A fresh layer of snow blanketed the hill, its pristine surface glistening under the pale winter sun. Mulder and Scully stood at the top of the hill, three bundled-up triplets bouncing with excitement between them.
"Okay, girls," Mulder said, adjusting Joanna's knit hat as she wriggled impatiently. "This is a classic winter activity. Are you ready for your first sledding adventure?"
Joanna nodded enthusiastically. "I'm ready, Daddy!"
Beatrice gripped the edge of the bright red sled with both hands. "How fast does it go?"
Sabrina squinted at the hill. "It's really steep…"
Scully crouched down to meet Sabrina's gaze, brushing a stray snowflake off her cheek. "It's a little steep, but that's what makes it fun. You'll go fast, but Daddy and I will be here."
Mulder held up his gloved hands. "And no sledding without helmets!" The triplets groaned in unison as Mulder secured their small snow helmets. "Safety first," he said, patting Beatrice's head.
Joanna was the first to climb into the sled, her eyes wide with determination. Mulder gave her a gentle push, and she squealed with delight as the sled zipped down the hill, carving a smooth path in the snow.
At the bottom, Joanna tumbled out, laughing. "It's so fast!" she shouted, waving up at them.
Beatrice went next, gripping the sled tightly as Mulder gave her a nudge. "Woohoo!" she yelled, her voice echoing through the crisp air. When she reached the bottom, she scrambled up to join Joanna, pointing at the tracks her sled had made.
Sabrina hesitated, staring down the hill. "What if I fall out?"
Scully knelt beside her, rubbing her back reassuringly. "It's okay to be nervous, sweetheart. But you're safe, and we're right here. How about we go together?"
Sabrina nodded, her nervousness melting into a small smile. Scully climbed into the sled behind her, wrapping her arms around Sabrina for extra security. With Mulder's push, they were off, sliding down the hill with a mix of laughter and shrieks.
When they reached the bottom, Sabrina turned to Scully, her cheeks flushed with excitement. "Can we do it again?"
The afternoon turned into a series of sledding runs, with Mulder and Scully taking turns sliding down with the girls. Beatrice quickly declared herself the fastest sledder, while Joanna experimented with lying down for extra speed.
At one point, all three triplets piled into the same sled, giggling uncontrollably as Mulder gave them a big push. They tipped over halfway down, landing in a heap of laughter and snow.
Scully ran down to check on them, brushing snow off their jackets. "Are you okay?"
"We're fine!" Beatrice said, her eyes sparkling. "Can we do it again?"
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the triplets started to tire, their movements slowing as they trudged up the hill one last time. Mulder and Scully packed up the sleds, guiding the girls back to the apartment.
Inside, the warmth of the living room greeted them, and the triplets shed their snow gear in a flurry of boots and mittens. Scully handed out steaming mugs of hot chocolate while Mulder started a fire in the fireplace.
Joanna leaned against Scully, her eyelids drooping. "Mommy, sledding is the best," she murmured.
Scully kissed the top of her head. "I'm glad you had fun, sweetheart."
As the triplets curled up under blankets, sharing stories about their favorite sledding moments, Mulder caught Scully's eye.
"Another first checked off the list," he said, grinning.
Scully smiled back, her heart full. "And plenty more to come."
The triplets drifted off to sleep soon after, their rosy cheeks glowing in the firelight, while outside, the snow-covered hills stood ready for another day of winter adventures.
