Emma had just settled into her booth at Granny's, nursing a fresh cup of coffee, when the scent of apples and cinnamon filled the air around her. She didn't even have to look up to know Regina was there.
Her body tensed instinctively as she slowly lifted her gaze. Regina stood before her, impeccable as always, dressed in a deep crimson blouse and black pencil skirt, her presence commanding the room as easily as she always had.
"Regina," Emma breathed, surprised she was here so soon.
Regina tilted her head, her lips curling into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "May I join you?"
Emma nodded quickly, sitting up straighter as Regina slid into the seat across from her. Her hands trembled slightly as she set her coffee down, bracing herself for whatever Regina had to say.
"I got your message," Regina said smoothly, her voice as controlled as ever.
Emma swallowed, searching Regina's face for any sign of the vulnerability she had seen the night before. But it was gone. The mask was back in place, and it made Emma's stomach twist uncomfortably
"And?" she asked hesitantly.
Regina took a sip of her tea before answering. "I believe you, Emma. I believe that you want to fix this." She set her cup down delicately and leaned forward slightly. "But wanting something and earning it are two very different things."
Emma frowned. "I know I hurt you, Regina. I'm not going to pretend that one apology will fix everything, but I meant what I said. I will prove it to you."
Regina hummed, considering her for a moment before nodding. "Very well. Then let's see if you truly have what it takes."
Emma narrowed her eyes. "What do you mean?"
Regina smirked. "You will have to earn back my trust. And, Emma, I don't make things easy. If you truly want me, then I expect you to fight for me."
Emma felt a rush of determination. "I'll do whatever it takes."
Regina's smirk widened, and for the first time in a long time, a flicker of amusement danced in her dark eyes. "Good. Then let's see if you can handle what I have in store for you."
Emma should have been nervous. But instead, she felt a fire ignite in her chest.
This wasn't just about proving her love. This was about proving to Regina that she belonged to her.
And she was ready to play the game.
