We kept moving at full sail, heading out to the open sea after rescuing my sister and leaving Jack to cover us as we ran. I made my way towards Elizabeth and Will, talking alone on the forecastle as Gibbs shook his head.
"Three women on board? A man don't have to be superstitious to know that's trouble." Gibbs mumbled to himself.
"Quiet Gibbs. We all set out to rescue a woman. You should have thought of this before we left." I told him before continuing to my destination. I got to them as Elizabeth was giving Will the medallion and finished her tale.
"... you were in danger ... so I took the medallion. And I've kept it ever since. They thought I was you, that they needed my blood. And it didn't work." She told him as he took the medallion.
"Why would my father send this to me?" Will asked.
"To keep it away from them?" I offered, letting them know I was here. "No pirate would sail to London, for fear of Execution Dock."
"If I had known-" Will started saying but Elizabeth cut him off.
"- then we never would have met." She reminded him. Will nodded at her words and they held each other's gaze for a moment. Will turned away first and I rolled my eyes as he leaned on the rail looking out back the way we came.
"I can't believe he would make such a sacrifice for us." Will said thinking of Jack. I looked back the way we came thinking of the pirate we left behind.
"I guess you can never truly know someone else's heart." Elizabeth said.
"No. We don't." I agreed before moving up to the helm. Once there I noticed Gibbs peering forward, scanning the horizon. I followed his gazed to see a tiny island in front of us.
"Shift your heading, steer clear of that island. Fifteen degrees starboard." Gibbs told AnaMaria who did as she was told. I watched the ocean pass us by and thought about what was to happen to us once we reached Port Royal. Will and I helped Jack escape prison and that was a crime against the crown. At best we'd be pardoned by either my father or Commodore Norrington who was very fond of my sister or we'd be put to death. I wouldn't hold my breath on a rescue from the two men.
"Nicole." I turned to Gibbs to see him and AnaMaria looking out and followed their gaze to see black sails. The Black Pearl had caught up to us.
"Can we outrun them?" AnaMaria asked us.
"We couldn't even run away from them when we had a head start." I told her.
"Make for the reef." Gibbs told her and she immediately turned the ship towards the reef. We moved as quickly as we could towards the island, but it wasn't fast enough.
"How can they be catching up to us?" Elizabeth asked as she and Will joined us.
"They have the wind on their side." Gibbs told her.
"Then we must stand and fight." Will told him.
"Drop the forward anchor on the starboard side and ready the cannons. Drop anything else we don't need to try and gain speed." I ordered and they all gave me curious look. "Element of surprise. Barbosa will never suspect we'd try and fight them and if we happen to gain some speed then that might not be so bad either." I explained.
"You're mad." AnaMaria told me and I smiled at her.
"Maybe I am." I told her.
"Mad like Jack." Gibbs said smiling at me before repeating my orders to the crew. I watched as a sailor at the stern of the ship pulled a release, and the ship's anchor raced down into the water, the metal chain jumping and twisting on deck. The chain stopped, and the Sailor locked it.
"Hold on!" I called out as the forward momentum of the anchor dropping and stopping us turned the Interceptor, making us pivot around the anchor. "Release the wheel!" I told AnaMaria and she did so and we turned even quicker. Once we stopped turning and were even with the Black Pearl the men got the cannons ready and we all watched each other closely. They had their cannons ready as we did. Everyone was silent for a moment before I heard someone on their ship shout. "Fire!" I ordered followed by Will, Elizabeth and Gibbs and all the cannons fired at once creating a loud roaring sound that filled the air, but that didn't matter. Cannonballs rained down on both ships.
"Captain! We're taking on water!" one of the crew called up and I hit the railing in front of me. We would sink and if we didn't get off this ship now we'd all die. I watched as sailors dove for cover, leaving their cannons; clearly we were overmatched and out gunned.
"Damn it." I mumbled to myself as another round of fire was shot at us.
"Looks like they mean to send us under." AnaMaria said.
"There - she's raised the Jolly Roger, upside down." Gibbs said and I looked up to see the flag and sighed before hanging my head.
"Then we only have one option." I told him. Will looked at the rest of us confused wanting an explanation.
"It's a signal. If we resist, it won't just be death. There'll be torture as well." Gibbs told him and he looked at all of us, knowing what we were all thinking.
"We're not going to just surrender!" Will said angrily, looking from Gibbs to me and finally to Elizabeth.
"That we are." I told him as the Black Pearl fired again at us. They had shot a double-ball shot with a chain connecting the two. It hit the main mast dead on and a cracking sound could be heard as it fell to the deck. Barbossa moved his ship alongside ours, preparing to board.
"We can at least fight - we might be able to kill a few-" Will tried again.
"Will - it'll go worse for us - for Elizabeth and Nicole, especially - if we fight." Gibbs told him. Will stared at him before looking to me then finally to Elizabeth and nodded his expression still defiant to the orders. The deck slanted as the ship continued to sink and the pirates swarmed across on ropes to take control of the Interceptor. They moved us all to the Black Pearl and we all watched as the top masts of the H.M.S. Interceptor sank into the smooth crystal waters of the Caribbean. They brought us all before Barbossa and stared in shock at Jack standing beside him manacled. Gibbs, AnaMaria and Cotton as well as the others we'd hired from Tortuga were all huddled together and Barbossa's wrathful gaze turned to my sister.
"Welcome back, Miss. Last time on board, you played me right clever, make pretending and all. I hope your stay this time is more pleasant. Boys, show her some hospitality!" Barbossa ordered shoving her into a group of his pirates and they all yelled their approval as they passed her from one to the other.
"No! Let her go! Leave her alone!" I ordered as Barbossa laughed. Will then head-butted the pirate behind him and grabbed a pistol, waving it at the pirates surrounding our men.
"She goes free!" he ordered leaping up onto the ship's rail. He steadied himself with a hand on the rigging as he pointed the pistol at Barbossa.
"What's in your head, boy?" Barbossa asked him.
"She. Goes. Free." He ordered again.
"You've got one shot - and we can't die." Barbossa told him.
"You can't. I can." Will said leaning out over the ocean.
"No!" Elizabeth shouted trying to go to him from the men holding her as Jack pushed forward.
"Will - don't do anything stupid! Don't say anything stupid –" Jack pleaded with him.
"My name is Will Turner, the son of Bootstrap Bill Turner. His blood runs in my veins." Will said raising the gun to his head. "You need my blood. And on my word I will pull this trigger, and sink all the way down to Davy Jones' Locker!" he declared and the pirates all murmured behind us in surprise.
"It's true - he's the spittin' image of old Bootstrap. Even talks the same!" one of the pirates called out and I watched as Jack dropped his head and Barbossa grinned at him.
"Looks like you're back to having nothing to offer." Barbossa told him and I looked between them confused, but never saying anything.
"And hers got Old Bill's courage. A curse on him, and you!" another pirate called out as Barbossa stepped forward.
"Enough of that!" Barbossa called to his men before turning to Will. "Name your terms."
"Elizabeth goes free!" Will ordered pointing his gun to the two of us before pointing it back at himself.
"We got that part. Anything else?" Barbossa asked him.
"And Jack and Nicole. And the crew. Free and unharmed. If you agree... then... I will remain with you." Will told him. Barbossa considered his terms and we all waited for his final decision.
"Agreed. You have my word, as a gentleman of fortune –" Barbossa started saying but Elizabeth stopped his words.
"Will - you can't trust him." She told him.
"You must swear by the Holy Bible." Will told him and he rolled his eyes.
"Eh? You have my word, then - on the Good Book, I do swear, and the Lord spare my worthless soul." Barbossa crossed himself, as do many of his men. Will waited a few moments before lowering his gun and stepping down. The pirates swarmed him, snatching away the pistol and holding him in place. "Boatswain! Take your captives belowdecks. Chain them in the galley, and teach 'em how to row." Gibbs and the other's from Tortuga were taken away under guard as Barbossa looked towards the island we'd tried to seek refuge at. "Hah. Look there. That's the very same island we made Jack governor of on our last trip. When you sail the open sea as long as I, you learn to trust the signs fate sends your way."
"Amen to that..." Gibbs said before he was taken below deck.
"Jack, Elizabeth, Nicole ... I'm a man of my word and you're to be set free, right quick." Barbossa told us. "Men, break out the plank!" a cheer rang through his men and Will began to struggle with his captors.
"No! You gave your word!" Will shouted at him.
"Quiet, boy, or you'll lose your tongue. Those as know me know I wouldn't cross my word, and bring down bad luck on the ship." Barbossa said before nodding. "I agreed to set them free. I didn't say when. .. nor where." They moved the ship closer to the islet and bound created a line of those of us who were to walk the plank. Jack was first, his wrists bound then me and lastly Elizabeth.
"It's pure evil to make a Captain walk the plank of his own ship, twice in one lifetime. No good can come of it." Jack warned him.
"Now, Jack. That reef is less than a league distant. It's a square deal all around, and you can't hope for better." Barbossa told him.
"Someone needs to cut these bonds, then." Jack said. Barbossa smiled at him and showed a pistol before pointing it at Jack. I struggled slightly before feeling a knife at my throat.
"Wait your turn." The pirate holding me said.
"You'd best take a swim, Jack." Barbossa warned him.
"The last time you did this, you left me a pistol, with one shot." Jack told him and the pirates around us muttered in agreement.
"That's proper, sir, according to the code." One of his men said.
"By the Powers, you're right!" he said before turning around. "Where's Jack's pistol? Who's got it? Bring it forward!"
"A gentleman might give us three pistols, seeing as there are three of us, this time." Jack tried as a pirate handed Jack's pistol to Barbossa.
"Tell you what. I'll give you one pistol, and let you be the gentleman, an' shoot one of the ladies, and starve to death with the other!" Barbossa said grinning. "That is, presuming you're not all drownded." The pirates all laughed. "Wonder which you'll choose." Barbossa then tossed Jack's pistol over his head and down into the water with a splash. "So how did you get off that island, anyway?"
"You can go to your grave not knowing." Jack told him.
"That's fair." Barbossa said as Jack glared at him. Barbossa's man prodded with a cutlass making Jack step out to the end of the plank and walked off. We heard him plunge into the water and flounder on the surface causing Elizabeth, Will and I to share a helpless look. There was nothing we could do to either stop this from happening or help him. "The lady's next." He said and I moved towards the plank and stared down at a floundering Jack.
"See you in hell Barbossa." I said before jumping into the ocean with Jack, my sister following soon after.
