Usagi

The first person I met was a beautiful but relatively inconspicuous girl with short black hair and an athletic build. She limped to the door of brother's room, but when she saw me, she stopped.

"Hi, come in," Ryohei invited her. She nodded and limped over to the other remaining chair. "Usagi, this is my brother Hajime. Hajime, this is my friend Usagi. We met here at the water dispenser, her room is just a few steps away. She was also one of those injured by the meteorite fall," He introduced us, making it sound as if they had just met in the hospital, but I remembered that it was the same name he had asked about a few days ago, just after waking up. But I didn't comment and just smiled.

"Nice to meet you," she said with a small bow in greeting. She placed her crutches next to the chair and then sat down. Ryohei could keep his eyes on her.

"So, how are you doing?" he asked her enthusiastically.

"I'm not sure if I'm fine. I still can't quite believe we survived. I'm having nightmares, I haven't slept much in the last few days," she admitted, but then added: "But the body is healing. The doctors told me they could send me home in fourteen days," which sounded much more positive. "And you?"

"I'm in a similar situation. I guess physical wounds always heal faster," my brother shrugged. "I heard from the nurses that some special psychiatric program is being prepared for the survivors."

Usagi looked as if her teeth hurt. "Are you planning to take advantage of this help?"

Ryohei frowned and shook his head. "No, of course not. It wouldn't help me at all." After those words, they both fell silent for a moment. I didn't like how they both so quickly dismissed the idea of seeking professional help to treat their trauma. However, they seemed to have a good reason for this, which they didn't want to say out loud. "I would like to focus on the future now rather than dissecting what was," my brother said, which was quite surprising. It sounded decisive and quite different from the attitude he had had towards everything up until now.

The girl nodded in agreement. "What are you planning?"

"Find a job and finish school. It would be good to finally stand on my shaky feet," Ryohei replied and I couldn't believe my ears. This was perhaps a miracle! I don't know if I can do it, I've already disappointed everyone once," He also immediately admitted his insecurity.

"It is okay, it's clear you're unsure, but effort counts," I tried to support him, but I wasn't very successful. However, Usagi was obviously much better.

She took his hand and smiled gently at him. "You didn't disappoint anyone. On the contrary, you saved us. It may seem like a difficult challenge, but how much harder can it be than what we have already overcome in the Borderlands." I didn't know what she meant by "Borderlands," or how or when Ryohei had saved anyone, but I could tell by the look on my brother's face that this was exactly the speech he needed to hear. At that moment I decided that I liked that girl. She is the type of strong, exceptional woman who loves my brother as much as he loves her. I decided to leave the two lovebirds alone for a while and hummed something about coffee.
