The air outside the Mikaelson mansion was cold and sharp as Sofia stumbled down the steps, her chest heaving with sobs. The night seemed impossibly dark, the stars hidden behind a thick layer of clouds. She didn't know where she was going, but she couldn't stay there—not after what she'd just witnessed.

Kol's lifeless body. Klaus's cold, determined eyes. The dagger gleaming in the dim light.

Her mind raced as her feet carried her aimlessly through the streets of Mystic Falls. Every word, every action replayed in her head like a broken record.

She ended up at the edge of Wickery Bridge, the place where so many moments in her life seemed to come full circle. Leaning against the railing, she tried to steady her breathing, but the weight of everything pressed down on her like a crushing force.

"Running away won't solve anything, love."

The voice sent a shiver down her spine. She turned to see Klaus standing a few feet away, his expression unreadable.

"Go away," Sofia said, her voice hoarse.

Klaus stepped closer, his hands in his pockets. "I can't do that. Not when you're like this."

"Like what?" she snapped, tears streaking her face. "Angry? Hurt? Confused? Because of you?"

Klaus's jaw tightened, but his voice remained calm. "I didn't want you to see that."

"But I did," Sofia said, her voice breaking. "I saw you dagger your own brother like he was nothing."

"He wasn't nothing," Klaus said firmly. "But Kol was reckless. Dangerous. He was going to push you away, or worse, hurt you. I couldn't allow that."

Sofia shook her head, turning back toward the water. "You don't get to make that choice for me, Klaus. You don't get to decide who I need protecting from."

Klaus closed the distance between them, his voice softening. "I did it because I care about you. Because I can't stand the thought of losing you."

"Do you even hear yourself?" Sofia asked, spinning to face him. "You say you care, but you keep showing me why I should be afraid of you."

Klaus's eyes flickered with something—pain, regret, frustration. "I've never claimed to be a good man, Sofia. But everything I do, I do to protect what I care about. You may not understand it, but that's the truth."

Sofia let out a bitter laugh, her tears spilling over again. "You don't protect people, Klaus. You control them. You manipulate them. And when they don't do what you want, you destroy them."

Klaus flinched at her words, his usual composure cracking. "And yet, you're still here. You could have run to anyone—Elena, Jeremy, Caroline—but you came here. To me."

Sofia opened her mouth to argue but stopped. He was right. As much as she hated what he'd done, as much as she wanted to push him away, she couldn't deny the pull that kept bringing her back to him.

"I don't know why I came here," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Klaus stepped closer, his hands reaching out but hesitating before touching her. "Because you know, deep down, that no one will ever care for you the way I do. Not Kol, not anyone."

Sofia's breath hitched, her emotions warring within her. "And what does that mean, Klaus? That I should just accept all of this? That I should be okay with the way you hurt the people around you?"

"It means," Klaus said, his voice low and filled with conviction, "that I'll spend every day proving to you that you don't have to be afraid of me. That I'll protect you, even from myself, if that's what it takes."

Sofia stared at him, her chest tightening with the weight of his words. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe there was something redeemable in him, something worth holding onto. But the image of Kol's lifeless body was still fresh in her mind.

"I don't know if I can do this," she said finally, her voice trembling.

Klaus took another step closer, his hand finally brushing against hers. "Then don't decide now. Just… let me show you. Let me be better for you."

Sofia closed her eyes, tears slipping down her cheeks. The conflict within her felt like it would tear her apart.

When she opened her eyes again, Klaus was still there, his expression raw and vulnerable in a way she hadn't seen before.

"I need time," she said softly.

Klaus nodded, though the flicker of pain in his eyes didn't go unnoticed. "Take all the time you need, love. I'm not going anywhere."

Sofia turned back toward the water, her heart heavy with uncertainty. She didn't know what the future held, but for now, all she could do was try to hold herself together as the pieces of her world continued to shift.

And behind her, Klaus stood silently, watching her with an intensity that promised he would wait as long as it took.
