Chapter 4
The mall was alive with the sound of laughter, chatter, and the hum of footsteps echoing through its wide corridors. Toward the center, near the bustling food court, sat Bean There, Brewed That, a quirky coffee bar with vibrant yellow and teal accents that made it stand out. Tables with colorful umbrellas dotted the area around the bar, giving the space a cozy, inviting vibe.
Bubbles and Robin were already seated at the table closest to the coffee bar, chatting animatedly as Robin nibbled on a muffin from behind the counter. Her work uniform—a pair of black jeans and a crisp white shirt with the coffee bar's logo embroidered over the pocket—looked effortlessly cool on her. Bubbles twirled a strand of her blonde hair around her finger, practically glowing with excitement.
When Blossom and Buttercup arrived, Bubbles waved them over enthusiastically. "Hey, girls! Over here!"
Buttercup dropped into a chair with her usual relaxed swagger, tossing her bag onto the ground. Blossom sat down more primly, her sharp eyes immediately scanning the mall's layout as if calculating every detail.
"Nice spot," Buttercup commented, stretching her legs out and glancing at Robin. "How's the glamorous coffee bar life treating you?"
Robin smirked, resting her elbows on the table. "Living the dream, obviously. But it's not bad—decent tips, and the people-watching is top-notch."
As Blossom pulled a folder from her bag and started organizing her notes, Bubbles clasped her hands together, practically bouncing in her seat. "So, I have news!"
Buttercup raised an eyebrow. "What kind of news?"
Robin leaned in, her grin widening. "She already told me, but you guys are going to love it."
Bubbles beamed, the excitement spilling out of her. "I have a job interview today! At Paws & Claws, the pet shop on the second floor!"
Buttercup's face broke into a wide grin. "No way! That's awesome, Bubs!"
Robin nodded in agreement. "She's going to crush it. I mean, who wouldn't want to hire her?"
Blossom, however, paused mid-sentence, her brow furrowing. "Bubbles, don't you think it's a little early to start working? Junior year is crucial—we need to be focused on our studies."
Robin frowned, leaning back in her chair. "Oh, come on, Blossom. Working is good for her. She's building her resume, just like you're always talking about. Besides, it's part-time. She can handle it."
Buttercup shot Blossom a look—a subtle but unmistakable expression that said, Chill out. "Yeah, what Robin said. Not to mention, I'm thinking about applying to Varsity Gear. I could save up for something cool, like a motorcycle."
Blossom blinked, taken aback. "A motorcycle? Really, Buttercup?"
Buttercup shrugged nonchalantly, leaning back in her chair with a smirk. "Why not? It's practical—and awesome."
Bubbles smiled brightly at Buttercup. "Thank you! I think it'll be fun to work at the mall, and Robin's already here. It's perfect!"
Robin chuckled, giving Bubbles a thumbs-up. Buttercup turned her attention back to Blossom, raising an eyebrow pointedly.
Blossom sighed, clearly outnumbered, and mustered a reluctant smile. "Congratulations, Bubbles. I'm sure you'll do great."
Bubbles' face lit up even more. "Thanks, Blossom!"
Eager to shift the conversation, Blossom adjusted her glasses and cleared her throat. "Anyway, speaking of things to keep an eye on... What's our plan for the boys?"
Buttercup groaned, her expression shifting into a playful grimace. "Seriously? We're at the mall, and you're still thinking about them?"
Blossom's tone remained firm. "We need to stay vigilant. Who knows what they're up to when we're not around?"
Robin smirked, leaning her chin on her hand. "You sound like their parole officer."
Buttercup snorted with laughter, and Bubbles giggled, the tension from earlier fading away.
Blossom sighed but couldn't help smiling faintly. "I'm just saying we can't let our guard down."
"Noted," Buttercup replied, her voice dripping with mock seriousness before turning back to Robin and Bubbles with a grin. "Now, tell me more about this job interview. You're totally going to nail it, Bubs."
Bubbles' cheeks flushed with excitement as she animatedly described the job and her potential responsibilities. Her hands danced in the air as she spoke, her enthusiasm drawing smiles from Robin and Buttercup. Blossom, however, sat with her head down, the steady scratch of her pen against paper a stark contrast to the lively energy at the table. She let out a soft sigh, saying nothing, as she meticulously revised and edited her notes.
Bubbles glanced at the clock on the mall's polished wall, her expression shifting from excitement to determination. Taking a deep breath, she stood up, smoothing the front of her uniform skirt. Robin followed suit, brushing imaginary crumbs off her uniform.
"Want me to go with you?" Robin asked, her voice warm and supportive. "I can close up for a bit."
Bubbles shook her head, her blonde pigtails swaying. "No, I don't want to inconvenience you. I'll be fine." Her face brightened as she added, "But… could you have a mocha latte ready for me when I get back?"
Robin grinned, pulling her into a quick, tight hug. "You got it. Knock 'em dead, Bubs."
As Bubbles prepared to leave, Buttercup suddenly stood, stretching her arms over her head with a casual yawn. Bubbles blinked at her in confusion, her bright blue eyes mirrored by Robin and Blossom.
Buttercup shrugged, tucking her hands into her jacket pockets. "The pet store's close to that sports shop I want to apply for. Might as well do it now."
Bubbles' face lit up, her nervousness momentarily forgotten. "Really? That's awesome!"
With a confident nod, Buttercup followed her sister toward the escalators leading to the second floor. Robin waved after them, her voice cutting through the buzz of mall chatter. "Good luck! You both got this!"
Blossom, however, simply shook her head as her sisters disappeared into the crowd, muttering under her breath about priorities. She flipped through her notes, her lips pursed in disapproval.
Robin leaned against the coffee bar, crossing her arms. "You know, you can really be mean sometimes."
Blossom froze, her pen halting mid-sentence. She looked up, her wide eyes meeting Robin's steady gaze. "What?"
Robin straightened, placing her hands on her hips. "You heard me. Bubbles was so excited about this job, and you totally dampened the mood. You know how sensitive she is. And what's the deal with this morning? I heard what you said to Buttercup and Bubbles about someone having to go to college. What, just because some of us aren't taking Advanced Everything like you are, we're not college material?"
Blossom stammered, her cheeks flushing a deep red. "N-No, I didn't mean it like that—"
Robin cut her off, her voice firm but not unkind. "Save it, Blossom. I've been your friend since you three were created. I love you all like sisters, but unlike Bubbles, who keeps her anger bottled up, I'm going to tell you like it is."
Blossom opened her mouth to reply, but Robin turned away, her attention snagged by a customer approaching the coffee bar. Robin quickly slipped into her professional demeanor, taking the order with a polite smile. Blossom sat in awkward silence, fiddling with the corner of her notebook, the weight of Robin's words sinking in.
Moments later, Robin returned and set a steaming cup of coffee in front of Blossom. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sugary notes of the mall's food court.
"Two sugars, one creamer," Robin said simply, her tone softened but still firm. "You may piss me off sometimes, but you'll always get coffee on the house."
Blossom glanced up, her lips parting as if to speak, but Robin had already turned back to tend to the growing line of customers. Left alone, Blossom stared down at the coffee, her reflection rippling faintly in the dark liquid. She tapped her pen against her notebook, Robin's words echoing in her mind.
Had she really hurt Bubbles' feelings?
Blossom sighed, guilt gnawing at her. She adjusted her glasses and turned back to her notes, though the words blurred on the page.
For the first time, she wasn't entirely sure what to do next.
Bubbles walked hand-in-hand with Buttercup as they made their way to Paws & Claws, the pet store where her interview was scheduled. The shop had a cozy, inviting charm, with large glass windows showcasing playful pet toys, colorful aquariums, and a big "Now Hiring" sign written in cheerful lettering. Just before Bubbles entered, she turned to Buttercup, her blue eyes shining with a mix of nerves and excitement.
"Wish me luck!" Bubbles said, throwing her arms around Buttercup for a quick hug.
Buttercup hugged her back tightly, patting her head. "You've got this, Bubs. Knock 'em dead."
As Bubbles disappeared inside, Buttercup lingered near the entrance. She leaned against the railing of the second-floor walkway, gazing out at the mall crowd. Buttercup wasn't the sentimental type, but she knew how much this meant to Bubbles. Leaving before hearing about the interview wasn't an option—it'd break her sister's heart if she didn't stay to celebrate or console her afterward.
Thirty minutes later, Robin and Blossom arrived. Robin held a frothy iced latte in one hand while Blossom walked beside her, her face unusually subdued, as if carrying the weight of earlier conversations. Buttercup raised an eyebrow at the two of them.
Robin broke the silence first, giving a mischievous smirk. "Don't worry. The Ice Queen here is going to apologize. And I'm here to celebrate because I already know Bubbles crushed it. Plus, I'm on my break, so this works out perfectly."
Buttercup chuckled. "Ice Queen? That's fitting. I might start calling her that too—especially since she has actual ice powers."
Blossom's cheeks turned crimson, but she didn't bite back, opting to cross her arms and look away.
After another ten minutes of waiting, the glass doors of Paws & Claws swung open, and Bubbles emerged. Her face was glowing, and her blue ponytails bounced as she practically skipped toward them. Robin immediately stepped forward, her energy matching Bubbles'.
"Well? Tell us!" Robin urged, practically bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"I GOT THE JOB!" Bubbles squealed, throwing her arms around Robin.
Robin screamed in delight and hugged her tightly before handing over the latte she had prepared earlier. "This is for my favorite new pet shop employee!"
Blossom took a step forward, her expression softening. She placed a hand on Bubbles' shoulder. "I'm happy for you, Bubbles. Really. Congratulations. And if you ever fall behind on homework, I'm here to help, okay?"
Bubbles' smile widened as she hugged Blossom tightly. "Thank you, Blossom! That means a lot!"
Buttercup gave her a thumbs-up. "I knew you'd get it. Great job, Bubs."
Robin nudged Buttercup playfully. "Your turn now. Let's get that sports shop job locked in."
The girls followed Buttercup as she led the way to Varsity Gear, the mall's spacious sports shop. The store was buzzing with activity, its walls lined with gleaming sports equipment, racks of jerseys, and shelves of running shoes. The smell of fresh rubber and leather filled the air. While Bubbles and Blossom took in the impressive size of the store, Buttercup strode in confidently, as if she owned the place.
Two tall, athletic red-haired guys approached them. Both had green eyes, sharp jawlines, and easygoing smiles that instantly drew wearing a referee shirt and black slacks.
"Buttercup! What's up?" one of them said.
"Adam, Ashton," Buttercup greeted with a nod. "Are you guys hiring?"
Adam, the more boisterous of the twins, clapped his hands together. "Are we hiring? As acting manager—"
"Acting manager for five more hours," Ashton corrected with a smirk.
"—as acting manager," Adam continued, ignoring his brother, "I'm making the executive decision. Buttercup, consider yourself hired!"
Ashton laughed. "We'll see you tomorrow after school. Black, blue jeans or leggings, we'll provide the shirt."
Buttercup nodded, fist-bumping both guys before turning back to her sisters and Robin.
As they exited the shop, Bubbles gave Buttercup a curious look. "Wait, how do you know those guys?"
Buttercup shrugged. "Adam and Ashton Lane. They went to school with us. They were two grades ahead. I made friends with them back in middle school. They're pretty chill. Adam's in college wants to be a high school football coach. Ashton's on a volleyball scholarship. Annoying sometimes, but good dudes."
Robin gasped dramatically. "Buttercup, those guys are so hot. Are you seriously this oblivious? How are you surrounded by guys like that and not swooning?"
Buttercup rolled her eyes. "I'm starving. Are we eating here or heading home?"
Bubbles piped up. "I need to adjust to eating here since I'm going to work here, so let's eat here."
Robin grinned. "I'm stuck at the coffee bar, so can you grab me something? I'll pay you back later."
Blossom sighed. "How about that new Chinese restaurant?"
Bubbles perked up. "There's a vegetarian Chinese spot nearby. Let's go there!"
The group agreed and returned with takeout, sitting at their usual table near the coffee bar. As Robin munched on her meal between customers, the girls laughed, chatted, and even managed to start on their homework.
Their first day of school may have started on a rocky note, but as the day wound down, the sisters and their friend celebrated their small victories, their bond growing even stronger.
A/N So I have done like six chapters ahead of time I might as well post them. Understand because I am in my last semester of college I may or may not have more time to post. I do want to have more than one chapter posted when I do post so it might take some time for me to upload. I hope you guys enjoy comment and review.
