Johan had become aware of the reputation his actions had garnered over time. But he'd never quite had to deal with quite so much at once.

''We watched the tournament a few months ago, that way you pulled off the win was impressive! I thought the fact that you just donated the money was even better!'' A girl exclaimed as she shook his hand.

''Thanks…'' That had just been a spur of the moment thing a long time ago so hearing this was a surprise ''…I'm glad you liked it.''

And that had just been one of the people who'd stopped for a chat after class ended…

Had he really made such an impact on people to begin with? A lot still talked like he was nothing but a person riding on his family's coattails, just the kind of thing he wanted to avoid doing.

Jaden's voice reached his ears a short while later ''What was that about not being a star again?''

''Chazz participated in a bunch of those events too, right? How come he didn't get this kind of reception?'' Syrus wondered.

''Johan's just too nice.'' The boy in question waved dismissively.

Bastion decided to try elaborating ''Chazz has been coming off as unapproachable, if you recall. I would gather its simply part of who he is so people likely learned to give him his space.''

Syrus nodded in understanding, the former giving Johan his attention ''Your humility is admirable, by the way.''

He half-smiled ''I just set out to make my own way and try to figure out my path. The tournaments were a way to challenge myself, staying behind my family's name wouldn't sit right with me. When I saw an opportunity to help, I figured I could try. It's not about recognition, it just feels good to know I can make a difference out there, no matter how small.''

''You're really something else, Johan!'' Jaden exclaimed.

Similarly impressed, Syrus was really reconsidering his impression about the boy ''I think you're really brave, that's…there's no way it's as easy as you're making it sound.''

''Mm, but it's something I've decided to see through to the end. It was a chance for me to learn and grow too. I've got a long way to go but it all gave me experience I wouldn't have had anywhere else.''

The resolve in these words left the three in awe, Chazz's lips quirking as he listened. Truth be told, he'd taken it all as lip service at first. However, his encounters with the boy left him slowly doubting that…then years ago…

Chazz was getting more and more annoyed.

What could've been a good, well-earned victory was marred by the fact that one of the people he'd wanted to face just vanished out of the blue. Johan had seemed genuinely interested in facing him again earlier, was he just placating him?

No, the boy wasn't anywhere near that good of a liar. Something must have happened…

It was as he'd been about to leave the tournament hall that he overhead some people talking to a couple of the journalists. What he could pick up was quite interesting.

''Hey!'' They looked at him with a start.

''Mr. Princeton! Congratulations on winning once again…''

''Never mind that!'' The boy wasn't in the mood for platitudes. ''What were you saying just now? Someone almost ruined the tournament?''

''You haven't heard? There was an incident earlier. One of the pros pushed another competitor down the stairs after some argument. He wasn't counting on the security cameras catching him. The police were called by the hospital, thank goodness we have one on this street. Another duelist discovered the poor guy and took him over in time.''

Wait, did that mean…?

''Yeah, that's why the kid disappeared before the second round could even get under way, right?'' One of the reporters confirmed his suspicion. ''What was his name? I never got it…''

''Johan Andersen, genius! That new kid who's been making his name on the dueling scene. Are you always this bad at listening?'' Another reporter huffed. ''Mr. Princeton, I heard you two actually…''

The words died in her throat as she realized Chazz wasn't even there anymore.

What spurred him to head to the hospital, Chazz had no idea. But he did know he didn't want to leave things like this.

Immediately finding the receptionist, he approached ''Did you see a kid around my height, kind of messy blue hair?''

''Oh, yes! Mr. Andersen was talking to the police a few minutes ago. I think they were in that hall over there.'' She indicated the one to their far left ''Are you his friend? I hope you can help-the poor thing seemed really disturbed. Not that I blame him, how can anyone do such a thing…?''

Frankly, Chazz was inclined to agree. Hey, he'd admit to being a jerk but he had standards. He hoped the bastard got what he deserved.

Luckily, he soon spotted Johan's driver as he headed over to join the boy with a drink which he gave to the boy as he sat. ''You've done wonderfully, young master. The nurses were just telling me that you likely saved that poor man's life.''

''Really…?'' His voice was barely discernible, his gaze not leaving the ground. ''I just heard something strange and when…when I got there…he was…'' He shook his head vigorously ''…I don't get it, Sven, how can anybody even think that was okay…? To just leave like this too…''

The man smiled sadly, patting his back ''I wish I had an answer but it's something we're likely not meant to understand, and I consider us all the more fortunate for it. We're certainly better off not understanding such people.''

Johan could see Jack's hand on his shoulder, sparing the knight a grateful look. He could still feel his heart pounding at the sight of that terrible discovery, seeing the man try and fail to move, struggling to speak or even breathe. The boy had been so thrown he didn't move, it was Jack who snapped him to his senses, reminding him that there was a way he could help. And he couldn't thank his old friend enough for it.

Sure, the main reason he decided to take part in those duels was a way to step out and learn about the world. The fourteen-year-old just never thought he'd come across something like this…

Both looked up at the sound of footsteps, finding one of the doctors and a policeman approaching. The first's expression was warm as she met Johan's gaze ''I thought you should hear this first; Mr. Cairdelly is going to be all right. A few broken bones but nothing some rest and recuperation won't fix.''

The three adults smiled as Johan seemed to slump with relief ''Thank goodness…''

''I remember what you said before but you've got nothing to be sorry for, son. You did great.'' The policeman assured gently ''We got the rotten bastard behind bars, turns out he was actually on probation and I have no idea what those idiot organizers were thinking letting him participate at all.''

Frankly, Chazz thought that was a good point. Next time he'd make sure to veto any organizations behind the tournaments…

''But I'm getting off topic. We wanted to thank you, actually.'' The man carried on ''If the story gets out and given the reporters present, I think it's a question of when, really-people will want to know who stepped in. Who the hero of the hour was…''

''No.''

They looked at Johan with a start, the boy's gaze hardening ''I'm no hero. No one with a sense of decency could just walk away. That's practically benefiting from his suffering and I won't ever do that.''

The former tried to argue ''But that's not…are you sure…? You deserve some recognition for this.''

Johan shook his head ''Please, just leave it. He'll be okay, that's enough for me.''

Sven's smile grew while the doctor's gaze softened, Chazz looking on with newfound respect. It was easy to picture anyone simply accepting the deal with pride and taking the glory, but much harder to see this choice being made. Yet Johan never showed even an ounce of hesitation, making it clear he wouldn't have this any other way.

Jack simply wore a gentle smile, his pride in his old friend burning bright.

''I think the least we can do is respect his wishes, right?'' The doctor prompted, her companion chuckling.

''That's for sure.'' Shaking his head, the policeman grinned ''But remember this, at the end of the day, you were the one who made all the difference.''

With that, the two left. Johan leaning against the wall. Sven stood ''I'll get the car, young master. Safe to say, a trip home is very much in order now.''

Murmuring in agreement, Johan let his eyes close for a few moments. Weariness settling in with the adrenaline and panic finally leaving. Everything had been so hectic that he'd barely had a moment to breathe and only now did he realize how drained he really was.

It was Jack who registered that they weren't alone, his surprise drawing Johan's attention to ''Chazz…?''

The boy hadn't thought he'd be caught in the midst of his retreat , sighing as he turned around. The air was thick with unspoken thoughts, Chazz finally deciding he didn't want to put up with the silence anymore. ''…I was in half a mood to chew you out for disappearing like that before I heard about well…this.''

''…then you saw…?''

Nodding, Chazz exhaled ''…You really are different, aren't you? Not many would've done this.''

Johan gave a tired smile ''I couldn't just leave…it's really nothing special.''

The boy certainly disagreed and he knew the others felt the same. People who went to such extents out of kindness and altruism were admirable. ''…Not everyone and definitely not for a complete stranger…you did great.''

''Thanks…I…I should go…'' He was frankly quite tired at this point and he really needed some space to process everything.

Nodding, Chazz spotted Sven coming back ''…Look, if you want to talk…''

The boy gave him a small smile, appreciating the offer as he joined Sven ''I think your parents will have quite a lot to say about this.''

''…I didn't even think of that…''

''It's quite all right, I've brought them up to speed…''

Chazz heard their voices trail off, deciding it was time he head off as well. One thing was for sure, the day certainly had an impact on the two of them.

That truly marked the beginnings of the changes that turned his life upside down. Johan became the first true friend he'd had in quite a long time, if ever. Then he'd gotten to meet his family. And Chazz felt he was a better person for it.

Things went by with little event, ending with the class of one Lyman Banner, the head of Slifer Red. Which seemed to get canceled at the last minute but no one was quite sure why.

As the students began to leave, Johan could hear murmurs about the teachers. Most seemed to focus on Crowler and Banner. Which had him wondering…

''…Who's the head of Ra Yellow?''

''You know, I'm not all that sure.'' Chazz realized with mild surprise. ''I've never even heard of the guy before. Weird…''

Both were left to mull that for a few moments, unsure of what to think. Shaking himself, Johan turned to leave ''Well, I still want to take a look around so I guess I'll see you back in the dorm?''

''Sure. Any chance you won't get lost this time?''

Johan smiled as Ruby appeared outside ''I've got that figured out.''

Chazz quirked a brow, turning as he heard Jaden calling out to his friend ''Aw, man-I wanted to ask him to duel…''

''Don't you have more important stuff to do, slacker? Like the homework which must be piling up for you by now.''

''No big deal. It can wait!''

''So can the duel.''

Jaden made a face, unable to refute that ''Oh hey, Chazz, how about you and I…?''

''My deck's in my room and I'm not going all the way back just because you won't learn patience.''

''Aw, man…''

Ruby sprang into some bushes and poked her head out, waving her tail towards Johan with a grin. The boy caught up with her and she clambered up his shoulder. Glad to see one of his new friends having so much fun, this did remind Johan of something he hadn't gotten around to bringing up yet.

''Say, Ruby?'' She blinked at him ''I've gotten to know the spirits I introduced you guys to pretty well but with everything that happened, there wasn't really much time for us to really talk. I was thinking it'd be nice if I could get to know you all.''

The little minx's eyes shone as she gave a happy cry. Her joy was infectious and he couldn't help smiling back ''Well, good to know it's got your seal of approval.''

'Not only hers.'

A white Pegasus with yellow wings encrusted with sapphires as well as a sapphire horn appeared in front of the pair. This was Sapphire Pegasus, another spirit much like Ruby belonging to the Crystal Beast clan.

The Crystal Beasts had been fashioned into a deck and given to Johan by none other than the founder of duel monsters, Maximillion Pegasus. It had only been a short while since their encounter and the spirits knew fully well that Johan had quite a lot on his plate even then.

'Don't blame yourself, you've already dealt with enough. It's been so hard for you ever since that incident…' Both spirits shared troubled looks as Johan's gaze lowered in acknowledgement '…but the fact that you called us friends so soon, that you treated us with such kindness from the beginning. We couldn't be happier to have you as our duelist.'

The boy was relieved to hear it ''I'd still like to spend time with you guys anyway. I know you're basically the one in charge and Ruby mentioned something about you playing mediator a lot. What was it like back when you were all together?''

Sapphire's gaze warmed and he began to explain…

Syrus watched as Jaden finished up a duel, once again coming out on top. They'd just been found by a Ra student who believed Jaden was simply quite lucky, only to learn how wrong he was the hard way.

''Jeez, I guess he really wasn't a goofball in the end, huh…?'' The boy conceded.

''Hey, you know I can hear you, right?'' Jaden huffed.

''Well, you literally slept through two classes today and last week you got tons of detention because you kept flubbing the homework. Can you blame me?''

Well, when he put it like that…

Syrus gave his friend a look ''You walked right into that one, Jay.''

''Oh, thanks!'' Jaden mock glared at the pair ''Anyway, if you want to duel again, I'm always ready.''

''Yeah maybe, I'll probably tune up my deck first. See ya!'' The boy waved, walking away.

''Hey, Sy? You know how we saw those seniors back there talking about their plans for graduation? What do you think Chumley's going to do?''

The short Slifer paused ''…You know, that's actually a good question…I'm not even sure where Chumley stands at this point. He barely even leaves his room, let alone goes to class…''

''Yeah, and it sucks! He could be having lots of fun but he never even tries.'' Jaden crossed his arms.

''You know not everyone thinks the same way you do, right? Chumley came here because his dad wanted him to be a duelist but…I don't know if he really wants to be one.''

''Wait, that's crazy! What else do people who come here do?'' Jaden appeared so baffled that Syrus couldn't help giving him a long look.

''Loads of things! There's that game creating class, remember? And the card designing classes here are really good, plus there's loads of history to learn. Plus, I heard the people who do great here can even go to universities abroad and that gives loads of opportunities. There's also chances to make good impressions and connections that could help you in the future.''

''Oh, really? Wow…'' Jaden had just been so focused on the dueling that he'd never even given any of the academy's other aspects much thought. ''…think he'd tell us about his goals if we try talking him through it now?''

''We can try but he's been pretty good about dodging this subject so far…''

Johan had followed his new friends when they picked up on something rather strange that they wished to investigate. This led to them discovering the remains of a building which must have been from many, many years ago, surrounded some pillars.

Sapphire was looking around the ruins with increasing curiosity 'I never thought I'd see anything like this in the human realm. What is this place?' Ruby jumped to his back with a question to which he nodded 'It is much bigger than it seems, I can't imagine what all this was needed-Johan?'

The boy started and looked back at them; Sapphire tilted his head 'Something wrong? You were really spacing out there.''

''Ah, I just felt…I didn't really get what brought your attention to this place before now…I get this sense that there's something special here and at the same time not…I don't know how to explain it…''

But the spirit looked impressed 'That's what we were talking about, actually. You're reacting to the energies here; they are quite strong. Jack told us a bit about the spirits you've encountered over the years, the bond you've built with them helped enhance your spiritual potential to a degree that lets you notice things other humans would miss. Especially now that you're connected to us.'

Wondering what he meant by that, Johan saw what appeared to be a spirit flying up ahead ''Well, since you're that interested, you could always ask around. Didn't you mention sensing other spirits here, Sapphire?''

'Right, it can wait though. Now where should we go from here?'

Chazz turned his duel disk off, shooting his opponent a glare. The senior Obelisk flinched, not even meeting his gaze as he picked himself up and took off. He'd just been relaxing in the dorm when the idiot decided to show his stuff, apparently having some sort of issue which he wanted to take out on Chazz. Only later did he find out that the boy just had some beef against the Princeton Group.

If anyone knew what THAT was like, it'd be him.

For all his tough talk, the boy barely even lasted five turns. And he was a senior. Somehow bringing those idiots' egos down to size never got old. To think he could've been as bad at them as some point-another reason to thank Johan and his family.

That train of thought brought back a certain incident to mind, Chazz's fist clenching as the old anger returned. Why did something like that have to happen to some of the best people he'd ever known?

While he was certainly glad to see Johan (not that he'd ever say it, of course) his concerns remained. Because he was very well aware that the boy was not okay and he didn't doubt that Johan himself knew it. But try as he might, Chazz just couldn't think of anyway he could help. Not after that…

As he re-entered the dorm, his eyes traveled to the direction where he knew Johan's room was before he turned on his heel and kept walking away.

Johan spread his cards out on the bed, having finished tuning his first deck. His eyes roamed the pieces that comprised his new deck, thinking that it was no wonder the crystal beasts garnered so much attention. The fact that they'd chosen him was something he still had a bit of trouble believing.

Even now, the variety and the ability of the cards never ceased to impress him. The extra deck monsters too, fusion, xyz and synchro, the latter two methods being recent additions to the game. They were inspired by a famous designer under Pegasus' employ, the man's skill as both a duelist and designer earning him quite the reputation and the first synchro and xyz cards were actually created by him. But he died to an illness a few years ago, yet Pegasus, choosing to immortalize the work of a good friend and employee, had expanded their use further and further.

Having just tuning up the deck, Johan put the cards away. He definitely wanted to try them all out in a duel but this would do for now.

'You sure work hard, huh?' A golden-brown puppy with a bright citrine crystal on his forehead and chest appeared next to him. This was Crystal Beast Citrine Canine. 'So, duelists have to think about stuff like this too? That's a lot to handle.'

''There's plenty to consider when making a deck. Some of your effects do go well together but there's still outliers, and we always have to keep in mind how the spell and traps would mesh too. It wouldn't be any good if the deck wasn't balanced, Citrine.''

'I hear-hey, I told you, my friends call me Citri!' The canine jumped at Johan, making a face as he went through the boy '…You know where I was going with this.'

Smiling, Johan turned as a giggle reached his ears, a young rabbit spirit with a jade on her chest, tail and knee appeared. This was Crystal Beast Jade Rabbit 'Hi, Johan! Still a goofball, huh, Citri?'

'Like you're one to talk! How many times have you screwed up way worse than I ever did?'

'Key difference, I can at least admit it!'

'So can I!'

'Reallly?' The word was dragged out meaningfully as the rabbit smirked.

'Now, now that's enough.' An owl spirit appeared between them, purple fluorite crystals studded his grey feathered wings and also adorned his horns. His eyes sharp yet brimming with wisdom, he was Crystal Beast Fluorite Owl 'Heavens know we've heard enough of such squabbles. Jade, haven't we talked about riling him up?'

'I was just having a bit of fun, Flo.' The rabbit pouted as Citri scowled at him 'Don't be such a stuffed shirt.'

Rolling his eyes, the avian looked at Johan 'Pay them no heed, this behavior isn't too uncommon amongst us, I'm afraid.'

The amused boy leaned back ''Well, I've never heard of a group of friends or family without their squabbles so we're not all that different there.''

'See, he gets it!' Jade beamed, hopping to his knee 'You know, Citri used to play some really dumb pranks on us too so some of us agreed we can get our payback in different ways.'

''Like what?''

She was all too happy to answer 'We were just playing in the cove-that's part of our old realm-' Jade amended, noticing his curiosity '-and a couple of our friends were practicing their powers deep inside. Citri sees them and he gets the idea to spook everyone since it was getting dark. Between the reflections from the crystals everywhere and the power from the magic…'

'They could cast quite the eerie looking figures.' Fluorite put in 'Citri thought it would be absolutely hilarious to test everyone's courage then.'

''And it worked?'' Johan clarified.

'Like a charm! Everyone just…' Citri faltered at the pointed looks from his fellow spirits '…hey, Labby helped too-ah, I meant…'

Watching Jade began to berate the canine for involving the aforementioned spirit, Johan and the owl watching them ''…I've been wondering for a while but Citri really has no filter, huh?''

'I'm afraid not.' Fluorite returned blandly.

Hearing the mention of the cove left the boy wondering what their home was like. But given what he knew about how they came to lose it, Johan felt it might be better not to ask, at least not now. After all, everyone had things they didn't want to talk about, that was something he was far too familiar with.

''So, leaving them to it, would you mind telling me another story, Fluorite? It sounds like you've had some interesting times.''

The owl's gaze softened 'Not at all, my friend. You may call me Flo, if you wish. Now, let's see…'

The following day, near the academy entrance…

''I knew I recognized that hair!''

Startled, Johan turned to find a grinning Ra Yellow boy approaching ''Emil!''

''Yo, looks like you made some entrance, superstar.'' The boy held up a hand which the latter tapped in a high-five.

''Don't remind me…''

Snickering, Emil shook his head ''Come on, you gotta show your fans some appreciation! If it were me…''

''If it were you, we'd never hear the end of it.''

The boy gave a mock-offended gasp ''You wound me, Sir! I'd never…'' He couldn't help snorting at Johan's long look ''…okay, that's fair.''

''Really sticking to your old ways, aren't you, mischief maestro?''

Emil ran a hand through his wild pale blond looks, blue eyes glimmering with familiar mischief ''Excuse you, I look for inventive ways to express myself. We might have just started here but I'll be making sure the teachers don't forget about my glory days for years to come. It's never boring that way.''

''Anyone who accuses you of being boring clearly hasn't met you.''

The boy beamed ''Then my plan's working! But seriously though, how are you holding up? I couldn't believe it when we heard…''

''I…well, I'm managing.'' Johan gave a small smile ''There's a lot I'm trying to figure out now but it has to do with why I came in the end.''

''Yeah? You do you, buddy. We got your back; you know that right?''

''Mm, thanks…''

The two encountered Bastion near class, his expression turning curious as he greeted them ''I had no idea you were friends, Emil.''

''We've known each other since prep school. I thought this guy was some uppity blue blood but boy I couldn't be more wrong!''

''Yes, I think a lot of people are left with that impression…''

Johan hadn't been sure what to expect when the next class mention history and card lore but this was fascinating.

The teacher, Miss Yelan, was not only one who knew her subject well, she clearly enjoyed it too. Her somewhat scruffy appearance did nothing to hide her sharp wit, her smile warm as she began regaling them with her chosen topic, the history of the Six Samurai.

''Everything started for this powerful clan with a single man's ambitions. The one now known as Supreme General Shien was nothing but a disgraced ronin who wandered many lands after failing the one he was supposed to protect…left with nothing but a broken sword and the clothes on his back, he could only travel and see where the fates led him…''

A lone warrior traversing many lands with nothing but the blade to his name, trying to pull his name from the mud. Determination to regain his lost honor fueling his every step…

''He had his fair share of struggles but he never gave up. He couldn't give up on the only thing keeping him going. Because a stain on his pride as a warrior hurt more than any wound.'' The retelling continued ''Then he came across several remarkable figures in their own right, the righteous swordsman with his lustrous blade determined to sharpen his skills and protect those he cares for. Zanji, who would become his second in command after three battles where Shien trounced him. The incredible archer who was said to never miss a shot and his friend, swift and graceful as the wind, Yaichi and Nisashi. They pledged their loyalty to Shien after he saved their lives from the deadly assassin of the shadows, Irou…''

Johan could practically see it playing before his eyes. The powerful Shien and the skilled Zanji clashing their blades, a stealthy assassin attempting to take down the two samurai in blue and green. All the warriors of different walks coming together and forging their path forward…

He remained unaware of Jack watching with clear amusement, knowing very well that his old friend was imagining this tale playing before them. It was good to see him happy, Sapphire had been right. Things had been rough on him recently, yet another reason why Jack wasn't sure coming here was a good idea but if it would help Johan, he had no complaints.

''Irou was an enemy?'' One of the Ras winced, the reaction merely being one out of surprise ''Sorry, Professor.''

''It's quite all right.'' If anything, she seemed pleased at the clear interest she was gathering ''But yes, he was. You see…''

Yelan's clear enthusiasm and care for her subject likely helped too. Listening to her talk about how Zanji defeated Irou in outrage over his cowardly tactics, it was only the assassin's horse that saved his life, refusing to abandon his master. Even attacking Zanji to make him back off, seeing this inspired Shien, telling Irou to join them.

By now, a good amount of the class was animated, a testament to her skill as an orator. One student raised her hand, Yelan nodding to her ''The six samurai had this kind of lore? That's nuts! Where do the other cards come in then? Like the legendary versions?''

''That'll be included in the next class. Besides, on the subject of our samurai-aren't you forgetting some?''

''Oh, yeah! It's Yariza and Kamon left, right? And I guess the Grandmaster and that Chancellor too…''

''Right, but before we get into that-what do you make of everything so far?'' Yelan's smile grew as another student raised his hand, nodding to him.

''It's really interesting! I heard cards have all sorts of lore but I didn't know it could be like this.''

''You just have to know where to look. There's all sorts of stories out there when you least expect it, a lesson in each one. Some of the stories I have will make your heads spin. Now, let's continue…''

Bastion shot Jaden an exasperated glance ''You slept through class this time as well?''

''Nah, gimme some credit-'' The boy took a bite out of his rice ball. ''-it's no big deal. The duels are where it's really at.''

Emil quirked a brow ''You really have a one-track mind, don't you? Sure, the dueling's important but that's not all there is to the school. Besides, won't you get in trouble with your parents?''

''It looks like there's a lot of exciting things to do here, actually.'' Johan thought back to what he read about the academy ''If you just focus on one aspect, you'll be missing out. Besides, that class was great.''

''You liked that stuff?'' Jaden demanded incredulously.

''It was really interesting! Hearing what the lore was really about, thinking of how it came to be. Picturing it just happening like that made the whole thing really fun.''

Emil snorted ''Figures, you really have the knack to make the most boring stuff cool.''

''Well, I'm glad to hear my lecture was cool, Mr. Trevanni.'' Wincing, he and Jaden turned to find a smirking Yelan watching. ''Don't worry, I had a similar reaction when my grandpa told me the story years ago. Of course, he loved every single detail so it was honestly more than a little exasperating, but I guess growing up with a history nut can rub off on you. That's quite a way to look at it, Mr. Andersen. I'd like to pick your brains about that but I do need to be going to my next class, so I suppose I'll see you boys tomorrow. Do try not to fall asleep, could you?''

Emil let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, that went much better than expected. ''She's cool people.''

''Yes, it seems she does enjoy teaching and she wants to spread that joy. That's certainly admirable.'' Bastion smiled. ''By the way, would any of you like to go check out the workshop?''

Emil perked up ''Oh, yeah-I forgot there was one today! Come on, Johan, it'll be fun!''

''Ah, sure…?''

A Ra student looked troubled ''Hey, Emil, I don't know about this…''

''Oh, ease up, it's fine!'' The boy waved dismissively, watching Johan look around the room in wonder. He was so engrossed that he completely missed the gazes coming his way.

A number of the students were genuinely confused, some having recognized him, they had certainly not expected Johan to be so fascinated by their projects. And yet here they were…

There were a number of figures of duel monsters. From simple ones like Watapon to much more complex monsters like Gilford the Lightning. A few drawings of what he recognized as field spells, a large half-rolled up poster with the Last Warrior from Another Planet fighting alien monsters among a number of other creations.

Bastion decided to help things along ''Fascinating, wouldn't you say, Johan?''

''Yeah! I know you both said there's a lot going on but I never expected all this. It's amazing…'' Johan remained unaware of the attention he was gathering as a certain set of baubles caught his eye ''…are those…?''

A dark haired Slifer girl appeared sheepish ''…yeah, a bunch of fashion stuff based on duel monsters. It was something we'd been working on for a while but…well, I figured it'd be fine to try again.''

''Nice work, how come we've never seen this before? You hang around here a lot.'' Emil noted with interest.

''It's…ah…a long story.''

Bastion was examining the accessories ''I recognize the inspiration for some of these but what about this one?''

The Slifer followed his gaze to a bracelet with some gold lining as well as orange and green spheres. There were also a few other accessories with a similar theme ''Oh, that one was just something I wanted to try but it's not really turned out right…''

''How come? That's based on the Odd Eyes archetype, right?'' Johan tilted his head.

''Finally, someone gets it!'' The girl's relief was audible. ''I can't even count how many times I had to explain-I just thought, there's enough flashy stuff to go around, why not try to make something different? But she just kept…'' Shaking her head, she smiled ''…never mind. Thanks, I wasn't sure it was even worth bringing out again.''

''Are you for real? This stuff slays!'' The girl looked at Emil in surprise, which extended to the others as they put in their own agreement.

''It really does look great.''

''If you ever consider marketing your projects, I believe you'll find many customers.'' Bastion added.

She couldn't help beaming ''Thanks, you guys! Oh, I'm Ciel. Of course, I know who you three are. Mr. top scorer, the new duel whiz who's been taking names on the circuit and let's not forget captain chaos over here!''

Johan gave Emil a look ''…You've clearly been busy.''

''Well, you know, just…'' He shrugged ''…for the record, if any of my tricks caught you, my bad.''

But she just laughed ''No worries, I just really wasn't expecting to see someone like you…''

Syrus' eye twitched ''Of course he's late, typical…''

Jaden had found them earlier, quickly asking Johan for a duel. It had been sometime since he and Johan arrived, hastened by the boy's enthusiasm.

''Seems like you go way back.'' Johan remarked.

''Nah, I met him back at the entrance exam. He was running super late even then-you'd think someone who loves dueling so much would be the first to show up, right? But nope, he's never on time.''

That reminded him of something ''Actually, didn't you mention something about dueling when we met? About how some Obelisks tried to get you in trouble?''

''Oh, yeah…well, a lot of people thought Jay beat Crowler on pure luck. Especially since he's in Slifer, they just take one look at his jacket and decide that was that. We were just checking out the campus when we found the duel field and then those two snobby obelisks come out of nowhere and decide to make us duel. They said Jaden was nothing but a hack and they wanted to prove it, but Professor Banner showed up and he reminded us all we had to get to the welcome dinner.'' A grimace ''And they wouldn't let it go, they sent a message to Jaden telling us to come to the duel arena after dinner so they can finish what they started. Of course, Jay never turns down a duel…''

That was when Johan noticed the problem ''Hold on, but if you went to the arena that late…?''

''Yup, they were looking to get us expelled.'' The Slifer nodded ''Of course we didn't know about the rule back then. Turns out those guys have been causing trouble for a while so Chazz was on to them, Jaden beat one and the other still wanted to fight when Chazz shows up, calling them cowards for stooping to this. It looks like they've known each other since prep school because Torimaki started going on about how they just wanted to prove themselves and 'get rid of the trash'…''

''So Torimaki and Raizou are at it again?''

The clear exasperation in his tone told Syrus plenty ''…Were they were like this in prep school too?''

''Yeah, they were following Chazz around a lot when we met. Chazz was different back then, he was…well, I wouldn't say arrogant since he can back his talk up.'' Johan amended ''But he was a real snob, they were always following him around, since we all knew he was a strong duelist. He made it clear that he got sick of their attitude and they never liked that, so they decided to prove that they were better than him.''

The boy immediately wondered how that made any sense ''Oh, so that's why Chazz mentioned bringing their egos down to size again…''

''He changed and they either don't want to like it or just won't see it. That's all.''

''Good for-'' The words died in his mouth as he noticed Chazz. ''-oh, uh…''

He quirked a brow ''You're right, it is good for me. I just realized I was sick of pathetic hangers on who can't do anything by themselves…'' His eyes traveled behind them ''…get a load of that.''

'That' being the whirlwind of energy that was Jaden arrived. He skidded to a stop, grinning even as he panted.

''…You said he was excited but you left out the human tornado part.''

''I was trying not to think about it.''

Syrus and Johan watched Jaden arrive with exasperation and amusement, the latter clearly biting back a smile as he waved at them before slotting his cards in his duel disk.

''Sorry I'm late! I had to get the deck ready…''

''Why don't you tell it how it really is, slacker?'' Chazz cut in, smirking. ''Like how you almost tumbled from the stairs because you were in such a rush so you had to gather the cards. Classic.''

''Why am I not surprised?'' Syrus mumbled, Johan chuckling as Jaden grinned sheepishly.

''Anyway, you ready, Johan?''

''As I'll ever be. Just try not to blow us away, could you?''

Syrus glanced at Chazz as the boys prepared themselves. ''So, how'd you get here before Jay if he was running that fast?''

''Search me. I'm just chalking it up to him being a magnet for trouble.''

Considering all the brunet got up to in their scant weeks here, Syrus only had one reply ''That's fair.''

''I'll start us off.'' Johan grabbed a card ''First I cast Reinforcement of the army, so I can add a warrior monster to my hand. Then I summon Absolute Crusader.'' A warrior clad in white and gold armor appeared, brandishing a matching sword. (ATK: 1800/ DEF: 1100) ''I set one card and end my turn.''

''Here we go!'' Jaden grinned ''Sweet, I play Polymerization and fuse Elemental Heroes Avian and Bustrinatrix in my hand to get my favorite, Elemental Hero Flame Wingman!''

Syrus perked up at the sight of the red and green hero (ATK: 2100/ DEF: 1200) ''All right, that's a good start!''

''Yeah, you'd think so, huh?''

Blinking, the boy looked at Chazz but Johan's next words provided an explanation ''Sorry to say he won't be here for long. Crusader's effect activates, by sacrificing him, one special summoned level 5 or higher monster is destroyed.''

''What?!''

Crusader's frame shone as he raised his blade, Flame Wingman was blasted by a hail of light blasts that destroyed him as the former faded into the graveyard.

''Wait, just like that?'' Syrus couldn't help staring.

Jaden smirked ''Not bad but since I haven't normal summoned yet, I'll be calling on Elemental Hero Heat!'' (ATK: 1600-1800/ DEF: 1200) A red and orange human-like figure emerged in a burst of fire. ''And attack!''

Heat charged but Johan was ready ''Compulsory Evacuation Device activates, so he's going straight back where he came from!''

Jaden's eyes widened as the revealed trap shone, Heat soon vanishing. Glancing at the card in his hand, he looked back at Johan ''You planned this…?''

''You didn't think I'd make this easy, right?''

''Did he actually know…?'' Syrus blinked.

''The slacker's been famous since he beat Crowler and considering all what happened since the year started, his rep only grew. Johan more than likely known he uses Elemental Heroes. Fusion monsters are their strongest point.'' Chazz mentally rolled his eyes at their bafflement. If they thought this duel would be easy, they were in for a nasty surprise.

The Obelisk's words made a lot of sense to Syrus. With his track record and impressive wins, it was no wonder that Jaden was this famous now. Truly, it was an example of how knowledge of an archetype can aid in a duel.

''I summon Wind Up Knight.'' A toy-like knight in silver and gold emerged (A: 1800/ D: 1200). Jaden held up his blade instinctively as it attacked on command, his life points taking a good hit.

(Jaden: 4000-2200: 1800)

With his new friend declaring the end of his turn, Jaden made his move ''I activate Fusion Deployment and get Sparkman along with a second Polymerization from my deck. And I fuse him and the Elemental Hero Clayman in my hand to create, Elemental Hero Thunder Giant!''

Syrus perked up at the sight of the familiar hero in yellow and purple, sparks around his body (A: 2400/D: 1600) ''All right, that's better!''

''And now I summon Heat again!'' A red and orange human-like figure emerged in a burst of fire. (ATK: 1600-2000/ DEF: 1200) ''Thunder Giant's effect activates; he can destroy any monster on the field with attack equal or lower to his!''

The hero conjured a wave of power that surged at Wind Up Knight…

''Then I use Shrink.'' Johan held up the quick play spell, taking them by surprise. They didn't see the point of that since it wasn't an attack, unless he hoped to protect his points…''And the target's Thunder Giant!''

A white aura surrounded the named monster, then they noticed that the power he'd mustered earlier was gone.

Chazz chuckled, drawing the slifers' attention. Count on Johan to pull off such a creative maneuver. ''Thunder Giant's effect depends on attack points, remember? And Shrink makes him weaker than Wind Up Knight, so that's a done deal.''

''You can do that?'' Syrus stared.

Jaden shook off his own surprise, grinning ''Awesome move! In that case, I'll attack with Heat!''

''Wind Up Knight has a pretty neat effect of his own, he can negate your attack.'' Johan revealed, the knight leveling his sword. It created a barrier that fended Heat's flames off.

''All right then, I'll just this card and end my turn.''

''Which starts mine…'' Johan drew ''…I cast Warrior's Bond, letting me draw two cards since there's a warrior on the field. And now Double Summon lets me bring out Cameraclops and Rose, Warrior of Revenge out on the field.'' A red headed woman jumped out onto the field (A: 1600/D: 800). The other monster was a bit on the strange side, it appeared human but with what seemed to a camera for a head (A: 1400/ D: 1500) ''And now I attack Thunder Giant with Cameraclops.''

Syrus gawked; Jaden couldn't really blame him but he figured it had to do with the monster's effect. But while he could stop the attack, he'd rather wait for when his facedown card was more necessary.

Thus, all three were very surprised when Thunder Giant was destroyed in a second, Cameraclops remaining on the field and Johan never losing a point. Jaden couldn't help it, he had to ask ''What kind of effect was that?''

''Cameraclops can skip the battle and destroy a monster when he attacks so long as the monster's attack is higher than his own defense points.''

''Nice…'' Chazz nodded; the card looked ridiculous but that was a useful ability.

Johan had almost attacked with Wind Up Knight before he got a better idea '' I play Gold Sarcophagus so it banishes a card for two turns. And now since I have level four monsters on the field, I can build the Overlay Network. I use Cameraclops and Wind Up Knight…'' Both monsters turned into beams of light that flew into the swirling galaxy before them ''…and end my turn by xyz summoning Comics Hero King Arthur!''

A powerful warrior in white and gold emerged, armor gleaming in the sun as he planted his sword in the ground (A: 2400/ D: 1200)

Syrus hadn't missed that the Obelisk could've caused more damage by sacrificing his Wind Up Knight for mutual destruction against Elemental Hero Heat and letting Rose attack but chose to do this instead. While it could've caused more damage, this measure likely would help more in the long run.

His friend perked up at the sight of his next card ''All right, I use Fusion Recovery to bring Avian back from the graveyard and fuse him with Heat to summon Elemental Hero Great Tornado!'' Winds swirled before him and a hero clad in green and gold flew into the air (A: 2800/ D: 2200) ''And when he's summoned, all your monsters' points are halved!''

Johan covered his eyes as the winds swept over his field, Rose and Arthur both falling to their knees (A: 800/ D: 200) (A: 1200/ D: 600). Once Jaden ordered an attack on Arthur, he used the card's effect to detach one overlay unit and protect him from battle destruction while damaging Jaden's points and giving Arthur 500 attack points.

(Jaden: 1700)

(Johan: 2400)

Jaden had yet another of his plans countered. Syrus wasn't sure any students besides Chazz, Zane and the Obelisk Queen Alexis Rhodes had given the hero duelist such a challenge. Johan's skill and experience certainly spoke for themselves.

Chazz had the idle thought that it was a good thing Johan had foregone the damage and summoned the xyz monster after all. It certainly seemed to pay off. But of course, he'd expect this level from his long-time friendly rival, anything less would've been insulting.

Jaden's excitement was still running strong. He knew Johan was good but this was way better than anything he expected.

Johan took his turn ''First off, I add Magnum Shield to Arthur…'' A gold and maroon shield appeared on the weakened monster's arm ''…and he gets his defense points added to his attack power.'' (A: 1800) ''And this is the Continuous Spell, the A. Forces. So, all my Warrior monsters gain 200 attack points for each one on the field.'' (A: 2200) (A: 1200) ''Then I switch Rose to defense mode and end my turn.''

''All right…'' The Slifer had his fusion monster attack King Arthur, not surprised when Johan used the effect again, allowing his monster to gain strength and evade destruction, with both of their life points taking a hit.

Jaden: 1200

Johan: 1800

With his opponent's turn down, Johan drew ''I activate the spell Blaze of Claoimh Solais, since I have three or more warriors in the graveyard and one on the field, I can activate two of its effects and destroy Great Tornado!''

The spell depicted a warrior running across a battle field with a sword coated with flames. Jaden started in alarm as a crimson sword appeared, flames surrounding it as it cut his hero down. ''And since it's a level 8 eight monster, I get to draw a card. Now Arthur attacks you.''

He'd messed up by not activating this before but not again. ''Hold it! I send Swift Scarecrow to the graveyard, so my life points are safe and sound!''

They watched as Johan wrapped his move up with a set card, Jaden drawing then ''I summon Elemental Hero Ice Edge and activate Hero Heart. This means Ice Edge gets to attack twice per turn, and now I use his effect, sending one card to the graveyard so he can attack directly.''

The little hero leaped into the air, Johan covering his eyes from the sudden storm of frost.

Johan: 1800-1600: 200

''And that means I get to destroy your set card!'' Said card erupted into pixels, Jaden finishing up then.

''Right then…'' Despite the loss of life points, the teal haired boy remained calm. ''…first, the card I banished with Gold Sarcophagus is added to my hand. Now I summon King's Knight.'' A blond warrior in gold and orange emerged ''And I send one card to the graveyard to play Joker's Straight.'' The spell depicted Jack along with King's and Queen's Knight all holding their swords together ''Which means I get to summon Queen's Knight from the deck and add Jack's Knight to my hand.''

Only Jaden saw the spirit in question appear behind his opponent, his eyes going wide. Did that mean…

It took Jack a moment to note that the hero duelist could in fact see him 'Interesting…'

Jade eyes traveled between the pair before a small noise of surprise left Johan, his lips quirking into a small smile. Jaden stared, so he was right?

The boy's changing expressions naturally didn't go unmissed by the others, Chazz giving Syrus a look, to which the boy shook his head with a shrug. He had no idea what was going on either.

Johan's battle phase was put to a halt by Jaden's Waboku, something that took Chazz by surprise ''Huh, so the slacker actually bothered with cards like these? Who knew…''

Syrus' first impulse was to defend his friend but…well, considering that he'd been the one to suggest that Jaden use them, Chazz wasn't exactly wrong.

The brunet drew three cards with into the void ''…Okay, here's Elemental Hero Stratos! And when he's summoned, I get to add another hero to my hand like Woodsman, then I O-Over Soul to get Sparkman and play Miracle Fusion to summon up Elemental Hero the Shining!''

''And now he attacks Queen's Knight…''

''Blaze of Claoimh Solais' effect activates! When it's in the graveyard, I can banish it and that means none of my monsters are destroyed for the turn.'' A veil of flame arose between the knights and hero, oddly enough surrounding Johan too. ''I can't set traps for three turns in return.''

Faced with little choice, Jaden set his last card to end his move. Johan then drew ''I sacrifice Arthur to summon Turret Warrior and he gets all of Arthur's points. Then I play Face Card Fusion and fuse my knights to summon Arcana Knight Joker!''

''All right, guys, let's do this. Turret Warrior, you first.'' Arcana Knight Joker moved to strike but then Jaden revealed one of his earlier set cards to protect Sparkman, Hero Barrier.

''Here's Parallel World Fusion, so by shuffling my banished monsters back to my deck, I get to use them for a fusion summon! So come on out, Elemental Hero Gaia!''

Johan knew what was coming, so he remained calm as Gaia halved Joker's power before attacking. (A: 22001900: 4100)

''In that case, I play Covering Fire. So, Joker gets Turret Warrior's attack added to his points.'' (A: 23004300: 6600)

Jaden glanced at his face down. Well, it was now or never ''I use the quick play spell, Cosmic Storm, so the damage I take is halved and yours is doubled and our monsters aren't destroyed!''

The latter's eyes widened as the area darkened around them, a myriad of celestial bodies shining brightly. Both were forced to look away from the strong flash…

Jaden: 0

Johan: 0

Draw!

''Whoa…'' Syrus managed, such an exciting duel ending up with a draw of all things left him at a loss for words.

''I guess he didn't have much of anything else to do he decided a draw was for the best.'' Chazz mused.

But Jaden's next words threw them for a loop ''Wait, wait, why are my life points zero? Sure, I knew they'd be low but not this low!''

Both he and Syrus fell over, Chazz groaning ''Don't you know basic math, Slacker?!''

Johan was fighting back his laughter at the absurdity of it ''I think someone was so into the duel, they forgot about the little detail that is their life points.''

''Hey, it's not that funny…'' But even as Jaden tried to complain, he could see the humorous side too ''…okay, I guess it is…think I'd get away with bringing a calculator to duels now?''

With the duel over and the tension ebbing away, the two had a good laugh about it all.

Jaden found himself looking eager to more duels ''That was awesome! You're even better that I thought, you didn't even use some of those cards back in the videos.''

''I change things up every once in a while. It's more fun.''

''I hear that! How much of that did you actually plan out, really?'' He couldn't keep his curiosity back any longer.

Johan half-smiled ''Less than you'd think. I've never really stuck to one plan through a duel and I just worked with what my deck gave me.''

The brunet looked like he was about to go on but then a rumbling sound reached their ears. Syrus choosing to put in his piece then ''I think the interrogation can wait, Jay. It's getting close to dinner time anyway so we should probably leave.

''Considering his track record, if he does push his luck, he'll be fortunate to make it back to the dorm by nightfall.'' Chazz added, both pointedly ignoring the boy's protest.

Having heard such sentiments before, Johan was left to wonder ''…So, when you mention track record…?''

''It is that bad. The slacker's just in denial.'' The other boy waved off. ''For all we know, he could find something like a lost duelist wandering out in the woods and decide to face him then...''

''Oh, you think? That sounds like fun!''

Rolling his eyes, the boy chose to avoid responding ''…so let's just be on our way.''

With that, the quartet bid each other farewell before heading their separate ways, preparing to rest after another lively day.

Cards:

Blaze of Claoimh Solais (Spell): If you have at least two warriors in the graveyard and one on the field, you can use one of the following effects:

-Destroy a monster and a spell or trap on your opponent's field, if it's a level 7 or higher monster, draw one card.

-Banish a warrior monster and damage your opponent's life points for half its attack points while you gain the other half

If this card is on your graveyard, you can banish it and your monsters can't be destroyed for the turn. You can't set traps for three turns.

Cosmic Storm: Take half damage for the turn while your opponents takes double, protect monsters from destruction for the turn.

Well, let's stop here.

As much as I like Yu-gi-oh, I just learned how hard it really is to plan a good duel. It's like my mind just kept blanking for a while. I had to revise this and try a few attempts to figure out a working idea, so I hope it's okay. I wasn't expecting the first duel to e this hard to write. Oh and I'm definitely ignoring the whole girls being in Obelisk Blue only thing because I don't see any reason to go with it.

Anyway, I want to see if I can show more of what life is really like at the academy. And that includes giving the teachers actual time in the spotlight and a chance to develop. It's just that the setting is fascinating and I had a bunch of ideas I want to try. I'll try not to add more characters than I can handle because I really do want to expand on the cast over the course of the story. By the way, I'm genuinely confused, I know Chumley failed to graduate but does that make him a first year still?

Johan's had this deck for years. But he only got the crystal beasts shortly before the story and given story related reasons which I will be talking about next chapter, he's never really had time to acclimate to them. He's like both Jaden and Bastion, dueling with both knowledge and heart and I know the show talks about them being similar but I feel they're also different in some ways. I like the GX cast so it honestly feels like such a waste and I want to see if I can change that.

Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
