Calm Shores - Travels of a snowflake

It felt like a distant memory, yet still fresh in his mind at the same time. He could still hear her voice in his thoughts, like she was still there, echoing her playful taunting at him when they were together.

He had no idea that he'd fallen so deeply in love with her until he had to watch her leave his world behind, shattering the cursed mirror into a thousand shards.

He remembered the feeling of watching his entire world fall apart right before his very eyes, and there was nothing he could've done to stop it from happening.

He thought that he'd get to spend the rest of his life with her, especially after that kiss he shared with her. He should've known something was up when she started crying.

He should've known…

He should've done something about it…

"Please Darling, don't grieve over me, and find someone to love." She whispered into his ear, before stepping back towards the mirror. He was so stunned by her words that he couldn't even stop her from shattering the mirror after she stepped through into the Twilight world.

Then he was alone, left standing at the alter.

He wasn't sure how long he stayed there, the harsh desert winds blowing against his face, but he couldn't feel anything. When he eventually left, returning to Hyrule Castle with Zelda, he'd grown quiet.

The Princess, now officially crowned the Queen, spent the rest of her time trying to fix the damage done to her kingdom during the what would come to be known as the Twilight era. She had officially crowned Link as her royal guard, and had named him the Hero of Hyrule for his critical role in slaying Ganondorf and stopping the evil wizard Zant.

She knew that despite his title as Royal knight now, she had no control over him at all. If he ever so chose to, he could leave her side, or even Hyrule all together. If anything, his title had been given to him as a sign of respect for his efforts.

Yet despite this, she had presumed that he would return to his quaint little village on the outskirts of the kingdom, but he didn't. Instead, the Hero quietly stayed by her side, aiding her in whatever endeavors she took upon herself.

She had been there when Midna had left his side, shattering the Mirror of Twilight. She had heard what she had said to him before departing, and had presumed that he'd decided to try and find love with her.

But it had been nothing but a dream in her mind, for upon returning to Hyrule, the man had become despondent and reserved. His staying by her side was merely to keep himself busy, and he had displayed little to no interest in returning to his hometown.

It seemed that no matter where he looked, where he went, he was reminded of the little imp that had stolen his heart.

She tried to help him as best she could, keeping him busy with quests and tasks to help take his mind off of her. She had hoped that in between helping restore her kingdom and fix all that had been broken that he would eventually forget about her, that he could finally move on…

That maybe, maybe he could find love in her.

But she had misjudged his capacity to love, and just how broken he'd become from losing the one he'd fallen for.

It wasn't made any easier for him due to her actions that day. By naming him the Hero of the kingdom, the one responsible for saving Hyrule, she alienated him. Now, no matter who he would meet, or who seemed to show interest in him, it was merely because of what he'd done and the title attributed to him, and not for who he was.

No one wanted to marry Link the farmer boy turned Hero…

No.

They wanted to marry the Hero of Hyrule chosen by the goddess, claiming all the glory attributed to him for themselves. After all, whoever married him would surely grow in political power.

He learned this the hard way when traveling through the Castle Town one day, young girls all flocking to his side. It had quickly become apparent to him that they weren't interested in him as a person, but his role as the chosen Hero.

It eventually got to a point where he'd immediately turn any woman away if they even attempted to court him, not caring for their feelings or reasons for seeking him out.

Zelda feared that he would never fall in love, and Midna's last wishes for him would never come to be. Worried for him, she began teaching him in the ways of a noble. He complained as much as she expected him to, but he went along with it nonetheless.

The reason behind this?

She deduced that if he wouldn't find love in Hyrule, then he needed to look elsewhere. It was why she began going on trips outside of the kingdom, always bringing him along.

It was her hope that if she eventually threw enough people at him that he'd one day fall for one.

That was how he ended up attending Queen Elsa's coronation in Arendel. The moment she saw the newly crowned woman by herself, she knew she had to get the two of them alone.

He knew what she was doing, because it was something she'd been trying to do for some time. But this time, he felt a spark of excitement shoot through him when he met the young Queen.

He'd been worried at first, afraid that she'd treat him like some glass model like every other noblewoman did. It was either that or she'd treat him like a celebrity and try to go after him for that.

But upon learning that she was the Queen, he realized that she wouldn't gain any extra support or social status from a relationship with him.

That alone made him curious about her, and he knew he had to at least give her a chance. So when Zelda lead him by the hand, running into the Queen alone atop the castle balcony, he couldn't say that he wasn't interested in talking to her.

Her first words would make or break this chance.

So when he leveled a gaze at her, taking note of her flushed cheeks, she spoke the first thing they came to her mind.

"W-Would you mind if I took the time to show you around…?" She'd asked quietly, seemingly having been turned into a bashful mess underneath his intense presence.

She didn't try to woo him, didn't try to make herself appear alluring to his eyes, or try to impress him in any way shape or form.

She merely offered to help show him around her castle.

And he took her offered hand without question.

She'd quickly ended up hanging off of him, both verbally and physically, taking hold of his arm as they walked.

At first he'd been confused by her touchy demeanor, but he eventually learned.

She'd been enveloped in the strong and powerful aura he emitted, his cool heroic nature providing her all the strength she needed to manage her out of control magical powers.

She had been scared, terrified of herself, her powers, of what she could do to people…

Of what she had done to people in the past.

Meeting him was a miracle to her, and for a short while, she didn't feel like she had to live in fear of herself. When in his presence, she felt like she could be herself.

But without him…

Without the comfort his aura gave her, she fell apart. It was something he learned firsthand when she devolved into a panic attack over a great deal of internal turmoil within her heart.

Her powers exploded out of control, and she collapsed to the ground in defeat as she cried her heart out.

But he'd been right there for her, providing her that shoulder to cry on when she felt the weight of her troubles come crashing down on her back.

No matter how cold it got, no matter how much it hurt, he never let her go.

She didn't have anyone to support her.

She'd been struggling to survive for years, and seeing such a loving young woman going through so much suffering had spurred him into action.

If no one understood her pain, her curse, her struggles, then he would.

And…

She had accepted him.

It had made him so happy, knowing that he'd gotten through to her.

For the short hour he spent with her after that, he felt happy. Holding her in his arms, gently guiding her step by step in dance, her eyes on his.

Made his heart swell.

But as delightful as it had been, it didn't last long.

Anna had come declaring her wishes to be married, and everything fell apart shortly afterward.

It happened too much, too fast, the Ice Queen couldn't handle it all, and she broke.

Her powers exploded in a freezing blizzard, terrifying her guests and nearly injuring a good number of people. Within an instant, her greatest fears had been realized.

He'd been by her side in an instant, glove in hand, ready to be her strength once more. He'd tried to help her, tried to calm her down.

But…

She was overwhelmed, and she was so utterly afraid.

And she shot him with her magic, sending him to the ground with a freezing blast right to his eye.

He didn't care about the fact that his vision nearly vanished entirely from his left eye. He didn't care that some of his golden locks had turned an icy, lifeless white from her magic. He didn't care that it was difficult to breathe, hard to move, painful to see.

He just needed to get to her and calm her down, let her know that she wasn't a monster, that he cared.

And so he ignored the shouting of those calling out to him, telling him to stop as he ran after her…

"Elsa! Elsa wait, please!" He shouted as he tried to run after her, legs feeling heavy with every step. He burst out through the main castle doors, surprising the guards and the guests in his haste.

"P-Please just leave me alone!" The terrified icy queen cried out as she backed away, throwing her hands up as if to tell him and the others to leave her be.

And then her magic swelled within her once more, following the trajectory of her hands as another freezing blast of magic shot forward towards the crowd.

The Hero's eyes widened in horror as her deadly magic surged towards a mother and her young daughter, unable to be stopped. He moved without thinking, throwing himself in the way of the unintentional attack.

Screaming echoed throughout the castle plaza as his blood painted the ground red, his eyes widening as a spike of sharpened ice stabbed into his chest.

"Link!" Zelda screamed as she ran from the castle, watching uselessly as her hero took an attack that would have spelled the end for the civilians.

"N-No…" Elsa muttered in horror, hands shaking as she clutched them to her breasts. "I-I didn't m-mean to…" She devolved into hysterical tears, watching as her out of control powers injured the only one that had shown such affection for her.

She turned and ran, sprinting as fast as her legs could possibly carry her, before running across the surface of the ocean, turning it into a frozen wasteland.

Link coughed a red wet sound, before breaking himself free from the spear of ice. He didn't even seem to notice the damage he'd taken, instead moving to rush after her.

She was so far away now that she couldn't even hear him if he called out to her. He gained tunnel vision as he ran, not even hearing Zelda calling out to him to stop.

By the time he reached the ocean front, she was long gone, having vanished into the blizzard summoned by her powers.

His Queen came up to him, reaching out to grasp his arm as if to stop him from trying to run off again.

"Link please!" The Hylian Queen pressed worriedly. "You're injured, you can't run out there in this condition…" She muttered.

"I'm not going to leave Elsa alone out there…" He muttered sharply, glancing down to her. "She needs my help."

"She's a monster!" Another voice broke into the conversation, the noblemen of the country storming up to him. "Did you see her sorcery?! She nearly killed those women, she froze the kingdom, she nearly killed you!" The aged man shouted, more and more nobles approaching the shoreline in worry. "She's a monster that needs to be put down before she can hurt the people of this kingdom!"

Link's eyes widened in surprise, before narrowing into dangerous slits.

The aura the Hero radiated suddenly giving the older man pause. "Excuse you?" He muttered lowly, pulling away from Zelda's side as he approached the man.

The nobleman wasn't prepared to be grabbed by the front of his suit, held up off his feet as Link lifted him into the air. "Do you know what you are saying right now?" He asked coldly, his gaze frosty and dangerous, lethal. "What you speak is treason." He warned.

"T-That creature is a monster! She is not our Queen! She's an abomination that needs to be put down!" The man refused to change his stance, despite the situation he found himself in.

"That woman is a girl that is in desperate need of help, and she certainly can't get that help if she has her own kingdom crying out monster against her!" Link snarled, tossing the man unceremoniously to the ground. "If none of you are willing to help your beloved Queen when she is suffering, then none of you deserve her at all." He declared, turning a cold glare onto the massive crowd of onlookers.

They flinched at the primal heat behind his gaze, the truth behind his words.

He didn't stick around, cape flaring out behind him as he stormed off into the blizzard, vanishing into the sea of white. No one was going to stop him from going after her.

Not even Zelda.

As for the Queen of Hyrule herself, she only watched on the wayside as he left the kingdom behind in search of the Ice Queen. Yet despite this, she couldn't help but feel immensely proud of the stance he took for the other woman, and was going to offer all the support she could.

Arendell was in need of someone to rule them with Elsa out of the question for the time being, and she certainly wasn't leaving it up to the bloodthirsty noblemen. Just from her little experience with Anna, she knew the younger sister was in no way shape or form prepared to rule a kingdom.

She turned from the frozen ocean, marching back up to the castle. She offered the fleeing Hero a quiet prayer, wishing him well.

She had not clue as to how long he would be gone…

She felt a pain in her chest that had no rival, a stabbing sensation that gripped her from the inside out, squeezing the life from her.

After everything had been said and done, she'd gone ahead and wounded the only man who'd shown interest in her, the only man who'd actively gone out of his way to show her that he cared, even though she'd just met him that day.

And she nearly killed him.

They were right…

They were all right…

She really was a monster, someone who could only bring harm to those around her if she stayed.

And so…

She left.

She fled from her kingdom, the words of her people echoing in her mind.

Monster…

Witch…

Demon…

They taunted her.

Poked at her nerves.

Took what minuscule level of self confidence she had and threw it away.

Not for the first time in her life she wished that she'd never been given these powers…

She wished that she'd never been born.

Maybe then she wouldn't have had to suffer…

Maybe then, Anna could've lived a better life.

But dwelling on those feelings now would bring her nothing, nothing but anxiety and anger, pain and despair.

And so, she just, let it go.

She just, let it all go.

It was like the lock she'd placed around herself all those years ago had suddenly been tossed to the wayside, and she stopped trying to hold it all in.

She couldn't hold it in anymore.

She tore her royal cape from her shoulders, throwing it to the wind as she held her chin up high, refusing to wallow in solitude any longer.

Instead of hiding her powers, holding them all in out of fear, she let them run free.

A smile broke across her face as she waved her hands about, summoning blizzards and storms, creating objects from her memory out of snow and ice.

It was like a trigger had been switched in her mind, and she couldn't help but feel so freed.

There was no need to fear her powers if there wasn't anyone around her to hurt. And if there wasn't anyone around to hurt her, then her magic obeyed her perfectly, practically dancing on the wind.

She felt so powerful, so free, so beautiful!

She felt like dancing through the blizzard, accepting this part of her with the knowledge that it would never go away.

She built a castle of ice, a towering pillar atop the tallest mountain in the entire country. It stood tall and glorious, a magnificent magical blue, seemingly indestructible.

And then she surrounded herself with the walls of her new home, far, far away from anyone or anything.

Just her in her palace of ice, atop the world, alone.

And for the first time since she was a child, she felt at peace. After all, her biggest fear was hurting those she loved…

And she couldn't hurt anyone out here, not even herself.

The cold never bothered her anyway.

That said, she couldn't help feel a part of her scolding her for running away. The image of Link's face staring at her in concern flashed across mind, but she quickly shook it away.

It didn't matter now…

Not anymore…

He was down at the bottom of the world with everyone else, no one could follow her up here without dying.

"He's safer down there…" Situated atop her throne of ice, she convinced herself that this was the right choice in the end. She already hurt him once, she couldn't live with herself if she hurt him a second time.

Watching his hair turn white after being struck by her magic made her stomach churn in mortification. It was like Anna all over again, except this time he'd been hit far harder than her sister ever did.

"I-It's better this way…" She muttered to herself, legs curling up against her breasts atop her cold lonely throne.

He would eventually forget about her, fall for some other normal woman, maybe a woman of his own kind. He would be happy then, without having to fear her dangerous curse. He could love someone else, someone better.

"He'll forget about me."

"It's better this way."

"I don't need anyone."

She repeated to herself as if to convince herself it was the truth.

But…

No matter what she did, what she told herself, she couldn't stop the tears that fell, tears that froze before they even hit the ground.

Tears that simply wouldn't stop falling.

"Curse you…" She muttered bitterly, biting her lips as she cried atop her lonely chair. "Why'd you have to go and steal my heart…" She murmured into her arms, as she slowly began to cry herself to sleep.

Leaving would've been far easier if he'd not been there that night.
