It was a normal day at the guildhall. Activity had increased thanks to the remodeling done by the mayor after Fairy Tail won the Grand Magic Games. Well, twice over after Tartarous destroyed the guild; it was nearly a miracle that it remained open at all. More jobs were being posted, and with that more people were away on jobs. Lucy's most recent job ended just as others she normally paired up with were gone, so she was helping Mirajane with paperwork at the guildhall.
She couldn't remember anymore what happened that caused it, maybe it was an awkward step, maybe she had her head in the clouds at the wrong moment. Either way, the result was the same; a terrible thud as the top of her head collided with one of the wooden beams of the building. The documents in her hand spilled out as she clutched her head, a distinct throb pulsating in rhythm with her heart. Mirajane's voice called out to her, helping her to her feet, worryingly pressing a cool hand to her head. Lucy smiled. "I'm alright," she said.
She wasn't though.
Less than an hour later she was shaking, her vision going double, a feeling of dizziness overtaking her. Mirajane's normal calm voice erupted in concern and Lucy was whisked away to the closest doctor, Porlyusica, who managed to berate and diagnose her at the same time. A concussion. Hopefully not one too severe, but something to monitor nonetheless. Mirajane rubbed the small of Lucy's back and held back tears, apologizing for not noticing it sooner. Lucy gave a pained smile. She was busy too, so she didn't blame her for the oversight. The comforted became the comforter.
Lucy would not be able to go on any taxing jobs for a while. That was ok. Lucy had barely been out in the field these past few months, the jobs she did take strayed closer to home. It would be no different than before. The grumpy doctor insisted she stay the night, not sleeping, of course, to make sure nothing turned for the worse. Mirajane reluctantly left and Lucy was alone, the day turning to night, her only companion being the old woman.
And herself.
The tears came first, then the rising heart rate and the feeling of being suffocated. Porlyusica was by her side in a second, but it wasn't the concussion symptoms she was feeling, it was her powerlessness, leaking out all over her. How was it she managed to get a concussion when she wasn't even on a mission? Why was it that whenever she took a step forward, something else forced her two steps back? What had made her so strong before, and why did it escape her now? Everything was so hard, so much harder to bear when everyone was gone and she remained, all alone. Even her closest friend…
The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them. "I wish I could just–"
The memory cut off as abruptly as two fingers to a wick of flame.
A/N: Not me realizing that it's an canon-divergence AU and the guildhall was destroyed during Tartarous. Nooope. Glad I was able to edit this in time!
