Petalburg XI
The gym battlefield was quiet, the air thick with tension as I faced Norman across the arena. The man radiated calm confidence, his every movement deliberate as he tossed out his first Pokéball.
A Raticate appeared in a burst of light, landing lightly on its feet with a low growl. Norman's expression didn't waver as he gestured toward me. "Let's see how you handle this."
I smirked, already feeling the adrenaline rush. "Han, let's get this started!"
Han leaped onto the battlefield, twig clenched firmly in his mouth, his bright eyes locked onto Raticate. He bounced lightly on his feet, a bundle of nervous energy, but I knew he was raring to go.
Norman didn't waste time. "Quick Attack into Hyper Fang!"
Raticate shot forward in a blur, its fangs gleaming as it lunged straight for Han.
"Dodge it!" I called.
Han darted to the side with his own Quick Attack, moving just in time to avoid the snapping jaws. Without missing a beat, he used the momentum to pivot and launch himself back toward Raticate. "Wild Charge, now!"
Electricity crackled around Han's small frame as he charged headlong into Raticate, the impact sending the larger Pokémon flying backward. The sound of the collision echoed through the gym, and Raticate skidded across the floor before coming to a stop.
"Follow through, Han!" I shouted. "Mach Punch barrage!"
Han was on the move instantly, closing the distance between himself and Raticate with lightning speed. His fists began to glow as he prepared to unleash a flurry of blows.
"Protect!" Norman barked.
A shimmering barrier appeared around Raticate just as Han's first punch connected, deflecting the attack effortlessly. Before Han could recover, Norman was already giving his next command. "Iron Tail!"
Raticate dropped the barrier and spun, its tail glowing silver as it whipped around and struck Han squarely in the face. The impact sent him careening across the battlefield, skidding to a stop near the edge of the arena.
"Han!" I called, my heart pounding.
For a moment, he didn't move. Then, with a groan, Han pushed himself up, shaking off the blow. The twig in his mouth shifted slightly, but he bit down on it with determination and turned back to face Raticate.
Raticate was already charging forward again, its speed relentless.
"Now's your chance! Mach Punch!" I shouted.
Han lunged forward with renewed energy, dodging Raticate's advance and landing a clean hit with his glowing fists. He didn't stop there, he leaped onto Raticate's back, electricity building up around him.
"Thundershock!"
With a flash of light and a crackling burst, Han unleashed the attack point-blank. Raticate let out a pained cry before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.
Norman recalled his Pokémon, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Impressive. Quick thinking and excellent use of momentum." He replaced the empty Pokéball on his belt and pulled out his next. "But let's see if you've got what it takes to handle this one."
The Pokéball burst open, and there it was—the Pokémon I'd been expecting. Vigoroth.
It let out a wild cry, landing on the battlefield with sharp claws flexed and ready. Even from where I stood, I could see Han's twig tremble slightly in his mouth.
"Don't let it psych you out, Han," I called. "We've got this."
Han puffed out his chest and let out a loud "Pawmo!" followed by a string of what was unmistakably trash talk. He pointed his twig at Vigoroth like a sword, waving it tauntingly.
"Han," I groaned. "Could you not?"
Han turned and winked at me. Relax, boss. It's all part of the plan.
Norman chuckled, his voice steady. "Vigoroth, let's use that energy. Play Rough into Slash!"
Vigoroth shot forward with surprising speed, claws glowing as it slashed at Han.
"Dodge it, Han!"
Han moved like lightning, weaving through Vigoroth's attacks with nimble precision. Each time he dodged, he sent out small bursts of electricity, trying to paralyze the menacing Normal-type.
One of the bursts finally landed, causing Vigoroth to stumble slightly.
"Arm Thrust!" I called.
Han rushed in, landing a solid hit. But before he could follow up, Vigoroth's claw shot out, grabbing Han's paw mid-attack.
"Body Slam!" Norman ordered.
With a ferocious cry, Vigoroth pulled Han close and slammed him into the ground with tremendous force. Han let out a pained grunt, the wind knocked out of him.
"Han!" I yelled, watching as Vigoroth followed up with two quick slashes, both landing cleanly.
"Fight back with Wild Charge!" I shouted desperately.
Han pushed himself up, electricity surging around him as he launched himself at Vigoroth, meeting the third slash head-on. The impact was massive, and the recoil sent Han stumbling back. He swayed for a moment, his breathing ragged, before collapsing to the ground.
"You did good, buddy," I said softly, recalling Han to his Pokéball. My chest tightened for a moment as I looked at the powerhouse Vigoroth still standing on the battlefield, claws flexing and teeth bared. This thing wasn't just strong, it was relentless. But I had someone ready to face that challenge.
"Let's go, Bodhi!"
The little Shroomish hopped onto the field, his determined gaze locking onto Vigoroth. As he landed, a faint shimmer surrounded him—his Spore Guard activating automatically. Good timing, too, because Vigoroth wasted no time charging in like a madman.
"Slash!" Norman called, his voice sharp.
Vigoroth's claws gleamed as it slashed downward, Bodhi barely sidestepping the attack in time.
"Follow it up! Hammer Arm!"
Before Bodhi could fully recover, Vigoroth's arm came down in a heavy swing. Bodhi ducked under it, his stubby legs scrambling to keep up.
"Mega Punch!"
This time, Vigoroth's glowing fist hit Bodhi sending him tumbling backward. He skidded to a stop, letting out a small grunt of pain, but not before releasing a burst of spores into the air.
A mixture of Stun Spore, Poison Powder, and Spore spread out in all directions, clinging to Vigoroth. The Normal type staggered slightly as the effects began to take hold, though it didn't seem to slow him down much.
"Keep your distance, Bodhi!" I shouted. "Magical Leaf!"
Bodhi recovered quickly, launching a flurry of glowing leaves at Vigoroth. They twisted and turned in the air, homing in on their target, but Vigoroth either dodged or tanked the hits like they were nothing.
"This Pokémon is a walking tank," I muttered under my breath. "What the fuck..."
Norman's voice cut through my thoughts. "Vigoroth, don't let up! Finish it!"
Vigoroth roared, closing the gap between them with frightening speed. Bodhi dodged another Mega Punch at the last second, but this time Vigoroth lashed out with a Mega Kick, sending him flying across the field.
"Bodhi!" I yelled as he struggled to stand.
His small frame shook as he pushed himself up, the spore shimmer still faintly visible around him. For a moment, I wondered if this was it if Vigoroth's relentless assault was too much.
"You got this, Bodhi!" I called out, my voice carrying across the gym.
Bodhi turned to look at me, his eyes locking onto mine. Then, something incredible happened. His body began to glow, the light pulsing outward as he straightened himself up.
The whole gym fell silent as we watched. The glowing form of Bodhi began to shift, growing taller and more defined. When the light faded, standing in his place was a Breloom.
Bodhi let out a triumphant shout, his newfound confidence radiating off him.
"Let's try this again!" I called, seizing the opportunity and energy of his evolution.
Bodhi didn't need any further instruction. He surged forward with blinding speed, his fist glowing as he landed a clean hit on Vigoroth. The spores around him continued to pepper the field, making every move more difficult for Vigoroth as the status effects started to stack.
The fight turned into an all-out brawl. Bodhi's fists moved in a blur, delivering a flurry of Mach Punches that reminded me of Han's relentless training sessions.
Guess he's been watching Han practice, I thought to myself, unable to hide my grin.
The two Pokémon exchanged blows in a spectacular display of raw power and speed. Vigoroth roared as it landed a Mega Punch, only for Bodhi to retaliate with another Mach Punch. The spores surrounding him seemed to invigorate his movements while sapping Vigoroth's strength little by little.
From somewhere behind me, I heard Flannery shouting, "LET'S GO, BODHI! BEAT THAT OVERGROWN SLAKOTH INTO OBLIVION!"
The battle raged on, each Pokémon refusing to back down despite the visible exhaustion on both sides. Finally, with one last exchange a Mach Punch from Bodhi and a Slash from Vigoroth, the two collided in the center of the battlefield.
When the dust settled, both Pokémon lay motionless on the ground.
"Double knockout!" the referee announced, raising both flags.
I exhaled deeply, my heart still racing. Bodhi had done it, he'd stood his ground against Vigoroth and evolved in the process. I couldn't have been prouder.
Norman recalled his Vigoroth, a faint smile on his face. "That was impressive," he said, his voice carrying a note of genuine admiration. "Your Breloom has real spirit. I hate to admit it, but this last one may not be as exciting as Vigoroth. But I'm curious to see just how far you've trained Atlas."
I nodded, grabbing Atlas's Pokéball. "Let's finish this, buddy!"
With a flash of light, Atlas appeared on the field, his massive frame immediately commanding attention. The larger-than-usual Stufful shook out his fur, his calm demeanor giving way to a focused intensity as he locked eyes with Norman's Pokémon.
Norman's Patrat landed lightly on the battlefield, its glowing eyes narrowing as it sized up Atlas. Despite its small stature, there was something unnervingly sharp about its gaze, as if it was studying every move Atlas might make.
Norman was the first to act. "Patrat, start with Sand Attack!"
"Atlas, Brutal Punch to clear it!" I shouted.
Patrat darted forward, kicking up a cloud of sand aimed directly at Atlas's face. But Atlas reacted quickly, swinging his glowing paw downward in a sweeping motion. The force of the Brutal Punch scattered the sand harmlessly, clearing the air and forcing Patrat back.
"Don't let up! Hyper Fang!" Norman called.
Patrat lunged forward, its teeth glowing dangerously as it aimed for Atlas.
"Baby Doll Eyes!" I countered.
Atlas's eyes glimmered with an innocent, almost disarming look that froze Patrat mid-lunge. The move worked perfectly, causing Patrat to hesitate just enough for Atlas to sidestep the attack.
"Now, Payback!" I yelled.
Atlas's fur bristled as a dark energy surrounded him. He struck back with a heavy blow, sending Patrat skidding across the battlefield.
"Protect!" Norman barked.
Patrat quickly formed a shimmering shield around itself, absorbing the follow-up strike from Atlas's Brutal Kick. The move landed hard against the barrier, creating a loud crack but failing to break through.
Norman smirked. "Crunch!"
Patrat dropped the barrier and lunged again, sinking its glowing teeth into Atlas's arm. Atlas let out a low growl of pain, but he didn't falter.
"Mega Punch, Atlas!" I called.
With a roar, Atlas raised his free paw, energy swirling around it as he delivered a devastating Mega Punch to Patrat. The smaller Pokémon was knocked clean off, rolling to a stop near the edge of the field.
"Don't give up! Hypnosis!" Norman commanded.
Patrat's eyes glowed with an eerie light as it tried to put Atlas to sleep.
"Brutal Kick, now!" I shouted.
Before the Hypnosis could take effect, Atlas closed the gap in an instant, his hind leg glowing with dark energy as he delivered a powerful kick. The impact sent Patrat flying once more, this time landing hard in the center of the battlefield.
Norman's expression grew serious. "Patrat, Slam!"
Patrat pushed itself up, wobbling slightly before charging forward with all its strength.
"Baby Doll Payback!" I commanded.
Atlas's eyes softened momentarily, the move slowing Patrat's momentum just enough for him to deliver a Payback infused with residual energy from his Baby Doll Eyes. The hit landed squarely, and Patrat crumpled to the ground, unable to continue.
The referee raised his flag. "Patrat is unable to battle. The winner is Michael Kane from Littleroot Town!"
The gym fell silent for a moment before applause erupted from the spectators. I ran onto the field, grinning as I approached Atlas.
"You did it, buddy!" I said, patting his head as he let out a low, triumphant rumble.
Norman recalled his Patrat, stepping forward with a smile. "Impressive work, Michael. Atlas has come a long way, that was a decisive victory."
He extended his hand, holding out the badge. "You've earned this."
I accepted it, a sense of pride swelling in my chest as I looked at the gleaming badge in my hand. Turning to my team, I held it up. "We did it, guys!"
Han and Bodhi, now in their Pokéballs, couldn't join the celebration, but Atlas rumbled in approval, standing tall as the cheers of the crowd echoed around us.
""
"That was great, Michael!" Flannery said, her voice bubbling with excitement as I joined her and Roxanne at the exit of the challengers' booth. "And Bodhi evolving? I didn't expect that at all—but I guess it's about time the little guy evolved, huh?"
Roxanne gave me a soft smile, her tone calm but warm. "You did great, Michael. The way you handled Vigoroth was impressive. Even when Han went down, you and Bodhi made up for it in the best way possible. And it turned out brilliantly."
I couldn't help but grin, the adrenaline from the battle still rushing through me. "Thanks, guys. Honestly, I had a feeling Bodhi was close to evolving, I'd noticed some signs during training but I didn't expect it to happen so soon. And definitely not at such a decisive moment."
Flannery chuckled, nudging my arm. "Perfect timing, though. That Vigoroth was terrifying. I mean, it was built like a brick wall and fought like it had something to prove. Bodhi stepping up like that? Total MVP move."
I laughed, scratching the back of my head. "Yeah, it was pretty intense. Atlas finishing off Patrat was the cherry on top, though. He's come a long way."
The three of us shared a brief moment of quiet pride before I spoke again. "So, we've still got some time before your scheduled match, Roxy. What do you say we grab lunch? We've got over an hour, so a quick bite wouldn't hurt."
Roxanne hesitated for a moment, then let out a soft laugh. "Sure. I could use something to distract myself from all the planning going on in my head."
Before I could respond, Flannery draped an arm over Roxanne's shoulder, grinning from ear to ear. "Don't worry, Roxy I know just the place to help you cool off." She gave her a playful wink, and Roxanne raised an eyebrow in response.
Shaking my head, I couldn't help but smile. "I can already see where this is going," I muttered to myself as I followed the pair out the gym doors.
The warm midday sun greeted us as we stepped outside, the bustling streets of Petalburg City alive with energy. Flannery led the way, practically skipping down the sidewalk as Roxanne and I followed at a more measured pace.
"You'll love this spot," Flannery said over her shoulder. "It's got everything—good food, chill vibes, and the best dessert menu in town. Trust me, Roxy, this is exactly what you need to get out of your head for a bit."
Roxanne adjusted her glasses, her lips twitching into a faint smile. "I'll take your word for it. But no distractions once we're back at the gym, I want to make sure I'm completely prepared for my match."
"Scout's honor!" Flannery said, raising her hand in mock seriousness. "Now come on, I'm starving."
