The local elementary school's gym was buzzing with activity as children flitted from station to station, trying out different musical instruments. The triplets, now seven years old, were no exception. Beatrice, Sabrina, and Joanna approached each instrument with unbridled enthusiasm, their excitement palpable as they tested everything they could get their hands on.
Beatrice was fiercely attacking the drums, her small frame barely managing to keep up with the energy she poured into every beat. Sabrina had latched onto a clarinet, puffing her cheeks as she produced a series of ear-piercing squeaks. Meanwhile, Joanna was at the piano, banging out what sounded like a horror movie soundtrack with an intensity that made several heads turn.
Scully stood near the entrance, watching the chaos unfold. She winced as a particularly loud clash of cymbals echoed across the gym. "They're trying out instruments like there's no tomorrow," she muttered, rubbing her temples.
Mulder, standing beside her, smirked as he leaned against the wall. "It's good for them. Exploring their creative side, finding their rhythm..."
Scully shot him a look. "Finding their rhythm? Joanna's playing like she's scoring the next apocalypse movie."
Mulder grinned, enjoying her exasperation. "Hey, maybe she's a prodigy. Beethoven started somewhere, you know."
Another loud squeak erupted from Sabrina's clarinet, followed by a cheer from Beatrice as she successfully executed a drumroll. Scully groaned and shook her head. "Mulder, have mercy on our souls."
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Come on, Scully. It's music to my ears."
She raised an eyebrow. "You're just saying that because it's not happening in our living room."
Mulder grinned sheepishly but didn't argue. He gestured toward the girls. "Look at them, though. They're having the time of their lives."
Scully sighed, her expression softening as she watched their daughters light up with joy, even in the cacophony. "True," she admitted. "But I'm just saying, if they all pick different instruments, you're the one building the soundproof practice room."
Mulder laughed. "Deal."
As the triplets moved on to the next set of instruments—Joanna eagerly grabbing a trumpet, Beatrice eyeing a bass guitar, and Sabrina twirling a flute—Mulder and Scully exchanged a knowing glance. The journey of parenthood was always full of surprises, but moments like these made the chaos worth it.
