When he first witnessed her tears at Georgetown, he told her that he'd never be a source of her tears.
That turned out to be a lie.
He witnessed her tears two more times.
(That he actually saw.)
When she came into his office and said that it was too much and said that she'd miss him.
When he publicly humiliated her in front of all Lockhart/Gardner and she said that her leaving with Cary wasn't meant personally. When he saw the tears, he felt awful.
"I will never be the source of your tears ever again." He says.
