The house was filled with the sounds of soft whimpers and the occasional cough as Mulder and Scully bustled around, tending to the triplets, who were sprawled out on the couch in various stages of discomfort. Beatrice, Sabrina, and Joanna had all come down with the mumps, their small faces swollen and red from the infection. Their usual energy was replaced with a lethargy that made Scully's heart ache as she watched them.

Scully moved between the living room and the kitchen, preparing bowls of soup and administering pain relievers, while Mulder sat on the floor near the couch, gently rubbing Beatrice's back as she rested her head in his lap. Sabrina was curled up on the other end, her arms wrapped around a stuffed animal, and Joanna sat quietly, her head resting against the arm of the couch as she stared at the television with little interest.

"How are they doing?" Mulder asked, glancing up at Scully as she returned to the room, carrying a glass of water.

Scully sighed, a weary but tender expression on her face. "They're uncomfortable, but we're managing. I gave them some more fluids and fever medicine. They are vaccinated, so those are not terrible cases of mumps. They should start feeling better in a few days, but it's tough seeing them like this."

Mulder nodded sympathetically, brushing a lock of hair out of Beatrice's face as she shifted slightly in his lap. "I think they'll be okay. They're tough little girls."

Scully smiled faintly, though the concern in her eyes didn't waver. "I just wish I could take this away for them. It's hard enough seeing them sick, but when you can't do much about it..." She trailed off, her voice thick with concern.

Mulder reached over, touching her arm gently. "I know. We're doing the best we can. And they know they're safe, right here with us."

Scully nodded, glancing over at the girls, who were all quietly resting now. The house was eerily still, the usual chaos of their lively household replaced by the sound of the occasional cough or sigh from one of the girls.

"Do you think we should try and get them to eat something?" Mulder asked. He had been trying to get the girls to drink some juice, but they had barely touched their food.

"I'll try again with them in a little while," Scully said softly. "I've been offering them soup and crackers, but they don't have much of an appetite. It's not unusual with mumps, but still..."

Just then, Sabrina shifted on the couch, her face scrunched in discomfort. "Mommy... my cheeks hurt," she whimpered softly, her little hands pressing against her swollen face.

Scully immediately knelt beside her, brushing her hair back and offering a gentle smile. "I know, sweetie. It's the mumps making your cheeks sore. But we're taking good care of you, and it will start feeling better soon, I promise."

Sabrina let out a small whine, looking up at her mother with big, tired eyes. "Can I have another ice pack?"

"Of course," Scully said. "I'll get you one right away."

Mulder, who had been silently observing, reached over and took Joanna's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "How are you doing, Jo?"

Joanna, who had been unusually quiet, met his gaze and smiled weakly. "I'm okay. My face feels big." Her voice was barely a whisper, but Mulder could see she was trying to be brave, just like her sisters.

"You're all so brave," Mulder said softly, his heart swelling with affection for the three girls. "We're almost through this, I promise."

As Scully returned with the ice packs and helped Sabrina adjust it on her swollen cheek, Mulder got up to check on Beatrice, who was still curled up in his lap, her eyelids fluttering with exhaustion.

"How's she doing?" Scully asked quietly, glancing over at them.

"She's still pretty out of it," Mulder said, his voice low. "But she's holding up."

Scully came over and gently placed her hand on Beatrice's forehead, feeling for any signs of a fever. "She feels warm, but it's not too bad. Hopefully, the ice packs will help."

The day stretched on, and the two of them worked in tandem to care for the girls, taking turns offering comfort and trying to make their girls feel a little better, even if it was just for a moment. Between giving them medication, trying to get them to drink fluids, and offering soft words of reassurance, the night felt endless.

By the time the evening rolled around, the house was quiet again. The triplets had finally fallen into a light sleep, their swollen cheeks resting against their pillows. Mulder and Scully sat in the living room, their exhaustion mirrored in the silence between them.

"You're doing an incredible job," Mulder said softly, turning to Scully. "I know this isn't easy."

Scully smiled faintly, her eyes tired but filled with gratitude. "So are you. I couldn't do this without you."

Mulder reached over, taking her hand in his. "We're a team, Scully. Always."

She squeezed his hand in return, a small sigh escaping her lips. "Just wish I could make it better for them."

"I know. But they've got us."
