In The Moment
It was a typical afternoon at Ash and Misty's house, and the atmosphere was calm, save for the occasional babbling of their 5-month-old twins, Aiden and Michelle. The two were in their bassinet, their tiny faces contorted in concentration as they tried to deal with the discomfort of teething. May and Dawn had come over to visit, both sitting comfortably on the couch with Misty.
Aiden was napping quietly while Michelle seemed a little fussy, her tiny hands gripping at her gums. Misty watched with a soft smile, even though she could see how uncomfortable her daughter was.
May, still glowing from her early pregnancy, leaned forward with a gentle coo. "Oh, look at them. They're so cute. Can I hold Aiden?"
"Of course," Misty said, carefully picking Aiden up from the bassinet and passing him to May.
As May cradled Aiden, Dawn looked at Michelle, her hands hovering, unsure if she should ask. "Can I—?"
"Sure," Misty nodded, a small laugh escaping her as Dawn carefully lifted Michelle, settling her in her arms. The moment Michelle was lifted, however, she let out a high-pitched wail, her discomfort apparent.
Dawn's eyes widened in surprise as Michelle's cry grew louder. "Oh no, I think she's in pain."
Misty immediately reached for her daughter, but Michelle refused to settle, her cries escalating. The sound pierced the quiet house, echoing down the halls.
Ash, upstairs in their bedroom, heard the cries. His heart clenched as he recognized the sound of his daughter's distress. He quickly moved toward the stairs, his footsteps heavy as he made his way down.
"Misty, is everything okay?" He called as he descended the stairs.
Misty, looking up at him with a mix of exhaustion and love, smiled warmly. "She's teething. She's really cranky today. I think she wants her dada."
Ash didn't need to be told twice. He walked toward Michelle, who was still crying uncontrollably in Dawn's arms. "Let me take her," Ash said softly, holding out his arms.
Dawn, relieved, passed Michelle to her father without a second thought. The moment Ash took his daughter into his arms, she seemed to calm just a little, her cries softening to whimpers.
Ash spoke gently to her, rocking her in his arms, his voice soothing. "Hey, Shelly. It's okay. Daddy's here."
The crying quieted, and within a few moments, Michelle had stopped entirely. Her little body relaxed against Ash, and her eyes fluttered shut. Ash held her close, whispering soft words as he gently made his way up the stairs to their bedroom.
May and Dawn sat back on the couch, eyes wide with awe. "I can't believe how well he handles her," Dawn whispered, a soft smile tugging at her lips.
May nodded, her eyes still fixed on the stairs. "He's such a natural. I always thought of Ash as the playful, carefree guy… but seeing him with Michelle, it's like he's a completely different person."
Misty, watching her daughter snuggled in Ash's arms, chuckled softly at the girls' expressions. "It's like that sometimes, right? You never really know how someone will be as a parent."
Dawn looked at Misty curiously, raising an eyebrow. "So, why do you think Michelle's so attached to him?"
Misty gave a playful shrug, her tone light. "Well, because he's her dad, of course."
May let out a small laugh, but Dawn was more serious. "No, really. It's more than that, isn't it?"
Misty's expression softened as she leaned back against the couch. "When Michelle was born, she had very weak lungs. She had trouble breathing, and I spent every moment with her… but Ash? He stayed up all night just to make sure she was breathing evenly. He couldn't sleep until he knew she was okay. Sometimes, she'd fall asleep in his arms."
Dawn's eyes widened. May's mouth dropped open in understanding.
"And he was the first one to hold her, right after the doctors and nurses," Misty continued, her voice full of fondness. "She gave him her first smile. She's always had this special bond with him."
"Wow…" May whispered, her hand instinctively resting over her stomach, imagining the future with her own child. "That's so beautiful. No wonder she's so attached to him."
Dawn nodded, her expression softened as she looked toward the stairs. "It's incredible. You can really see how much she loves him."
"He's her world." Misty smiled fondly. The memory of their time at the hospital, where everything had been so new and overwhelming, seemed like a lifetime ago.
Dawn, still in awe of Ash's bond with Michelle, raised an eyebrow. "So, how did you two pick their names? I can't imagine you both agreed right away."
Misty let out a soft laugh, her eyes twinkling with the memory. "Oh, we definitely had a fight over it." She chuckled, remembering the playful argument that had unfolded. "When we were in the hospital, we couldn't agree on anything. I wanted to name Michelle after a shell hairclip Ash gave me on our first date. It was this little blue seashell, and it just felt right, you know?"
May smiled at the sweet memory. "I can see why you'd pick that. That's such a meaningful gift."
Misty nodded, her smile widening. "Yeah, it was special. So I suggested 'Michelle,' and Ash liked it, but of course, he had his own opinion about it."
Dawn leaned in, curious. "What did he say?"
"He complained about starting with an 'M,'" Misty explained with a grin. "Then he was determined that our son's name had to start with an 'A.' So, Aiden came about because of that."
Dawn and May both laughed, nodding in understanding.
"And then," Misty continued, "Ash picked Aimi as Michelle's middle name. It's a mix of our names—'Ai' for Ash and 'Mi' for me. He thought it was perfect. It's like a little piece of both of us."
"That's so sweet," May said softly. "What about Aiden?"
Misty's eyes softened. "Well, I picked 'Mark' for Aiden's middle name. He is the mark of our love you know? I wanted to honor that. So Aiden Mark just felt right."
Dawn smiled warmly at Misty's words. "That's beautiful, Misty. It's so clear how much you two love each other."
Misty chuckled, her heart full. "Yeah, we're kind of a team."
Misty's smile softened as she thought back to the hospital. "You know," she started, her voice taking on a nostalgic tone, "Ash didn't hold Aiden right away, even though he was our firstborn."
May and Dawn both looked at Misty in surprise. "Really?" May asked, her brow furrowing. "But Ash is so great with the kids now!"
Misty laughed lightly, her gaze distant with the memory. "Yeah, he's an amazing dad now, but back then, he was so nervous. He was terrified of holding a baby. He kept saying, 'What if I drop him?' or 'What if I do something wrong?' So, he just… didn't."
Dawn smiled gently. "I can't imagine Ash being afraid of anything."
Misty grinned. "Oh, but he was. He spent most of his time pacing and asking the nurses a million questions. He wanted to be sure everything was perfect, but when it came to holding Aiden, he just wasn't ready."
May chuckled. "That's so cute. So, what happened with Michelle?"
Misty's eyes brightened as she recalled the moment. "Well, when Michelle was born, the doctor took her away to run a few tests, just to make sure everything was okay. Afterward, the doctor brought her back to us, and without any warning, placed her right into Ash's arms."
Dawn's eyes widened. "Wow, that must've been a shock for him."
Misty nodded, a fond smile spreading across her face. "It was! He wasn't prepared at all, but the moment she was in his arms, Michelle opened her eyes, looked up at him… and gave him her first smile."
May and Dawn both smiled, clearly moved by the story.
"Ash kept talking about it later, teasing me, saying how Michelle 'picked him' first. He'd joke, 'She smiled at me, Mist! I must be the favorite already!'" Misty laughed, shaking her head. "I think that was the moment he truly knew he was meant to be her dad. No more fear. Just love."
