Something canon compliment (well six months after the final book). Thought I'd do something Charlotte centric and fulfill the prompt library for her. Brief mentions of Stacey and some of the BSC as well. Please review and tell me what you think!
Nine-year-old Charlotte Theresa Johanssen finally reached the fifth grade. It was like she was on top of the world being the youngest in her class, yet the in the last grade at Stoneybrook Elementary School. To think next year, she would be at the middle school.
That thought terrified and excited her.
"And I told Vanessa that we could be partners and she agreed," said Charlotte to Stacey McGill, who listened to her.
The two girls were slowly walking to the Stoneybrook Public Library. Her red wagon trailed behind her piled with the books she had finished on her fall break. Some books for older readers and some aimed for younger. It was her hull sort to speak. The library a warm and welcoming building with pictures of book characters on the wall leading to the children's room.
"That's great Char, really."
Stacey seemed a little distracted as she quieted down. They rounded into the children's room after dropping off her wagon outside and returned the books. Stacey sat down with a magazine in the newly refurbished teen section.
Charlotte herself going straight for the stacks looking for the newest Judy Blume book. Then a Magic Treehouse book about the Revolutionary War on display. At least one book from the teen section and her wagon would be filled again. Maybe she should add a few picture books for good measure, those were always fun to read.
"What are you going to do with those books?" she asked to Ms. Feld stacking up a cart. They were almost as tall as her.
"Well what I'm doing is called weeding. These books haven't been checked out within the last two years."
Oh that was kind of sad that none of those books got to go home with someone. She looked at some unfamiliar titles and some familiar ones from when she was little.
"What are you going to do with them?" she asked.
"I have a method I use," said Ms. Feld brightly. "Sometimes I'll see if I can make some displays with them if they're in good condition. Like these Valentine's Day books with a craft. If they don't get checked out within two or three months, I'll take them out of the computer catalog. Then we'll either sell them or donate them to the hospital or shelters."
"Wow," she said softly looking at the stacks that could go to those people. It would be free books for those lucky kids. She looked at the titles of a couple of books and silently wished them luck in their new homes when they got there. Maybe she would buy one at the book sale.
She looked around at the books before finding Stacey. There was yet another stack of books in front of her and Charlotte sighed, taking in the new book smell and held it close. Stoneybrook Public Library was her special happy place. It was like she had friends waiting for her and she was coming to say hi. There was the satisfaction of finishing something new and hearing it woosh inside the book drop.
Who knows maybe one day she'd work here one day, thought Charlotte, and headed to the check out with Stacey. She had a lot of reading to do.
