The Long Branch Saloon was alive with laughter, clinking glasses, and the hum of conversation. Kitty moved gracefully through the room, exchanging smiles and easy banter with the patrons. Behind the bar, Bill Pence, the owner, kept a watchful eye on the evening's profits.
As the saloon doors swung open, Matt's tall frame filled the doorway, drawing a momentary hush. He crossed the room with purpose, nodding to Bill as he reached the bar.
"Evening, Marshal," Bill greeted, his tone jovial. "What brings you in so early? You're usually chasing trouble at this hour."
"Trouble might be chasing us this time," Matt replied, his voice low.
Kitty joined them, her brow furrowed. "What's going on, Matt?"
Matt quickly filled them in, explaining the wounded drifter and the possibility of an outlaw gang targeting Dodge City—specifically the Long Branch.
Bill's expression darkened. "They think they can make a name for themselves by hitting my saloon? Not on my watch."
"We'll do what we can to protect the place," Matt assured him. "But we need to prepare. Bill, you should be ready to lock this place down if it comes to a fight."
"What about me?" Kitty asked, her voice steady but her eyes searching Matt's face.
"You should think about leaving town until this blows over," Matt said, his tone softer. "It's not safe, Kitty."
Kitty's eyes narrowed. "I've been in Dodge long enough to handle myself, Marshal. If you think I'm going to run, you don't know me as well as I thought."
Matt met her gaze, a flicker of frustration and admiration passing through his eyes. "I just want you to be safe."
"I'll be as safe as you are," she replied firmly.
Bill, sensing the tension, cleared his throat. "Well, I guess we'd better start getting ready. Kitty, you and I can make sure the girls know what to do."
Matt nodded, tipping his hat to them both. "I'll be back to check in later. Stay sharp."
As Matt left the saloon, Kitty's gaze lingered on the door. She hated when he tried to shield her, but she also knew it came from a place of care. For now, though, there was work to be done. Dodge City wasn't going to defend itself.
