What happened to Discovery before the space flight to Jupiter in 2001?

"Good morning Dave, good morning Frank, welcome on board Discovery One."

Poole replied "Hello HAL, are you ready to take us to the Moon?"

Then Bowman spoke "Hello HAL, this is Commander David Bowman. Please execute preprogrammed flight plan, one orbit of the Earth then a Trans Lunar Injection to lunar orbit."

Twelve hours later Discovery was in orbit around the Moon.

"Mission Control this is X-ray Delta 1. Deputy Commander Frank Poole speaking. Discovery is now in lunar orbit."

2.5 seconds later came the reply "X-ray Delta 1 this is Mission Control. Begin lunar orbit test program."

Over the next week Bowman and Poole (with a lot of help from HAL) put Discovery through its paces. Part of the Jupiter mission plan involved orbiting the Galilean Satellites, so they practiced orbital insertion techniques. Both Poole and Bowman took their space pods on test flights over the lunar surface. Bowman flew over Tycho, not knowing that he flew over TMA-1. They tried firing the ships engines manually without any help from HAL. At the end of the week Bowman and Poole had a video chat with the BBC, this concluded their lunar orbit test program.

Poole asked HAL to take them back to Earth.

Bowman then had a chat with Poole.

"Well done Frank, we did a good job there. Let's go pick up our frozen friends and then head off to Jupiter."

"Kimball, Kaminsky, and Hunter. What did you think of them Dave? I'm surprised we only had a few hours together before they went into suspended animation. I know about conserving resources on the way out but it was strange we had so little time with them?"

"I agree, they seemed smart enough but somewhat evasive."

"Well, I am sure we will get to know them a lot better when we get to Jupiter."

12 hours later, after HAL had put them into perfect orbit, they prepared for the arrival of their suspended animation comrades. A shuttle soon appeared, Bowman stayed on the bridge whilst Poole suited up and went to the pod bay. After HAL opened the pod bay door, the suspended animation units came floating over with a medical team. Poole helped them into the pod bay, then when the doors were closed and the bay was repressurised, the medics carefully brought Kimball, Kaminsky and Hunter down to their shipboard suspended animation units. The medics had a busy six hours checking that everything was OK with the sleeping astronauts, Poole and Bowman kept out of their way. Then HAL announced that he was now monitoring the suspended animation units and all was well.

Poole and Bowman then had a meal with the medics. Poole stayed on the bridge and Bowman suited up, he then helped the medics transfer the last of the supplies from the medical shuttle to Discovery before Bowman and Poole made their final farewells to the medics.

24 hours later

"Mission Control this is X-ray Delta 1. Commander David Bowman speaking. Permission to leave for Jupiter….."
