. "Like this, then? Or am I about to make a complete mess of things?" she asked, glancing back at him, trying to mask her nervousness with a joke.

"Perfect," Nathan replied, his voice low and soothing, his eyes following her form with admiration and concentration before he tried to refocus on the lesson. "When you feel the wave, you'll stand up, get your feet under you, but don't rush it; let the wave guide you."

He stepped back, giving her a bit of space while still keeping enough distance to catch her if she fell. The excitement pulsed in the air as they awaited the next wave.

"Okay, I'll give it a try," Elizabeth said, determination shining through her eyes as she paddled out, her confidence growing with each stroke.

As a wave began to rise in the distance, Nathan's voice echoed in her ears: "Now, go for it!"

Elizabeth pushed herself up, feeling wobbly but exhilarated. She stood for a fleeting moment, the ocean seeming to hold its breath, before she tumbled into the water with an unexpected splash. The cool sea enveloped her as she surfaced, laughter bubbling out of her, delighted at the experience. Her hair was a wild mess, the red bikini clinging tightly, and Nathan's heart raced at the sight.

"You almost had it! You're a natural… at falling," Nathan teased, wading into the water to meet her, playfulness dancing in his eyes. His gaze briefly scanned her figure, a smile tugging at his lips before he met her bright eyes.

"Thanks for the encouragement. You're a good teacher," she replied, splashing water at him playfully with a grin that lit up her face as the sunlight sparkled off her damp skin.

"But when surfing, falling is part of the fun," Nathan replied with a wink, laughter lacing his voice.

"So I guess that means I'm having lots of it, judging by how much I'm doing it," Elizabeth retorted, another playful splash sent in his direction, her laughter melding with the sounds of the ocean.

With each fall and rise, their connection blossomed, the barriers of nervousness crumbling under the weight of genuine enjoyment. After several more attempts, Elizabeth finally managed to stand for a brief moment, exhilaration painting her features before she fell again. The water split around her like a curtain, each splash punctuated by their shared laughter. Their conversations flowed effortlessly, each rolling wave bringing them emotionally closer.

As another hour rolled by, they reluctantly decided to take a break. Looking at her phone, Elizabeth realized it was time for her to head home, and Nathan needed to prepare for his shift at the station.

During the drive back, an easy, comfortable silence enveloped them—like a warm blanket—as they each reflected on the delightful memories they had forged that day. The gentle hum of the engine and the sounds of the tires on the road were the only sounds, yet it felt filled with unspoken words and shared delights.

As they pulled into Julie's driveway, Nathan parked the truck, his heart thumping in his chest as he turned to her. He reached for her hand, fingers grazing hers, an electric charge igniting between them. With a slight tremble, he said, "I had a lovely time today and wondered if you would be my date for the station's Christmas party. It won't be fancy like Mark's, though."

Elizabeth squeezed his hand gently, drawing his gaze. When their eyes met, she smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes—and leaned in to kiss his cheek softly. "I'd love to," she replied, her voice bright and sincere, igniting a spark of joy in Nathan's heart as their connection deepened.

As she stepped out of his truck, Elizabeth paused just before closing the door. She turned back, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she said, "Be safe, Captain."

Nathan felt a warmth swell within him at her parting words, a sense of belonging washing over him as he pulled away from the driveway. With thoughts of her lingering in his mind, he drove off into the sunset, knowing this day was just the beginning of something beautifully unexpected between them.

Author's Note: I started to split this chapter into two parts to prevent the length from being too long. However, I sense you would rather have the whole date than just half. Hopefully, I will have the next chapter out by tomorrow. It's been slow going because the unseasonably cold weather in Florida is wreaking havoc on my joints, especially my wrists and fingers.

For those worried about Mark, don't be because as it was stated earlier they are like siblings. No romantic feelings on either side.

Also please be aware that I will be taking some artistic license for some of the traditional activities as far as when they happen to fit everything in.

Last thing: She'll be alright - means everything will be okay.
