As time passed, Hope still had trouble making his choice, though he kept his promise to stay in touch with Fairy Tail. Despite its wild nature, the guild was also a very welcoming place. It was surprisingly easy to make friends with the members. As good as it all was, Hope's trepidation remained, wondering if he could find a place to belong after such a long time...

He had just been passing through a small village when the earth suddenly shook violently. Hope barely retained his balance, wondering just what was going on. A huge, monstrous figure could barely be seen stomping towards the forest near the village's entrance.

''What the heck is that?!'' A man cried.

A woman paled ''My kids were making plans to go play over there with their friends...I saw them all leave-!'' She immediately tried to head over, leaving the man to grab her arm ''What're you doing?!''

''Didn't you hear me?! The're all...!''

''I get it, but you're just going to be putting yourself in danger too. Let's find help!''

Their argument was cut off as both were startled to see Hope flying towards the scene, making them stop.

''You think that kid's going to...?'' The woman frowned.

''Well, it looks like he's a mage. He'll have better chances than us. But let's just not stand here!''

''Right!''

Hope quickly discovered that their fears were had come true. A massive lizard-like creature with rock encrusted scales and claws was closing in on the aforemention children, who had thankfully managed to hide in a cave in the middle of the forest. But at this rate, the monster was sure to find them.

Thinking fast, he conjured a big sphere of light, using it to blind the reptile. Startled at the resulting roars, one of the kids tentatively poked his head out to see what was going on. ''Eh, what...?''

''Stay there.'' Hope held up a hand. ''Aegis.''

A golden magic circle flashed before a shield of light materialized around the cave, to the kids' surprise. Hope swiftly took out his swords as the monster let out a roar of rage. It thrashed its tail, a number of rock spires surged as a result but Hope merely waved a hand, a silver magic circle appeared before all the spires came to stop. This was Stop Flow, a memoria spell which halts time around a certain area.

The monster let out a roar and more rocks flew at Hope, who quickly created a powerful tempest of shimmering light that blew the rocks to pieces. He then willed magic to his swords, which seemed to grow in length as light gathered round them before charging ahead, slashing it a few times. When it made to attack once more, Hope flew up and created a few spheres of light which unleashed a flurry of beams at the monster, taking it out.

He let out a breath as he landed, cancelling the Aegis. It took him a moment to realize that the kids must have been watching the whole thing as they were staring at him in awe.

''That was...'' One of them started.

''...so cool!'' Another kid added, hurrying to Hope with the rest of the group soon coming along. ''You beat that thing so fast!''

''You're so strong!''

''That was awesome!''

''Ah, thanks...'' Hope felt his face grow warm at the continuing praise. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to this ''...so you're all okay, right?'' They all confirmed. ''Would you all go back now? We could see that monster back from the village, your parents must be worried sick.''

Some of the kids exchanged alarmed looks, apparently have not thought of that. Regardless, they all agreed that it was best to return.

They were met with some of the villagers half-way, including the kids' parents, who were delighted to see them unharmed. They wasted no time in thanking Hope, surprised but relieved that this stranger came through for them at such a dire time.

''Oh, so you're a free lance mage? We haven't seen many of those lately. Reminds of some of the big names like the White Paladin...'' A young man mused.

''Ah, that's it!'' One of the kids smiled. ''That's who he reminds me of. Everyone's been saying stuff about how he's actually young and the way he fought that monster off is a lot like the stories say!''

His companions acknowledged the point, the kid wagerly asking if it was a coincidence or Hope was the genuine article only to be elated with the answer.

The mother Hope had seen earlier smiled warmly ''It's really lucky you were here. We can't thank you enough-you've got to have a reward for this!''

''Yeah, it's the least we can do.'' The following statement earned number of agreements from those nearby.

''Ah...well, if you say so...'' Hope had eventually gotten accustomed to receiving some form of reward even before starting to work as a free lance mage. It had become more of a necessity over time as he had been making it on his own for years. Some of his friends had been quick to stress that he shouldn't always be expected to do something for nothing as it was a quick way for people to take advantage of him.

But he hadn't been expecting such a thing now. He was just relieved everything worked out for the best.

A few days later, at Magnolia...

Happy sighed, watching downtrodden Natsu go after Lisanna, Mira, Cana and Levy heading out of the guild. Well, as much as he wanted to help, Natsu really brought this on himself...

The cat blinked as he spotted a shadow up in the air, looking over in time to see Hope land nearby. ''You're back!''

Returning the cat's smile as a pleased Happy flew up to him, he took a moment to greet his friends. Mira crossed her arms and gave Natsu a hard look ''That's nice and all but you're still coming.''

''Aw, man!''

''You're not getting off the hook, Natsu.'' Cana ignored his grumbling.

Hope's puzzled expression led to an explanation of how Natsu had been picking a fight with some of the others earlier. It wound up with him almost burning them and destroying Cana's cards, one of Levy's books and even ruining Erza's cake.

''Ah, that couldn't have gone over well...'' Hope trailed off.

''On the contrary...'' Mira punctuated her words by grabbing Natsu's scarf. ''...we've decided that he has to help us out today. Given what the brat nearly caused, I think it's almost too nice. It's either that or he gets to be a punching bag for me and Erza.''

Natsu held back a cringe at the thought. As much as he hated this plan, he wouldn't dare go against the two she-devils of the guild. ''That's not fair! What kind of choice is that?!''

''Oh, so you want me to think of a punishment?'' Mira's smirk made him recoil. ''Why Natsu, I never knew you were so nice as to let me have such fun!''

''N-no way!''

''T-there's no need to go that far, Mira-nee...'' Lisanna, like the others was also unnerved by the thought of what Mira's definition of fun would be.

''Tch, as noisy as ever.'' A new voice spoke up, bringing their attention to a teen with spiky blond hair and a scar over one of his eyes.

''Laxus!'' Natsu's fist ignited. ''This is perfect, fight me!''

Before anyone could react, he leapt to attack the blond, who merely side stepped and tripped him. ''Why the hell would I do that?''

Natsu wasn't about to be deterred though, another attempt only getting himblown back with a blast of lightning. Noticing his expression, Hope grabbed his old friend's arm ''Come on, there's no need to fight...''

''Oh yes, there is! I'll show that jerk I'm way tougher than he is!''

''But look what he did when he's hardly even trying.'' After all-Natsu had clearly taken plenty of damage from that lightning attack. He proceeded to cast a shimmering silver circle around Natsu which began to glow. This was the Memoria spell known as Ethereal Veil, in which time could be reversed on a person up to a certain extent. It was a good substitute for healing magic, an increasingly rare ability.

''Oh, you can tell? Looks like we have someone with a little brains here...'' Laxus gave the boy a scrutinizing look. ''...wait, you're the kid who was with Gramps the other night...'' Hope blinked but the older boy carried on before he could voice his confusion. ''...which means you must be the White Paladin from the stories.'' A sneer ''I guess the talk's overrated if it's a little squirt like you-as if it could be real.''

Natsu scowled ''Hey, shows what you know! Hope...''

''...It's okay, Natsu. I don't really care about my fame anyway but I doubt I'd change his mind. He's free to believe what he wants, that doesn't change the truth.''

Laxus' eyes narrowed a bit-even if he wasn't showing it, Hope's response surprised him. The blond could actually tell that the boy was plenty more powerful than he appeared. He wasn't sure what he was expecting but mere calm acceptance of his taunting never crossed his mind. ''...Hmph, whatever. You're all nothing but losers in the end.''

Mira smirked as she watched him leave, Laxus' attitude was so usual that it often didn't get a rise out of her anymore. It was pretty refreshing to see someone handle him like this though ''Not bad at all, kid. I think you really took the wind out of his sails.''

''It was only true...erm, so who was he? He said something strange back there...''

''Laxus is Master Makarov's grandson.'' Levy informed. ''This is totally normal for him. He probably saw you guys back when Master invited you to spend the night.''

Hope certainly wasn't expecting that. Makarov had been so kind and welcoming...the differences between them were jarring to say the least. Why was he so mean to his own guild mates?

Happy had an idea ''Say, Hope-can you come with us? Knowing Natsu, he'll definitely push his luck and get himself in trouble again.''

''Oi, I can hear you!'' The cat had been mostly quiet but this still didn't escape Natsu's enhanced hearing.

''...To be fair, he has a point.'' Levy mumbled.

Cana and even Mira nodding to this only ticked him off further. It wasn't like he needed someone to hold his hand!

''Ah, okay-sure.'' Hope decided.

''Now this is a first...'' Cana mused. ''...a boy who's actually fine to go shopping.''

''Really?'' Hope couldn't say he enjoyed this like the girls seemed to but it was all right. He got to spend time with some friends and see more of the town, it was a good result all around.

''They just mope and whine about it a whole lot-exhibit A.'' The girl gestured at Natsu, who was indeed down in the dumps, trudging about while carrying some bags. Hope quickly found that Happy's concerns were well-founded as Natsu's general grumpy attitude this really could cause him trouble, they'd already had to help him avoid Mira's wrath more than once as it were.

The boy surprised them by gathering some of the bags before creating a translucent sphere of golden light which easily held their purchases all as it gloated in mid-air. ''Nice!''

Happy prodded the sphere, surprised at the solid feel. ''Wow! Does it hold for long?''

Hope nodded ''I'm still learning about this spell but I think it can hold up to a certain weight. This should be fine.''

''Good thinking. You know, I don't think I've seen much people use light magic like you do.'' Lisanna remarked, recalling the boy shaping light in a few ways before.

''Same here-it almost reminds me of Gray's creation magic.'' Her sister added.

''Well, I don't know if it would go that far...it's just, I'm more comfortable using light magic so maybe it comes easier to me. It almost reminds me of something good, something really nice so it's soothing...'' Hope noticed their curious expressions. ''...ah, sorry-I guess that wasn't really clear...''

''Nah, I get it. Dragon slayer magic reminds me of Igneel and all the time I spent with him so I'm totally proud and happy to have it.'' Natsu stated.

Levy nodded ''Even if your memories aren't very clear, the feelings from those times must have stayed. I'd say it's a measure of how much those times meant to you. So in a way, it means you haven't forgotten them-not completely.''

Hope began to smile, he hadn't looked at it that way before but he liked the sound of that. ''Maybe...''

''So hey, isn't it hard learning about two magics? I know people struggle to master just the one.'' Cana wondered

''Yeah, but...'' Hope bit his lip. ''...I was taught about both and I didn't want to forget what I learned so I'm trying to make the most of it.''

''That makes sense, good effort though.'' Levy perked up ''You're trying to learn more on your own, right? How about you ask Master for some advice? I bet it'd really help.''

''Oh, good idea-Gramps is awesome with magic. He'll know a whole bunch!'' Natsu exclaimed.

The boy faltered, Makarov had already gone out of his way to help with the situation surrounding his past ''You think that's all right? I wouldn't want to trouble him...''

''Ah, don't sweat the small stuff-it'll be fine!''

''Aye!'' Happy chimed in. ''Master's a great teacher, I bet he'll be all for it.''

Well, if they were so sure...Hope wouldn't deny that a chance to learn from a Wizard Saint would really do him a lot of good.

Natsu's stomach growled ''How long is this gonna go on?''

''What did I say about the whining?'' He froze up at Mira's glare. ''Suck it up, you big baby. Now come on!''

Later, the group returned to the guild, many were surprised to see Hope but they gladly welcomed him.

As it turned out Makarov had no issues with teaching Hope, if anything-he was happy with the idea. ''Just let me know when you're ready and I'll see what I can do.''

''Oh, thank you.''

''So how did Natsu actually pull through the trip?'' Gray was really expecting the hot headed boy to do nothing but aggravate the others.

''Oh, it was a close call.'' Cana drawled. ''A good part of that is thanks to Hope though. I'll tell you, that kid's incredibly patient.''

''Yeah? Well, he'd have to be to put up with that Ash Brain...''

''I'd say something about the pot and the kettle but I don't feel like wasting my breath. Also, clothes.'' Cana added pointedly, Gray cringing away.

''Dammit, not again!''

''...How does he keep losing his clothes?'' Hope wondered.

''He 'claims' that its because of his magic-key word being 'claims'.'' Happy deadpanned.

''That about sums it up, yes.'' Erza shook her head. None of them could really buy the claim as even all the solutions Makarov tried had failed in less than a day.

''I'm sorry about Laxus, by the way.'' Makarov began after a moment. ''I just don't know what to do with that boy.''

''Oh, it's all right. You don't have to apologize, it's hardly the first time someone had that sort of reaction when they heard about me.''

The boy's response made Cana remember something ''Oh, I've been meaning to ask-you're totally used to dealing with people like that, huh?''

Hope nodded ''A lot of people are surprise when the truth about me comes out. Some of them take it badly but I've learned not to let them get to me. I have my own reasons for my actions. It has nothing to do with them. I just chose to do what I think is right.''

Now that was some resolve, Makarov grinned ''That's the way, you just keep going with that strong belief and you'll be fine.''

''So hey, how's it feel to travel like you do? I bet you've seen a whole lot of places.'' Gray remarked. Sure, they had seen plenty since they joined the guild but it had to be different for Hope.

''Yeah, well...it can be rough and at first, it was really...'' He shook his head, rethinking his words. ''...I really like it now. It's great to see what's out there and experience it first hand and I've learned a lot because of it.''

Makarov didn't miss his sudden pause and the pain and sadness flashing in his eyes. He was far too young to have such an expression...just what had happened to cause it?

''By the way, Master-regarding what you mentioned during Hope's first visit...'' Erza thought back to a time from a couple of months ago. ''...did you ever learn more about that story?''

''Ah...'' The guild master thought back to the rumors he had picked up from the Council. It had been something he was particularly invested in. Both because he really did want to help the boy and it wasn't everyday that they got a descendant of their founders here. ''...I'm almost sure it is you.'' He told Hope. ''Everything you mentioned fit with what I've learned...''

''Why almost then?'' Gray quirked a brow.

''There's one part I don't get, they claim that the Sherwind from the story died.''

The creation wizard looked taken aback, Lisanna blinking ''Because Hope started traveling on his own then? Hold on, what about the guy from the story?''

''According to Yajima, the last time he came over was about five years ago. He went straight to Crocus but considering all the trouble back then, it gets a bit vague. All I know for sure is that he came back empty handed and he cut his ties off to Fiore for good.'' The listeners shared curious looks, wondering what this meant. They were aware of the battle that almost destroyed Crocus back then, started by one of the darkest guilds in the last decade. Though they were arrested, the capital hadn't escaped unscathed.

''So maybe something happened because of the mess back then?'' Elfman hazarded a guess. ''But if the guy actually never came back again...''

Erza tapped her chin in thought ''It's certainly strange. Just as you say, the cause likely lies with the situation back then but it must have been quite severe. Hope, did he ever specify whether he was coming back for you?''

''I'm not really sure...'' Hope vaguely remembered the man promising to take care of him and taking him somewhere safe. Crocus had been home to one of his closest friends, so he was convinced it would be fine but...could that possibly have to do with him?

No...it couldn't be-right?

''I keep wondering about that bit where they think Hope died, actually.'' Cana mused. ''Is it really just because he went off the map?''

''...No, probably not.''

Eyes traveled to Hope then, the boy's gaze was on the ground ''I...had to fake my death when a certain group came after me. It's why I haven't used my last name in so long.''

''Hold on, what? What happened?'' Natsu demanded, angry at the thought of someone trying to kill their friend.

''Apparently, they were hired to get rid of a monster.'' He started. ''I never found out the details but at the time, we couldn't see any other way.''

''Hired? You mean someone sent people out to get you?'' Levy received a nod. Needless to say, this was alarming. Why would anyone do such a thing?.

''You told us before about traveling with your best friend-didn't he ever help you?'' Elfman's question made them pause as the realization sank in. This was Hope's third visit since they met him and they had yet to see this friend of his. But why?

''...He did, more than you think.'' Hope faltered ''He's been here all along. It's...complicated but...I've actually meaning to show you.'' He took a few steps back. ''Um...this is probably going to surprise you but just give me a chance to explain, please.''

Many exchanged curious look at this and he closed his eyes. A light flashed around him then, forcing them to look away. When they could see again, many jaws dropped at the sight awaiting them.

Standing where Hope had been was a big, magnificent, golden bird. The new arrival had a crest of white and orange feathers, wide wings and powerful claws as well as iridescent tail feathers. The bird's power and majesty was clear as day, it seemed to radiate a subtle glow. It made for quite a remarkable sight and they knew that this was nothing like any avian they had see before.

''Whoa, what?!''

''Who the heck is that?!''

''More like what is that?!'' A number of people spoke over each other in their shock.

''What's going on?!''

''And where's Hope?!'' Lisanna exclaimed.

''All of you, stop!'' Erza was just as stunned as they were but this wasn't helping. ''He promised to explain, remember?''

''Just be patient, all of you.'' Makarov looked at the bird. ''So...you're the friend Hope told us about? Sorry about all this but you have to understand this is rather confusing.''

''It was the same for us.'' was the response. ''My name is Endymion and yes, I am Hope's friend. Years ago, a certain group of vile humans decided to fuse my spirit with someone's magical core in attempt to make me into a weapon. Hope was the only one who survived that twisted experiment. It created a special link between us and now, you can say we share the same body.''

The revelations came as a shock, they hadn't ever heard of such a thing before. Even Makarov seemed taken aback at the possiblity-who would do something like this?

''...Now it makes sense...'' Makarov's expression turned grave. ''...magic like this seems far too dangerous. Even for all the power it grants us, magic can demand a price...I take it this is the reason Hope can't remember much of his past?''

''I'm afraid so. The experiment may have worked but those monsters caused plenty of damage to go around with. It almost...well, the less I say about that the better. We're still trying to deal with the repercussions.''

''So...you were around all along-why didn't you show up before?'' Natsu asked.

''I suppose you could say I was being cautious. Hope wanted to tell you all earlier but I wasnt sure how you'd react.''

''You worry too much! Sure, this was a surprise but it's totally cool!'' The dragon slayer returned.

''Aye Sir!'' Happy chimed in.

''Just goes to show what magic can do. Besides, you do realize that we've seen pretty bizarre stuff too, right? We've got monsters like Gildarts and even Mira, who can actually turn into a demon. The fact that you're a...'' Gray paused, realizing he didn't know what Endymion actually was.

''Phoenix.'' He supplied.

''Phoenix-right.'' The boy nodded. ''Well, it's positively tame compared to that.''

''Besides, you're Hope's friend, that's more than good enough for us. We can be friends too!'' Lisanna suggested.

Endymion was not the sort to trust easily, especially after a few certain events on their travels. The incident where Hope had to fake his death being a particularly sore point for the both of them. He hadn't been sure what to make of Fairy Tail, despite seeing how his best friend was warming up to them. Hope had been hurt terribly by people in the past and he had made it his mission to look out for the boy.

Seeing them now, how easily they'd taken him in stride and even willing to befriend him, how honest they seemed...perhaps he didn't have much to worry about after all. ''...You certainly defy expectations.''

Makarov chuckled proudly ''That's a Fairy Tail trademark.''

Since the two would stay for a few days, Makarov took Hope to the forest so they could begin their lessons...

Hope was really impressed, sure he knew Makarov was very powerful and skilled but seeing what he could do was amazing. He couldn't do much when it came to Memoria Magic as it was something not many were born wotj but his expertise with light magic was incredible. It was the first time he encountered a Wizard Saint so the lesson was even more of an eye opening experience. Makarov knew spells he had never even seen before and he could use it to attack and defend at the same time, even powering himself up.

Makarov was also very complimentary of the boy's skills, which was especially flattering from him. Also surprised to see that Hope was also learning about the Sacred Trigram (a collection of somewhat old light magic spells which can be complicated but are very useful) but glad to help him speed up the process. The old man's instruction had even given him a couple of ideas for new moves. Eventually, he had to head to the guild, Hope decided to stay and train a little more.

Endymion watched as his best friend conjured four rays of light which shot up into the air, swiftly reshaping them into four large shining swords which he directed to strike down some boulders, reducing them to nothing. 'Hmm, well done.' Hope smiled. 'Let's see how we can take it from here.'

'Right.' Both began to think, sure the move worked fine but there was no reason they couldn't try to improve it. Hope wondered if they could use Memoria magic to make it work better.

It was as they were in the middle of training that they were found by...

''Wait, it was you?''

Hope blinked and turned at the familiar voice while Endymion's eyes narrowed when he saw Laxus. Oddly enough, the blond showed nothing of the mocking behavior from yesterday-if anything he seemed intrigued.

''I thought it was weird for any of them to start training now.'' Laxus gave the area a speculative look. The signs of the training been going on for a while were plain as day. ''So you work out like this regularly?''

''Erm, yes?'' Hope wonderered where he was going with this. Why did he even care? ''Wouldn't anyone do so?''

''...You'd be surprised.'' Laxus thought back to the guild. The others spent far too much time fooling around in his opinion. He could hardly recall the last time he had seen most of them really try to improve. For all Natsu's talk about being strong, he hardly did much to show for it. They could be so much more if they'd simply be a bit more serious.

While he was the sort to hold those with power in high regard, Laxus could respect an earnest effort to become stronger ''Not bad, kid...you should keep it up.''

''Ah, right...'' The blond headed off, not sure what to make of that. He did seem sincere but...what was going on here?

'I'd say we're missing plenty of context.' Endymion mused, just as thrown-off. 'It seems there's more to him than meets the eye...'

It was during another visit that the two met Gildarts Clive, the strongest mage of Fairy Tail...

''That was fun, huh?'' Cana smiled, Endymion finishing giving her and Elfman a ride in the skies.

''Yeah, flying's awesome!'' The latter grinned. They were all glad they came to get along with Endymion. The phoenix was wise and worldly and he was still coming to trust them, he was fiercely protective of Hope so they knew he meant well.

''Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it but...why were you all so sure that letting Natsu on was a bad idea?'' The phoenix had to ask.

''Natsu gets motion sick big time. He falls apart the second you let him on a vehicle.'' Elfman informed.

''...I don't see how that's related.'' He wasn't a vehicle after all.

Lisanna began to explain ''We thought it just extended to vehicles but this one time, Macao tried to carry him after he was all bushed late at night and he got sick in a few seconds.''

''Yeaaah, he almost did on Mira too when Happy saw it and helped him-a couple of times after that too. So far, Happy's really been the only safe choice to take him anywhere.'' Cana added. ''I tried asking him what that's about but he only said Happy's family, not a vehicle, so of course he wouldn't get sick.''

Endymion and Hope immediately spotted the fallacy in the argument. After all, Natsu was a strong believer of everyone in Fairy Tail being family so why...? ''...That doesn't really add up...''

''Yeah, don't try applying common sense with that hothead. It never works.'' Gray drawled as the phoenix switched control with Hope, the boy taking a seat next to him. ''It's actually quiet without that moron...'' He stopped as the guild's entrance was flung open, revealing Natsu and Happy. ''...clearly I spoke too soon.''

Minutes later, the earth began to shake, confusing them. As everyone tried to understand what was going on, they heard a voice through the loud speakers around town calling for caution as the 'Gildarts Shift' was underway.

''Oh, now it makes sense...'' Levy trailed off.

''That means...'' Happy started.

''...Gildarts is back!'' Natsu cheered along with many others.

Hope seemed curious ''Isn't that...?''

''Gildarts is our strongest member.'' Erza walked over. ''He...tends to get carried away at times so the town prepared a special measure whenever he arrives.''

''But...to go that far...?'' Hope blinked. ''Is he as scary as Gray said?''

''Oh, far from it.'' She assured. ''He's powerful yes but he's rather friendly. It's just that he uses Crash Magic-it's a rather destructive ability. So he can cause quite a lot of damage if he isn't careful.''

Endymion was just as bewildered as his best friend by this news. He could see the Gildarts Shift in action even now...just how bad was the situation for the people to have to go this far?

'I'm beginning to see what Gray meant now...' He paused when some of those nearby looked in Hope's direction. '...ah, you heard that?'

Levy did recall him mentioning communicating with telepathy before but this was a first ''Yeah, you can use that special telepathy easily now?''

'Yes, it's something I'm adjusting to.'

They were distracted when a man with slicked back hair wearing a big dark cloak arrived. He grinned when an excited Natsu ran over ''Well, look who it is! Been a while, eh?''

''Yeah! That being said...'' The boy's fist ignited and he lunged. ''...come on, let's fight!''

''Is he for real?!'' Elfman cried.

Gildarts swiftly grabbed Natsu's arm and slammed him to the ground. Happy gave a long suffering sigh ''Every time...''

The new arrival chuckled ''As spirited as ever.''

''That's one way of putting it.'' Macao snorted as Makarov arrived on the scene.

''Good to see you back, Gildarts.''

''Heh, nice to be back, Master.'' The man took a moment to look around, his eyes pausing on Hope. ''Oh, looks like we've got a new face there.''

''Hope is our guild's guest, we've met a few months ago.'' Makarov informed.

''And we're all friends with him now!'' Happy chimed in.

''Oh, yeah?'' Gildarts smiled. ''Well, it's good to meet you, kiddo! Always nice to meet a friend.''

Hope began to smile as he returned the greeting. It seemed he really was kind.

Pretty soon, many were gathered around Gildarts as he happily regaled them about his travels. If one took a closer look, they might have noticed Cana staring wistfully at the scene...

''So the famous White Paladin is actually Natsu's old friend? How about that...'' Gildarts grinned at the boys. ''...I like the stories I heard about you but what you chose to do is impressive. It says a lot about your character.''

''Ah, well...thanks...'' Hope's face grew warm when some of the others agreed. ''...it's hardly any different from what you do, Gildarts-san.'' After all, he knew well about the man's tendency to step in where help was needed.

''Maybe but my point still stands. You oughta be proud of yourself, you've got every reason to be.''

''Right? We've been telling him that too.'' That being said, Lisanna liked that Hope remained modest about his achievements.

''So how was that quest? You took one of those super tough S-class ones again, right?'' Natsu wanted to know.

''Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm just lucky but it only took a few months to finish things up there.'' Gildarts admitted. The request had stated that the job would take at least a year but those who knew him expected nothing less.

''That's amazing...wait, but what kind of job actually needs that much time?'' Hope tilted his head.

''Well, actually...''

Makarov arched an eye when he found Gildarts outside his office, seeming pensive. Knowing the man had been coming to make his report ''Something wrong?''

The Crash mage started, apparently having not noticed him there. ''Ah, sorry-I was just thinking...Master, how much do you know about Hope?''

''Hm? Well, we've come to learn things about him over time. While I can see he's hiding something, I think he's a good child.''

''Oh, I'm definitely not arguing there.'' Gildarts believed that too. The boy was genuinely very kind and friendly, albeit somewhat reserved. He could easily understand how he get along with the others so well. ''It's just...I was talking to him a few minutes ago and...''

They had been talking about magic as Hope told him about Endymion. Then the boy noted that some of Gildarts' abilities where similar to what he himself could do with Memoria magic.

''Well, I guess they are alike, yeah...'' Gildarts nodded, knowing that Memoria magic could be very destructive if the user wanted it. ''...by the way, anyone ever tell you that your restoring spells are crazy good, kiddo? Best I've seen from any templar so far.''

''Really?'' Hope hadn't expected that. Now that the boy thought about it, it might explain why some of the older Fairy Tail members like Macao and Bisca's surprise when he first revealed them. There was no denying that he found the restoring spells useful but he hadn't noticed anything special about them...

''Now back to our talk-Crash magic isn't nearly as restrained though-you'd be surprised. There's a reason I do try to keep my power under control...even if it doesn't seem that way.'' He added sheepishly. There was a damn good reason the Gildarts Shift was still in effect after all.

''It sounds really dangerous when you say it like that.''

''True but doesn't that apply to all magic, in a way?'' Gildarts leaned back. ''So I was wondering about something Natsu told me-it seems like you're getting along with the others pretty well. A bunch of them seem pretty sure that you'd do great as a Fairy Tail mage. Also, you said you liked it here but you still turned their invites down. Why's that?''

''T-that's...'' Hope averted his gaze. ''...I don't think I should...I-I just don't know. Everyone's been so kind but I...it's not worth-I'm more trouble than I'm worth.''

Makarov frowned in concern ''He said that?''

''Yeah, he wouldn't explain a thing-he just said he had to leave. But that look on his face...'' It spoke of great sadness and even fear.

The former seemed to know what he had in mind ''...Yes, I think that child has been through terrible pain. It's not that he wouldn't want to be with us-he's too scared...'' He remembered Hope's sentiments on how that mercenary group hunted him and that it could happen again. ''...and I think people have given him more than enough reason to be.''

Looking back on the conversation days later gave Gildarts an idea. He had heard about Hope's missing memories. The Crash mage happened to know something that could help with that.

However, he didn't get a chance to make his suggestion for Magnolia was attacked by a dark wizard who had supposedly been reformed after imprisonment. No one in Fairy Tail had bought it but the council had apparently been convinced. As the day proved, he had clearly been succesful in puling the wool over their eyes.

The dark wizard had unleashed a number of vicious beasts to begin his assault and Fairy Tail went on to stop them. Gildarts was left to take him down while the others defeated his minions and ensured the citizens' safety.

It had been a short battle, Gildarts was easily able to decimate the man's attacks with his own magic. The dark mage was strong but it was nothing he couldn't handle. The Crash mage had just begun checking up on his guildmates when he spotted a myriad of beams that swifly changed into shining swords that took out three monsters at once. The source was Hope, who wasted no time in checking up on the trapped citizens nearby-who seemed to be unharmed.

Everything seemed okay when they found Laxus quickly defeating more monsters with a deluge of lightning bolts. The people nearby were instantly relieved and they began praising Laxus, stating that it was expected of Makarov's grandson and how it was without a doubt, thanks to the man's teachings that Laxus became so strong.

Gildarts was mostly relieved that the situation seemed to be under control, missing Laxus' increasingly dark expression as the praise continued. That was when something happened that threw both of them for a loop.

''...Why do you keep doing that?'' Eyes traveled to Hope ''You all keep saying that it was all just thanks to Master Makarov but what about Laxus-san? He's the one who defeated those monsters. It's true that Master Makarov is powerful but that couldn't make up for Laxus-san becoming this strong. You're practically dismissing him as if all he's done is meaningless. That's not fair at all.''

Gildarts' eyes widened a little, he had heard this sort of talk so he hadn't thought much of it but...when the boy put it like that...

Laxus could barely believe his ears. For years, no matter how hard he worked, all he would hear from people was them attributing to being Makarov's grandson. Not one of them had ever considered that while Makarov had taught him about magic, he had worked to get this far. It was really grating at every last one of his nerves. But...no one had ever spoken up for him like now...

Endymion was similarly surprised. He hadn't missed Laxus' clear shock at these words. Everything about the blond's demeanor told him that this had been a long standing issue as it had clearly been going on for sometime now.

Gildarts made a mental note to talk to the blond later. When he thought about it, Hope had a point. Laxus may have began changing for the worst but he didn't doubt that this was part of the reason why...surely he didn't deserve to be treated as if he was inconsequential like that.

Thankfully, the crowd seemed to understand that too as they began to apologize to the stunned blond before leaving him be.

Hope was about to go see how his friends were holding up when Laxus approached him ''Why'd you do that?...You didn't have to...''

''I wanted to.'' The reply was as simple as it was quick. ''Going by what I heard at the guild, this has been going on for some time. I just didn't think it was right to do nothing-all I said was the truth anyway. You do deserve the credit for saving them back there.''

''Even when I've been nothing but a jackass to you from day one?'' They weren't even close to friends after all-he really couldn't see any reason for the boy to interfere.

''Well, we hardly know each other.'' Hope pointed out. ''But I've met a lot of great people in Fairy Tail and...seeing them and Master Makarov, I don't think you're a bad person. Maybe just kind of cold but...I don't really know you enough to decide that so I didn't want to judge. Besides-let's just say I've seen worse...much worse than you.''

He didn't say anymore but Laxus had a feeling that these words held more significance than most knew. He found himself rather confused by this boy once again. Still, Laxus couldn't deny that his words brought him a sense of relief he hadn't felt in a long time.

''...You're one strange kid.'' He cracked a smirk at last. ''But thanks...you know, I think you might actually fit in at Fairy Tail.''

Hope almost smiled at the thought, wondering if it could be true...

A while after things settled down and they headed to Fairy Tail's HQ, which was when Gildarts brought up his idea.

''A spell that helps with memories?'' Lisanna verbalized their curiosity.

''Yeah, an old friend of mine likes practicing with magic and coming up with new ideas. He says he recently worked out this handy new spell to help with lost memories.'' Gildarts explained. ''I was wondering if it could help with Hope's situation.''

''I'd say it's worth a shot...'' Makarov hummed thoughtfully, looking at the boy in question. ''...what do you think?''

Hope wasn't sure how something like that would work but it may be worth a try. There was no denying that he would like some answers to his lost past. ''Yeah...I'll try it.''

Little did they realize how it would all go wrong...

Everything seemed to be going well at first. Gildarts, Makarov, Natsu, Lisanna, Mira and Laxus waited as Gildarts' friend set everything up in Makarov's office. He drew a complex magic seal and set up a few devices before beginning.

But as the spell went off, something happened. The devices flickered for a few moments and Hope cried out, feeling a sharp pain erupt in his skull. Before anyone could react, a couple of the devices fell back and Hope blacked out.

''What just happened?!'' Natsu demanded. But Gildarts seemed just as puzzled, this was the first time such a thing ever happened. His friend had made sure to set everything up just like he said he would. ''Gramps, is he okay?''

''...Yeah...'' Makarov settled Hope on his couch. ''...I think it was just quite a...''

''...Gramps...'' He turned to Laxus, the blond in clear shock as he held one of the lacrima. ''...you might want to see this.''

It would seem that the spell had actually worked. The lacrima was slowly projecting some images, capturing something from the target's mind to begin the process.

But...what they found left them floored.

The images were a little erratic and fragmented but they could see a city in ruins. Destruction, flames and even dead bodies were easy to see as far as the eye went. It took Makarov a moment to recognize it as Crocus. There were a few images of a battle, a castle being bombarded...then, there were images of a grisly, prison like area. A number of people, battered and worn, could be seen here and here. Among them was Hope, who was suddenly taken to a table nearby where some people surrounded him.

Their actions seemed a bit odd at first but then they realized that the people were experimenting on the boy, leaving the watchers sickened. And they just went on, regardless of how much he suffered-their terrible work continued, on him and the others.

The images seemed to fast forward, showing a few blurred places before returning back to the city. They could vaguely see a towering powerful being with red scales which Natsu confirmed as Igneel. The images went a little faster again before they showed him in a middle of a confrontation with some people. Their angry expressions and Hope's frightened one made them think that this woudn't end well.

And they were right-while they couldn't her what the people were saying, their expressions said volumes. The next thing they knew, the people were getting whatever sort of weapon ready and a few were even throwing stones at Hope before they tried to attack. A golden flash of light suddenly filled the screen and the images came to a stop.

Silence reigned as everyone tried to take this in. Given what they heard from Natsu, this likely happened after Igneel took Hope back to his old home. But...

''...What the hell was that?'' Mira breathed after a moment. Her sister looked like she wanted to cry, shaken to the core by those sights.

''E-Endymion?'' Lisanna managed. ''What...what happened? What does all this mean?''

'...Hope told you all before, he started traveling because he had no choice. He had nowhere to go.' Anger colored his tone. 'You know we wound up like this thanks to the monsters of that dark guild. They may have been defeated but the cost was too high. Many died even in the initial attack, Hope lost his best friends. Those utter fools back there...they just took their anger and suffering out on Hope, all for things he couldn't control. He was among the very few survivors of that attack. He just wanted to see his guardians...to make sure they were all right. But...everyone deemed him a monster, it's as if they held him responsible for everything. No matter what he said, it just made no difference. It's like they just condemned him for surviving where others hadn't. They said something about how his birth family should've just killed him instead of abandoning him to do everyone a favor and...a number of other terrible things you're better off not knowing. I had to take him away or else they would've killed him.'

''That's...that's just...'' The girl couldn't find words to describe how horrified she felt at these revelations.

''You've gotta be kidding me!'' Gildarts snarled, crushing the lacrima in his fury. ''He was just as much a victim as any of them-how dare they even...where the hell do they get off?!''

Initially just as furious, Natsu's own anger turned cold as he found himself thinking back. Hope had always been so sad when they met-so tired...he'd hardly even tried to find out why at the time...he had just deemed the boy a cry-baby, when he was likely reeling from these losses-from all that horrid dark guild did to him. Igneel had advised him to be patient but he hardly even listened. It was only thanks to time and Hope's kindness that they came to be friends.

But looking at this now...he had never felt like a bigger idiot in his life.

Laxus and Mira stared at the ruined lacrima with similar feelings of disgust. Neither of them could say they were actually friends with Hope but they immediately agreed that this was cruelty on a grand scale. Laxus really understood what the boy meant about worse people before...small wonder his attitude didn't really faze him. Even he would clearly say it, the situation was nothing but sickening. While this was leaving him more curious about the boy, one thing was clear. Hope didn't deserve this.

Makarov was livid. He hadn't missed the implication that Endymion might be part of the cause...even with that mercenary group hunting him down. The man knew Hope had been through a lot but something like this...he had never imagined it could be so bad. This was so messed up-how could they inflict such suffering on an innocent child? To say such cruel things and treat him like this...couldn't they see that they were hardly better than than the dark guild they hated?

''Why those deluded fools...'' He ground out. It was a wonder Hope turned out to be as kind as he was now...look at all what he was dealt with.

Regardless, this discovery cemented his choice-he would find a way to help the boy. There had to be something they could do to ensure he would heal.

Hope awoke a while later, only to be confused when he found himself in Fairy Tail's infirmary. He found some answers when Endymion brought him up to speed. He hardly even heard the phoenix explain how they suspected that his memories were too damaged for the spell to work. The boy was growing increasingly unnerved. What would they say now? What would they think of him?

'I don't think you need to worry about that.' His best friend and self-appointed guardian assured. If anything, he found their reactions rather satisfying. 'They were upset-furious on your behalf, actually...'

The phoenix trailed off as the infirmary door open and the group who had been in the office walked in. Natsu perked up ''You're up-that's great...''

The boy faltered, leaving them confused but then he suddenly bowed ''Sorry!'' He surprised Hope further by apologizing for their earlier interactions. He had been kind of a jerk but he hardly understood a thing and now that he knew...

''...It's okay.'' Hope never held that against him-especially not after they met up again. ''You didn't know...it would've helped if I...I could just say it back then...''

''But it wasn't your fault-that stuff...it's just hard to talk about, yeah?'' Natsu countered, after all he sometimes had trouble thinking back about Igneel due to his disappearance. ''It's not like you know...we wouldn't...ah, this doesn't really change much...''

''...I think what Natsu's badly trying to say is that we won't think any less of you for this.'' Lisanna smiled a bit when the boy offered a grateful look. ''If anything, it's the exact opposite.''

''Absolutely.'' Makarov knew that he wasn't the only one who felt his respect for the boy grow after these revelations. ''Just look at far how you've come-Endymion even told us that you're the reason he could see some light and life in his new situation. All you've done is nothing short of incredible.''

Hope couldn't even describe the effect these words had on him. He had never thought he'd find such acceptance after hearing his situation, especially given that they knew people had tried to kill him in the past and may be likely to try again. But they never cared and even wished for him and Endymion to join their family...

''...Why do you do it?'' Mira spoke up, startling him. She just couldn't make sense of it. ''After all the crap they put you through...how do you not hate them? How could even...care enough...try enough to become the person you are today? Didn't you hate them? Weren't you angry? After what those sick bastards from the guild...and the people betrayed you?''

''Mira-nee...'' Lisanna knew why Hope's story hit far too close to home for her sister.

''...Did I ever say I wasn't?'' This had been something he had decided a long time ago. ''Some of those days are still a blur but...I remember most of the feelings. It was definitely the lowest point of my life. I almost gave up more than once. I still remember how terrible I felt...how it felt like they crushed my heart. I thought they should know better...they should know me better. I spent over a year around them and I made a bunch of friends but...that didn't mean much in the end. Of course it made me angry and thinking of it hurts to this day. I've never gone back to that city over the years and I don't think I can. The idea still scares me...I don't want to see them again.''

Mira could understand the sentiment, thinking of their old hometown made her feel the same in many ways. ''Then?''

''I got tired of it.'' Hope began. ''Tired of being angry, it's just...what's the point? They made their feelings on everything perfectly. It...I didn't matter to them. It's true that I have yet to move on from those days but...at the same time, I realized something-why should I cling to those feelings if they weren't doing me any good? So I've decided to try...somehow, someway, I found that I had to keep going. Endymion told me something back then...Anger is an acid that does more to the vessel it's contained in than anything it's poured on. Well, I felt it was really true. It wasn't doing me any favors-so over time, I tried to let go. I'm not fully there yet but...After I went out there and saw more of the world, I knew I wasn't the only one who'd suffered-far from it. But still, I met a lot of good people...Before I even knew it, I just didn't want to turn away from something I knew was wrong. That's all. It makes me happy to know that I made a difference, that I could help out just like I was helped in the past. I'm just trying to keep the good things I've seen and experienced in mind instead of simply the bad. It might seem strange to you but that's how I feel.''

The Fairy Tail members eyed the boy with new respect. He'd freely admitted how bad off he had really been. Anyone would be angry and hurt after all he'd been through but he truly tried to make the best of his experiences. This was especially poignant after Endymion's story earlier.

Hope had been the entire reason he turned out the way he was now. He had been angry and bitter after the experiment but it was thanks to Hope that he was the way he was today. The boy had simply chosen to befriend him, nothing more, nothing less. It meant far more than the phoenix could ever say. It was the main reason Endymion had given him this name for the boy was the hope he needed in those dark times and look where that led to now.

Hope clearly didn't think much of it but the fact that he turned out this way...even if he was still hurting and trying to make his way...that he made the choices he had was nothing short of remarkable.

Unexpected as his response, Mira appreciated the honesty. She had gotten back on her feet thanks to Lisanna and Elfman before they arrived at the guild. In a similar vein, Hope had clearly struggled with the worst feelings over the years but look at him now. Her lips twitched, respect clear in her tone ''...You really are something else.''

''Damn straight...'' Gildarts ruffled the boy's hair. ''...I said it before and I'll say it again, you have every reason to be proud of yourself, kiddo. You were wrong about one thing though-you're definitely not more trouble than you were worth. None of us would ever think that.''

''Definitely not!'' Lisanna stated.

''Hell, screw the people who made you think that way.'' Laxus added.

''Totally! You're way better off without them-they don't deserve you!'' Natsu knew for a fact that Igneel would've loved to tear the bastards a new hole after what they did to him.

Makarov could understand why the boy felt apprehensive. He had lost his family at such a young age. Then look what happened when it looked like he had a new family and home just a short while. Small wonder he believed he wouldn't belong anywhere...how could he when he hardly even knew how that felt? It was no surprise he could trust few with the truth when the people he should've been able to rely on the most turned on him.

''You know, we might have gotten to know you because you were Natsu's old friend but whose to say it couldn't have happened differently?'' He started. ''In case you were wondering, that wasn't why we invited you to join us. It was because we felt you could really belong with us. What matters in Fairy Tail isn't someone's magic, it's their hearts, their compassion and ability to love...and I know you've got all those in spades. Why, look at how well you fit in as it were. It doesn't need to be said but all of us in Fairy Tail are a family. It's sad that you've forgotten what that's like but we can show you-a true family would look out for and help each other. Both of you. No matter what you choose, if anyone wants to hurt you again, we'll be there to help. We won't have you deal with everything all alone again.''

Hope stared at them in barely concealed wonder. Endymion was right, they really defied expectations. After all this time...

He really did feel like he could stay with them. In fact, he'd come to look forward to their visits to Magnolia over time, he would look forward to seeing Fairy Tail. He'd just been afraid...that it was wishful thinking...that he would lose anyone who became dear to him again...but here they all were-making it clear that they would be there for him no matter what. Could he really...had he possibly found somewhere he could call home...and a family...after so long?

'I think you know the answer, Hope.' Endymion's tone was gentle. This had been coming over a while now even if they hadn't seen it.

Hope silently agreed, feeling that he was ready to make his choice now. ''Thank you, I...this means so much. I...know what I want to do now.''

The following day...

Happy let out a cheer after Makarov placed the stamp on Hope's hand, revealing the silvery blue mark of their guild. Hope smiled as some of his friends welcome them aboard. The offer to join them was touching but he hadn't felt ready at the time.

Now...he knew, even a part of him was scared-he could take a chance. Fairy Tail could really be their new home.

Well, let's stop here.

What do you think? I wanted to show more of Hope and Endymion's interactions with everyone to lead up to the point where they'd join Fairy tail. Hope did like being with them a lot, he was just afraid that he'd bring them trouble. Especially after those people tried to kill him-the fact that he still doesn't know the full story there makes that worse. It was coming all along. They just have a lot of reason to be cautious given past experiences but they really did like the friends they came to make so the more they knew, the more the choice became easier.

About Laxus...I thought I'd try taking a somewhat different spin with him here. He's still kind of a jerk like in canon but he's not nearly that bad off yet. I always wondered what it'd be like if someone spoke up early on and made it clear that they he shouldn't just be seen him as Makarov's grandson. I like to think it could've really made a difference. He's going to become eventually nicer but now he has a soft spot for Hope, who's really going to help him and Makarov in the next chapter. I've got a few surprises planne for the next one. Gotta admit, I just can't shake the feeling that if anyone could relate to Hope's situation in Fairy Tail, it'd be Mira.

Well, ah, that's all I had to say but if anything seems unclear or if you have a question, feel free to ask. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it, till next time!
