Chapter 1: Gone with the Wind

"Seth No!" Bella screamed.
The newborn battle was raging on and somehow someway Victoria had slipped through. To make matters worse, Seth had been dragged off by two newborns who had double-teamed him.
She stood in terror as Riley ripped off Edward's head. Victoria had her pinned forcing her to watch.
She heard the screams but it took her a minute to realize it was her. She was the one screaming.
Before she could make a decision she felt the wind knocked out of her and everything faded to black.

…..

No!SETH! Leah shouted through the pack's mind as she heard her brother scream. The pack could see in their mind's eye that Seth was surrounded by two newborns, one of them had bitten him.

LEAH LOOK OUT! Jacob shouted. Before Leah could act a newborn found its way around her neck of course, Jacob knocked him over just in time. But that wasn't good news for Jacob, the newborn then came after him. Crushing his body.

As the wolves and their reluctant allies finished off the newborns, Carlisle, Embry, and Quil ran to Jacobs's aid.

"Jared! We have to help Seth! Let's go!" Sam ordered before he phased again. However, A silver streak had flown past them. Flickering in and out of their mind's eye.

Sam? Is that- Jared questioned cutting himself off, refusing to say the name.

Yeah, that's him. Looks like he's going to get there before us. Sam responded. Exhaustion was laced in Sam's words. Exhausted from the battle, Exhausted from the pack. Sam's mind was split in two, worry for Seth, and worry for Jacob. If Seth had truly been bitten, that could lead to deadly consequences. And if Jacob's body was broken as it seemed they would have to rebreak Jacob's bones and hear him suffer excruciating pain.

A blood-curdling scream reached their ears as they made it up the mountain. Three piles of ash and smoke surrounded them but lying next to it was Seth, his arms and legs broken, and there on his collar bone was a deep bite mark.

However, to their surprise, leaning over Seth was his third in command.

Paul lahote. The bane of his existence and yet he was their toughest and strongest fighter.

"paul? what are you doing?" Sam asked as he and Jared ran up to them.

Paul didn't respond instead he had what looked like his lips attached to Seth's collarbone.

He then waved his hand behind him gesturing to something. Their eyes followed where Paul was pointing behind himself and Sam fell to his knees.

On the ground was a decapitated Cullen. He believed it was the mind reader but it wasn't the mind reader that bothered him.

It was the trail of blood that led off the mountain.

A trail of Bella's blood. His pack sisters' blood.

Knowing Seth was in Safe hands, for now, Sam bolted towards the trail phasing so he could follow the scent.

No, no, no, Bella please no. he prayed. We just got her back.

Sam's mournful howl pierced the August evening as he came to where the trail ended.

The pack had just gotten their little sister back. It had been a hard year but together the pack had brought her out of the depression she was once in. The moment his pack of three found her in the woods, he knew things would be different from there. A week after he found her, Sam was knocking on the swan's front door.

Flashback:

The swan's front door opened to reveal a haggard Chief swan. Black circles under his eyes and his hair disheveled. The poor man looked like he hadn't slept in days.

"oh, Sam Uley? Not be rude but this is a really bad time I-"

A gut-wrenching scream filled the air and before he knew what he was doing, Sam was pushing past Chief Swan and up the stairs. The screams with the scent of fear and adrenaline wafted up his nose. Whatever was going on, Bella Swan was terrified. He entered the room, ducking down so he didn't hit his head on the doorpost, and recoiled as the scent of vampires filled his nose. It was a Cullen that's for sure but it still stunk. Sam powered through to reach Bella, and when he did he felt his heartbreak and his wolf howled in despair.

Under a thick blanket was a small lump. Tossing and turning, the screams getting louder.

He could hear Chief Swan standing in the doorway, persuading him to leave but it fell on deaf ears.

Not being able to take it any longer, he stripped the covers off the bed, and trembling before him was Bella Swan. It had only been a week but she looked like she hadn't eaten in months. Her hair was oily, she had dark circles under her eyes and she was practically malnourished.

"Bella?" he called.

She didn't respond, she was still stuck in her head. Her eyes closed tightly.

Sam called her name again but she continued to cry and scream.

Throwing out all rational thought, Sam picked the girl up practically swaddling her as if she was a baby. Pulling her ear to his heart.

"Bella. You have to wake up. They can't hurt you anymore. He can't hurt you anymore."

To his surprise, Bella responded.

"He broke my heart. They all did. He left me alone in those woods."

"I know. It's going to hurt for a while but broken hearts heal precious one."

"it hurts." She sobbed.

Sam didn't respond. He simply held her tighter to him. He had no clue what he was doing here. He thought he was doing this out of tribal duty, making sure the girl who ran with vampires wouldn't be a harm to his people. Instead here he was holding on to her as if the world depended on it. This young girl in his arms wasn't a threat, she was someone to be protected.

Someone precious.

It was then that Sam made a decision.

…..

"Sam, I can't ask you or your wife to do this." Chief Swan pleaded with him as he held Bella's suitcase.

Sam gently took the suitcase and smiled.

"good thing you didn't right. Listen, chief swan you're a good man and a good father but…Bella can't heal ..here. not right now. I know you mentioned something about sending her to her mother but that freaked her out, and it takes a village to raise a child as they say. You can't do this by yourself. You can't miss another day of work and you need a full night's rest yourself. So please let us help you."

Chief Swan sighed as he took a glance at his little girl, wrapped in a blanket in Sam's truck. Her eyes didn't hold the same light as they used to and he knew Sam was right. He couldn't help her right now. Not in the way she needed. This wasn't just a simple break up….this was something else.

"you take care of my little girl. I'll be over there as soon as I get done with my shift." He told him sternly.

"of course sir. You have my word."

Over the next three months, Bella stayed with him and his imprint. It turns out he wasn't the only one who had a soft spot for her. First, it was Jared he would often tickle Bella until she laughed. Then when Embry phased, the two of them would watch corny soap dramas; Jacob black turned up to help too. Those two were practically inseparable. And as his pack grew, every one of them began a pack bond with the girl he had taken in. All of them except for one. But Sam hadn't been concerned about that. His third in command kept his distance from everyone. Only showed his face when he had to.

Sam didn't even have to explain that they were wolves to his little sister. Jacob opened his mouth a while ago and she had caught them wrestling in his backyard. Instead of screaming and running away, his little sister had jumped into the pile of fur accepting all the licks and sniffs they would give her.

Eventually, a whole year had gone by and Bella Swan wasn't the same person she used to be.

She was pack, loved, and cherished. She blossomed under the pack's care. But that didn't stop life from interfering. The freaking redhead had turned up and killed a close friend of Charlie's. This led to a slew of funeral plans and more patrols.

One night while Bella was at her father's, she, Jacob, and Leah were cooking for the funeral when the phone rang. Jacob being the closest answered and told whomever it was that Charlie was planning a funeral.

Two days later, Alice Cullen was carrying an unconscious Bella out of the house. Brady and Colin the pups of the pack were with her but were helpless when it came to the seer vampire. They wanted to attack but didn't want to hurt Bella and when they raised the alarm the pack was too late.

Bella was gone.

….

For two weeks the pack was in utter chaos. They hadn't heard from Bella and Charlie Swan was on a rampage.

His daughter was gone and the last people to see her were Colin and Brady. How do you tell a man that a vampire kidnapped his daughter and the wolves with her couldn't do anything about it?

But Sam had thanked God a thousand times over when he got a call from an unknown number one day.

"Uley." He barked angry and tense.

"Sam!" a hoarse and tired voice cried.

The cup in Sam's hand shattered.

"Bella? Bella, where are you?" he asked.

As soon as her voice was heard, the whole pack froze.

"Sam! I am sorry Sam! I didn't want to leave! She knocked me out! she made me! I-"

Sam growled, shaking the house as the spirit of his wolf arose.

"There is no apology needed or wanted from you precious one of the pack. Now, tell us Where. Are. You?"

"I'm in a bathroom at an airport in Italy. I had to borrow a stranger's phone. Our plane leaves in an hour. Please Sam I need you guys. I need our pack. and my dad… I know it's a secret but-"

"Breathe little girl. We will be there."

And then the phone went dead.

….

Sam stood with half his pack and Chief Swan next to him. Chief black was just as concerned and demanded to go with them.

So there they were waiting at two in the morning. The airport was not as busy this time of morning.

"Sam, are you sure about this? I should have called for backup! They kidnapped my daughter."

Billy was the one to soothe Charlie's ruffled feathers.

"Just hold your composure, Charlie. As we told you before, the Cullens are not like other people, and neither are the boys. They are something….different. That's all we can say for now."

It was then Jacob let out a growl. Quil and Embry followed suit. Sam put his hand up to silence them.

"be still all of you. We will show decorum when our pack sister arrives and a united front in the presence of our enemies." Sam ordered.

Another hour went by when the pack stiffened and stood. All of them aligned with their alpha. Dark looks on their faces.

"she's coming," Brady whined. "I can feel her. She is scared, worried and she's angry" he then tried to go ahead of the pack, but Leah held him back.

"calm pup. Calm."

The pack was ready to climb out of their fur as the scent of leech permeated the air. As one they turned to see five of the Cullens approaching their left flank.

"Chief Swan? I am surprised to see you here." Dr. Leech as Sam liked to call him greeted. He was feigning surprise but Sam could see the cracks in his armor. The Dr. was scared no, correct that terrified.

"oh, that's a pot of crock coming from you. You don't think I know what's going on here. Oh, I know Carlisle. I know what you and your family are and I swear if I could I'd shoot you where you stand. All the hell you've caused my family. I-"

"chief. It's Bella." Billy announced as he reached up to tap his friend.

Charlie turned to see three people coming down the escalator. A woman with short spiky hair, Alice he recognized. Next to her was Edwin, the bane of his daughter's existence, and finally there was his daughter. Her hair was a mess, arms crossed and a look of fury and fear on her face. Dark circles under her eyes.

Low growls were heard as Edward tried to wrap an arm around Bella's waist but she pulled herself away from him and practically threw herself off the escalator. Sam was there to catch her scooping her up and hiding her in the arms of the pack. Charlie was torn between wanting to strangle the Cullens and comforting his little girl.

"daddy.." Bella choked out as tears ran down her face. And of course, Charlie chose the latter.

Nothing would come before his little girl.

"Oh, baby girl. It's gonna be ok. I promise. Sam-"

"Don't worry Charlie. Why don't you get her to my house? You both can stay the night. We will take it from here. Quil and Embry will go with you."

As soon as Bella was taken out Sam turned his yellow eyes on the Cullens. They had swarmed the mind reader and the short one with him.

"We have things to discuss."

End of flashback.

And that's how they got here. United with their enemy and trusting them to watch his little sister. His pack mate.

Sam hung his head. He was a bad alpha. A horrible leader. How could he let this happen?

"alpha." A dark voice called.

Sam looked up to see Paul looking at him with bright yellow eyes. His eyes followed the trail of blood that stopped at the trunk of the tree.

"you have a pack that needs you." was Paul's curt reply. "Do not allow the loss of one to deter you from the needs of the others."

With that said Paul helped him up but as Sam began to walk back he realized Paul wasn't following him. And when he turned to look.

He realized

"Paul?" he called. No response.

"PAUL!" he shouted louder.

Still no response.

Paul was gone…
