Chapter 112: Have a Dynamax Adventure Part 1
A week after their adventure in Hisui, life had returned to normal in Vermillion City. Currently, Goh was in the park with Ash and Lillie feeding the Pokemon. Or at least, he was trying to.
"Everyone relax! You'll get your food, but you need to stop swarming me!"
Ash chuckled, amused by the sight of Goh being lovingly attacked by his Pokemon.
"Ah, don't worry about it, Goh. That's just their way of showing how much they love you!"
"I get that," the other boy said. "I just wish they would do it one at a time!"
Eventually though, they managed to get everyone fed and settled in.
"Phew!" Goh gasped, mopping sweat off of his brow. "Glad we got that settled."
Suddenly, his phone pinged, indicating he got a message. Pulling it out, he was surprised to see that it was a notification from Project Mew.
"Guys, my next Trial Mission is here!"
"Cool, what is it?"
Goh opened the app, but was surprised by what he saw. The mission had no info, only a title and a location:
"Have a Dynamax Adventure? Crown Tundra, Galar."
"The Crown Tundra?" Lillie said, curious. "I've never heard of that before."
Chloe took out her Rotomphone, and pulled up the information.
"I knew I recognized that name from some place! The Crown Tundra is an offshoot of the Galar Region, South of Postwick. It's an icy island with a harsh climate, but many people come there because of rumors of super strong Pokemon. Some claim to have even seen Legendary Pokemon roaming the land."
"Legendary Pokemon, huh? I wonder if that's why Project Mew is so invested in it."
Ash stood up, excited.
"Alright! Let's get going!"
But Goh pushed him back down, shaking his head.
"Sorry, but the mission info clearly states that only challenges may take part in this mission. No outside help allowed."
Ash slumped down, disappointed.
"Aw, man! Well, then go win one for me!"
"Can do!"
After a long flight and a train ride, Goh finally arrived at the Crown Tundra. The moment he stepped out of the station, he was hit with an extreme blast of cold, making him shiver.
"Man, and I thought Circhester was bad. Come on Cinderace, the start isn't too far from here."
"Cinderace!"
After a few moments of walking, they reached the cave entrance to the Dynamax Adventures area. When he got there, he was surprised to see a challenger already waiting for him.
"Gary?"
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Goh! And here I thought you'd have given up by now."
Goh rolled his eyes, and chose to ignore that comment.
"Looks like we have to work together again. Great!"
"Ah, don't be like that! You're not the worst partner I could be paired up with."
"Gee, thanks. So, should we get started?"
Gary shook his head, and pointed to the sign behind him.
"Read the sign, it says we need four people before we can go in. So far, you're the only one I've seen."
"Goh, Gary!"
Their wait wasn't long, for just as Gary said that, Horace approached the cave, greeting them both with a high five.
"Horace, long time no see!"
"I'll say! I haven't seen you guys since Cinnabar Mansion."
"That makes three," Gary mused.
"And I make four!" Came a voice, as Green appeared.
"Green, long time no see!"
"Good to see you, Goh! Been working hard on those trial missions?"
"I sure have! I currently have 11 tokens."
"I've got six, so let's hope I can get some more today!"
Gary just snorted, making Green angry,
"And what's so funny?"
"Oh, just the fact that you think having six tokens is impressive! You'll never be a chaser with that attitude."
"Oh yeah? And how many tokens does the great Gary Oak have?"
Gary smirked, and held out his Rotom Phone to show that he has…
"15?!"
"It pays to not slack off. You've got a lot of catching up to do, kid, so try not to fall behind."
And before Leaf could say anything else, Gary walked away whistling, leaving Green fuming, but Goh held her back.
"Don't let him get to you. Remember what happened with Sterling?"
Green sighed, and controlled herself.
"Thanks, Goh. I just hate guys like that!"
"So do I, but unfortunately we need him for the mission."
After Green had calmed down, they each approached Gary and Horace, who were looking at the description on the wall.
"Alright, we all set?"
"Not quite. We need to leave all of our Pokemon here."
"What?!"
Gary pointed towards the rules list, as well as a bin of Pokeballs.
"According to this, the dynamax energy is too strong for ordinary Pokemon to handle, and could cause them to go berserk. Hence, anyone who wants to try and do this needs to borrow a rental Pokemon that's been trained to withstand it."
Goh glanced around, noticing an odd lack of supervision.
"If there are people training these Pokemon, then where is everyone now?"
This made everyone stop and ponder it, but eventually they just shrugged it off.
"Who knows? Maybe that's what we were sent here to find out."
"In that case, we'd better get started."
Stepping up to the container of rental Pokeballs, each of the challengers carefully picked out one. Once they had chosen one, they opened them up to see who their partners would be for the time being.
Horace had chosen a Charmeleon, Green a Ivysaur, Gary a Wartortle, and Goh a female Raichu.
"Hey, this isn't too bad! I raised my Venusaur from a Bulbasaur, how hard can an Ivysaur be?"
"A Charmeleon, huh? I'm not familiar with the Kanto starters, but I'm always up for a challenge."
"Well, I'm not familiar with Raichus, but having seen Ash's Pikachu in action enough times, I think I can work off of it."
But Gary had a different response. After taking a good long look at Wartortle, he returned him and walked over to Goh.
"Hey Goh, do you mind trading with me?"
"Uh, I guess not, but why? I figured since you have a Blastoise, using a Wartortle would be easy."
Gary chuckled.
"Of course it would, which is why I want to trade. I'm not going to become a Chaser by taking the easy route! Only a fool would do that."
Green could tell that comment was directed at her, and could only grit her teeth in annoyance. Goh, not wanting to add any unnecessary drama, returned Raichu to her Pokeball and handed it to Gary, accepting Wartortle's Pokeball in return.
"Thanks! Now come on, let's have a Dynamax Adventure!"
As the quartet neared the first den, Gary suddenly held out, stopping everyone in their tracks.
"Hey, watch it!" Green snapped, but Gary ignored her.
"Does everyone have a Dynamax band?"
The other three challengers nodded, lifting their hands to reveal the bracelets.
"Why?"
"Didn't you read the rules? Only one of us can Dynamax at a time, and if we're going to make it through this, we're going to need to use that wisely."
Green just scoffed.
"Obviously, it should go to whichever Pokemon has a type advantage over the one we're facing! And you're supposed to be Professor Oak's grandson?"
Gary just smirked.
"We'll see how well that works, won't we? Come on, the first den is just up ahead."
Sure enough, as the quartet rounded the corner they found themselves face to face with a Gigantamax Butterfree.
"Alright, this will be easy! Go, Ivysaur!"
"Don't get cocky, kid. Raichu, I choose you!"
"Let's do this, Wartortle!"
"Charmeleon, let's go!"
Their Dynamax bands glowed, indicating the Galar particles surrounding them. This gave Green an idea.
"Horace, quick! Dynamax Charmeleon!"
"What?"
"He's a fire type, and Butterfree is a Bug Type! Just do it!"
"Horace, don't!"
Hesitantly, Horace followed Green's advice, much to Gary's annoyance.
"Alright then, let's figure this out. I think if we…"
"Charmeleon, use Max Flare!"
Before Gart could finish his sentence, Charmeleon launched a massive fireball at their enemy, only for it to hit a forcefield between them, shattering it and another. Green and Horace could only stare in shock.
"I tried to warn you," Gary said with a huff. "Look!"
Upon closer inspection, the other three noticed two other force fields surrounding their foe.
"I read some of the information Professor WIllow had on the Dynamax phenomenon. According to him, some Pokemon in these Dens are capable of withstanding even a Max Move. You got lucky by managing to break two of them, but there's still two more. That's why I told you to wait."
Green sighed in frustration.
"Alright, fine, now what?"
Suddenly, Butterfree launched a Max Airstrike, battering all of their Pokemon. Wartortle and Raichu were roughed up, Charmeleon didn't take too much damage, but Ivysaur was knocked out.
"Ivysaur, return!"
"Regret not listening to me, yet?"
"Shut it, Gary!"
Gary chuckled, ignoring her protests before turning to Goh.
"Goh, you're with me. If we're going to beat this thing, we need to break those barriers so that Horace can knock it out before Charmeleon's Dynamax runs out."
"Alright," Goh nodded. "Got any ideas?"
Gary scanned the barrier before them, before pointing to a small fracture at the top right.
"There, aim for that spot! It may be the weakest point, and if we hit it it might break from a few normal attacks."
"Works for me! Wartortle, use Hydro Pump!"
"Raichu, use Rising Voltage!"
The two Pokemon struck the barrier with their attacks, breaking it easily. Now only one remained. Gary then turned to Horace.
"Alright, have Charmeleon charge up a Max Flare, but don't fire until I say so."
"Got it. You heard him, Charmeleon!"
Charmeleon nodded, and began doing so. Gary then turned his attention to the barrier, looking for a weak spot. At last, he pointed it towards a spot in the middle.
"There, right dead center! Raichu, use Focus Blast!"
"Aura Sphere, Wartortle!"
The two Pokemon fired at the barrier, eventually breaking it. Just then, the Dynamax energy flowed into Green's Ivysaur, reviving it.
"Alright, now's our chance! Raichu, Rising Voltage!"
"Wartortle, use Ice Beam!"
"Grass Pledge, Ivysaur!"
The three Pokemon blasted Butterfree with their attacks, and even with a Max Airstrike the Butterfree couldn't beat them. Once it had ceased resisting, Gary then turned to Horace.
"Now!"
"Right! Max Flare, Charmeleon!"
Charmeleon launched a massive fireball, engulfing Butterfree and knocking it out. Gary then took out a Pokeball, Dynamaxing it and throwing it into the air, capturing it. After a few shakes, the ball dinged and shrunk down, confirming the battle was over.
"Alright, we did it!"
"Way to go, guys!"
Just then, Gary's phone dinged.
"Notification from Dynamax Adventures, Inc. Would you like to trade your Wartortle for this Butterfree?"
Gary smirked, and declined.
"Nah, Raichu will work just fine. Come on, the path ahead is this way. Oh, and Green? Try not to do anything stupid."
Green was about to retort, but Gary had already started walking, leaving her to grit her teeth.
"Oooh, that Gary! I'll show him who's boss!"
