After successfully catching a Spearow, Brooklyn proceeds his way to Viridian City, both walking and gliding, desperate to get there and to strengthen up his two Pokemon.
"I know I… I can get there. And soon my first gym battle too." Brooklyn muttered to himself. But when he went to get a drink, he couldn't even get water out of it, groaning in annoyance, knowing he had to find some kind of water source.
Sniffing the air, he soon smelled out some water for himself, climbing a tree and taking into the air, eyes scanning about until he saw that lake from his walking earlier. A smile was on his beak, looking forward to filling up his canteen along with getting something to eat in Viridian City too.
My Pokemon are probably pretty beat too. If there is a gym in Viridian City, who knows if a level 6 Charmander and a new Spearow could take on whatever Gym Leader is there, Brooklyn thought, eyes casting down to his bag where his Pokemon are safe inside. At least he didn't have to physically carry Charmander out of his ball anymore. Who knew Pokeballs were so light.
Soon he landed near the river, pulling out his canteen and filling it up. Brooklyn drank the whole thing then soon called out his two Pokemon to give them drinks as well.
Spearow Brooklyn found out on his way was a female, since she seemed pretty fierce. Spearow squawked up at him, gazing at the red gargoyle with her sharp eyes. Brook grinned at her. "H-Hi Spearow. Hope you're thirsty. I found some water."
It had Spearow squawk its name again, putting her beak into the stream to drink, Charmander doing so as well. Brooklyn sat back, smiling at the sight though he wished other Pokemon could show up soon. His stomach rumble, opening up his bag, Brooklyn stared in disappointment as he saw there wasn't much food left except for two sandwiches.
"Ugh, I need more food. Suppose I can give the other to Charmander and Spearow," Brooklyn decided as he split up the sandwich for them both. "Here you go guys." Charmander took the sandwich half in his hands, smiling at him and beginning to eat while Spearow ate the other.
Brooklyn stared down at the water while eating, wondering if there could be anybody to give him directions and if there was any Pokemon living in the surface.
Meanwhile under the river a Magikarp swam about, its face looking rather lonely. He had been searching for a while to find the right trainer for him, and most of the time was rejected since he was considered a useless Pokemon.
Magikarp murmured under its breath and swam lazily along until it spotted someone on the shore, but it didn't look like a human or a Pokemon. Magikarp burbled its name, swimming a little bit closer and saw Brooklyn, his eyes rounding but seeing how sad the new person was.
Maybe this can be my new trainer… Magikarp thought, wiggling it's side fins in excitement. Magikarp decided to swim up to the surface and greet its possible new friend.
While Brooklyn sat there, munching his sandwich, his ears picked up the sound of the river bubbling. Looking over, he saw something swimming. Tensing, Brooklyn waited to see what would come out until to his surprise a large red thing jump out, smacking Brooklyn right in his face.
Brooklyn screeched in pain from how hard the thing's skin was, falling down on his bottom and causing Spearow and Charmander to jump from whoever assaulted them, Charmander glaring until his eyes calmed down when seeing nothing but a Magikarp flopping there on the ground.
"Ugh, what hit me?" Brooklyn huffed in irritation, rubbing his head.
"Magikarp, Magikarp," a voice came, Brooklyn's vision clearing to see a strange red fish with a crown flopping on the ground, staring up at him with a wide eyed vision. Brooklyn blinked a couple times, pulling out his Pokedex. "Pokemon or a fish?" He pointed it at the red fish and he was startled when seeing it show up.
"Magikarp, a fish Pokemon. It has hard scales and only knows two fighting moves." The Pokedex read to him aloud, making Brooklyn's ears lower while watching Magikarp just flop there on the grass, its eyes looking strangely happy.
It made the red gargoyle shake his head. If he wanted Pokemon all he desired was to have one who could hold up well in battle and to be able to take care of them. This one, it just didn't look so desirable to Brooklyn. He backed up, unaware of his bag of Pokeballs having spilled out too when he was hit. "You're looking at the wrong trainer, little guy. Why don't you just swim along now? I can put you back… hey!" Brook had tried picking up the Magikarp but Magikarp jerked out, flopping over to one of the empty Pokeballs.
Brooklyn's eyes widened as he watched Magikarp about to touch one of them. "Don't you think…!" He shouted, but too late. Magikarp happily touched the button on the Pokeball, the red beam snatching it up, and pulling it inside. The ball wiggled for a few moments then went still.
He facepalmed himself in agrivation, while Spearow and Charmander glanced at each other, curious at the idea of having a new companion they didn't even have to battle. Brooklyn picked up Magikarp's Pokeball. "Get out of there fish! I have more important things to do than worry about taking care of a Pokemon like you!" Brooklyn shouted, trying to point him at the water, but Magikarp wouldn't come out. He felt safe in the ball, sleeping soundly.
The young gargoyle gave another weak groan, glaring hard at Magikarp in his hand. "Suppose I'm stuck with this thing then, ugh. Alright. But you better not cause me any trouble." Brooklyn threatened, now deciding it would be a good time to get going to Viridian City, lost or not, still finding it hard to believe he never had to battle this Magikarp at all to catch it.
While trudging along after putting Spearow and Charmander back into his bag, Brooklyn suddenly felt nervous. What if the humans there wouldn't let him compete in the Pokemon League, because he wasn't human? What if they decide he was some kind of strange Pokemon to experiment on? Brook shuddered, not liking the idea of being experimented on in this strange place, leaning against a tree and pondering what to do until a voice was heard.
"Are you lost?"
Brook jumped high into the air, giving a yelp of surprise and fright, his wings out completely. "Who's there?!" He demanded, only to see a young girl with red hair and a yellow short sleeve shirt standing there next to the river, eyeing him with curiosity and maybe a little bit nervous too. "What kind of Pokemon are you?" The girl questioned in awe. It made Brooklyn moan after that since this was the second time people have asked him. "No, I'm not a Pokemon. I'm called a gargoyle. Who are you?"
The girl, still amazed at seeing a creature that isn't a Pokemon that could speak English replied. "My name is Misty. What is yours?"
Brooklyn swished his tail. "Brooklyn. I came from another world in New York here to join in the Pokemon League after I rescued a Charmander in my world." He explained.
Misty had a hard time believing that this gargoyle Brooklyn could really be a Pokemon trainer since it usually happened to humans. "But why are you wandering by the river?"
It made Brooklyn feel hot with embarassment. "Guess you can say I am lost, and I have no idea where Viridian City is." He mumbled, looking down. Misty in her heart began to feel sorry for Brooklyn since he wasn't attacking her. She pulled out a map she had in her pocket.
"Perhaps this could help you get to Viridian City and to other places here in the Kanto Region. I could always get another one anyway." She offered to Brooklyn who blinked, stunned at the young girl being so nice to him when usually no humans ever were. He took it cautiously. "Uh, thanks I guess. Are you a Pokemon trainer too?"
Misty shrugged. "In a way yes. I came from Cerulean City to train water Pokemon. All I got are Staryu and Starmie. What Pokemon do you have?"
Brooklyn stared at the three Pokeballs in his hand. "Besides Charmander here all I caught were Spearow andâ Magikarp," He muttered, feeling pretty hopeless in thinking he could get any good Pokemon here.
Misty gasped, looking excited when he mentioned Magikarp. "Oh, Magikarp! I've really wanted to get one since it eventually evolves into Gyarados later!" She squealed, Brooklyn glancing at the Pokeball with Magikarp inside.
"Really?" He asked in amazement at the idea of this little fish possibly turning into something much cooler. Misty nodded. "I wish you luck in raising Magikarp and on your Pokemon league." She encouraged. "I never saw anybody else except humans. I'm sure you'll be a great trainer."
Brooklyn felt himself flush from the girl's words as he smiled, nodding. "Thanks, I hope so too." He replied, going to shake the girl's hand Misty's eyes were in awe at how smooth Brooklyn's hands were, expecting them to feel rough but they weren't. Brooklyn inside was happy that Misty didn't instantly hate him, probably from her being around these Pokemon creatures she was used to strange ones like him.
Eventually the two new aquaintances parted ways with each other so Brooklyn could try finding the Viridian City gym and get his first badge, his nerves at an all time high after climbing up a tree to glide over to the town, Misty watching him glide, wishing she could fly as she soon went back to her fishing, the two unaware that just now Ash had started his own training with his Pikachu.
….
It took Brooklyn nearly until sunset to reach Viridian City, his wings already tired from their gliding he had decided to land to save energy when he could soon get some food for himself and his Pokemon.
"Not long guys. Any moment now, we will be eating good again," Brooklyn assured his companions in their Pokeballs. Since he only had three Brooklyn wondered how many more he can aquire while on his journey, spotting the welcome sign for Viridian City just ahead, relief in his body.
The red gargoyle wandered through the first part of the city streets, gazing around which almost reminded him of home, wondering where the Pokemon Center could be. His eyes suddenly caught what looked like a poster on a wall.
He looked at it curiously, showing two humans on it. One female and the other male with an R underneath them. "Let's hope they aren't too dangerous." Brooklyn said until a loud whistle startled him.
"Hold it right there!"
Brook shouted out when something tackled his already exhausted body, pinning him right down there on the pavement making Brooklyn wince in pain from the assault. "Hey, wait, I'm notâ" I'm not dangerous!" He yelled, struggling when finding himself being underneath what looked like a woman wearing a police uniform.
The woman narrowed her eyes. "It is against the law for stray Pokemon to wander around in a place like this with those two crooks from Team Rocket stealing them! Where is your trainer?!"
That made the red gargoyle angry further. "Ugh, for the last time, I am not a Pokemon lady! I'm a gargoyle who is trying to be a trainer! Let me up!" He roared, finding the woman stronger than he anticipated.
Soon, the woman heard honesty in his voice then stepped off him, pulling Brooklyn to his feet. "We'll see about that. Do you have a Pokedex or regular ID?"
Brooklyn nodded, pulling out his own Pokedex. The woman officer opened it.
"Brooklyn. He is a gargoyle who once lived in New York and rescued a Charmander who had him arrive in Pallet Town to get his approval from Oak to be a trainer. Gargoyles are harmless and only attacks others in self defense."
"Wow, I didn't know my Pokedex was also an ID," Brooklyn exclaimed, feeling a little bit lucky now to have something like this so people would know he wasn't evil. The police woman now was smiling at him, handing it back. "I'm sorry for the trouble. With Team Rocket around it's been putting me on edge. My name is Officer Jenny. Welcome to Viridian City Brooklyn." She greeted, holding out her hand. Brooklyn took it in return.
"Is there any way I can get to the Pokemon Center?" Brooklyn asked, feeling his stomach growl at that moment, making him hold it. Jenny noted at his hunger, and she smiled. "I can get you there. And I'll see that Nurse Joy can find some food for both you and your Pokemon."
She allowed him to ride on her moterbike which brought Brooklyn memories of how he rode his own, holding onto her waist while Jenny drove the bike over to the center.
After a few minutes of bike riding Brooklyn could see a large building with the letter P in front of a Pokeball above the door, heart thumping at the idea of encountering more trainers inside, Jenny stopping at the entrance. Brooklyn hopped off.
"Here we are Brooklyn. If you need anything just call Officer Jenny." She stated, saluting him. Brooklyn shifted, feeling awkward from having anybody salute him or any of his clan at all. "Uh, thanks. I'll see you around then." Brooklyn watched Jenny drive off, sighing then pushing open the door.
His jaw fell open when seeing how big the place was and spotted some other humans there with their Pokemon, including some he never saw before. One Brooklyn recognized a little from how much Lex bragged about it was called a Bulbasaur, along with a Squirtle.
Maybe I'll get lucky to catch a wild one sooner or later, Brooklyn thought while watching the kids playing or just petting them. His eyes drew to a teen boy with spiky hair who had a cheerleeding group of girls with him.
"Gary, Gary, he's our man! If he can do it, no one can!" Cheered the ladies, Gary smiling while holding one of his Pokeballs. Brooklyn decided it couldn't hurt to say hello.
Gary heard Brooklyn walking up to him and turned around, gaping in surprise at the sight of what looked like a Pokemon to him. Brooklyn raised up his hand. "I'm not a Pokemon if you're going to ask, and I don't want to hurt you. What-what's your name?"
The spiky haired boy puffed out his chest, knowing this strange creature wasn't going to attack as he introduced himself. "I am Gary Oak, grandson of Professor Oak. Surprised Grandfather didn't tell you at all about me." He taunted, making Brooklyn clench his fists just a bit, wishing Oak had told him.
"Guess he failed to do that. But I am on my way to be a Pokemon trainer." Brooklyn explained to Gary.
Gary eyed his bag. "Uhuh. And how many Pokemon did you catch?" He asked, a sneering gaze on him.
Brooklyn's ears flattened. "Three." He replied under his breath but just enough for Gary to hear who began to laugh out loud, really ticking him off.
"A Gargoyle like you having only caught three Pokemon? Now that's to laugh, hah!" He taunted Brooklyn, Brooklyn's eyes glowing but he kept himself from attacking since this was only a kid. "I can be a great trainer, you just watch Gary!" Growled Brooklyn, turning to stalk away from the kid to register.
His face was still heated when reaching the desk, glad to be away from Gary now and seeing another woman with pink hair at the front desk in a nurses' outfit. He hit the bell on the desk, catching her attention. "Oh! What a surprise! And who are you?" The nurse asked.
Brooklyn sighed a little glad she didn't seem to be afraid too. "I'm Brooklyn from New York in another world. Oak sent me." He said, putting his Pokedex on the table which the nurse took. "Welcome to Viridian City. I am Nurse Joy and I will ensure your Pokemon are full of energy for your journey." She stated with a rather cute smile to Brooklyn.
"Thanks," Brooklyn replied as he put his three Pokeballs on the table now, Joy taking them all. "Is there a gym around to get my first badge?"
Joy nodded. "Yes, the Pewter City gym It is owned by gym leader Brock. Brock's gym is the best place for beginners."
Brooklyn's heart thumped from excitement at the idea of getting a badge all for himself. Maybe some food will help him calm down and perhaps call up Professor Oak to tell him he had arrived.
He managed to find the cafe here in the Center, doing his best to avoid the curious eyes of the kids and teens staring at his presence. Brooklyn caped his wings after getting his food, sitting down to eat.
One reckless kid though thought he was a Pokemon again, taking out his Pokeball. "My chance!" He whispered softly, taking careful aim, and tossing it. "Pokeball, go!"
The red ball smacked off of Brooklyn's head, making Brooklyn yelp in pain, rubbing his head, turning to growl only to see a 10 year old boy there, looking nervous and frustrated. "What's the idea? I'm not a Pokemon! I keep saying this to everybody!" He shouted, the kid turning to quickly get away from him. Brooklyn took some breaths to calm down, finishing the rest of his food so he could find a computer away from these crazy trainers.
Brooklyn was lucky to find one, having been able to dial Professor Oak's number thanks to the one he was given in his Pokedex until soon the number began to ring. "Please pick up," Brooklyn muttered, tapping his fingers on the desk until to his surprise, he wasn't just hearing the voice, but seeing him too.
"Oh? Who's there? Hey, hello, Brooklyn!" Oak greeted with a smile. Brooklyn grinned back. "Hi, I made it to Viridian City and eventually will travel to Pewter City in a couple days." He said.
Oak smiled when he heard. "Pewter Gym, where beginners earn the Boulder Badge. Should only be a day's travel or two."
Brook nodded. "I look forward to battling Brock," He said.
"How is your Charmander by the way? And have you caught any new Pokemon?" Oak questioned curiously.
The red gargoyle smiled. "Charmander has been doing pretty great. And I already caught two more. Well, the third, I didn't really have to battle." He said, feeling awkward. "They are a Spearow and Magikarp."
Professor Oak looked impressed he was able to catch a Spearow. "Your Spearow should serve you well in your first battle but not so sure about that Magikarp since it only knows Splash as its battle move. Maybe, you can try to at least catch one more Pokemon before your gym battle."
Brooklyn knew that could be a good idea. "Yeah, I can use tomorrow to do that. But I wouldn't know where to look."
"There are some caves nearby here that are full of dark and ground Pokemon. Those could be your best chances of catching another one." Oak advised.
Brooklyn nodded his head but then he had one more question. "I-I met your grandson here Professor. How come you never told me about him?"
That made Oak look flustered. "Well, uh, sorry about that. My grandson Gary is a bright, young, and ambitious trainer. He pretty much arrived here hours before the last one named Ash Ketchum. You might run into him next one day."
I wouldn't know about bright. Ambitious, yes. Brook thought, his ears flat on his head before nodding again. "Uh, ok. Thanks. I'll try to talk to you soon." Oak waved him goodbye after he hung up and Brooklyn let loose a breath, deciding he could find a quiet spot to turn to stone to gain some energy for a bit before finding a new Pokemon tomorrow.
Brooklyn is in Viridian City now!
