CHAPTER - 71 Outstanding Employee

Outside the Land of Grass, the falling snow and gentle winter breeze created a serene atmosphere. Meanwhile, inside the Scientific Ninja Tool Manufacturing Plant, the workers were buzzing with anticipation. The long-awaited day had finally arrived - the day they would receive their wages.

Truth be told, they had stopped expecting to be paid a long time ago. Since their arrival in the Land of Grass, they had dedicated themselves to their work without receiving any form of compensation. However, they didn't mind. In the Land of Rain, they had faced unemployment, hunger, and constant fear. But in the Land of Grass, they had found stability and security. They had jobs that ensured their children had enough to eat. What more could they ask for? And now, unexpectedly, the Grass Village was going to pay them.

The village leader had kept their promises, fulfilling one commitment after another. Not only that, they will even be given some time off after receiving their wages. So, despite the late hour, all the workers obediently gathered in their green protective suits provided by the Land of Grass, their faces beaming with excitement.

Among them stood Koujou, positioned at the front, stealing glances at his wife and daughter nearby. A faint smile graced his lips as he took in the sight. Even his daughter wore a smaller version of the green protective suit, providing warmth in the winter and comfort throughout the year.

Despite Koujou's composed exterior, a trace of nervousness lingered within him. The possibility of being recognized as an outstanding employee left him uncertain. Doubts and questions swirled in his mind. Will he truly win?

Despite Captain Yamafuji's reassurances and positive remarks about him, Koujou couldn't shake off his anxiety. Memories of a previous incident, where he unintentionally got involved with a spy, haunted his thoughts. He feared being misunderstood by the Grass Village, jeopardizing his job, and potentially bringing trouble to his wife and daughter.

During the investigation by the Grass Village representatives, Koujou had expected harsh treatment and possible detention. However, to his surprise, they treated him with fairness and understanding. They acknowledged his innocence and encouraged him to continue working diligently. This experience made him appreciate the kindness and compassion of the people in the Grass Village, contrasting sharply with the harsh methods employed by other ninja villages.

Reflecting on the actions of his former Rain Village comrades, Koujou felt a mixture of frustration and disappointment. He had left the Rain Village behind and sought a fresh start in the Land of Grass, yet they continued to pursue him and send spies to gather intelligence. He yearned for an end to this constant interference and deception.

Sighing with a touch of sadness, Koujou couldn't help but feel betrayed by his former classmate, Tobi, whom he had once considered a good person. He had even planned to invite Tobi to his home for dinner. Little did he know that it was all a facade, a deception.

In that moment of contemplation, the atmosphere suddenly fell into silence. Everyone's attention turned upward as they noticed the figure approaching. Excitement and anticipation filled their faces as they recognized the village leader, who had arrived to address the gathering.

Meanwhile, Hato and Daisuke, who had managed to sneak their way into the scene, spotted the Village Leader. Scratching their noses, they couldn't help but express their underwhelmed feelings. In their eyes, the leader didn't appear particularly remarkable or impressive. They had been driven by curiosity and Yahiko's invitation to come here, even though they knew they weren't supposed to be present.

"He's not all that special," Hato muttered with a hint of resentment. "I should've just stayed back in the dormitory and caught up on sleep. This is so boring!" However, before Hato could finish his sentence...

"Shut up!" Daisuke quickly covered Hato's mouth, realizing their conversation was drawing unwanted attention. He apologized and smiled at the people around them, trying to defuse the situation. "He didn't mean it. He's just straightforward with his words, you know!"

Internally, Daisuke couldn't help but curse his friend's lack of restraint. He wondered why Hato is speaking so freely, disregarding the potential consequences. Wasn't he afraid of getting into trouble?

Yahiko and Nagato, standing beside them, exchanged a helpless glance. They knew that deep down, Daisuke was a good person, but his sharp tongue sometimes got him into trouble.

Meanwhile, Konan shot Daisuke an angry glare, feeling irritated that he had insulted Akihiko-sensei. Akihiko-sensei had always been kind to them, except for when it came to assigning homework. But insulting him was unforgivable in Konan's eyes.

"You're still talking back?" Daisuke, noticing Konan's glare, quickly realized the inappropriateness of their conversation and wanted to prevent any further trouble. He shifted his attention to Hato's green protective suit and decided to change the subject. "Just make sure you behave, alright?"

"Um... um... I'm wearing this suit because my clothes got chewed up by a dog. I don't have any other clothes to wear!" Hato explained, feeling a tad embarrassed when he noticed Daisuke looking at the green protective suit he was wearing.

"I know," Daisuke nodded with a calm expression, choosing not to dwell on the topic. Instead, he continued, "I heard that the project team leader approached you recently, offering generous wages and requesting your assistance?"

"How did you know that? I didn't mention it!" Hato's face instantly froze, and Daisuke understood his concern. Keeping his composure, Daisuke explained, "I applied for a job a while ago, hoping to find some short-term employment. I'm running low on funds. However, since my ninjutsu skills aren't exceptional and I can't take on missions, the higher-ups noticed that I have a knack for water-style jutsu. So, they suggested that I contribute by doing some manual labor in the fields."

Daisuke observed Hato's surprised reaction and asked, "Did you agree to it?"

"No! Absolutely not! I'm from the Land of Rain!" Hato quickly changed his tune, aware of the unfriendly gazes directed towards him and recalling the incident involving the Rain Ninja spy. "How could I work here? Let me tell you, I always keep my word, even if it means... dying here! Even if I starve to death! I won't go!"

"Heh heh," Daisuke glanced at Hato's well-fitting protective suit and smiled faintly, choosing not to push the matter further.

However, Hato felt like he had stepped on a landmine, causing him to jump up and down in anxiety. "What do you mean? This suit is just a coincidence!"

"I believe you. Now, be quiet. It seems that the Grass Village leader is about to make an important announcement," Daisuke stated, ending the conversation. Hato complied and turned his attention to the unfolding scene before him.

Although he pouted, a flicker of envy and recognition crossed Hato's eyes as he observed the joyful expressions on the faces of those around him.

"Thank you all for your tremendous contributions to the Land of Grass. The Land of Grass will never forget your efforts! Once you're in the Land of Grass, you're one of us! Let us together create a beautiful Land of Grass!" Akihiko declared from the stage.

A wave of excitement rippled through the crowd as Akihiko's words resonated. Akihiko maintained his smile and extended his hand, signaling for everyone to quiet down. "Now, it's time to announce this year's Outstanding Employee selection!"

"He's always been proactive at work, quickly learning the required skills and techniques. He actively seeks guidance from experienced employees to overcome his weaknesses. Never complacent, he strives to acquire advanced knowledge," Akihiko praised, his voice carrying through the crowd.

Meanwhile, As Koujou stood among the crowd, awaiting the announcement, his heart beat a little faster. The anticipation was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. He tried to maintain a calm demeanor, but inwardly, his thoughts raced.

"What if there's someone else who's more deserving? What if they've achieved greater feats than me?" Koujou questioned himself, his anxiety growing with each passing moment.

He glanced around, observing the faces of his fellow workers. They all seemed hopeful, eagerly awaiting the outcome. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement. Koujou couldn't help but wonder if his efforts were enough to stand out among the dedicated individuals who had contributed to the Land of Grass.

The sound of his racing heartbeat echoed in his ears as he waited for the announcement. The suspense was almost unbearable. The weight of expectation rested upon his shoulders, adding to his nervousness.

Time seemed to stretch as the moment of truth approached. The thought of disappointment lingered, and Koujou braced himself for any outcome. Whether he won or not, he vowed to continue working diligently, striving to make a meaningful impact.

Finally, the leader's voice cut through the tension, announcing the outstanding employee. Koujou's heart skipped a beat, and he held his breath, waiting for his name to be called.

"And the winner is... Koujou from Team 1!" Akihiko declared after a brief pause..

The announcement caught everyone by surprise, including Koujou himself. He couldn't believe he had been chosen as an outstanding employee. After a moment of disbelief, warm applause erupted once again, filling the field. People clapped their hands, casting admiring glances at the still-surprised Koujou.

They were familiar with Koujou—the employee who always stepped forward in times of difficulty.

"Go up quickly, Koujou! Don't keep the leader waiting!" someone encouraged. "That's right! What are you waiting for?"

"Oh, oh, oh~" Koujou's wife and daughter, a short distance away, pumped their fists in excitement, cheering him on. Koujou took a deep breath, regaining his composure. With determination in his eyes, he said, "I'll go up now!"

Walking towards the stage with a mixture of nerves and pride, Koujou resembled a primary school student receiving their first small award. He reached the stage after a while, his steps reflecting a hint of stiffness.

"Don't be nervous! Your hard work has been recognized by everyone!" Akihiko smiled, presenting Koujou with the award certificate. "I hope you'll continue to give your best next year."

Koujou stammered with excitement as he accepted the certificate, "I-I... I'll definitely work hard. I won't let the leader down!"

"Now... say a few words to everyone!" Akihiko stepped aside, making room for Koujou. Koujou stood there, momentarily dumbfounded, then turned his gaze to the expectant crowd.

Say a few words? What should he say? Suddenly, he felt utterly lost, unsure of how to express himself. His legs trembled, reminiscent of the nervousness he felt during his first job interview.

Nervous, scared, and worried, Koujou found himself at a loss. However, a familiar voice broke through his unease, "Koujou (Daddy)! You can do it!" He turned to see his wife and daughter, full of admiration and excitement, cheering him on.

With their supportive gazes, Koujou's nerves subsided. He tightened his grip on the microphone, raised it, and took another deep breath. Under the watchful eyes of everyone, he smiled and said, "Thank you, leader. Thank you, Land of Grass, for giving me this opportunity...I am truly honored to receive this recognition. I couldn't have achieved this without the support and cooperation of my colleagues. I'm grateful for the chance to contribute to the growth of the Land of Grass. I promise to continue working hard and giving my best. Thank you all!"

As Koujou's heartfelt words echoed through the field, the crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause

CHAPTER - 71.5 Koujou's Family Outing

At 6 o'clock in the morning, Koujou woke up out of habit. Even though it was his day off, he had grown accustomed to this early waking time from working at the factory. He stretched lazily and gazed at his still-sleeping wife and daughter, their peaceful faces bringing a smile to his lips. What a serene life they led. Quietly so as not to disturb them, he slipped away to the slightly smaller living room.

Since they were a family of three, the Grass Village provided them with a slightly larger room and a smaller living room. However, there was no private bathroom, so they had to use the public washroom outside.

As Koujou entered the living room, he paused for a moment and glanced at the "Outstanding Employee" award hanging on the wall. After a while, a faint smile tugged at his lips as he murmured to himself, "Outstanding employee..."

Not wanting to wake his family, he spoke softly. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, he gathered his toiletries and headed outside.

As he closed the door, he heard a soft click beside him. Turning, he met the eyes of the man who had just come out of the neighboring room. Both of them froze momentarily, but then exchanged smiles and nodded at each other. Next door lived the Ishigami couple, another working pair who had come from the Land of Rain. However, they had no children, likely due to the war and its uncertainties.

They had initially resigned to live out their days like this, but upon seeing the job opportunity, they decided to give it a chance and moved to the Land of Grass. Similar to Koujou and his wife, the Ishigami couple diligently worked in the Land of Grass as well. They were dedicated employees and planned to have a child if they could settle down here.

"Good morning, Mr. Ishigami!"

"Good morning, Mr. Koujou. You're up early too!"

They exchanged greetings, acknowledging the similarities in their work schedules and different work locations that limited their interactions to only a few encounters in the morning and evening.

Dressed in their green protective uniforms, they walked to the bath together, humming a familiar tune. The sight of each other in similar work attire brought warmth to their hearts. They were all fellow workers who had come from the Land of Rain to work here.

They were united by their shared experience as workers. There was no need for formality. As they approached the bath, they joined the company of others who had also woken up early. Smiles and greetings were exchanged among everyone, creating a sense of camaraderie despite the chilly winter morning.

After they finished washing up, they walked back together. When they arrived st their respective doors, Mr. Ishigami held the doorknob and gazed at the heavy snow outside with a hint of emotion. He softly asked Koujou, "Are you planning to go out today with your family?"

"Yes!" Koujou replied, understanding the unspoken meaning behind Mr. Ishigami's question. "It's a rare day off. And are you and your wife also planning to go out today?"

"Yes, we're going to buy some things!"

"You're fortunate."

"Isn't Mr. Koujou as well? And you have a lovely daughter too!"

They exchanged a few simple words before wishing each other a great day and Mr. Ishigami headed into his room.

Koujou smiled, watching him close the door, and then turned his gaze to the snow outside. He murmured, "Such a peaceful life," before opening the door and calling out softly, "I'm back!"

His wife had already woken up and greeted him with a smile. "Breakfast will be ready soon!"

"You've worked hard, Shuko!" Koujou sat down, watching his wife busy in the kitchen, and felt grateful for the peaceful life they now led.

After a while, Ruko woke up too, and the whole family enjoyed breakfast together. It was the first time they cooked at home since arriving in the Land of Grass. Initially worried about how they would manage meals during the holidays without the cafeteria, they were relieved when they received wages and a year-end gift package containing food from the Grass Ninjas.

The family finished breakfast and tidied up. Koujou smiled at his wife, who had the same expectant look in her eyes, as they prepared to go out.

The lights were turned off, windows closed, and the door shut. Ruko clapped her hands in excitement, looking forward to their outing.

"Remember, when we're outside, behave and don't trouble others," Shuko reminded her daughter with a serious expression, though she had a smile on her face.

"I know!" Ruko nodded obediently.

"Don't worry, we have permission to go out!" Koujou assured his daughter with a smile. "Daddy has money today, so Ruko can buy whatever she wants!"

Ruko's eyes lit up, thrilled by the prospect. "Can I really?"

"Of course!"

"Awesome, Daddy is so generous!" Ruko exclaimed happily.

"Koujou~!" Shuko gestured to her husband, reminding him not to let Ruko's enthusiasm lead to excessive spending.

"It's okay! Everyone is so happy today, so let's have fun!" Koujou replied, rubbing his eyes and smiling at his family.

"Let's go!" Both Shuko and Ruko responded enthusiastically.

As they passed through the gate, the Grass Ninja guard bid them farewell with a reminder to return early. The family stepped outside, and along the way, they encountered other workers in green protective uniforms also going out. Smiles were exchanged, and everyone seemed eager for the day.

As they strolled along the busy streets, Koujou's eyes welled up slightly, but a smile of contentment soon graced his face. He whispered to himself, "The Land of Grass is truly lively!"

He tightly held his wife's hand as they walked forward, a sense of appreciation in his heart. Next year, he would work diligently once again to repay the leader for the peace and happiness they now enjoyed.
