Chapter 5
It was another day, Spider-Man was swinging through the streets, simply doing a regular patrol, but also keeping a careful eye out.
'There's still seven of those assassin's around, I've gotta be careful, especially with any criminal with enough confidence also going after the bounty. That incident with Sam, just shows anyone could get hurt. I have to stop this quickly.' I thought to myself. 'Have really caused that many problems for you Willy that you'd resort to something so...drastic.'
Swinging up to a rooftop, Spidey flipped and landed on it, perching on the ledge as he looked around.
He continued to reflect and wonder about the danger. 'Any one of them could be out there right now, planning something...doing something. Oh boy, I just thought, what if one of them is watching me right now? Vulture would be the most likely up here, but still…'
He looked around warily, trying to ensure nobody was watching him and to his relief, there was no one around. He stood up and considered what his next move should be.
'There's one obvious course of action, Kingpin is behind this, he hired the assassins, put up the bounty...but still, I don't know, I don't have enough evidence to really do anything about it right now.' He considered. 'I'll have to deal with it, to get my hands on more evidence, while keeping an eye out for the assassins.'
Shaking his head, Spider-Man leapt from the rooftop and swung onwards again, heading northwards.
But then suddenly, Spider-Man gasped and changed direction, swinging east now, heading for Midtown.
'Oh damn, I'm gonna be late...I was supposed to meet up with Sam today. We were gonna join Laurel and attend the lecture being given at the School Gym by Professor Miles Warren.' Spidey recalled. 'Gotta hustle.'
Spider-Man grimaced, this was something that was sadly becoming an all too common occurrence, a problem with his superhero exploits. It tended to eat into his civilian identity and personal time, things like the arrangements he made with Sam, it was always a problem trying to manage things. He was just glad he remembered this time before it was too late. He quickly swung to the school, noting that there were already several students there, chatting excitedly as they were making their way towards the gym, all there for the lecture. With a grimace, Spidey at least took some solace in actually making it and quickly found his hidden stash and got changed into his regular clothes and resuming his civilian identity before slipping back down to the street level and making his way to the school, running as he was already late. He saw Sam up ahead, already chatting with Laurel, the two of them were smiling casually and talking easily, although Sam did get a concerned look on his face as he glanced at his watch, that left Jamie feeling guilty.
Taking a deep breath, Jamie hurried to reach them.
"Sam, Laurel, guys…" He said as he stopped before them. "God, I'm so sorry I'm late."
They both turned to him, smiling as Laurel shook her head.
"It's alright, you're not that late, only about five minutes, right?"
Sam nodded. "Yeah, it's fine. You made it, that's the main thing."
He gave Jamie a warm smile, which made Jamie feel strange, warm inside, with a strange stirring in his stomach, but he quickly tried to compose himself and returned the smile.
"Thanks guys, well, yeah, I made it. So um...oh yeah Sam, don't you have a dance show coming up?" Jamie asked as he recalled Sam telling him about it.
Sam grinned, glad that Jamie remembered, he was also feeling that strange combinations of feelings but like Jamie was not showing it outwardly. This was another thing that Sam didn't hide about himself which made people at school have their varying reactions towards him, and Jamie once again sided with Sam and supported him about it. But it was well known that Sam was an up and coming professional dancer and had been learning from a young age.
"Yeah, that's right, a few months from now, I've been getting as much practice in as I can, you can never be too prepared." Sam replied.
Laurel laughed softly. "That's very true, you sure are dedicated, huh?"
Sam smiled. "Um, yeah. Thanks...oh, it's almost time, we better get inside."
The others nodded all three wishing they could in fact keep talking but wanting to instead attend the lecture and get good seats and so they hurried inside.
Seated inside with their classmates, Jamie, Sam and Laurel were pleased to have got a trio of good seats with the best view of the podium that had been set up. Jamie finding himself in the middle of the trio, his two best friends on either side of him. They watched as the Professor himself stood at the podium now. Miles Warren was a genius in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, and certainly had some well-known views on the possibility of human cloning. He was a tall yet thin man with short grey hair and a grey moustache, black eyes and fair skin. He had a friendly smile and an easy approachable demeanour. Many who studied at ESU and had him as a professor all said the same thing, he was a kind and helpful professor always willing to help the students who needed it.
"Thank you all for coming, and may I say what a great honour it is to be received here by such eager people with eager minds." Professor Warren greeted them all as he began his lecture.
The trio weren't the only ones who were already enjoying themselves, looking forward to the lecture that was just beginning. There was another girl seated nearby who knew them well enough and shared a smile as she caught their eye. Her name was Natalie Anderson, a tall girl with long wavy blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin, a fit build and long legs, a dancer's build actually and that was how she knew them, also knowing Sam, with the two of them being part of the same dance group. She was also the daughter of the current police captain and right now, she was unaware of a strange look that passed over Professor Warren's face as he took notice of her, but it was just a flicker before he was back to his normal self and beginning the lecture proper.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
