Hajime Gekitsuden

Chapter 8: Shaken resolve~ Arc1: Start of a new journey

The following night in Satoru's room, the two friends sat cross-legged on the floor with the old journal between them.

"So… here it goes," Hajime said, tension thick in his voice. This was it. That dusty old book was supposed to hold the answers he'd been seeking for so long. Just as he reached for it, a sudden knock at the door froze them in place.

To their utter shock, Umino Iruka stepped into the room.

The sight of their homeroom teacher left both boys staring in stunned silence. Why would Iruka-sensei show up at such a late hour? Hajime felt his insides twist as the man's gaze fell on them, his expression unreadable.

"Good evening, Hajime, Satoru," Iruka greeted with a warm smile, though his eyes betrayed a hint of concern. "May I come in?"

"S…Sensei!" Satoru stammered, his voice cracking as Hajime quickly tucked the journal under a blanket.

Iruka walked in, his demeanor calm but serious. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation at the academy. You've been digging into matters that are better left untouched."

"What do you mean?" Satoru asked defensively, his arms crossed.

Those words—"better left untouched"—made Hajime freeze. Sweat trickled down his forehead as his mind raced. Did Iruka overhear what they'd said about Mayumi and the Uchiha clan? How? When? They had always been cautious at the academy… or so he thought.

Iruka hesitated, weighing his words. "There are things about this village, about its history, that are obscured for a reason. The balance we've achieved is delicate, and certain truths, if exposed, could lead to chaos."

Despite his growing unease, Hajime met his teacher's gaze and said, "We deserve to know the truth, Iruka-sensei. It's about our village."

Iruka nodded gravely. "I understand your curiosity, but some secrets are better left buried. Knowledge can be a double-edged sword. It's my duty as your teacher to guide you away from harm."

The tension in the room was palpable. Satoru, unable to stay silent, pressed further. "We've uncovered evidence of something deeper—something that involves more than just the Uchiha incident. What do you know about that, sensei?"

Hajime shot Satoru a look of surprise. His friend's boldness caught him off guard yet again. Confronting Iruka directly was a risky move, but perhaps it was the push they needed.

Iruka's eyes flickered with a mix of emotions. "I can't reveal everything, but I implore you both to reconsider this pursuit. Some truths bring more pain than understanding."

A heavy silence filled the room.

"Be sure to make the right decision," Iruka added as he turned to leave. At the door, he paused, giving Hajime a lingering look before stepping out.

The moment Iruka was gone, Hajime pulled the journal back out from its hiding place. For some reason, it felt heavier in his hands than before.

"Okay… here it goes again," Hajime said, reaching for the cover.

"Stop!" Satoru's voice cut through the silence as he grabbed Hajime's hand. "Do we really want to know? I'm starting to think it might be better to stop now, while we still can," he added, his voice trembling.

Fear was evident in Satoru's eyes. Hajime stared at his friend for a moment, then shook his head.

"I told you, I'm seeing this through to the end. If you're too uncomfortable, I'll do this alone," Hajime said firmly.

For a moment, the two friends locked eyes, each testing the other's resolve. Then Satoru sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Okay… I'm not letting you do this alone. Let's start," he said, his voice steady despite his fear.

As they delved into the journal, they began uncovering fragments of a chilling truth. One name kept appearing: "Kurogane." This shadowy figure seemed to have orchestrated a plan to harness the unique abilities tied to Mayumi's bloodline.

The more they read, the clearer it became that Kurogane's influence extended far beyond Konoha. They unearthed details of a network of rogue shinobi who had abandoned their villages to pursue their own twisted ambitions. The conspiracy reached deep into Konoha's leadership, implicating some of the village elders in the dark schemes surrounding the Uchiha massacre.

"This… this means that Uchiha Itachi was one of Kurogane's associates?" Satoru asked, his voice trembling as sweat beaded on his forehead.

"If that were true, he would've captured Mayumi—not killed her like the others," Hajime replied, his voice unsteady.

"Haji," Satoru began hesitantly, "there are forbidden techniques that could harness even the power of the…" His voice faltered, the horrifying thought too much to vocalize.

Hajime felt his body go cold. He had just started to accept Mayumi's death, but the idea of her being subjected to forbidden experiments after her death was revolting.

"And to think some of Konoha's own leaders were involved in this…" Satoru added, anger flashing in his eyes.

The two friends fell into another long silence. The village they had revered, the ideals they had aspired to uphold—everything now seemed tainted.

Mayumi's disappearance was no random tragedy. It was part of a much larger, darker game.

THE END.
