Chapter 10: A Weekend to Remember

William Murdoch stepped off the plane, suitcase in hand, looking visibly tired after the long flight. From a distance, he spotted Julia waiting for him with a warm smile. He walked over, and she pulled him into a hug, as if ages had passed since they'd last seen each other.

They headed to the car, got in, and Julia said with a kind smile, "That flight must've wiped you out, but I hope this trip helps you relax." They drove for a while, chatting about everyday things and enjoying the scenery. William glanced out the window and noticed they weren't headed toward London.

"Where exactly are we going, Julia?" he finally asked, raising an eyebrow.

She gave him a playful grin. "It's a surprise. But trust me, you'll love it."

"What about Susannah? Isn't she waiting for us?" he asked, sounding a little concerned.

"Don't worry. Ruby's taking great care of her," Julia replied. "She's staying at our place, and Susannah's having a blast with her. Ruby basically insisted we take a few days off. Everything's under control."

William smiled and nodded. "Ruby always knows how to make things work."

They carried on through the picturesque English countryside, chatting comfortably. Julia pointed out the rolling green hills, little forests, and quaint villages with stone cottages as they drove. William watched her with a grin, appreciating all the effort she'd gone to.

After a little over an hour, they arrived at a charming inn surrounded by hills and woodland.

"I figured we deserved some time just for us," Julia said as they walked onto the property.

Once they checked in and got to their room, William glanced around in approval. It was spacious and elegant, with a classic look, there was a big bed, a small table with two comfy chairs in the corner, and fresh flowers on the windowsill. The large window offered a view of the garden and the scenic hills beyond. Before they got ready for the evening, Julia grabbed her phone and called Ruby.

"Hey, Ruby? How's Susannah doing? Everything all right?" Julia asked, smiling to herself.

"Julia, everything's great! She's busy playing with blocks, and earlier we had a little picnic in the yard. Everything's totally fine," Ruby replied, clearly upbeat.

Julia beamed at William. "Hear that? Everything's good."

He smiled softly. "I'm glad. I'm sure Susannah's having the time of her life with Ruby."

"I bet you two are having fun too, huh?" Ruby teased in the background.

Julia burst out laughing. "Ruby!"

"What? Don't tell me you're not," Ruby said, amused.

Julia smiled. "We just got here, but this place is beautiful. I promise we'll make the most of our time."

"Don't worry about Susannah, just enjoy your weekend," Ruby said.

"Oh, we will, Ruby. Give Susannah a big hug from us. See you soon," Julia ended the call.

Setting her phone down, Julia sighed happily. "I think this is the perfect place to unwind," she said, looking out the window.

"I'm so glad we have this time to ourselves," William said softly. He stood up from the chair and walked behind her, wrapping his arms around her gently.

"Thank you for surprising me like this," he whispered, then pressed a tender kiss on her neck.

Julia turned in his arms and looked into his eyes with a soft smile. "William, having you here is all I need. That's the best gift."

William smiled back, pulling her closer. "The best gift for me is every moment I spend with you. Sometimes I forget how much I need you until we're together again."

Julia rested her hands on his shoulders. "Then remind yourself of that this weekend. I promise we'll make it unforgettable."

William leaned in and kissed her gently, then smiled. "Deal. Let's make it our weekend."

Without letting go, he continued to kiss her neck, pulling her in closer. Julia giggled lightly and lifted her hand to press gently against his chest.

"William, we have to get ready for dinner. We're going to be late," she said, still amused and affectionate.

"Who cares?" William mumbled, still nuzzling her neck.

She rolled her eyes with a playful smile. "There'll be time for that later," she insisted with gentle determination, stepping away. "But right now, we should hurry."

Julia picked up her suitcase and headed into the bathroom, tossing him a smile over her shoulder. "I hope you'll be pleased, William. No peeking!" she teased as she closed the door.

William chuckled under his breath, then opened his own suitcase to get dressed. He pulled out a fresh shirt and a blazer, adjusting the cuffs and collar in the mirror. "If Julia wants to surprise me, I'd better look good too," he muttered, buttoning up.

When Julia finally stepped out of the bathroom in an elegant, form-fitting burgundy dress that showed off her shoulders, William couldn't take his eyes off her. The dress had subtle lace details around the neckline and ended just above her knees. She paired it with delicate gold heels that perfectly complemented the deep burgundy, adding a dash of luxury. "You look stunning," he said, stepping closer and taking her hands in his.

A slight blush crept onto Julia's cheeks. "Thanks, William. You look just as handsome, you know. I couldn't ask for a better date. I guess I managed to surprise you?"

William laughed quietly and leaned in. "Surprise me? Julia, you amaze me every single day, and tonight… I'm definitely impressed." He leaned down and planted a soft, affectionate kiss on her lips.

She laughed gently and pulled back. "William, are we going to dinner or not?" she teased.

William, still covering her neck with little kisses, murmured, "I'd much rather stay here with you."

Julia rolled her eyes and nudged him away playfully, though still clearly adoring him. "Later, William. I promise I'll make it up to you. Trust me, you won't regret it."

He let out a dramatic sigh and gave her a mock pout. "All right, you win this time. But I'm holding you to that promise."

Julia giggled softly. "Shall we go?" she asked with a smile.

William gazed at her warmly. "I'm lucky to be going to dinner with the most beautiful woman in this inn."

Julia smiled back, her eyes shining with amusement. "And I'm lucky because I'm going to dinner with the most handsome man."

He grinned and took her hand after a moment. "Ready? Let's wow everyone in that dining room."

She laughed, gently squeezing his hand. "Ready."

The dining room was classy, with large windows looking out onto a dimly lit garden and a small pond. Their table was laid with gourmet dishes made from local ingredients, and there was a chilled bottle of champagne waiting in a bucket, along with two elegant glasses. A simple arrangement of white flowers and candles adorned the centre of the table, adding to the warm atmosphere. Soft classical music played in the background, and a polite waiter poured their champagne, wishing them a lovely evening.

They talked about everything and nothing, their plans, Susannah, and how much they'd missed each other. Julia raised her glass, smiling at William. "Here's to us, to this weekend, and to finally getting some time alone."

William clinked his glass against hers and looked at her with affection. "To us. You know, Julia, sometimes I forget how much I need moments like this. No work, no obligations… just us."

Julia's smile grew warmer, her gaze softening. "I'm glad we get to remind ourselves of that. I hope this weekend's packed with moments we'll remember for a long time."

William leaned in a bit, his eyes never leaving hers. "With you, every moment is memorable, Julia."

She returned his gaze with a sparkle in her eye. She gently tapped her glass to his again, and they both took a sip of the cool, refreshing champagne. "This place really is wonderful. Thank you for sharing this evening with me."

William felt a rush of warmth. "I should be thanking you, Julia. Every minute with you is a gift, and tonight… it's perfect because we're here together."

Julia smiled softly, her eyes locked on his. "Maybe the place is special, but you're the one who makes this evening perfect. Without you, even the most stunning setting would feel empty."

They raised their glasses once more, savouring the champagne. Julia propped her elbow on the table, leaning toward him. "How about we slip away somewhere… a little more private now?" she suggested, smiling over the rim of her glass.

William raised an eyebrow, smiling playfully. "That's an offer I can't refuse. Especially if somewhere private means I might finally get to take off that dress?" he whispered, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"William!" Julia burst into laughter and gave him a gentle swat on the arm. "Behave yourself! But yeah… maybe we should head back to our room."

Back in their room, they practically fell into each other's arms, forgetting the outside world. William pulled Julia close, kissing her with the kind of longing and passion that hinted at how much time they'd spent apart. She ran her hands over his shoulders, settling them at the back of his neck, gently threading her fingers through his hair. William buried his face against her hair, whispering quiet words that mingled with the room's warm hush. Their movements were filled with a love and yearning that felt undeniable.

Julia let herself be swept away, tilting her head back as William kissed along the curve of her neck. Her breath quickened, and a pleasant shiver ran through her as his hands slid around her waist, holding her even closer. Every touch spoke volumes about the depth of their feelings.

William drew Julia in again, his lips finding hers in a hungry kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck, rising on her tiptoes to deepen it further.

In a sudden, playful surge, William grabbed at the fabric of her dress, pulling it free in one swift motion. Julia gasped softly and stepped back, her eyes bright with affection and laughter. She ran her fingers through her hair, biting her lip just a little.

"You're quite the daredevil, aren't you?" she teased, her voice carrying a hint of excitement.

William grinned, a playful light in his eyes. "Only when it comes to you, Julia."

She approached him, her heels tapping on the floor, a confident smile on her lips. "I like it when you're a daredevil," she whispered, letting her hand trace along his jaw.

William caught that hand, kissing each fingertip, his eyes never leaving hers.

The room pulsed with an undeniable energy. Julia, not to be outdone, began to undo the buttons of his shirt, her fingers trailing over his chest in a deliberate, teasing way. She paused, meeting his gaze with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

William's breath hitched slightly, mesmerized by her every move. He could feel the warmth of her touch, the gentle pressure of her fingers, sending pleasant shivers through him. He admired the way she looked at him—those intense eyes that seemed to know his every secret, that held promises of an unspoken depth between them.

She finished unbuttoning his shirt and let it slip to the floor, reaching up to brush her hands across his chest. He covered her hands with his own, guiding them gently.

"You have no idea how much I've missed this," William murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "Just being close to you again."

Julia smiled, her lips brushing his skin as she replied. "Every time we're apart, it's like I'm missing a part of myself."

William closed his eyes for a moment, soaking it all in. "I've dreamt of this so many times."

Julia's smile turned playful. "Dreams are good," she said, her hands moving to the buckle of his belt, "but reality is better."

William inhaled sharply when she undid the belt, and then, with a gentle tug, he brought her in for a searing kiss that poured out all the love and longing he'd felt. Julia responded in kind, winding her arms around his neck, pressing herself against him. They stumbled toward the bed in a blur of hurried steps and soft laughter, never breaking the kiss.

Once they reached the bed, William eased her down onto the mattress. They exchanged tender caresses, letting themselves revel in the closeness they'd both craved. Their earlier laughter gave way to a gentler sort of intimacy, punctuated by half-whispered words and comfortable silences.

Neither rushed the moment; they let it unfold with an unhurried sweetness. William brushed a stray strand of hair from Julia's face, regarding her as though committing every feature to memory.

"You're beautiful," William whispered, his voice low with emotion. "More beautiful than I remember."

Julia smiled, her eyes warm and affectionate. "You're not so bad yourself," she teased.

They lingered in a kiss that was less about urgency now, more about savoring each other's nearness. William lightly traced his fingertips along Julia's arm, drawing a soft smile from her as she pulled him closer.

Time seemed to slow as the two of them cherished every gentle contact, every whispered endearment. A soft lamp glow bathed them in warmth, bringing a comforting hush over the room.

"I don't want this to end," Julia admitted, voice fragile yet resolute.

William pressed his forehead to hers. "It doesn't have to," he said quietly. "I'm not going anywhere."

Julia closed her eyes, breathing in the familiar, reassuring scent of him. "I've waited so long for this… for us."

He answered with a tender kiss on her temple. For a moment, neither spoke; the steady sound of their heartbeats filled the silence. Slowly, their kisses grew deeper, but they remained gentle—lips exploring, hands drifting with a warmth that felt both new and deeply familiar.

Eventually, they let the world fade out around them, lost in soft caresses and whispered promises. The light in the room flickered, shadows dancing on the walls as they held each other close. Their quiet laughter and contented sighs spoke of a mutual understanding—this was what they'd been waiting for.

When they finally settled, it was in each other's arms. William gently pulled Julia against him. She nestled her head on his chest, tracing lazy patterns across his skin.

"That was…" Julia began, her voice soft and breathless.

"No words," William finished, his voice an almost inaudible rumble. He placed a tender kiss on her forehead, brushing a gentle hand through her hair.

They lay still, absorbed in the warmth that passed between them. Julia listened to William's heartbeat, steady and calming, perfectly in tune with her own. He loved this quiet aftermath, where no words were necessary—only the comforting lull of contentment.

In that moment, nothing else mattered but being together, hearts aligned, enveloped in the peaceful glow of what they both knew was real and lasting.

After a while, Julia propped herself up on one elbow, looking down at William with a soft smile. "So, what do you think of our little getaway so far?" she asked, her voice gentle and warm.

William looked up at her, his eyes still heavy with satisfaction. "I think it's perfect," he replied, his voice barely more than a whisper.

Their time together was a reminder of how strong and unbreakable their connection was, and how no matter what challenges they faced, they always came back to each other. Moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating their silhouettes, as if the rest of the world had vanished and left them alone. Julia stifled a quiet laugh when William whispered something that made her cheeks burn. "With you, every moment is incredible," she replied, giving him a look that spoke louder than words.

They stayed wrapped up in each other until dawn, listening to the sound of their own hearts, finding in that moment everything they needed: each other. The world outside could wait, this night was theirs.

At daybreak, a loud shout came from the garden, jerking them awake. William leapt up, and Julia quickly followed. Out on the lawn, they found a woman's body, one of the inn's guests. She was young and had come for an international experts' conference to share insights on Victorian art research.

Julia sighed, eyeing the scene. "Does something always have to happen when we finally try to have a peaceful weekend?" she asked wryly, folding her arms and glancing at William.

He gave her a light-hearted grin. "Seems like we're destined for these kinds of adventures, Julia." Then his expression turned serious. "I'll help the local police figure out what happened. But I promise, I'll do my best to keep the rest of our weekend as calm as possible."

Julia nodded, half amused, half resigned. "All right. But first let's see what exactly went down here. The body can tell us a lot, if we look close enough."

William looked at her with admiration. "Your expertise is always invaluable. Let's get started."

With Julia's help, she examined the body thoroughly, noting subtle signs of poisoning, William quickly suspected the victim might've been involved in illegal activities tied to antique dealing. Julia spotted traces of some chemical on the victim's skin and subtle changes in her appearance that suggested a slow poisoning. "Could've been something she inhaled or ingested," she said, hinting that the poison might've been administered in a less obvious way.

William went through the victim's belongings, finding a key to a safety deposit box and a notebook full of mysterious names and addresses. Each page seemed like a clue pointing to large-scale criminal activity linked to forging and selling antiques. "This wasn't just a random murder," William told Julia, showing her the notebook. "Someone's trying to cover up a huge art-world scandal."

They interviewed the other inn guests, including one of the conference organizers who avoided eye contact and kept changing the subject. Julia spotted his nervous fidgeting and illogical answers, which pushed them to dig deeper into his connection with the victim. Eventually, they uncovered that the murderer was someone who wanted to bury their actions to keep a massive scandal from going public. With William and Julia's teamwork and expertise, they gathered enough evidence to expose the truth and hand it all over to the local police.

The last day of their stay went by peacefully. After the drama of the murder case, they could finally relax, strolling through the scenic hills and enjoying tea on the terrace overlooking the garden. They chatted about everything, agreeing that these rare, quiet moments were priceless. "Even in the prettiest places, life can throw us a curveball," Julia mused with a gentle smile, looking at William. "But it's nice to know we can always count on each other."

When the weekend ended, the Murdochs headed back to London with memories brimming with emotion and closeness. At their doorstep, Susannah was there to greet them, squealing with joy the moment she saw them. William picked her up, spinning her around while Julia watched with a tender smile. She gathered them both into a hug, her heart feeling at ease now that they were together again.

Ruby stood by, leaning on the doorframe, smiling broadly. "Long time no see, William," she teased, cocking an eyebrow jokingly before coming over to say hi to her brother-in-law. "I hope you didn't let Julia forget all her responsibilities," she added with a mischievous grin, making William laugh.

"Ruby, I can't thank you enough for looking after Susannah," he said, smiling, as Susannah, back on the floor, tugged his hand to show him a new drawing she'd made while they were away. Julia gave her sister a grateful look, feeling warmth flood her heart. "Honestly, we don't know what we'd do without you," she said with a smile. "We really needed some time off, and your help was a lifesaver." Ruby waved her off. "Oh, come on, Juli. It was my pleasure. Besides, Susannah's an angel, just gotta keep up with her." Julia laughed, her eyes showing just how much she appreciated her sister's presence in their lives.

At last, the family was back together.
