Chapter 21

Jamie smiled lightly to himself as he adjusted the long sleeves of his T-shirt, making sure to cover everything he needed to cover, satisfied he stepped out of the alleyway and into the crowd of people who were gathering to attend the political rally. Already there were whispers, excitement and apprehension. They were outside City Hall and gathering around the bottom of the steps, several police officers stood as a living cordon while at the top of the steps was a stand with two small podiums for the Mayor and Osborn, equipped with microphones and such, everything all ready for the upcoming debate.

"Jamie, hey, over here."

He turned and smiled upon seeing Sam, as well as butterflies in his stomach. He walked over to Sam quickly and soon made it to his side.

"Hey Sam, hope I'm not late?"

Sam shook his head. "Not really, no, uh...they're still setting up."

Jamie nodded. "Ah, that's good...so, you need me for anything?"

"Not exactly, but I'd love the company." He said, a blush creeping up his neck, but he continued onwards. "I mean, I'm only here because Robby wants me to take the pictures so the Bugle can carry the story. I'm not too keen on either guy here, you know."

Jamie bit his lip, he knew full well that neither man was any good, Osborn was his own warning, but now he knew the dirty laundry that Mayor Sanders was hiding, of course he couldn't reveal that.

So he just shrugged. "I'm not too keen on either of them either."

Sam nodded and looked around.

Quite the crowd had gathered, this would after all be the last debate before the mayoral elections were due to take place the following week. He soon saw a couple of familiar faces and nudged Jamie, nodding over.

"Look, there's Laurel...not alone either."

Jamie nodded. "Yeah, she's with her family."

Laurel caught their eyes at that moment and they all waved as she stood with her three sisters, Laurel being the third of the four in terms of age, and her parents.

"Laurel was already here, yet you waited for me?" Jamie quipped. "Thanks dude."

Sam gave a nervous laugh but nodded and they took note that Natalie was also present. As the crowd began to applaud as both candidates began to approach their podiums, Jamie narrowed his eyes as he glanced backwards and saw a figure in the crowd, a black clad black hat wearing figure watching Natalie.

'He's here, great.' Jamie thought angrily, knowing there was nothing he could do at the moment.

He instead turned his focus back to the debate, about to begin as the two men stood and Mayor Sanders began to make an announcement.

"Thank you citizens for coming, I assure you that we will be able to answer your questions, this debate will surely make things clear on who the obvious choice for Mayor should me." He said, his voice oily and his implications obvious.

Yet Norman did not look the least bit perturbed.

Instead he had a rather smarmy smirk on his face as he made his own announcement.

"Yes, indeed Mayor Sanders." He said. "After all, we can't have a mayor who has...questionable connections to certain...individuals with suspect connections themselves."

That brought some confused whispers and mutterings amongst the people while Sam stayed focused on his task, taking photo after photo. Jamie meanwhile was tense as he saw through the subtle meaning of Norman's words.

'That settles it, he does have the drive, he knows about Mayor Sanders connections to Kingpin.' Jamie noted to himself worriedly.

Indeed, Mayor Sanders looked rather unsettled but recovered well.

"Yes well, that is always a risk, we have to be careful, don't we?"

Norman gave a chuckle. "Yes, we do."

The debate was only just beginning but it was clear that with just his opening statement, Norman had unbalanced Sanders. But before the debate could continue, it started and all hell broke loose. Jamie tensed, his spider-sense going off, then the explosion happened. There were screams, gasps and then the sound of rotor blades. Looking up they noticed several strange VTOLs hovering in. From which several man were coming down on ropes, all of them armed and all of them dressed in clothes that instantly made Jamie think of Kraven. Then the screams came again and the crowd began to try and scatter, run, but kept getting in each other's way, for the men had all drawn guns or swords and began attacking the crowd.

"Shit, what the hell!?" Sam gasped. "Jamie, we gotta get outta here!"

Jamie grimaced. "Y-yeah...c'mon."

Inside he was cursing, he had no means of slipping away and changing into his suit, he couldn't do anything to save these poor people.

'No choice, c'mon, at the very least, I've gotta save Sam, get him out.' Jamie told himself.

He still couldn't believe the horrors these men were causing, men who dressed similarly to Kraven.

Speaking of Kraven, it was at that moment the man himself came down from one of the VTOLs, landing right next to an irate Mayor Sanders.

"How dare you, monsters, you-!" The man blustered.

In a horrific show of strength, Kraven reacted by grabbing the mayor and crushing his skull with his bare hands. He then leapt from the stage and drew his machete and in a horrific act, making Jamie and Sam stop in horror, he killed Natalie before their eyes.

"No, oh no, no, no…" Sam gasped in horror.

Jamie was frozen too. "This is...this can't. Sam c'mon."

Sam looked at Jamie in shock. "Jamie, what are you-?"

"We have to run, I'm sorry but…" Jamie replied, determined to keep Sam safe.

Then they heard Kraven's voice as he shouted.

"Where are you Spider-Man, show yourself, I'm killing those you swore to protect, come and save them!" He remarked. "Or maybe I'll just take that boy you care so much about."

That made Jamie sick to his stomach, Kraven had spotted Sam and was already on his way.

"Shit…"

Jamie was about to pull Sam away, to try to flee, only for them to witness another horrific event, this time hearing Laurel's heart-rending scream as Kraven then killed her father without caring who saw him. Before anything further could happen, Jamie's spider-sense flared again and he saw it.

"Sam, look out." He cried.

But then the smoke bomb exploded and engulfed them in a cloud that left them coughing and growing weak, by the time it cleared, they were on the ground, almost out cold as Kraven stood over them.

"Let's see if Spider-Man will come and save you then." Kraven said darkly.

That was the last they heard before everything went black.
