A/N In this story, Avalon refers to the land of Albion, the supposed name for the British Isles after King Arthur and Merlin united all the lands. Please forgive me if that is annoying for you, but I got this far and couldn't change it without a massive amount of work. Sorry ;D Also, lots of hugs to the people who followed, favourited and reviewed this story. Love you all xx
Chapter Four
Gringotts Inheritance Chamber
2 Hours Later
Third Person P.O.V
Harry couldn't believe what his inheritance test was saying… more accurately, what he was reading from the test.
The goblin inheritance chamber was a roughly hewn stone cave-like room, with an expertly drawn runic circle on the floor in the exact centre of it, where he was standing. After giving the rune-master goblin twenty-one drops of his blood from his right hand, he had been directed to the centre and told to sit crossed-legged on the floor. He was glad that he could remain clothed, he was incredibly uncomfortable taking his top off in his dorms, let alone in front of his account manager and others.
After the rune-master, Archaxe, had spread his blood around by placing a drop in a rune twenty-one times, he then charged the runes with his magic and uttered a chant, too low pitched that Harry couldn't hear it. The magic then slowly started to spread around the circle until every rune was lit up and glowing softly.
Then came the names. So many names, starting with his own, Harrison James Potter – he didn't know that was his full name, then his parent's names. Sad to say, he didn't recognise the names of his grandparents, Charlus Henry Potter and Dorea Rose Black nee Potter or the Evanses, Phillip Jasper Evans and Evangaline Jasmine Evans. From there on, he just kept gazing at the words hanging magically in the air in front of him. With his name at the top, they just kept running down further and further, he noted that the Potter line only ever had one or two children each generation.
According to Archaxe, the test would only go back about a thousand years or so, but he was still surprised with how many names there were. Giving up on reading all the names, he looked over to the side of the room where the goblins were sitting at a desk with a piece of parchment which was recording all the names that were currently hanging in the air. As he was looking over to the side, he missed some very important names that had appeared near the bottom, as well as the very last name.
"Can I get up now?" he asked, seeing as the quill had stopped writing on the parchment.
Hearing Harry, the goblins looked up as well. Seeing as the magic had started settling, Archaxe stood and waved him over, asking the attendant goblin near the door to take the parchment to Snaptooth's office as Harry walked up to them.
"Very well Master Potter, I am finished, and the results of your test are waiting for you in Snaptooth's office."
Surprising the third goblin that day, Harry bowed and said, "Thank you Rune-master Archaxe, for taking the time out of your day for me."
This made Archaxe pause and look over to the young heir, who had now stood up again. The rune-master nodded, a bit jerkily, before looking over to the other goblins who both had smirks on their faces, as if laughing at him having the same reaction they did when Harry showed them the same amount of respect.
After Archaxe left the room, presumably to go back to his own office, Harry and Snaptooth went back to Snaptooth's office to go over the results of the inheritance test, as well as go over the questions that Snaptooth still had from before. Harry also wanted to see if there was a reason for him not receiving mail, and if there was a way to circumvent it in the future.
Once Harry and Snaptooth had sat down again in the office, Harry asked a question.
"Snaptooth, is there any way to see why I have never received any mail or anything? Because its not just from the magical world, I never received any muggle mail either, although I didn't have anyone to talk to growing up, but that's beside the point."
Looking at the young man in front of him, Snaptooth knew that there was a darkness regarding the young heir's past, but it was not the time to dig into that just yet.
"Yes Master Potter, there is." He was interrupted by Harry, who had cringed at the form of address.
"Please Master Snaptooth, its just Harry. Only my house-elf friend Dobby calls me Master, and I have tried very hard to get him to stop. Please, I feel like we will be meeting up many times so I insist you call me by my given name, you may be the closest person to a friend that I have now."
Snaptooth paused at this, the only wizard before them to give a goblin the respect like this had been Merlin Emrys himself, back when the bank had been a few goblin families acting as a treasury for King Arthur. How many times was Harry going to surprise him that day? Surely, he was done.
Giving Harry a somewhat gently smile – for a goblin at least – Snaptooth answered his question from before.
"Thank you, Harry. Now, there is ways to circumvent a mail redirection ward, as well as see who placed it, when it was placed and a way to remove it. Although," here he hesitated, hoping he was wrong, "It may be best to get a complete scan done of you, to test and see how many other wards, spells, potions or anything else may be residing either on you or in your body. With everything you've told me so far, there may be even bigger problems than we can imagine."
Harry gulped. He didn't think about what else could be going on, he just wanted to know why someone had intercepted his bank statements. Also, what was so interesting that they had to steal them? Surely no one would be that interested in his trust account.
Again, Harry forgot that his trust vault wasn't the only vault he owned apparently.
"Uhh, what sort of scans are we talking about? Will they take long?" he asked nervously.
Snaptooth thought for a minute, about how many blocks he believed could be on Harry, and how many healers he knew would be on staff in the Gringotts infirmary.
"The scans would be done with the healers in our healing facility, alongside a curse-breaker, and if its just the mail ward that needs breaking, possibly around twenty minutes. Although, I must warn you Harry, I have a feeling that there are multiple blocks on you, and each one will take time to either break or transfer."
Getting a feeling, Harry asked "How much are all these scans going to cost? I don't know how much I have in my vault right now, 'cause I don't have any statements."
Snaptooth just grinned again, "Harry, these scans wont cost much for you, I have evidently forgotten to show you the results of your inheritance test. You needn't worry about Galleons for a very long time." And he handed the parchments from the test earlier over to the young wizard. This was going to be enjoyable.
It was a lot of parchment to go through, so Harry just skimmed the top few pages. As he got through a few more, he started seeing more and more wizarding last names that he recognised today, like the Blacks, Bones, Longbottom's even. Only here and there but still connected.
Then he turned one more page.
He couldn't believe what he was reading. Looking up to Snaptooth for some sort of confirmation that this was all real, he looked back down astonished.
Through his maternal line, it said he was a descendant of Ravenclaw (all names said Squib after them, he would have to ask what that was). Through his paternal line though, well. He couldn't believe it.
Potter, he knew.
Gryffindor, he suspected.
Black? He would have to ask Sirius about that.
SLYTHERIN? Probably through marriage, although that would explain the Parseltongue.
The next two though, they really threw him round the bend.
Merlin Emrys was one of the few near the bottom. Even though that blew his mind, what came next nearly made him faint.
HE WAS THE HEIR OF ARTHUR PENDRAGON?!
"What in MERLIN'S NAME is going on?" Wait, no. He couldn't even say that anymore. Damnit!
Harry's brain couldn't cope with all this information, so it did what it thought was best. It shut down and he did faint back into his chair.
15 minutes later
Snaptooth had been dealing with some parchment work that he had been ignoring while he waited for the soon to be Ruler of Magical Great Britain to wake up. The goblin had seen the different emotions that had flitted across the young mans face as he went through the parchments, although the last face he had made – one of pure astonishment and disbelief – wow, that was one he'd be keeping a memory of, it had been rather hilarious to witness. Thankfully, Harry had passed out before he could hear Snaptooth chuckling at him.
Just as Snaptooth started wondering if he should fetch a healer, he saw Harry's eyes squint open, trying to figure out what just happened.
As Harry began sitting up, and probably trying to process what exactly had happened, Snaptooth pressed the 'come urgently please' rune on his desk. The rune was a pair to one in the assistant's office for the Director of the bank, Snaptooth hoped that the Chief didn't have any other appointments booked for the foreseeable future. This would take a while, he was sure.
"Ugh, Snaptooth. What happened?" Harry groaned as he sat up. "The last thing I remember was reading… HOLY MOTHER OF MERLIN! Wait, no, not Merlin… Grr, what is going on?! None of this can be true, can it? This can't be real, surely it can't. Theres no way that, that, no, none of this can possibly be real!"
Harry was now sitting up and running his hands through his already wild hair, frustration almost pouring out of him… wait, hold up. There was a slight wave in the air around the young wizard that Snaptooth could just about see, almost like a mirage of heat coming off a road in the summer.
"My Lord, I assure you, it is very real. Blood magic is as old as the earth itself, it is an incredibly powerful magic, and the ritual used on you was part of the Olde Magiks of this land. Every part of it is very much the truth." Snaptooth said, very matter of fact.
Harry, whose nose had scrunched when he heard the "My Lord" part, had a hard time believing that. If he was supposedly so powerful, and his family line sooo important, then why had he been dumped and neglected at the Dursley's? Surely someone in the magical community of Great Britain would have asked about where the supposed "Saviour" had gone to after that Halloween? But no, apparently not.
Getting back on track, Snaptooth asked "My Lord, I have gotten the parchment work ready while you were, indisposed," He grinned, "For you to sign so you can receive medical attention from our healers as well as your written consent to undergo the purging ritual to remove any and all blocks, potions and spells that may be on your person." He passed them over to Harry, alongside a quill and ink bottle for him to sign on the edge of the desk in front of him.
"Please Snaptooth, it really is just Harry, when did all this Lord stuff happen anyways?" Harry asked as he reached across for the parchments to sign. Harry was beyond confused and a little irritated, no one had told him about any sort of Lordship. Although that would explain Dobby's comment in the Chamber after he pulled the sword yesterday…
Snaptooth looked down with a bit of pride at still being asked to use such an informal form of address, "Harry, my Lord, your inheritance has shown you, who you descend from. Surely you knew about your Potter Lordship that would have awaited you at fifteen, yes? You are also eligible for the Black Lordship, due to the current Lord being sterile due to his prolonged stay at Azkaban. In addition, as only men could inherit titles in the Middle Ages, and you hold the Gryffindor and Slytherin Heir lines, you are the next Lord of Hogwarts. All of those at once is a massive amount of responsibility, but you are also the heir of Merlin Emrys, who held the Avalon line, as well as his King, Arthur Pendragon's line. You, just Harry, are now in line to become King Harrison James Potter-Pendragon, Ruler of Avalon."
Harry didn't know how to respond to all that. Sure, he had read it, but when Snaptooth put it all together like that? It was more than a lot of responsibility for someone who never knew about his family, especially with how he was raised. He didn't know the first thing about being a Lord, let alone King of the magical world! He just wanted to get through the Tournament in one piece.
Shaking his head with disbelief, Harry finished signing and handed back the parchments to Snaptooth, just as the door to the office opened and in walked the Director of the bank along with two guards, both carrying wicked-looking battle axes and wearing plate armour. The Director simply had a suit, much like the one that Snaptooth wore, but had a golden sash diagonal across his chest with a crest that had a dragon displayed in full roar in the top-centre.
Snaptooth immediately sprung to his feet, bowing as the Director entered. Harry too, had stood as he saw Snaptooth move to stand, copying the account manager in bowing as well, with one hand clenched over his left breast just as Snaptooth had done.
"Well met, Director." Snaptooth began. "Thank you for taking the time to come to this office, I have a very important client I would like you to meet."
This caused one of Ragnock's eyebrows to rise, this was a highly unusual meeting to begin with, although he had been a little prepared to see the young wizard bow to him, due to the missive that Griphook had sent to him that afternoon.
Giving his subordinate a nod, the Director turned to look at the other occupant. Harry had stood as Snaptooth straightened, before also greeting the Director.
"Well met Director Ragnock, I am Harry Potter. It is an honour to meet you." And stuck out his slightly trembling hand for the Director to shake, hoping this wasn't against any goblin protocol he didn't know.
Ragnock stood stock still just long enough to make Harry feel uneasy, but just as he went to pull his hand back and apologise, Ragnock took his hand and shook it three times, saying "The pleasure is mine, Harry Potter. Thank you for showing such respect while within my bank. I hope your business has so far been successful?"
Harry, still in slight shock over his results, wasn't sure how to answer that question.
"Actually Sir, I am kind of unsure how to get my head around what I have found. I'm sorry to ask, but is there any way either Snaptooth or yourself can explain to me fully what happens next? I have no idea how to go about it." And he sat back down, running a hand through his hair whilst handing Ragnock the parchments with his inheritance on it.
After conjuring a slightly plush armchair for himself and waving at his guards to stand by the door, Ragnock and Snaptooth both sat as well. Ragnock read through the results, as well as listened as Snaptooth spoke to him in Goblin Tongue about what had happened since the previous night with Harry, and everything found out since he arrived at the bank that morning.
While they were conversing, Harry was trying to sort out his jumble of thoughts that were compiling in his head. This was so completely overwhelming. He wondered who he could tell about this when he went back to school.
He had to find a way to let Sirius know, and ask him about the Black heirship, not to mention he still hadn't told him about the Tournament. Ron was out, his jealousy would already be hitting the roof, no need to add fuel to the ever-burning fire. He wasn't sure if Hermione would believe him, she seemed to think him a liar last night, and knowing her, she wouldn't believe that King Arthur existed from growing up in the non-magical world, let alone that the magical world had a monarchy, as she had never mentioned reading about one in all the time he had known her.
But that left Harry stumped on who to trust with this mind-blowing information. He really needed to widen his friend circle, especially if his current friends wouldn't stick by him when he needed them now more than ever.
Oh well, he could easily worry about that when he returned to the castle later. Right now, Ragnock and Snaptooth seemed to have finished their conversation, as they were both looking at him.
"Lord Harry," began Ragnock, "After hearing the story of your adventures and heroism, not to mention pulling the famed Sword from the Stone, I have agreed to allow Snaptooth to tutor you in not only the pureblood hierarchy that you will need to know, but also Goblin culture and language, which is not dissimilar to the Ancient Runes you will be learning from now on at Hogwarts, as well as aiding you in learning more about your heritage. I, myself, will aid you in learning how to run a kingdom, and hopefully how to turn the wizarding world onto its head," he said with a slight smirk, "as I fear you will be needing help, in regard to facing the Ministry when you choose to reveal this news."
Harry sat stunned for a moment, then said "Thank you Director. Any help will be most appreciated, especially from you and Snaptooth. I am honoured, although I don't really know anything about the Ministry or how to run anything, let alone a kingdom, so I hope it will not take up too much of your time."
"Not at all Lord Harry. Now," Ragnock gathered up the signed parchments and consent forms, "Shall we go see the healers?"
"Of course." And with that, they all stood, and once Harry checked he had everything that he brought with him, mainly the sword and his wand, the party of five headed off to the infirmary.
