Chapter 4: Development
Zaun
Early Morning
Jayce was up before Vi and Caitlyn as he sat upon the balcony, looking out onto the Undercity. He had been up for a while and saw a lot. It's hard to imagine what has been going on down here.
"Up early?" A voice said.
Jayce turned around and it was LeBlanc. She had a cup of coffee for him, giving it to him. He nodded and thanked her as he sipped the cup. "I've been up for a while, watching everything going down."
"Not like Topside, is it?" She asked
Jayce said. "Same shit, different coat of paint…Silco keeps them like this and the Council enforces the oppression..." He sighed. "I have my work cut out for me down here as well.."
LeBlanc nodded. "Just take care of Violet…she's been through a lot of pain in her life…keep an eye on her for me..."
"I promise...and thank you for the coffee." He smiled.
The Lady walked away to leave Jayce to his thoughts.
Vi awoke a bit after and got up stretching. She saw Jayce on the balcony and approached. "I half expected you to sleep in."
Jayce handed her some of the coffee. "Couldn't sleep."
She took the mug, drinking some and asked. "How are you feeling?"
"Better…just shaken up from that nightmare…" He explained.
Vi then asked. "Do you have that dream often?"
Jayce nodded. "Almost every night…"
"I have the same dream as well…" She sipped.
"The night your sister was taken…" Jayce said
"Bingo..." She sighed. "I keep thinking what I could have done differently…what I should have…" She teared up.
Jayce gently touched her cheek and she looked up at him.
"We all have things we wish we could change…but…we can't...you're not to blame for that night…it was Silco…and I promised you we would find your sister and take him down." Jayce smiled gently.
Vi chuckled softly. "You really are a ray of sunshine, aren't ya, Pretty Boy?"
"I try…" Jayce said with that playboy smile.
The two looked out in silence. Vi then broke it by saying. "Thank you…"
"For what?" Jayce looked over.
"For saving me…if it wasn't for you, I would still be rotting in a cell…you've given me a chance to make up for the mistakes I made..." Vi said as she rubbed her arm.
Jayce replied. "Everyone deserves a second chance...no matter how hard it is."
"Even for Victor, after what he did to you?" Vi raised an eyebrow.
The man was silent as he reflected on the statement. Viktor screwed him royally but…did he deserve to die over it. "I don't know..." Jayce sighed.
Vi was about to say something else when Caitlyn came onto the balcony yawning. "Mornin'. I assume you both slept well."
Jayce held up his hand flat down and part way, and shook it side to side. "Eh, so so. Could have been better, but definitely bad. Slept in worse places during my travels."
Caitlyn sat with them. "You never did say what happened when you were gone. It was obvious you were not studying."
Vi was listening.
Jayce sighed. "It's a story for another day…for now, we need to work out a plan. I believe the best course of action is to divide and conquer. We need to keep a watchful eye on the Barons and Council. Once we do that, then we can deal with Viktor." He said as he got up from his spot.
Vi nodded. "I can reach out to some old friends here. And maybe...get in contact with the gang known as the Firelights." She answered.
"I can try and use the Counselor privilege to get information." Caitlyn replied.
Jayce nodded as he got his armor on. "And I will continue my recon. We still have the Baron meeting in two days. Until then, we stay in contact." He gave them communication earpieces. The women looked at them confused.
Jayce explained. "These will allow us to keep in contact. They work for miles. If anything goes wrong, call each other." He put his cowl on. "We will keep in touch." He jumped off the balcony and glided.
Caitlyn and Vi looked at each other. "Well, let's get going, Cupcake." She smirked and the two walked out as they put the earpieces in their pockets.
The trio split up. Jayce was doing some investigating at one of the Shimmer factories that he saw in Phin's office. Caitlyn was going to her parents to see if she could get any information. And lastly, Vi was going to try and reach out to old contacts
With Caitlyn
Caitlyn made her way back to Piltover, where her parents were leaving. "Mother, father. I need to talk to you."
Cassandra, Caitlyn's mom, dismissed her. "Not now, my dear. I am late for a Council meeting. Head Councilman Viktor has called an emergency gathering."
Caitlyn raised her eyebrow. "Head Councilman? Since when?"
"Since Heimerdinger was cast out by him. He has taken over and we must follow the transition of power." Cassandra explained.
Tobias, Caitlyn's father, nodded in agreement. "Especially since the news about this Bat character has come out. Everyone is on high alert since he helped a convict escape."
Caitlyn kept her mouth shut as she knew exactly what they were talking about. She simply nodded. "I understand. I...just came to grab my spare uniform as I got my other one dirty."
"It's hanging in your room. Be a dear and lock the door on your way out." Cassandra said as she and Tobias left.
Caitlyn sighed in frustration. That did not work how she thought. Best she could do was look in her mothers office. She made her way up the stairs and into her mothers office.
With caution, she rummaged through her files and notes trying to find anything that could work. "Damn…nothing…" She groaned in frustration as she sat in the chair that was in the office itself.
She looked over and saw something that caught her eye...a newspaper clipping.
She picked it up and read it. It was an article from several years ago. The day Jayce's father was murdered.
Caitlyn read over it, seeing there were notes made and things circled. She looked where the newspaper was and found a notepad.
Cassandra was looking into the murder as she believed it was suspicious.
This was huge. If they could convince her to help, it would be huge to Jayce's goal in taking down the Barons and Council.
She smiled. "Finally…a breakthrough." She got up and left to share what she found.
With Vi
The red headed woman walked through the streets of Zaun. She needed something, anything that would help her find the Firelights or anyone for that matter.
And as all hope started to fade…she saw it. A faint blue glow; like a flare. It was high upon an abandoned building.
Her eyes widened. "Powder…" She ran towards it and started to climb.
On the top stood Jinx holding the flare. She was calling her lost sister to help her but...nothing. The flare went out and that was it. She scrunched her face in frustration and threw the extinguished flare off the side. She clenched her gun, growling.
"Powder?" A faint voice said.
Jinx looked over and saw her sister. Standing there in the fog.
"Vi…is that..." The blue haired girl said.
"Powder!!" Vi ran forward and hugged her tightly as she teared up. "I'm so sorry…for everything…I tried to come back but they arrested me…"
Jinx said. "He lied to me about you…"
"I know but it doesn't matter now...we can help you now...get you away from Silco..." Vi said as she touched Jinx's cheek.
Jinx teared up. "I'm not that same girl…I've changed..."
"I know Pow-pow...you did what you had to survive...I had my moments too…but all that matters is we're together now…I have friends from Piltover who-"
That's when Jinx pushed Vi off. "Wait…it's actually true? You're with Topsiders?!"
"Powder, please listen-"
"No!! Powder fell down a well. There is only Jinx now!!" Jinx held up her minigun.
Vi took a deep breath. "If you're going to shoot…do it. I won't fight you."
Jinx stood there, caught between her personalities to figure out what she would do.
"Shut up!! I need to think!! Wait…do you hear that?" Jinx looked up.
Vi looked around and saw a green glow coming from the pipes.
A masked hooded figure came out on a hoverboard.
More followed and Jinx began to fire her minigun.
It was the Firelights!!!
Purple blasts went everywhere hitting the board riders.
The sisters stood back to back as they started to fight the invaders. The duo put up a good fight.
Unfortunately…one hit Vi too hard and knocked her unconscious. Jinx looked over and made a split second decision to run away as her mind was
clouded with so many thoughts.
The Firelights saw Vi lying there and took her with them. Her fate…was unknown.
Meanwhile Jinx ran across the rooftops, crying. Her mind was falling even deeper. But then…she heard something. She looked and saw a figure wearing black in an alleyway, smoking as if he had been on fire. She went to investigate.
Earlier…
With Jayce
The vigilante entered the production factory. He turned in his torch and began to search for anything that would help. Unfortunately it seemed that no one had been there for a long while. The equipment looked dusty and had not been active for at least a few weeks.
He sighed. "Shit…there's nothing here." Jayce continued to search but then…
He heard footsteps. He grappled up above to the rafters and watched as two Enforcers entered with a feline creature that had mechanical limbs. Smeech, another Chem Baron. He was carrying a vial of something and loaded it into one of his mechanical arms.
Smeech looked around. "Burn this place to the ground." He lit a cigarette.
The two enforcers split up and began to trash the place as they poured gasoline on the ground.
One of them was in front of a machine destroying it further, but then Jayce came behind him and slammed the Enforcer's head into the machinery.
Smeech heard it and moved in as Jayce attacked the other one.
Jayce turned and Smeech hit him with his mechanical arm, slicing his exposed face.
A toxin began to enter Jayce's system as he groaned. "What the…" he stumbled
Smeech cackled. "You seem tired. Relax, have a drink." He threw a bottle of alcohol at Jayce and pulled out a lighter."You need to…lighten up." He lit Jayce on fire as he laughed and ran away.
Jayce didn't know what to do as he was on fire. He looked at the window he came in and jumped out into the rainy street, lit ablaze like a torch.
People walking saw him fall into the street and put himself out. He got up and limped into an alley since he was in pain. The vigilante pulled out his grapple gun and made it to the top of a building, groaning.
Jayce pulled out the communicator. "Caitlyn….Vi….Mom...help me..." He dropped it as he laid there. He was reliving the moment he saw his dad get gunned down.
He looked up and saw a figure approaching with two long blue braids. He muttered. "Poisoned...blood…take poison…blood poisoning." He was freaking out, he was badly injured. He had removed his cowl.
Jinx saw the poor man and had to do something. This wasn't Jinx thinking but...Powder trying to break through. She put Jayce on her shoulder and got him somewhere safe. She had to save him.
The girl didn't know where to go. She couldn't go back to Silco. She knew he would kill Jayce. That's when she was approached by a small furry creature. "Miss, I know that man!! I can help him if you follow me." It was Heimerdinger.
Jinx was apprehensive, but nodded and followed him to a little shack. She put Jayce on the table and took a step back. Every voice in her mind was telling her to leave except one. It almost sounded like…Vander.
Heimerdinger sighed as he removed the damaged armor. "Jayce, my boy…what have you been doing?"
He saw the cut and took a blood sample. Looking at it, he could tell that the man had been poisoned. He got to work on making an antidote, but had limited supplies. The furry creature turned to Jinx. "Can you get me these supplies?" He gave her a list. "He will die without them…"
Jinx looked at the list and nodded. "I can…" She quickly ran out.
Heimerdinger looked at Jayce. "You're strong, my boy…you will pull through."
Jayce was breathing heavily as he dreamed…
He heard his father.
"Jayce….stay strong…"
Two days later…
Jayce woke up. He was in his bedroom. Somehow, he had gotten home.
He tried to sit up, but groaned his torso was wrapped in bandages. "What the…"
"Good morning, my son." His mother said, bringing him a glass of water.
He rubbed his head. "How long was I out?"
"Two days. Heimerdinger brought you home along with Caitlyn and a red haired woman. They've been waiting for you to wake up and are downstairs asleep." His mother felt his head and nodded. "I laid out your clothes." She left the room.
The man got out of bed and got dressed. After he left the room, he headed downstairs where he saw Vi and Caitlyn asleep on the couch.
The two were basically snuggled up to each other to keep warm.
Jayce chuckled as he woke them. "I see you two slept well."
The two woke up and saw the other snuggled up to the other. They jumped up.
"With her? Yeah right." Vi crossed her arms.
Caitlyn scoffed. "As if I would cuddle with her."
Jayce got a good laugh. The girls then turned their attention to him, making sure he was okay.
Caitlyn asked. "Are you hurting? Heimerdinger said you were burned and poisoned."
"And that Powder helped you." Vi added.
"Truth be told…I don't remember much that night…that little bastard poisoned me and I started hallucinating…" He rubbed his head. "I saw your sister…and she got me to safety…I heard voices..."
Vi listened. "She stayed with you during that time to help you get home…then she vanished again."
Jayce nodded. "I assume you both have good news for me."
They both nodded and layed out the information they had gathered.
"It turns out my parents have been looking into the death of your father. She made notes on the circumstances during the murder." She showed Jayce what she got.
Jayce listened as he stroked his chin. "Seems like we may have new allies…your parents would be a great help."
"Problem is…they are not fans of the Batman." Caitlyn explained.
"Then we will turn them to our side." Jayce then looked at Vi. "How did it go with the Firelights?"
Vi rubbed her neck. "They…want to meet with you. I didn't get much except that they have been watching us. Their leader wants to meet with us in person. Maybe...you can talk to them and get their help."
Jayce sighed. "It's not much but…it's better than nothing. If only there was more."
At that moment, Ximena came into the room. "Jayce, this came for you." She handed him an envelope.
Jayce raised his eyebrow and took it. It was white and gold with black writing.
To Jayce Talis and company,
You are hereby invited to the High Society Annual Ball.
You and your party Miss Caitlyn Kiramman and Miss Violet of Zaun are invited to attend the celebration at these coordinates.
Tell nobody and we will see you there.

Vi and Caitlyn looked over his shoulder, lightbulbs going off in their heads.
"I think we have another lead." Caitlyn said.
"And it's for tonight. Maybe…it has something to do with the Baron meeting as well."
"Only one way to find out." Caitlyn said.
"One problem. Dress code." Vi pointed. "There's no way in hell you two are getting me into some frilly topsider dress."
The two Topsiders slowly turned towards Vi, devilish smirks upon their faces.
"No no no no!!" Vi shouted.
That night...
The trio arrived at the ball. Jayce was wearing a beautiful white tux with gold accents. His undershirt was black and he had a red bow tie. Caitlin wore a purple dress adorned with gold jewelry and her hair done in a bun with gold hairpins. Vi had on black high waisted skin tight leggings, with thigh high black and gold boots, a long white flowy peekaboo shoulder blouse, and shawl that draped over her shoulder down the front making it look as if she was wearing a dress. She made a huge compromise with them.
Jayce smiled. "You look stunning, Vi." He looked at her in absolute awe.
Vi blushed. "Shut up…I'm only doing it for the case."
Caitlyn giggled. "You are adorable when you blush."
Vi had no reply.
The trio made their way to the table of refreshments and got some champagne.
Vi took a sip. "Hm...not what I expected."
"It's not really all it's talked up to be…." Jayce said as he drank.
Caitlyn then asked. "I assume you brought your…other suit?"
Jayce nodded. "I had someone bring it earlier. It's hidden for when I need it."
They nodded. Then all the attention was directed towards the entrance as Head Councilman Viktor entered the ball. Reporters were taking pictures and trying to get interviews. Viktor simply shrugged them off and made his way over to Jayce. "Ah Jayce. It's been a while since we talked."
Jayce nodded. "Yes, it has…" He took a deep breath. "I see you recovered from the theft of your Hexstone."
The scientist scoffed. "The blue haired rat simply stole a fake. I would never be foolish to leave my work in the open. It could get stolen…like yours~." He smirked.
Vi clenched her fist as the mention of a blue haired person. She knew who Viktor was talking about. Jayce took her hand in his to calm her.
"I suppose you're right, Viktor. You always knew better." Jayce added.
Viktor nodded. "Well I must be off. You three enjoy the party." He walked away.
Jayce looked at Vi. "You got to stay calm."
Vi growled. "He called my sister a fucking rat. He's lucky I didn't rip his face off."
He touched her cheek. "I know, but we have to keep a low profile or we will never get our chance to get back at him."
Vi looked at his hand and took a deep breath. "You're right…I'm sorry...I didn't think…"
Caitlyn replied. "It's okay...it happens to all of us."
Vi nodded. "Let's get to work…"
"I agree..." Jayce smiled.
It was time to start.
