Chapter XXVI: The Dragon Call
X—X
Murder.
Help me.
Rage.
Kill them. Kill them all.
They are not worthy of breathing the earthly air anymore.
They dared, they knew and they dared.
What if they didn't know?
They knew. It is in plain sight, and it is worn with great pride.
They knew.
But murder?
You are right. That is too easy an escape. They need to suffer.
I can't breathe.
Imagine their flesh dripping down your claws. Imagine their blood dripping down your fangs. Their bodies, twitching in pain. Their screams filled with agony. Your wings, coated with their essence.
Death?
The least they deserve for what they have done.
I can't take a life.
THEY TOOK HERS!
...
..
.
... death?
Death.
... sounds good to me.
"Sting?"
His eyes snapped up to see a worried Yukino looking down at him. He gulped and squared his shoulders, taking a deep breath. "Yes?"
"Are you okay?"
"Kind of a fucking stupid question, don't you think?" he rolled his eyes.
"I-I'm sorry. It's just... you don't seem okay."
"Hm, I fucking wonder why." he got up and walked past her.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"Get some air." he closed the door behind himself.
Yukino sighed and went back to her seat, taking Rogue's weak hand. His eyes opened slightly, peering up at her. She smiled shakily, and he nuzzled her neck. He whispered her name and she hummed his. He shuffled closer to her and sniffed the air.
"Hm, what's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Yuki."
"I'm worried about Sting." she sighed. "We're on a train, Rogue. He isn't even remotely sick. He just got up and walked away. Said he was going to catch some air."
"...what color were his eyes?"
"...blue?"
"The usual blue?"
"... no." She frowned, recalling the lighter blue shade paired with fends instead of round pupils.
"...okay." he groaned. "Well, there's nothing I can do right now, but I'll keep it in mind."
"What does it mean?"
"It means Sting is dangerous." Rogue bit his lip. "And there will come a time when all of us should just... stay out of his way."
"What if he does a bad thing?"
"... I'm not sure we can stop him."
"You can. He's your brother."
"You don't understand."
"Then help me understand."
"If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want Sting to try and stop me." Rogue gulped. "But Sting is stronger than me. He's more stable than I am. That's why I have faith he won't follow the same path I would..."
"And what would that path be?"
"... carnage."
–X–
"This is the last point of contact." Yukino looked up from the mission paper. "She was supposed to meet with someone here, that would lead her to the meeting point."
"Great." Sting sniffed the air. "Any intel?"
"No more than a basic description." she shook her head. "Can you smell her?"
"Her scent is too stale. She hasn't been here in more than two weeks." Rogue declared.
"Hey you!" the blond shouted at a chubby man with red cheeks. "Yeah you, with the wannabe explorer hat!"
"Sting!" Yukino gasped.
"I b-beg your pardon?" the middle-aged man spoke with an accent.
"Beg all you fucking want. We're looking for someone." he glared. "Short-stack, orange hair, blue eyes, and tattoos on both sides of her neck."
"I will not assist you in-!" the man tried, but Sting grabbed him by the neck and raised him in the air.
"Where. Is. She."
"Sting! Put him down!" Yukino exclaimed.
"I'm waiting." he cocked his head to the side.
"Sting, you're choking him!" she pushed him, making him let go of the man. "Are you okay?"
"B-bloody mad lads!" he heaved.
"You should have answered the first time." The blond glared.
"Rogue, get him out of here." Yukino took a knee next to the man and helped him stand up. "I'm terribly sorry for him. Are you okay?"
"C-crazy!" he shouted, but he let Yukino help him sit up.
"I'm sorry sir. My name is Yukino, I'm from a guild named Sabertooth, in Fiore." she smiled. "Those are my companions."
"You are a mage?"
"I am." she smiled.
"A young woman came by a few weeks ago. She was a mage too." he pondered. "Rather cute thing."
"Do you know where she is? Or where she went? Who did she speak with?"
"I seem to recall she wanted to help the Council." he pondered. "I know not her name, but I can tell you who she wanted to speak with."
"Please do." she gulped. "And once again, I'm so sorry about him."
"What is his problem?"
"We... we have reason to believe that young woman is in danger. He's her husband."
"... I'm sorry." he stood up with Yukino's help. "Please, follow me. I'll take you to them."
"Thank you."
The group moved after the chubby man, straight into the city hall. They were met with various people, and Yukino led the way with a smile on her face. Soon, they were taken to an office with three elder men inside. Sting immediately flinched when the scent of blood invaded his nose. Rogue shared the same reaction, and let out a low rumble.
"Good morning."
"Greetings. Who may you be?"
"My name is Yukino, and these are Sting and Rogue. We are mages from Sabertooth."
"We have no missions for you, mages."
"N-no, I am aware. It's just that a friend of ours came here about two weeks ago to do a job that you requested, and we haven't heard from her since." she tried. "We were wondering if you could tell us where she went, or where the job was?"
"Are Sabertooth mages that pitiful that they need backup?" one of them scoffed.
A low but rumbling gnarl was heard, echoing through the room. Yukino saw Sting step forward, jacket swishing behind him. He stepped up to the elders and placed his hands on the table. The one in the middle leaned back, eyes wide.
"Y-you're a dragon."
"Where is she?" Sting spoke, his voice low and dark.
"Y-you are with her?"
"I asked you a question, waste of oxygen. You would do well to answer it."
"W-we didn't know."
"What did you do?"
"We were told she was a killer." the one in the middle gulped. "We were told she murdered innocents. That she was cold-blooded, that her voice alone could wipe out an entire village!"
"What?!" Yukino gasped "Who told you that?!"
"I know not his name... but he had a strange crest on the breast of his shirt." he gulped. "I did not know. Strange magic oozed off him."
"Where did you send her?" Rogue asked.
"...to where he asked us." he gulped. "In the forest, there are ruins of an old village. He said to lure her there. He would take care of the rest."
Yukino gasped, Rogue pulled her to him and Sting lowered his head. They all stood in silence for a moment, but then the blond grabbed the elder in the middle by the shirt and pulled him over the table to him. The grumble became louder, the walls seemed to shake. And the man looked up to Sting, and the smell of urine filled the room.
"If I come to find that even a speck of her blood was shed..." he growled, "I will come back here, and I'll make you watch as I tear out the hearts of every soul in this village."
–X–
"Hey."
Sting looked up to see Rogue sit beside him by the fire. Yukino was tucked away in her tent, sleeping. The night had fallen a few hours ago, but Sting seemed to not want to rest. Rogue knew why, he understood, but he could not let up on the blond. He knew him well enough to know he would do something stupid.
"Rogue."
"Talk to me."
"There's nothing to talk about."
"You're sharpening a knife." he looked down at his hands, where the blond dragged his nails over the blade.
"It was blunt. For the next hunt." he looked at the fire.
"What are you thinking?"
"About what?"
"When we find her?"
"I'm going to kill him. Whoever he is."
"Sting, you're a guild master."
"I don't give a fuck." he growled. "I couldn't care less about my title, my guild, my job, my reputation. If he hurt her... he's dead."
"Sting."
"Don't."
Shut him up.
"You need to think things through."
"Shut up."
He knows not what you feel.
"Look, I get it. She's your mate. I understand. But you need to think."
He is a fool. He tries to slow you down. You will not make it to her in time.
"Wake Yukino up, we're leaving."
"No, we're not. We all need rest."
See? He wants her dead.
"Why are you trying to slow us down?"
"Do you listen to yourself speak?" Rogue frowned. "What is wrong with you?"
"You want her dead."
"What?! Are you mental?!"
"You're working with them." Sting stood up, growling.
"Okay, I don't know what is up your ass, but it must be big."
"You want her dead."
"Sting, you-!" Rogue stood up and turned to him. But then he froze. "Sting."
"What?"
"You're not okay."
"Ah, you think?!"
"Sting-!"
"Gee, what part of my mate has been lured into another fucking country, tricked into thinking she would be helping people, baited into a ruined village in the middle of fucking nowhere, only to know that someone wants to kill her, and it's been two weeks since I last saw her, and for all I fucking know she could be-!" he gasped out.
"Sting..."
"What part of that..." he took a shaky breath "Makes you think I'm anywhere near sanity?"
"You're in between transformations."
"What?"
"Your eyes are in Dragon Force mode." Rogue declared. "You need to let go."
He wants to weaken you.
"Why? I feel fine."
"Sting... you know it's dangerous to let the dragon call make the decisions."
"I'm making the decisions. They simply happen to be the same."
"So you're okay with killing an innocent man?"
"He tried to hurt my mate."
"So you'd kill him?"
"Why not?"
"You're lost."
"Like I said... I don't give a fuck." He grabbed his bag and swung it over his shoulder. "Now, either you wake up the girl and come along, or you don't and go to sleep like a little kid. Either way, I'm leaving."
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to find Ivy. And I'm going to avenge her and Lector."
"What if she's dead already?"
"...then don't expect me to return."
