When we finally got to the city surface again, Alice quickly got as far away from us as possible while staying away from the edge. She grabbed onto a tree stump and held onto it for dear life.
"Whoa!"
"Where do you think you're going?" Hatter asked her and she quickly spun around and back away from us as we made our way closer to her.
"Anywhere but here!"
"There are no go areas in this town."
"We have to leave before they use the elevator and get to us," I told her.
"But I don't believe this is happening! I mean this place... you people..." I felt my heartbreak at those words. "This is all too weird!"
"Listen, calm down. I'm going to try and get you home," Hatter told her.
"Really?" She asked him unbelievingly.
"Yes! Really!" She went around the stump again to get away from Hatter as he moved around the large stump to talk to her. "Could you just keep still?"
"And what's in it for you?" Alice asked him angrily. "Let me guess, you want your usual cut upfront?"
"I don't blame you for being angry," he told her.
"Make that two of us," I reminded him.
"I acted impetuously..."
"Selfishly," she corrected. "You acted selfishly."
"Whatever word you wanna... use. Let me make it up to the two of ya," he requested. "Alice, this is a dangerous place. Especially with Princess Gwendoline by your side. Trust me, you're gonna need my help."
"He's not wrong, Alice. I haven't been back to this place since I was a child and my aunt will try and remove my head if she finds us. Having Hatter will help us will be good."
"Fine," she finally agreed and we left the city.
"The Looking Glass is the only way to get you home," Hatter told Alice as we followed him. "And it is here in the city, but it's the most heavily guarded piece of kit in the whole of Wonderland."
"I have to find Jack first," Alice reminded him.
"Have you not heard a word I said?" Hatter asked her, turning to her.
"Look, I don't know how he got mixed up in this, but I know he's not a thief," Alice insisted. "He was trying to surprise me, or sweep me off my feet... so somehow he got a hold of this ring and it has landed him in a pile of trouble."
"Jack is a good guy, Hatter," I added. "If we can help him and get the others out of here, maybe Wonderland can begin to heal."
"If it wasn't for me, he'd be home safe."
"We don't know that for sure, Alice," I tried reassuring her.
"How did he get hold of it?" Hatter asked curiously.
"Well, I don't know," Alice said going around Hatter then going back to the wall again. "The point is, I'm the only one who can get him out of this mess.
"How do you figure that out?" Hatter asked her.
"Well, I got the ring, I can use it to negotiate his release," Alice told us.
"Alice, we can't give the Queen of Hearts the Stone of Wonderland," I reminded her. "It was kept away from the Looking Glass for good reason."
"You should really listen to your sister," Hatter told her.
"If my aunt gets her hands on that ring then it's game over for your people. She'll bring people in here by the thousands. More children while lose their parents."
"She's right," Hatter told her. "You can't negotiate with the Queen. She's crazy. You have to cut your losses. You get the hell out of here while you still can."
"No, I can't just abandon Jack. He is innocent," Alice said. "And besides I like him."
"Oh, you like him?" Hatter asked her.
"You were going to break up with him before we fell in the Looking Glass," I reminded her.
"Yes, I like him," she told us giving me a look. Hatter passed her and we continued walking towards wherever Hatter was leading us. "A lot!"
"Trust me, I know a thing or two about liking people," Hatter told us. "And in time, after much chocolate and cream cake, like turns into what was his name again."
"No, not in my world," Alice corrected and I gave her another look. "Look, I have a bad record with liking guys."
"It's quite the record," I reminded her and she glared at me.
"There's a shock," Hatter sighed before turning and walking away again.
"And this is the first one that meant anything," Alice told him. "There is no way I am going to give him up now." Hatter stopped us from going forward and I heard a voice saying something.
"Stay close," he told us and we quietly moved forward and hid behind a telephone booth.
"Hey! Look at me! Did you see them?" When the man with a white rabbit head didn't get an answer he threw him over the edge of the sidewalk before moving onto the next guy. We saw the man who had led us to Hatter talking with a guy who had a clover behind his head.
"You work with rats you become one, eh?" Hatter asked angrily.
"What is that thing?" Alice asked looking at the white rabbit guy.
"Nothing I've ever seen before," Hatter told us. "Wait..." The white rabbit turned towards us. "It can't be."
"Who is it?" I asked him as the rabbit head started walking down the steps of the tea shop and we backed away slowly before running to a safer part of the city. Hatter stopped running behind us and I turned to look at him.
"What is it?" I asked him.
"We should run." We turned and ran even faster than before. "Run! Quickly!" We ran along a wide sidewalk before running through an alleyway and down a ramp towards the river. "Down here. My smuggling boat. Quickly!" We all climbed in the boat as Hatter tried starting it twice with no luck. "Hang on, there's a knack to this." He tried it again. "Which apparently I never learned." He jumped to the front of the boat and turned the key. "Come on!" The boat finally started and Hatter pulled away from the city and into the open water.
